Heaven Won’t Fall If Fubara Impeached – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that nothing will happen if the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly moves to impeach the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Speaking at a media parley in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike asserted that heaven would not fall if Fubara is sacked over alleged impeachable offences.

According to the report by Channels Television on Wednesday, the former Rivers State governor emphasized that impeachment is a constitutional provision and should not be seen as an extraordinary event.

The former governor dismissed concerns about potential unrest, stating, “I have heard people say: ‘Oh, if they impeach him, there will be a breakdown of law and order’. Rubbish! Nothing will happen.”

He further criticized Fubara for allegedly withholding lawmakers’ salaries for months, suggesting that such actions justified their grievances.

Wike also dismissed a letter sent by Fubara to the Assembly, implying that the governor should have handled the situation more effectively.

This development follows the Supreme Court’s verdict on February 28, 2025, which delivered a series of rulings on the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State.

The five-man panel, led by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, unanimously dismissed Fubara’s cross-appeal challenging the legitimacy of the House of Assembly under Speaker Amaewhule.

The ruling mandated the Assembly to resume sitting immediately.

Additionally, the apex court barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other financial agencies from releasing funds to the Rivers State Government until it complies with court orders.

Furthermore, the court declared the local government elections held on October 5, 2024, invalid, prompting Fubara to pledge full compliance with the judgment.

It directed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to prepare for a fresh poll scheduled for August 9, 2025.
