China Set To Establish Electric Vehicle Factories In Nigeria

7

By Martha Agas

The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has revealed that plans are underway to establish electric vehicle factories and other manufacturing ventures in Nigeria.

Dunhai disclosed this to the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr Dele Alake at a recent bilateral meeting.

This is contained in a statement  by Alake’s Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori,  on Sunday in Abuja.

Tomori said the ambassador stressed the need for greater collaboration between China and Nigeria to unlock the potential of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector by establishing electric vehicle factories.

According to him, the ambassador expressed support for Nigeria’s local value-addition policy, pointing out that one of President Xi Jinping’s key priorities is hinged on promoting Africa’s industrialisation.

Dunhai stated that the leaders of Nigeria and China agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership aimed at creating new opportunities for cooperation.

He recalled that President Bola Tinubu and  Jinping, recently held high-level talks during Tinubu’s state visit to China in pursuit of that goal.

Tomori quoted him saying “Chinese companies were already deeply involved in Nigeria’s mining sector, from exploration to processing.

“We aim to deepen this collaboration, especially in line with President Tinubu’s eight priority areas, notably economic diversification through solid minerals,” the ambassador stated.

In response to concerns raised by the solid minerals minister, over the actions of a few operators tarnishing China’s image, the ambassador stated that the embassy and  Chinese government had consistently advocated compliance with regulations.

He said that Chinese companies operating in Nigeria had been admonished by their government to abide by the country’s rules and regulations.

He added that the companies were also urged to implement the required Corporate Social Responsibility  initiatives and adhere to environmental and safety standards.

According to Tomori, the ambassador stressed that Chinese authorities have zero tolerance for illegal mining, and are ready to partner with the Nigerian government to bring suspected culprits to justice.

On his part, Alake stated that Nigeria has a large market and the potential to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels through electric vehicle production.

He acknowledged the long-standing relations between Nigeria and China, stating that most Chinese firms operated within legal and regulatory frameworks.

He, however, expressed concerns over the actions of a few operators, stating that legal actions were being taken to address such situations.

“We have taken action against illegal operators, including some Chinese nationals. While isolated, such incidents undermine the good work of many compliant Chinese firms.

” We need your cooperation in ensuring that such culprits are brought to justice.”

The minister reiterated that Nigeria is open to business to serious investors, stating that investments in the nation’s mining industry remained focused on local value addition.

“We now prioritise local processing to drive Nigeria’s development. For instance, with the abundance of lithium, we want to see local manufacturing of electric vehicles and batteries,” he said.

JAMB, Oloyede & Integrity Question – By Shuaibu Gimi

Another big proof of integrity in Professor Ishaq Olanrewaju Oloyede’s personality and conduct in public office has manifested, making a lot more Nigerians to believe that a better future for the country is, after all, achievable. As the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the swiftness of his response to the  current controversy over the results of this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Board recently has indicated a resolve to serve Nigeria with absolute integrity.

JAMB is an examination body that is in the minds of most Nigerians because the kind of examinations it conducts are the bridge that links the lower level of education to the higher and therefore the one that is most critical to the future of the youths and development of the country. By showing more than adequate remorse for the failure of more than 75 percent of the candidates to get fifty percent of the total score which is 400, he has demonstrated a kind of courage that is rare among public officers, but which is required to put the systems back to proper shape.

He was widely reported to have said, at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday 14th May 2025, that the unfortunate incident happened because the “service provider did not properly apply the patch to some centre servers in these centres” which, according to him, caused disruption in the timely upload of the performances of  the candidates, particularly those in Lagos and Owerri zones. He convincingly ruled out sabotage and identified technical glitches over which JAMB had no control as the cause of the problem.

Naturally, Professor Oloyede had hoped that this year’s UTME would be an improved version of the previous ones, especially on the basis of the fact that, as he stated, “we upgraded our system from form-based to the single item-based, the latter of which is the international. standard now.” It must have been his sensitivity to the feelings of the candidates and their parents over this unforeseen disappointment that made him to weep while addressing journalists on the matter.

But Nigerians have already understood the constraint faced by JAMB and are therefore adequately sympathetic to the Registrar whose apology has been fully accepted. The concern humbly expressed by Professor Oloyede has made several stakeholders in the education sector to show tremendous understanding to JAMB over the UTME issue.

Professor Peter Okebukola who is the former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission and now Chairman of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board Equal Opportunity Group–a non-governmental body that monitors examinations conducted by JAMB–said the “candour, courage and transparency” of the Registrar are examplary. He expressed the group’s total solidarity for Oloyede at this critical moment of JAMB’s existence as an examination body.

The decision to reschedule the examination for the affected candidates is another demonstration of responsiveness by the Oloyede-led Management of JAMB that has also been highly appreciated by Nigerians. All those candidates must have now been hopeful that their ambition to move higher in the pursuit of education will eventually be achieved, which means that public confidence in the examination body is still intact.accepted.The concern humbly expressed by Professor Oloyede has made several stakeholders in the education sector to show tremendous understanding to JAMB over the UTME issue.

ECOWAS Synergy Will Boost Mining Investment In Region – DG MCO

0

By Nana Musa

The Nigerian Mining Cadastre Office (MCO) says  synergy within the ECOWAS region on mining will boost investment opportunities in the sector.

The Director-General of MCO, Mr Obadiah Nkom said this when a high level ECOWAS delegation visited the organisation on Friday in Abuja.

The ECOWAS delegation was led by Mr William Baidoe-Ansah, the Director, of the organisation’s Directorate of Mining and Geo-extractives Development

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the delegation, comprising technical experts and national representatives, was in Abuja to finalise frameworks for a regional Geo-Extractive Observatory and Mining Cadastral System.

Nkom expressed confidence that the synergy would ensure access to harmonised and verifiable data using Geographic Information System (GIS) platforms.

“The essence of the member states coming together is to ensure that they have a platform that will be easier for investors coming to ECOWAS to be able to invest,”he said.

He described the visit as a positive development, noting its importance in fostering regional growth and development.

He said that it would also facilitate easier access for investors to operate within the region.

According to him, the reforms in Nigeria’s mining sector, particularly its transition to the Electronic Mining Cadastre Plus (EMC+) system in 2022, reflects its drive to reposition the sector and boost investor’s confidence.

Nkom said that the drive to sanitise the mining sector as championed by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, has led to significant result in the industry.

The head of the ECOWAS delegation, William Baidoe-Ansah, said that its mission was to assess Nigeria’s progress as a benchmark for the proposed regional system aimed at harmonising its mining cadastral system.

Badieo-Ansah said that the initial feasibility report confirmed the viability of a regional geo-extractive observatory.

According to him, the current visit, constituting the second phase, is to ensure that each member state complies with the baseline operational standards required for full integration.

“We have moved beyond theory, the first feasibility report confirmed the possibility of a regional geo-extractive observatory.

“This second phase is about ensuring that each member state meets the baseline operational standards before full integration,” he said.

He said that Nigeria’s EMC+ system had positioned the country advantageously by providing a fully functional, transparent and accessible operational system that serves as a model.

Also speaking, a delegate, Mr Madu Fika, Chief Geologist at Nigeria’s Ministry of Petroleum, described Nigeria’s EMC+ system as a model of digital excellence and transparency in the extractive sector in West Africa.

Fika said that the proposed regional geo-extractive observatory and cadastral system was aimed at providing a one-stop shop for the entire region’s cadastral system.

Other delegates also emphasised the significance of the visit in harmonising operational standards across all member states, amplifying collective achievements, and fostering investor confidence throughout the region.

They also commended Nigeria’s advancements  in digitising  its operational  system.

NGO Seeks End To Stereotypes Stalling Boy Child Health, Wellbeing

By Justina Auta

An NGO, Restore Hope for the Boy Child Initiative (RHBCI), says the rigid and often unrealistic expectations from male children can lead to emotional, mental, and physical harm.

Dr Babatunde Kayode, the Executive Director of the organisation, said this at a news conference to mark the 2025 International Day of the Boy Child, on Friday, in Abuja.

Awareness Walk/Rally marking the Day

Kayode said that it could also ultimately affect boys’ ability to thrive and reach their full potential.

According to him, societal expectations and stereotypes are having a profound negative impact on the well-being and development of the boy child.

“Boys globally encounter various obstacles, including struggle with societal expectations, leading to mental health concerns.

“They also face harmful stereotypes, which can negatively impact on their well-being and development.

“They are also vulnerable to violence, exploitation, and abuse, and most times, have limited access to quality education,” he said.

He said that the challenges affecting the boy child is often neglected by the family, society and the government, hence the increasing cases of juvenile delinquency, crime, low self-esteem, aggression and other societal ills.

He emphasised the need to also prioritise their issues, implement policies that will promote boys’ education, health and well-being.

Kayode said that the NGO was championing the importance of positive role models and mentors in shaping the lives of boys.

He said that it was part of its efforts to support the well-being and development of the boy child.

He said that by providing boys with inspiring and supportive figures, they can be empowered to grow into confident, compassionate, and responsible individuals.

“There is a need for us to raise awareness on boys’ well-being and challenges.

“We should also promote positive role models that will encourage them and support their development, as well as create a positive environment for them to thrive,” he said.

John Samuel, a junior secondary school student, urged stakeholders to educate the public, especially on the negative effects of pressure or societal expectations on the male child.

“Most times, at a young age, family members put so much pressure on the need for the male child to be successful, irrespective of the person’s intellectual ability.

“This has forced a lot of young people to go into fraudulent means like scam, robbery and others just to have money,” he said.

Favour Emmanuel, another student stressed the need for the society, especially family members, to encourage the boy child to exhibit emotions.

“Most times, even when one is hurt and you cry, people around you will laugh and mock you rather than give listening ears to the reasons for the emotion,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the day is celebrated annually on May 16,

It is used to advocate for the well-being of male children, and the positive aspect they bring to the families and communities.

Other activities to mark the day include awareness Walk/Rally to promote support, distribution of fliers, and a lecture at Federal Government Boys College, Apo, on bullying, school-based violence, and their impact on boys’ health. (NAN)

… Says Average voter looking To SDP As Alternative Platform To Rescue Nigeria

A group under the auspices of Social Democratic Party, SDP Youth Vanguard, North Central Zone, has expressed confidence in the capacity of Prince Adewole Adebayo, saying that he remains the leader of the party.

Prince Adebayo

The group cautioned those it described as miscreants sponsored to spoil the name of the leader of the SDP,  Mr. Adewole  Adebayo to desist from such acts.

Addressing a press conference in Lafia, Nasarawa state on Wednesday, the Zonal Coordinator of the youth group,  Comrade
Yusuf Sani Umar explained that contrary to rumour making the round, the party remains united, and determined to take over power from the ruling APC in 2027.

Umar added that APC and the PDP have both disappointed Nigerians in the past and presently, just like Nigerians are going through economic hardship. ” APC is weak, and we will use it to campaign against it,” he emphasised.

The Zonal Coordinator was optimistic that the party will sweep the zone during the general elections.

“The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has undergone a significant transformation, evolving into a welcoming platform for Nigerians from all walks of life. Our doors are open to everyone who shares our vision for a better future, and we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every member can contribute to the party’s growth and success.

“This transformation is a testament to our commitment to progress and our determination to build a party that truly represents the interests of Nigerians. We appreciate the good leadership quality provided by the party from the states to the National level for their vision and dedication to the growth of the party.

“At this critical moment, unity among stakeholders is paramount. The average Nigerian voter is looking to the SDP as an alternative platform to rescue them from the failures of both the PDP and APC. We must present a united front to capitalise on this opportunity and demonstrate our commitment to providing a better future for Nigerians.

Unfortunately, some youths allegedly recently sponsored used our registered name to undermine the good work of one of the leaders of the party, Prince Adewole Adebayo. We call on them to refrain from that action in future, or we will report them to the relevant authorities for disciplinary action.

“The SDP Youth Vanguard is using this medium to apologise to Prince Adewole Adebayo on behalf of those youths who may be misled to carry out that unfortunate activity.”

HIV: Stakeholders Advocate Access To Care, PMTCT Services

0

By Justina Auta

Stakeholders have advocated improved access to healthcare and Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) services to reduce transmission, improve the health and well-being of individuals living with HIV.

They made the call on Thursday at a one-day research findings dissemination meeting on PMTCT and Early Infant Diagnosis (EID) of HIV organised by Association of Women Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (ASHWAN) in Abuja.

Mrs Esther Hindi, the National Coordinator of ASHWAN, said inadequate access to healthcare services, stigma and discrimination, among others, hinder progress in HIV response.

She, therefore, called for sensitisation, access to PMTCT services for hard-to-reach women, community-based interventions and peer support programmes, strengthening of healthcare services and implementation of anti-stigmatisation laws to support women living with the virus.

She said “we should create an environment for women living with HIV and pregnant women specifically to ensure they access healthcare services.

“We need to strengthen referral systems and make sure that we don’t miss out on women.

“Let us give priority to underserved communities, especially women and ensure they access services freely without stigma and discrimination.

“We also have policies and laws in place, but they have been silenced, so we need to implement and make them active, as not all states have passed the anti-stigma bill.

“There is also the need to create awareness on existing laws, implement them so that perpetrators and people that abuse their rights are brought to justice.”

She also stressed the need to retrain health workers to enable them to become conversant with HIV care and treatment and make them interact with people living with the virus without discrimination.

Hindi explained that through the Love Alliance project supported by Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+) in Delta, Oyo, Nasarawa and Kebbi states, ASHWAN tried to address the gaps in HIV prevention and treatment services for children and mothers.

She added that the project aimed to address the needs, increase the voices and visibility of underserved populations, as well as build their capacity to advocate for their rights and well-being.

Also, Usman Muhammad-Magiro, the Programme Manager, Kebbi State Agency for the Control of AIDS (KBSACA), called for stakeholders’ engagement, sensitisation at community levels and increase funding to eliminate PMTCT.

Ms Joy Adiele of Goshen Foundation assured that the research findings will be cascaded to people at the community level to ensure the elimination of PMTCT.

Also, Ayomide Joshua, Programme Officer, Lawyer’s Alert, reaffirmed commitment toward ensuring the rights of women, marginalised and vulnerable groups were upheld.

Meanwhile, Alhaji Ahmadu Bako, the Chief of Kuruduma community, One Man Village, Nasarawa State, commended ASHWAN for the support, adding that the community would continue to create awareness on HIV/AIDS prevention, transmission and care. (NAN)

NYCP Says Tinubu Delivers on Forest Guard Promise …Calls for Community-Led Implementation

0

The Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) has praised President Bola Tinubu for fulfilling one of his key campaign promises — the revitalization of the Forest Guard initiative as outlined on page 9 of his Renewed Hope manifesto (2022).
This critical move, it notes, marks a decisive step in addressing the security challenges posed by violent groups hiding in Nigeria’s forests.

A statement issued by the Chairman, Isaac Abrak said the Northern Christian Youth Professionals formally commended President Tinubu for not only remaining true to his word but also for demonstrating that he has listened to the consistent calls by the organization and other concerned Nigerians.

The revitalization of the Forest Guard, the statement emphasized, was the cornerstone of the organisation’s campaign across the Northern region.

“At several campaign engagements, we urged Nigerians, especially those from vulnerable communities, to support President Tinubu, assuring them that he would establish community-based security outfits and recruit local youth to protect their forests and communities. Today, we are grateful that this vision is being realized.

“This achievement vindicates our decision to campaign vigorously for President Tinubu. To God be the glory.

Call for Community-Based Implementation

“As this initiative moves to implementation, we call on the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Federal Ministry of Environment to ensure that recruitment into the Forest Guard is driven by community inclusion and integrity. We firmly reiterate our belief that individuals residing in and around the 1,129 forest areas across Nigeria should be prioritized for recruitment. Their familiarity with the terrain gives them a unique advantage in combating criminal elements and maintaining security within these forests.

“Moreover, the success of this initiative will depend heavily on a transparent and depoliticized recruitment process. We urge the Federal Government to avoid making the Forest Guard an avenue for political patronage or the recruitment of individuals with questionable backgrounds. Community leaders and security agencies such as the DSS must be consulted to vet candidates thoroughly. Only Nigerians with a genuine commitment to protecting their communities should be enlisted.

“Similarly we reiterate that at inception the Forest Gaurd can recruit and empoy a total of 185,000 youths taking 5000 from each state including the Federal Capital Territory-Abuja

A Vital Pillar in Nigeria’s Security Architecture

“The Forest Guard could represent the last viable line of defense in the effort to curb terrorism and banditry in both the North and South. Therefore, the integrity and effectiveness of this unit must not be compromised. We caution all stakeholders — including the President, the National Security Adviser, and relevant ministries — to shield this initiative from political interference.

“During training, recruits must be imbued with values of patriotism, discipline, citizenship, and the One Nigeria dream envisioned by our founding fathers. These values should guide their conduct and deepen their loyalty to the nation.

NCYP’s Continued Support
“The NCYP remains committed to supporting the government, particularly the Office of the National Security Adviser under Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and the Federal Ministry of Environment headed by Alhaji Balarebe Abbas Lawal, as they carry out this critical national assignment. We are ready to collaborate in community sensitization, monitoring, and providing local insights to ensure the success of this initiative.

“We believe that, with sincere implementation, the revitalized Forest Guard will become a cornerstone in securing Nigeria’s forests and protecting its citizens”, the statement concludes.

Visit To Benue: Middle Belt Forum Berates NSA, Says Visit Turns Into Controversial Development

0

No Blanket Amnesty For Terrorists,  Endorses State Police

The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) says it is deeply concerned by the comments made by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, during his recent condolence visit to Benue State Governor, Father Hyacinth Alia, following what it calls, the horrific attacks by armed men identified as Fulani herdsmen.

These attacks, it notes, have left scores dead, entire communities displaced, and thousands fleeing in desperation, joining the ranks of hundreds of thousands already living as internally displaced persons (IDPs) in their own homeland.
A statement issued by its National Spokesman, Luka Binniyat, argues that what should have been a solemn, compassionate visit turned into a controversial development.
According to the statement, while condemning the violence, the NSA downplayed the crisis by suggesting it was part of a global trend, citing examples like Sudan and Mauritania. “Even more disturbing, he denied any territorial control by armed groups in Nigeria, contradicting well-documented realities”, the statement emphasized.
In Benue State alone, where Ribadu made these claims, the statement notes, many communities remain under the occupation of armed Fulani militants who violently displaced the original inhabitants.
” Similar situations persist across parts of Southern Kaduna, Plateau, Niger, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, and Zamfara states. Even Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno has publicly admitted that Boko Haram has regained control of areas they were once expelled from.
“The MBF is therefore alarmed and puzzled by the NSA’s statements. Who is briefing him? On what basis is he dismissing credible reports of occupation and atrocities?
“His remarks are not only inaccurate, they are callous, especially when so many IDPs live in subhuman conditions—stripped of their dignity, homes, and livelihoods. To suggest no one occupies their lands is to deny them justice and hope of return to their homes and restitution paid in the future.
“Further raising concerns is the ongoing “North Central Workshop on Developing a National Framework on Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration” currently being organised in Makurdi under the NSA’s office. While such frameworks are vital, there is a glaring omission and the MBF has its position on it.
“Meanwhile, last year, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State granted amnesty to so-called “repentant” terrorists in Birnin Gwari. He said that it was an outcome of robust collaboration with the NSA’s office. He pledged to rehabilitate them, for dropping their arms. These are men who have committed mass killings, arson, and kidnappings.
Yet, not a word was said about their countless victims—families shattered, communities ruined, and lives reduced to misery.
“We suspect that the ongoing workshop may align with the Kaduna model, which had no consideration to the victims and has no space for justice.
“We must ask: will the proposed disarmament workshop also target communities who, in desperation, have armed themselves with rudimentary weapons to defend against terrorist onslaughts? Would this not contradict the February 2025 call by the Director General of the Department of State Services, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, urging communities to act as first responders in self-defense?

Our Position:

“No Blanket Amnesty for Terrorists: The government must not allow murderers and destroyers of communities to simply surrender weapons and walk away free. Justice must be served.
“Right to Self-Defense: Communities under siege should be supported—not disarmed. The government should help them legally procure light weapons, train youth volunteers, and place them under the supervision of vetted military or security personnel, serving or retired.

“State and Local Policing: The MBF reiterates its call for the establishment of State Police, as well as Local Government and Ward Police structures. Security must be localised to be effective.

“No Unilateral Forgiveness of Criminals: Amnesty and reintegration programs must follow legal processes and legislative backing. The Federal and State Governments must not unilaterally pardon terrorists without public accountability.

“The time has come for serious, responsible, and empathetic governance that truly reflects the pain and suffering of affected communities. The NSA must offer leadership that reassures victims not pamper terrorists.
“The Hundreds of thousands of “repentant” Boko Haram terrorists granted amnesty has not solved the insurgency in the North East”, the statement concludes.
