The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) says it sealed 280 illegal drug premises in Zamfara state, Northwest of the country in its bid to ensure rational distribution and dispensing of medicines that are safe, effective and of good quality to the public.
Director, Inspection and Monitoring of PCN, Anthonia Aruya who led an enforcement delegation to Zamfara State, stated this on Friday in Gusau while addressing journalists on the week long activities of the council in the state.
She said the enforcement exercise in Zamfara was part of efforts by PCN to reverse this ugly trend and improve on the quality of pharmaceutical service delivery to the good people .
Aruya added that the sealing of the illegal premises was in compliance with the marching order given by the National Assembly to close down illegal medicine premises in the country and also the directive by the minister of health to ensure that all premises where medicines are stored or sold are registered with PCN.
She said some of these premises stored products in environments where the quality, safety and efficacy of pharmaceutical products cannot be guaranteed thus exposing the public to serious danger.
“At the end of the enforcement exercise, a total of 365 premises were visited out of which a total of 280 premises made up of four illegal pharmacies and 361 Patent Medicine stores were sealed for various offences some of which include operating without registration with PCN, failure to renew premises license, dispensing ethical products without the supervision of a pharmacist, poor sanitary conditions among others. One compliance directive was issued to a Pharmacy”, she said.
