2021 Billiri Crisis: Tangale Women Ask Gov Yahaya Of Gombe State To Release Report Of Commission Of Inquiry

Women under the auspices of Tangale Community Development Association (TCDA) have called on Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State to make public the report of the commission of inquiry into the 2021 Billiri crisis.

They made the call shortly after a meeting held in Billiri.

The women who expressed concern over misrepresentation of the crisis wondered how an attack by miscreants on Tangale women conducting peaceful protest turned out to be interpreted as religious crisis.

They said it remains a fact that Tangale women were conducting a peaceful protest over a rumour that Governor Yahaya was going to impose an unpopular candidate as Mai Tangle on the Tangale people when miscreants started attacking them, leading to burning of businesses and worship houses by yet to be identified persons.

They challenged the governor to quickly make public findings of the commission, since he was quick to pay compensation to the people who suffered losses.

The governor had disbursed over N500 million from Billiri Local Council money in the Joint State/LGA account to pay compensation to people who claimed damages in the Billiri crisis.

The TCDA women also called for the immediate release of those they refer to as “innocently incacerated” in connection with the crisis without trial, calling on the governor to go after the real culprits.

The lead speaker, Mrs. Mary Simon said, “We are parents, and are pained by the fact that our children are incacerated for an offense they did not commit.

“The government should go after the real people,” she said.

Also speaking, Malama Elizabeth said, “we are restless because of the Tangale people incacerated.

“Their wives and children have become miserable, and while in prison, some of them have even lost their parents, who died resulting from depression and the likes, because of the situation,” she said.

The women said the action taken by Governor Yahaya soon after the protest of imposing the same unpopular candidate on Tangale people have vindicated them.

However, an open letter recently written and released by Tangale elders and three other Tangale sociocultural groups said the person the governor announced as Mai Tangle is not a Tangale man.

AFCON Airport Saga: Libya Rejects CAF’s Decision, To Appeal Judgement

By Sunday Elijah

The Libya Football Federation (LFF) says it will file an appeal to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the punishment meted out to its team on the botched 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Nigeria.

Reports say that the Super Eagles of Nigeria were subjected to flight challenges, including a redirected flight, over 18 hours of delays, and logistical issues during a trip for return leg of the 1-0 match in favour of Nigeria in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

As a result, CAF canceled the match, awarding three goals and three points to the Super Eagles while slamming a $50,000 fine on the Libyans.

A statement by CAF Disciplinary Board in its ruling on Saturday, signed by the chairman, Ousmane Kane, said the Disciplinary Board ruled met and decided as follows:

“The Libya Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

“The match No. 87 Libya v. Nigeria of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled to be played on 15 October in Benghazi) declared lost by forfeit by Libya (by a score of 3-0).

“The Libya Football Federation is ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000. The fine is to be paid within 60 days of notification of the present decision. All other and further motions or prayers for relief are dismissed.”

However, according to Libyan outlet alwasat.ly, the LFF considers as unfair the decision that has placed them at the bottom of Group D in the AFCON qualifiers.

The Libyan authorities have therefore engaged the services of a Tunisian lawyer, Ali Abbas, to defend their position.

The outcome of this appeal could have significant implications for the ongoing qualification process, particularly for Nigeria, who currently needs only one more point to secure their place in the competition in Morocco.

The Director General (D-G) of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), Retire DIG, Johnson Kokumo, has said that curbing small arms and light weapons in circulation is key to reducing violent crimes in Nigeria.

Kokumo said this yesterday when he paid a working visit to Kaduna, the North West Zonal Office of the NCCSALW.

He said that the proliferation of small arms and light weapons are fueling banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, sucessionists agitations and other forms of crimes in Nigeria.

Kokumo added that no community or society in the country that is free of crimes and criminal activities .

He therefore said the federal government in its wisdom, searched into the root cause, adding that controlling the proliferation of small arms and light weapons would reduce the rate of crime and criminal activities to the bearest minimum.

The D-G said the centre had retrieved recovered weapons from almost all the arms bearing agencies in Nigeria, stressing that it is the statutory obligation of the NCCSALW.

He also stressed that it is not a responsibly for any arms bearing agency of government to recover weapons and keep them to themselves as clearly stated it the NCCSALW’s act.

“Arms bearing agencies are supposed to hand over recovered weapons to the NCCSALW for documentation, and profiling with a view of even investigating the sources of the weapons before they are eventually destroyed.

“I assumed leadership of the centre in March 2024, and we have had an excercise where we destroyed over 2,400 assorted weapons. These weapons were retrieved from arms bearing agencies,”he said.

The NCCSLW boss therefore implored all stakeholders especially representatives of all arms bearing agencies to convey the message that weapons they recovered from criminal elements are not meant for their keep.

By Justina Auta

Some stakeholders on Tuesday said sending underage live-in househelps to school does not justify their been used as workers, as it exposes them to violence, sexual exploitation and trafficking.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, the stakeholders decried the number of recorded cases of abuse, maltreatment and other forms of violence meted on these children.

Mrs Mariam Gbadebo, Founder and Executive Director, Mariam Adeola Gbadebo (MAG) Foundation, said that some people felt that, sending their underage domestic help to school justified everything.

“There are so many adults out there who do not have jobs, for you to now say that it is a child that you want to engage in domestic labor.

“What are the reasons people engage in domestic labor? To take care of the children, to watch the household?

“Who is better to do it than an adult? Why would you put a child in domestic labour to watch over children?

“So we speak strongly against it. We say it is not acceptable, and it still forms under a harmful practice, exposes them to violence, child trafficking, child labour and child sex exploitation,”she said.

Mrs Elizabeth Duile, Chief Operating Officer, Civitas Auxillium Foundation (CAF), stressed the need to ensure that all children, especially the vulnerable in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp had access to education.

Duile emphasised that education would enable them explore their potentials and free them from any form of exploitations, abuse and violence.

” Every child has a vision. Most of these children in IDP camps also dream of becoming great and successful, but they are forced to live in such state due to certain conditions.

“We all have a role to play to ensure that these children achieve their vision, or else we will be putting our future and the future of those in school at risk,” she said.

Mrs Bassey Ita-Ikpang, FCT Chairperson, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), advocated for full implementation of policies that would end child labour, trafficking and hawking.

“You can not hide under the guise of helping these vulnerable children by sending them to school to exploit them.

“All legal instruments should be put in place to stop all these, as it exposes them to all forms of violence, sexual abuse, maltreatment and harmful practices,” she said.

Ita-Ikpang said that NAWOJ had been championing advocacies to encourage access and enrollment of the girl-child to education.

“We strongly believe that all children should be in school, especially the girl-child.

“We are working hard to see that more children are in school through our programmes, to enable them actualise their vision for the future,” she said.

Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, former Minister of Women Affairs recently warned against underage helps and maltreatment, adding that severe punishment awaits perpetrators of inhuman treatment.

Kennedy-Ohanenye gave the warning when the police paraded an Anambra-based lawyer, Adachukwu Okafor, who was arrested for allegedly assaulting her 10-year-old househelp.

She said that apart from the domestication and implementation of the Child Rights Act, the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act and others, government would implement other strategies to stop the practice.

She said that it had recently become prevalent in many parts of the country.

“The minister thanked President Bola Tinubu for given her the powers to protect the rights of women and children.

“I am telling Nigerians, no more taking a child under 18 as househelp. We are launching all sorts of measures to protect women and children.

“As you employ a child under 18 years, the police will not rest and I also will not rest, until we stop all these societal ills and prosecute offenders,” The minister said.

On his part, ACP Olumiyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), assured of thorough investigation and prosecution of such related cases.

Adejobi, who was represented by CSP Olabisi Okuwobi, the National Coordinator, Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, urged Nigerians to take the warning against employment of underage children as househelps seriously.

According to a report by United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), about half of all children aged 5-14 years (47 per cent), or 21 million children in Nigeria are involved in child labour.

A survey by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed that overall, of children five years to 17 years old, 50.5 per cent (31,756,302 children) are engaged in economic activity.

Also, 39.2 per cent (24,673,485) were involved in child labour and 22.9 per cent (14,390,353) are involved in hazardous work. (NAN)
