The Northern Governors Forum has sympathised with the Nigerian Army over the killing of 12 soldiers in Konshisha LGA, Benue State, describing it as a condemnable act which must not be allowed to happen again as it is capable of demoralising security personnel from giving their best to fighting insecurity in the country.

Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Plateau State Simon Bako Lalong in a statement said the forum sympathises with the families of the slain soldiers and the Nigerian Army over this unfortunate incident, which occured when the soldiers were on an assignment to ensure the security of lives and properties.

The Forum urges the Army not to be discouraged by the act and continue carrying out their legitimate duty of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and assisting in maintaining internal security, particularly at this time when the nation is confronted by many criminal activities.

While pledging its continued support and collaboration to the Armed Forces and the security services in general, the Northern Governors appealed to the Army to remain professional and exercise caution and restraint even as they work hard to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

The Governors also called on the citizens to assist the security forces with useful information that will lead to the arrest of those behind the killing of the soldiers as well as the apprehension of other criminals tormenting innocent citizens across the country.

Ramadan: Nigerian Church Distributes Food Items to Underprivileged Muslims

By Iliya Kure

A Church in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry, has distributed food items comprising bags of millets, rice and maize to underprivileged Muslims in Kaduna metropolis.

This is with a view to strengthen Christian-Muslim relations, promote better understanding and spirit of togetherness, even as the Muslims commence their 30-day Ramadan fast on Tuesday.

“We do this in order to strengthen peaceful co-existence and religious tolerance among different faith-based organizations, in order to live in peace and harmony according to the teachings of the holy books,” General Overseer of the Church, Pastor Yohanna Buru told journalists in Kaduna

Each year during Ramadan, the Church shares food items in Muslim communities to encourage them to be fully committed and devoted to fasting and praying.

According to Pastor Buru, this year marks the seventh time the Church is involved in distribution of grains and other foodstuff to large number of street beggars, internally displaced persons, children at orphanage homes and Muslims in prisons.

He stressed the need for the Church to support underprivileged Muslims in view of the hardship brought about by the Corona Virus pandemic, which has affected all spheres of human endeavours.

The cleric called on wealthy Muslims to equally remember the less-privileged in the society, so they could participate fully in the 30-day Ramadan fast.

“We want the poor Muslims to pray for peace stability in the country, for almighty God to bring an end to daily killing, kidnapping and banditry”

Pastor Buru added that as usual, the church is planning to bail out some Muslims prisoners to enable them participate in the 30-day fasting with friends and families.

The Christian leader who congratulated Muslims on the Arrival of Ramadan month, also urged Imams & Ulamas to intensify prayers for peace and unity of the country.

Buru said every year he leads a team of Christian leaders to the palace of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, for interfaith breaking of Ramadan fast, to promote peace and unity.

“We are one family under God. We must remember that we worship one God, and we are from the family of Adam and eve. We all have our holy books from One God; therefore, we must join hands to support each other”

He also stated that he has been joining sheikh Dahiru Bauchi and other top Islamic clerics during the season to boost Christian-Muslim relations

Responding, one of the disabled persons that received the food items, Mallam Muntari Saleh, who is the Public Relation Officer of Northern Blind Forum, expressed joy over the gesture by the Church.

He confirmed that every year, the Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry donates food items to many disabled persons.

Muntari called on Islamic leaders and organisations to always remember the poor during the Ramadan period.

2023 Presidential Elections: We Did Not Endorse Wike, Others – NYLF

By Iliya Kure

A Nigerian political group, Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) has criticised the BBC and Voice of America, among other media, for carrying reports saying the group has endorsed Rivers State Governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike, as presidential candidate ahead of the 2023 general elections.

A statement by its National Chairman, Elliot Afiyo, made available to AFRICA PRIME NEWS says, the group’s political committee has submitted only three politicians, “Senator Bala Mohammed, Chief Raymond A. Dokpesi and Senator Bola Tinunbu were recommended for consideration by the NEC.”

The group said despite press conference in Kano, conducted by Chairman of its Political Committee, Dr. Sadiq Abubakar to shed light on the position of the NYLF, some media organizations went ahead to broadcast and print erroneous reports.

“We then wondered from where the BBC and VOA got their own report that included Governor Nyesom Wike among the recommended persons and was subsequently endorsed by the NEC of the NYLF” the statement says.

The statement added that its “NEC meeting (held) in Sokoto was purposely convened to receive the political committee’s Report and fix a date for the Delegates conference, during which the delegates comprising all the Chairmen and Secretaries of the 42 affiliated Youth Organizations and all the Zonal Officers will vote. The candidate to be endorsed must get 2/3 of the total votes.”

The group therefore advised Nigerians to disregard any information on endorsement of candidates by NYLF for 2023 presidential elections, adding that it would not endorse anybody until the 20th of May, 2021, through a process that will be conducted in public view and in a transparent manner.

THE FULL STATEMENT

A Press Release by Comrade Elliot Afiyo, National Chairman of the Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) on the 11th of April, 2021 at Sokoto.

The attention of the Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) has been drawn to so many publications in print and electronic media both in National and International Media Organizations claiming that the NYLF has endorsed Senator Bala Mohammed, Chief Raymond Dokpesi or Senator Bola Tinunbu as our preferred Candidates for 2023 presidential elections during our NEC meeting in Sokoto on the 10th of April, 2021.

Despite the fact that our Political Committee Chairman, Dr. Sadiq Abubakar has held a Press Conference in Kano to clarify the position of the NYLF, yet, some media organizations went ahead to broadcasting and printing the erroneous Report.

To this end, I wish to state clearly that the NEC meeting in Sokoto was purposely convened to receive the political committee’s Report and fix a date for the Delegates Conference during which the Delegates comprising all the Chairmen and Secretaries of the 42 affiliated Youth Organizations and all the Zonal Officers will vote. The candidate to be endorsed must get 2/3 of the total votes.

During our NEC meeting in Gombe on the 14th of February, 2021, the NEC shortlisted thirteen (13) Politicians and directed the political committee to carry out thorough research or checking on them and put forward their recommendations to the NEC.

From the Report presented to us only Senator Bala Mohammed, Chief Raymond A. Dokpesi and Senator Bola Tinunbu were recommended for consideration by the NEC. We then wondered from where the BBC and VOA got their own report that included Governor Nyesom Wike among the recommended persons and was subsequently endorsed by the NEC of the NYLF.

We want to reiterate and state clearly without any fear of contradiction that the NYLF has not and would not endorse anybody until the 20th of May, 2021 which by the grace of God, will be done in public view and in a transparent manner.

Until then, the public should discard and disregard any information on the endorsement of Candidates by the NYLF for 2023 Presidential Elections. We are not unaware of the scheming by some groups. But we have resolved and unequivocal too, to avoid the mistake of past.

Comrade Elliot Afiyo

National Chairman.
