Nigeria Woos Investors To Take Advantage Of Railway Corridors In Abuja

0

By Peter Usman

Abuja (Nigeria) — Nigeria’s Minister for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Musa Bello, has urged investors to take advantage of the huge business opportunities that would be offered by completion of the FCT Light Rails Mass Transit System.

Bello said the entire rail transit corridor offers an array of business opportunities for restaurants, parking lots and shopping malls to mention but a few.

The Minister made the request while fielding questions from journalists in his office in Abuja.

According to him, the large swathe of space on the rail line corridors contains 12 stations, including the central metro station near the World Trade Centre in the Central Business District hoping  that the network would substantially increase economic activities in the FCT .

On why there has not been land allocation since he assumed office, the  minister  lamented the abuse of the land processes in the past, resulting in large incidences of land use mismatch.

He stated  that almost all the phases within the Federal Capital City have been allocated except for Phase 5.

“FCT Administration needs over N80billion to provide infrastructure in the already allocated districts. We are grappling with a situation where plots were allocated in a manner that outstripped the capacity of the Administration to provide infrastructure.

“Most beneficiaries commenced development under the pressure for accommodation and today we have houses built on spaces earmarked for roads, natural water ways, public utility lines and so on.” he  said.

Drawing analogy from other advanced cities of the world, the Minister stated that a time would  come when land finishes and therefore appealed to the inhabitants  to avoid the bubble of land activities and businesses which usually resulted in needless speculations and scam.

Bello stated that time has come for people to patronise secondary channels like mortgages and other similar sources.

He advised Nigerians to be patient with the Administration, saying development is a process and a not switch.

Abuja, he explained, is a consciously planned and executed city in tandem with a master-plan.

On street lighting, Bello explained that the FCT was contending with the spate of vandalisation of public utilities by criminals, stating that FCT has 300km of streetlights and given the rate of one pole per 10 meters distance, the Administration, has over 3000 poles.

He further revealed that the Administration achieved a milestone when it resolved the issue of flawed billing system which resulted in a very huge liability, adding that FCT Administration had paid off all confirmed bills it inherited ensuring that all power consumed by the Administration is metered to ensure appropriate billing.

The Minister also pointed to the challenge of rationing of power by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC} stressing that the Administration was making arrangements for off grid solution to the perennial challenge of street lighting in the FCT and consequently the Administration was looking the way of solar panels and generators as back-up for power during off-grid times.

He  expressed delight that some infrastructure projects would go off the budge line this year and next year as works on them have been completed or are about to.

His words, “Our next attention is to the satellite towns. Work is now going on the Dutse Alhaji – Kubwa road, Karu Township infrastructure – for which the National Executive Council has approved N2.6 Billion; as well as the Karshi – Apo roads among others.”

Niger are contesting a Fifa tournament for the first time

Niger reached the knock-out stage of the Under-17 World Cup in India on a day when Guinea crashed out of the competition.

Niger’s route to the Round of 16 marks history for a team making its debut in a Fifa competition in any age group.

Despite losing 2-0 to Brazil in their final Group D game, the Nigeriens progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

Guinea, meanwhile, were beaten 3-1 by Germany in Group C, in Kochi.

Three of Africa’s four teams at the finals are now through to the knock-out phase after Mali and Ghana both progressed on Thursday.

Niger 0-2 Brazil

Coach Tiemogo Soumaila’s side were undone by first-half goals from Lincoln and Brenner, which gave Brazil a platform they never gave up.

The South Americans finish top of the group with nine points while Spain, who beat North Korea 2-0 in Kochi, took second spot with six points.

The Junior Menas make it through to the Round of 16 courtesy of the three points gained in their opening 1-0 win against North Korea.

The North Koreans finish bottom of Group D.

Guinea 1-3 Germany

Guinea will count themselves unfortunate to be going home at the earliest stage after impressing against Germany, who finished second in Group C behind Iran, only to come away empty-handed.

In an open game, Germany led after eight minutes through Jann-Fiete Arp but Ibrahima Soumah levelled matters just before the half-hour mark with his second of the tournament.

Nicolas Kuehn gave the European side the lead once more after finishing off a counter-attack after 62 minutes and it was only in stoppage time that the Germans clinched victory with a penalty.

Guinea, who finished with just one point from Group C, will rue missing several presentable opportunities to equalise prior to Sahverdi Cetin’s crushing final blow.

Watford boss Silva warns Nigerian Success on conduct

Isaac Success has scored one goal in 19 Premier League games for Watford

Nigeria’s Isaac Success has been warned by Watford coach Marco Silva about his conduct at the Premier League side.

The 21-year-old striker, who is currently injured, was detained by police last month following an incident at a hotel in Hertfordshire.

“He needs to be careful – everyone needs to be careful – and know the right way,” said the Portuguese Silva.

“Everybody at the club knows the rules and their obligations as a professional.”

“What we are talking about is one situation in September,” added Silva, who refused to reveal whether Watford would discipline the forward.

Success joined the Hornets for a then club-record fee of £12.5m from Spanish club Granada in August 2016, signing a five-year contract.

He managed just one goal from 19 games last season, netting against Bournemouth over a year ago, and has yet to feature for Silva in the Premier League this season.

However, he now faces eight weeks out with injury following a knee injury sustained in training.

“We expect six to eight weeks,” said Silva. “It’s a knee injury, a problem he had in one session here.”

“It was a normal situation and looked nothing special at that moment but after examinations, the problem is bigger and now we need to wait for him.”

Success’ sole appearance for Watford this season came as a second-half substitute in their 3-2 defeat by Bristol City in the Carabao Cup in August.

YouTube lifts Swazi bare-breasted dancer restrictions

YouTube has lifted restrictions from videos showing Swaziland’s reed dance, which feature bare-breasted women.

A spokesperson for the video-sharing platform told the BBC that YouTube allows nudity when “culturally relevant or properly contextualised”.

Users who had uploaded reed dance videos were angered when it was classified as age-restricted content.

YouTube has denied accusations of racism, saying it was keen to be culturally sensitive.

The move was in response to a campaign led by Lazi Dlamini, the head of TV Yabantu, an online video production company, featuring Africa’s “finest culture… as seen, and recorded by the African people”.

Its YouTube channel – which launched in 2016 – had been adding up to 4,000 new subscribers every month until the platform started to flag its content as inappropriate, South Africa’s Mail and Guardian newspaper reports.

It also put a label on the channel advising advertisers that its content was “not suitable for most advertisers”.

According to Mr Dlamini, he had contacted YouTube’s parent company Google to say that he was simply reflecting the cultural values of his community, but the company said that the content violated the platform’s standards.

He then organised a series of protests, working with more than 200 cultural groupings from Swaziland, with the first one taking place on Saturday in Durban, a city in neighbouring South Africa, the Mail and Guardian says.

It included at least a dozen women who posed bare-breasted with placards that accused Google of racism.

One placard read: “My breasts are not inappropriate”, the Mail and Guardian said.

What is the reed dance?

Image copyright AFP
  • The reed dance, or Umhlanga, celebrates chastity and virginity
  • Every year about 40,000 girls and young women take part in the ceremony, during which King Mswati can chose a new wife
  • The eight-day event, which sees the women parade semi-naked in front of the royal residence, has been heavily criticised by rights groups who say it is outdated and sexist.

After the Mail and Guardian article was published, a spokesperson for YouTube told the BBC that reed dance videos were not against their policy, and that they were happy to rectify the error and apologise.

YouTube has been criticised for how it moderates content, and earlier this year pledged to do more to prevent the spread of terror-related material in particular.

More 400 hours of content is uploaded to YouTube per minute.

In most cases, YouTube relies on inappropriate content being flagged by users, which it then investigates.
