Bauchi Announces Closure Of GDSS Rimin Zayem Following  Unlawful Principal’s Arrest

Following the arrest of the Principal of Government Day Secondary School Rimin Zayem, Toro LGA, by the District Police Officer of Toro for a disciplinary action taken by a teacher on a disobedient girl-child, the Ministry of Education hereby announces the indefinite closure of that school until the community and the police assure the Ministry that its teachers are safe to discharge of their duties.

The order of the closure was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Aliyu Tilde in Bauchi.

“The public in general must know that, under the doctrine of duty of care, teachers and parents are allowed by law to take disciplinary measures on their subjects. It is their duty of care to punish where necessary for the good upbringing of the child. What form that punishment takes depends on the society. In Nigeria we know that it includes spanking the child, among many others.

“The Ministry of Education thus supports the punishment of any student in forms practiced in this country and will walk every distance to defend its staff in the discharge of their duty. Education by definition is not about imparting knowledge only; it is equally about building good character in children and students alike. Any parent—no matter how powerful—who is not civilised enough to know this can keep his child at home or take him to where he will be rewarded with chocolates for misbehaviour!

“This is the second time such parents are threatening our teachers in the school. That a senior police officer will support them to the extent of arresting a principal, in spite of earlier intervention by the Ministry and the State Government, is not only shocking but also gives a wrong signal that such barbaric behaviour is tolerable. It puts the lives of our teachers at risk.

“GDSS Rimin Zayem will remain closed until further notice. No child will be readmitted into the school until his or her parent signs a form consenting that his ward can be reprimanded by teachers whenever desirable. This was the promise that the Ministry made to the elders of the community who came last Monday pleading against the possible closure.

” Statewide also, all parents in the State will be required to sign such an undertaking when schools reopen for the 2021/2022 session this October”, the statement concludes.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, has assured the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, of the readiness of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to rid Kaduna State and the Nation of banditry and all other forms of criminality. It will also work in synergy with sister Services and other security agencies.

He made this commitment when he paid a courtesy call on the Governor on Thursday, at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna.

Speaking during the visit, Air Marshal Amao informed the Governor of President Mohammadu Buhari’s marching order to the Service Chiefs to rid the entire Nation of all criminal elements, a task which, he said, the Services have sworn to execute expeditiously.

While thanking the Governor for his support to the NAF in Kaduna State, he commended  Governor El-Rufai for his monumental developmental strides as well as his zeal towards solving the security challenges in the State.

In his remarks, Governor El-Rufai thanked the CAS for the visit and singled out NAF personnel in Kaduna for their professionalism, dedication and particularly for their integrity in all dealings with the Kaduna State Government.

He went further to state that, for a long time, Nigerians have taken peace and security for granted until the current spate of insecurity afflicting the Nation. He called on all Nigerians to appreciate and support the efforts of the military as they continue to make efforts to keep the Nation safe. According to him, “the security situation could have been worse but for the  efforts of our Armed Forces”.

The Governor also stated that he, along with Governors of the North West Zone, had agreed to assist the military, particularly in efforts at employing scientific measures towards containing insecurity.

On the payment of ransom to kidnappers, the Governor reiterated the resolve of his Government not to pay any ransom to bandits and kidnappers, saying,  “we will not pay a penny to any bandit’.

He went further to state that despite the threats of kidnapping, schools would continue to remain open.

According to him, the decision to keep schools open was taken so as not to allow criminals to dictate the education of children in the State.

He also noted that the ability of the military to swiftly respond to kidnapping further gives the State the confidence to keep schools open.

Earlier on, the CAS had toured units in NAF Base Kaduna, where he was briefed on ongoing operations within Kaduna and the North West Zone.

The CAS also held an interactive session with officers, airmen and airwomen of the Air Training Command (ATC) and co-located units in Kaduna, where he reiterated the need for jointness and cooperation with sister Services and other security agencies.

According to him, “No real success can be achieved if we do not work together. We must also note that there are no individual trophies in the fight against insecurity”. Personnel were also reminded to remain disciplined in the discharge of their duties while also assuring them of adequate measures to take care of all their welfare needs.

Present during the visit to Sir Kashim Ibrahim House were the State Commissioner for Internal Security, Mr Sam Aruwan, other senior government officials as well as Branch Heads from NAF headquarters and some Air Officers Commanding.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Dr Naledi Pandor, has conveyed South Africa’s sympathies amid Yemen’s deepening humanitarian crisis, sparked by the ongoing conflict in that country.

The Minister relayed this message during a virtual meeting with Yemen’s Foreign Minister, Dr Ahmed bin Mubarak, on Tuesday.

According to the department, the meeting was a positive engagement that sought to advance bilateral relations between South Africa and Yemen.

The two Ministers engaged in frank discussions on the political situation in Yemen and ways in which South Africa may offer its support.

“The Minister offered South Africa’s support to the Yemeni government and proposed to share the country’s expertise in conflict resolution and negotiation. Such assistance could be made available or facilitated by government or non-governmental organisations in support of either the United Nations mediation efforts or the Yemeni government itself.

“Similarly, Minister Ahmed bin Mubarak briefed Minister Pandor on the developments in Yemen, and informed South Africa of the Yemeni government’s continued commitment to the peace process and the United Nations mediation efforts,” said the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

Mubarak thanked Pandor for offering a helping hand and committed to engage further on the matter with the UN.

He also recalled the assistance provided by South African experts during the National Dialogue Conference in Yemen in 2013.

“Both Ministers reiterated the perspective that the Yemeni conflict can only be resolved through a peaceful negotiation process that focuses on the well-being of Yemen and its people,” the department said.

Shifting to bilateral relations, both nations focused on the conclusion of the Partnership Dialogue Agreement.

“Both Ministers noted the agreement could be concluded during 2021 and expressed their joint commitment to ensure that this is achieved,” the department said.

The meeting ended with both Ministers expressing their mutual appreciation for the meeting and said they wished to meet in person when the opportunity presents itself.

According to the UN, Yemen is in the midst of a protracted political, humanitarian and developmental crisis.

“With 24.1 million people – 80% of the population – in need of humanitarian aid and protection, it is now the largest humanitarian crisis in the world,” the UN said.

According to the intergovernmental organisation, more than 14 million people are in acute need, while more than three million have been displaced from their homes since 2015. – SAnews.go

Exposed: How The Presidency Is Using Unethical Arm-Twisting Tactics On PDP Govs , “Join APC Or Else”

0

By 247ureports.com

The practice of democracy has gradually become an evasive commodity inside the federal republic of Nigeria particularly under the presidency of the former military dictator and current civilian commander of the armed forces, President Muhammadu Buhari – where the tenets governing the ethics of democracy has lost its footing.

Information available to 247ureports.com gathered from a consortium of knowledgeable sources in and around the presidency indicate the national ruling party, the All Progressive Congress [APC] has adopted borderline unethical arm twisting tactics against ranking members of the main opposition party in the country – the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] – with the primary aim of forcing a conversion from PDP to APC against the electioneering exercise of 2023.

President of Nigeria – Muhammadu Buhari

Prime targets for the forced conversion had been PDP State governors. But the national leadership of the ruling party, the APC working in tandem with the presidency had adopted a soft carrot on a stick approach to persuade selected PDP state governors into dumping the PDP for the APC. The governors of Enugu, Abia, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Zamfara, Anambra and two other PDP governed States were pencilled by the presidency. For the south east geopolitical states, Senator Ken Nnamani was dispatched to negotiate and/or convince the governors into abandoning their parties for the APC. Promises were made to the respective governors ranging from APC presidential ticket to ministerial positions. Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi took the bait and decamped. He was promised the number two position to deputize a presidential candidate.

Governor of Ebonyi State – Dave Umahi

The case of Bauchi State was peculiar – where the former federal capital territory minister, Senator Bala Mohammed holds sway as the Governor. Numerous agents were dispatched to persuade the governor ranging from personalities from the private sector to political leaders such as the interim APC national chairman and governor of Borno State. The presidency and leadership of the APC took particular exception to Bauchi State – being that it was formerly an APC State that was converted to a PDP State by the coming Senator Bala Mohammed. The Bauchi governor refused to take the bait – recalling the role he played during the transition of the then acting President Goodluck Jonathan into becoming the substantive President of the federal republic of Nigeria.

Repeated efforts were made by the presidency and the leadership of the APC. None yielded the desired result.

The APC acting with backing from the presidency decided to adopt new tactics. The type utilized partially during the Olusegun Obasanjo’s civilian regime when the foremost anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] – was used to intimidate political opponents into submission. The then President Olusegun Obasanjo and the then top boss at the EFCC, Nuhu Ribadu harassed and arrested members of the opposition and/or any opposing voices or opinions.

The APC leadership opted for blackmail against the PDP Governor of Bauchi State.

Authoritative information received by 247ureports.com reveal that the leadership of APC in Bauchi State visited the President [Muhammadu Buhari] at the presidential villa recently to present the case of the Bauchi State governor – on what available options – removal from office or launch a campaign against his administration in preparation for the elections of 2023. The President rebuffed the idea of possible impeachment citing that “I hear the boy is working in Bauchi”. But the displeased leadership of APC retorted – in their attempts to dissuade the President – that the Bauchi governor was running a corrupt government and that his family is corrupt.

The President remained unmoved.

Governor of Bauchi State – Senator Bala Mohammed

Unrelenting, the APC group led by the former speaker house of representatives departed the Presidential villa and returned to the drawing table. They commissioned agents and/or investigators to scrap for incriminating information against the Governor. It was not an easy task – as the EFCC had already opened an active eagle watch over the activities of the governor since his ascension to the seat of governor.  Unable to scrap incriminating information, the APC group moved to the family – the wives and children.

The intentions of the APC group is to put together a petition against Governor or his family and then submit the document to the President and onward to the EFCC. With the receipt of the petition, the APC group hopes to begin a campaign to tarnish the Bala Mohammed administration. The campaign is slated to take off at the 2year marker of Bala Mohammed administration.

The same is the case in Abia State where the Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu had been in talks with the APC regarding his entry into the national ruling party. Sources tell 247ureports.com the Abia State had already accepted to dump the PDP for APC before developing a cold feet at the 11th hour through the intervention of his kinsmen who pointed to the membership of the former Governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu in the APC as potentially detrimental for his [Ikpeazu] survival in the party.

Through this, the APC leadership on the national level have inundated the presidency with volumes of petitions requesting for the arrest and prosecution of members of the Abia State executive cabinet. For reasons unknown to this news medium, the EFCC and other anti-graft agencies have yet to act on the petitions. It is uncertain whether the contents of the petition rises to level of actionable.

Governor of Abia State – Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu

The politics of 2023 presidential elections may appear calm to the untrained eye not knowledgeable of the intricacies of the Nigerian unique volatilities. To the trained eye, it is not.

The APC understands the dismal performance of the Buhari administration will certainly result to the APC losing power to any formidable opposition party – likely the PDP. For this reason, the likely would-be presidential aspirants in the APC find themselves in desperate mode stuck between a rock and a hard place. To ensure the APC retains power beyond 2023, the movers and shakers within the PDP must be checkmated.

….Organises Training on Water Sanitation and Hygiene as prerequisites

By Joy Gidani

As part of efforts to promote SDGs, a Non Governmental Organisation,  Transfer of Appropriate Sustainable Technology and Expertise,  (TASTE) Headquartered in Jos, has commenced a 3- day training on Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) for members of Gwagwada community in Chikun LGA of Kaduna state, Northwest Nigeria.

The training is aimed at helping  communities combat the various effects of water borne diseases and to promote healthier societies.

Declaring the program open, the Chairman, Chikun Local Government Area, Samaila Leeman tasked the participants to take the training seriously as the growth and development of their community largely depends on it.

He further called on the organizers to extend their hands of charity to other communities who suffer similar water related issues.

The Program Director-TASTE NG. Jonathan Makan, said the project through the help of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) reiterated the commitment of the NGO through its funder to promoting healthier societies.

“Government cannot do everything, so there are organizations that help communities like yours to compliment what government is doing, that is why USAID saw it for to support local government and State to reach out to your community with the provision of water to see how they can curtail water related diseases and infections.

According to Makan, the participants will be trained as health promoters who will also train other members of their community about the importance of hygiene and the hazards of poor sanitation, like indiscriminate dumping of watse and open defecation which have boomerang effects on the environment and general health of society.

“It is your responsibility to take care of the water project and ensure that it is maintained so that members of the community can benefit from it for a long time to come”.

He further stated that the training is a pre-requisite activity towards the establishment of bore hole in a beneficiary community, and for every borehole drilled, four toilets are built along side.

Gwagwada community will be the first community to benefit from this USAID sponsored project with a total of three boreholes to be constructed.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Dr. Mahmoud Isa-Dutse as Executive Director on the Board of Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) in Jedda, Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Dutse is the immediate past Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning. He has enormously interacted with development partners and international financial institutions during his tenure as Permanent Secretary. He is quite familiar with the modus operandi of multilateral institutions such as IsDB and he is well respected in those institutions.

During his tenure as Permanent Secretary, he represented Nigeria on Boards of Governors/Directors of African Export-Import Bank, Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Fund for International Development, World Bank, African Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank, ECOWAS Bank for Investment, Central bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), among others.

The position of Executive Director on the Board of IsDB is non-residential (part time). Executive Directors travel to attend Board meetings quarterly or as determined by management to consider critical policy issues.

Before his appointment as Permanent Secretary, Dutse was the Acting Chairman and subsequently a Non-Executive Director of the Emerging African Infrastructure Fund (EAIF). He is a renowned banker with 23 years vast experience in the financial sector, having graduated in Economics with MBA and Ph.D in Business Administration.

Dr. Dutse is taking over from Alhaji Shuaibu Gambo who was appointed on 1st July, 2011 and has held the position for about 10 years.

The new Executive Director is expected to bring to the Board new ideas, innovations and contribution and provide Nigeria with opportunity for a voice to demand and access additional resources from the Bank.

Nigeria purchased 7.65 percent of the capital stock of the IsDB in 2010. The acquisition entitled the country to a single-country constituency as against the previous 11 country-constituency to which Nigeria previously belonged. It also entitles the country to a Permanent Seat on the Bank’s Executive Board of Directors.

In her reaction to the appointment, Honourable Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, thanked the President and Commander-in-Chief for the appointment. She noted the expertise of Isa-Dutse whom she said has deep intellect and knowledge of development institutions.

In her words: “Dr. Isa-Dutse has the needed experience and knowledge that is required to inject new ideas, innovation and contribution on behalf of Nigeria on the Board of the bank. He has very impressive credentials for the position.”
