Addressing the myths of COVID-19 vaccine

COVID-19 Vaccine

By Martha Agas, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau Council, recently organised training for its members to enlighten them about the COVID-19 vaccine. The sensitisation became necessary because of the conspiracy theories, popularised since the COVID-19 vaccine became available globally and in Nigeria.

The training was designed to equip journalists as information managers with appropriate information in order to adequately and properly educate the people.

The training was facilitated by the Plateau House of Assembly Committee on Health.

Mr Daniel Listick, Chairman of the House Committee on Health who spoke, dispelled the rumour that the vaccine has chips and changes DNA composition.
“The vaccine does not contain chips as people are saying. People say the vaccine will change their DNA and cause infertility, there is nothing like that, all these myths are not true, “ he said.

He said building the capacity of journalists in partnership with the House, will play a significant role in improving their reporting skills in disseminating appropriate information to the public on the disease.

“ After taking the vaccine, I was okay, but others may have reactions, there are experts on ground that once this happens they know what to do, `he said.
Also, various speakers at the launching of the COVID-19 vaccination in Plateau, debunked the conspiracy theory and appealed to the people to make themselves available for vaccination.

Leading the pack, Gov. Simon Lalong said the conspiracy theories being propagated especially in the social media, is aimed at discouraging people to accept the vaccine.

Lalong said that, he, the wife, his deputy, religious and traditional leaders, took the vaccine to show example and dispel fears of various myths attached to it.

“It is important to note that the vaccine has been approved by the European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organisation, based on global clinical trials, involving 23,000 participants.

“In addition, Nigerian regulators such as National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) evaluated the vaccines upon arrival in the country.

“All of these evaluations have concluded that the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective.

“Let me reiterate that no one will be compelled to take the vaccine as the administration is totally voluntary.

“However, I wish to remind our citizens that the law criminalising the denial of COVID-19 in Plateau State is still in force.

“Therefore, those who want to engage in spreading conspiracy theories and mobilising others against taking the vaccine will not be allowed.

“ I want to reassure our people that as your governor, I will not subscribe to anything that will harm you nor affect your well-being, rather, my number one priority is to ensure your safety and good health,“ he said.

Rev.Fr. Polycarp Lubo, the State Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) who spoke, said that those who had COVID-19 disease can testify of the hardship they experienced.

He said that the arrival of the vaccine certified by NAFDAC will address the challenges posed by the scourge.

“ We should encourage those people who are doubting to come and receive the vaccine. I think the vulnerable people should be considered first,’’ he said.

Similarly, State Chairman of Jama’atu Nasril Islam, Alhaji Muhammadu Muhammadu, said he received the vaccine to demonstrate leadership by example.

He decried the proliferation of many misleading information on the vaccine and assured the government that leaders will continue to support their policies and programmes.

Prof Edmund Banwat, the Chief Medical Director, Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), said the vaccine administered to political leaders is a bold step to address the myths surrounding the vaccine and show it is safe.

“If it is not safe, these political leaders would not avail themselves to take the vaccine. The vaccine is critical to end the pandemic, ‘’he said.

Mr Williams Wadzingi, Plateau Coordinator, World Health Organisation (WHO), said enlightenment is critical to the  success of the vaccination.

Dr Innocent Emmanuel, the Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA),  Plateau Chapter, who spoke in an interview, said the COVID-19 disease has led to loss of lives, ravaged communities and caused so much havoc on the economy, “so the vaccine is critical to win the war against the disease.’’

He explained that the vaccine initially had some controversies, which prompted some countries to stop its usage, but the situation has been addressed in the affected countries.

“ It has now been confirmed that the vaccine is safe, the issue of blood clots earlier associated with the vaccine was proved to be false.

“The countries have already agreed that the vaccine should be re-administered to their people.

“ The United Nations has said its safe and this has been tested and even countries that were having problems with the vaccine have now agreed that people can be vaccinated,“ he said.

Emmanuel urged the government to involve critical stakeholders, particularly community and religious leaders, to ensure people get information on the vaccine.

The chairman said that visits to schools to enlighten students and the engagement of media houses at all levels will help in dispelling the myths of the vaccine.

Rev. Chris Damcher, the State Coordinator, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on HIV AIDs and Other Health Related Matters,  said COVID-19 disease has affected many households.

He said that the vaccine is a relief, though not without its challenges.

The coordinator said that government involving CSOs in sensitisation campaigns on the disease and vaccine would have the desired impact, as rural people perceive the disease as a “ city issue.’’ (NANFeature)

Gov. Lalong Peace Building In Plateau Exemplary – Stakeholders

0

Governor Simon  Lalong has been commended for his peace efforts that have restored confidence and mitigated human disasters associated with violence and conflicts in Plateau State.

Speakers at a the launch of a book on Disaster and Conflict in Abuja described the Governor as a peacemaker who has become a shining example for de-escalating violence and creating sustainable platform for mutual understanding and dialogue.

The Book facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs and Special Duties examined the challenges of disasters that are generated from conflicts in Nigeria and how to mitigate them.

Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs and Special Duties Sen. George Akume said Nigerians need to continue to foster peaceful coexistence as a way of preventing disasters that end up hurting development. He said Governor Lalong has proven to be one of the examples of leaders who can be relied upon to galvanise people to do the right thing by embracing one another.

Former Deputy Senate President Nasiru Mantu also said the search for peace in Nigeria cannot succeed without people respecting one another and realising that God is the creator of all while differences in tribe, religion, geography and even orientations are matters that cannot be blamed on humanity as people never chose where to be born or the families to be born in.

He said this is why people must be able to accept one another as human beings and stop fighting. He said Governor Lalong has been able to achieve this by enabling people of various backgrounds to have a sense of belonging which has doused tensions and made peace possible in Plateau State.

Governor Lalong who praised the author of the book for conducting the research said peace remains his cardinal objective and as such, he will not relent in making sure that people work together to engender good relations.

He urged all Nigerians to support peaceful coexistence as conflicts do not only cause disasters, but leave a huge burden on development.

An Exposé on the Tangale Chieftaincy Crisis & the Implications for the Middle Belt, Nigeria

0

By Lamela Umaru Lakorok

The ongoing Mai Tangle stool debacle in the Tangale nation is emblematic of the Fulani conquest strategy in Gombe State, and therefore, a wake-up call to all minority tribes in the Middle Belt of Nigeria. We must draw the attention of the world to the design and implementation of the Dan Fodio conquest motif that was interrupted by the British colonization of Nigeria. The Fulani has claimed that the end of the British colonial government, which had favored them in the indirect rule implemented in Northern Nigeria, was the start of their full control of Nigeria.

Hindsight, they say, is 20/20. We see the past actions of the Fulani emirate system where they used the Middle Belt military powerhouse to almost eliminate the Igbo tribe in the name of patriotism and unity of Nigeria. We see the use of religion as a political tool to divide families and tribes both in the past and the present. For the Fulani enthusiasts, it is not enough that one embraces Islam, one must accept the Fulani language and culture as tantamount to the religion itself or one is considered a second-class Muslim. Their hiding behind religion to impose their political rule on a people is the brains behind the recent developments in the traditional rulership of Tula, Dadiya, and Tangale in Gombe state. The government imposed on these tribal groups Muslim rulers of a specific blend. For instance, previous Mai Tangles had embraced Islam and have many descendants who are Muslim, including one of the contestants for the current throne won by Dr. Musa Idris Mai Yamba. With a stellar resume in law enforcement that culminated in the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police, Alh Ahmadu Gimba Magaji was not considered a worthy Muslim by Gov. Inuwa Yahaya. What is it in Mallam Mai Shanu that Gov. Yahaya finds qualifying for the Mai Tangle stool? The fact that he has certificates in Public Administration and Human Resources Management? Well, apparently, he would not find his education useful in Tangale because he could neither administer nor manage a people he does not know, and they do not like him. However, we know that his marriage to a Fulani woman guarantees a Fulani progeny will later rule Tangale were this callous act to stand. Does this sound familiar? If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it is a duck. We know the strategy, Gov. Yahaya!

Look at the traditional rulers of the minority tribal groups in Gombe state. Why do they get wives from the Fulani tribe? Do the Fulanis otherwise intermarry with Muslims of minority tribes? Why only their rulers? Narrow your vision to the Tangale situation, why is the Hakimi of Bare and a certain prominent Muslim family in Bare so intent on having Mallam Danladi Mai Shanu as the Mai Tangle? The man does not live in Tangale land, he does not associate with Tangale people, he does not own any property in Tangale and does not speak the Tangale language. Why did the Galadima of Bare and the Hakimi of Tudu Kwaya vote for such a man and not Alh Magaji who, as mentioned above, is a Muslim with an impressive resume and lives in Billiri? Why do they believe Gov. Yahaya should choose his candidate from Gombe and bring him to the Mai Tangle palace? If the choice of the governor were to stay, Mallam Mai Shanu’s half-Fulani posterity will eventually be the rulers of Tangale, and this by the sanction and blessings of the Galadima and Fawu families in Bare. When the Tangale people demand the recognition and installation of the legitimately elected ruler, they hear certain Muslims hiding behind the pretext of religion and saying the unquestionable action of the governor was the will of God. In other words, the governor is now the god of the Tangale people. Such myopic reasoning collapses the moment you reverse the scenario.

When one begins to analyze the strategy above, one ponders on the recent crisis in Billiri and notices that only certain families were “targeted” as if to make a statement. However, before you conclude this was the case, ask yourself what has the burning of the houses and a Mosque got to do with the protest? Why the quick write-up by someone purporting to be Alhassan Fawu alleging 70 Mosques were burnt in Billiri and asking for the sympathy of the Islamic world? Also remember that in the history of Tangale religious pluralism where Christians are the majority, there had never been a religious conflict in Tangale, not even when Tangale Christians were killed in Gombe and Bauchi. Why the random arrests of people all over Tangale and Kaltungo? Did the victims know who attacked their home? If so, why hasn’t anyone been charged? Instead, more people are being arrested at the instigation of the Galadima family members. Did they know who attacked their family or should we start looking at the possibility of “self-inflicted wounds”? Every Tangale person abhors the violence and the resultant tarnishing of Tangale image. Yet, the governor does not hesitate to impose a curfew on all Tangale people and pledge to compensate these specific families for their loss. Who was it that attacked two innocent women cracking the head of one with a stone and breaking the leg of another, the very incident that started the violence? No one is either arrested or charged with that crime. Why is there a move by the same group of people to separate Tangale by religion? The Tangale Community Development Association is not a religious organization. Why the recent attempts to circumvent the organization by some people? If anyone wonders why the Tangale nation is in crisis today, one does not need to look further away from the synopsis above. There is a systematic plan to destabilize Tangale by a specific group of people who want to advance the cause of the Fulanization of the minority tribal groups beyond Tangale-Waja.

The inauguration of a so-called Commission of Inquiry into Billiri Violent Protests by Gov. Yahaya is a farse. The governor has portrayed himself as an objective leader seeking truth through the establishment of a commission. However, the governor is an interested party in the scuffle. If the purpose of the commission is to explore the truth of what led to the killings and wanton destruction of property during the crisis, why did the governor arrest and continues to arrest people without charges? He has already acted as prosecutor, judge, jury, and executioner when he not only arrested the people, but also denied them bail according to the rule of law. Setting up a commission of inquiry two months after the event, during which time the governor made repulsive and inciteful comments about the situation and the people of Tangale, is dubious. We advise the National Assembly to set up an independent committee because the governor’s integrity is compromised, and a committee setup by him is already tainted by his actions.

Compare the response of Gov. Yahaya to the Galadima and Fawu families in Bare, with his response to the recent burning of homes and places of worship in Nyuwar, Lunguda. Eyewitnesses reported seeing strangers on motorcycles the day of the attack. Co-incidentally, the chief security officer of the state, the governor, happens to have his phone off for the rest of the day and night of the attack. No one is arrested or held responsible for the violence, and the state is promising food relief to the villagers who lost everything. Watch, you will see that the governor is blaming this on communal clashes, not religion. Why were churches burnt down in a “communal clash”? Again, the strategy of divide and rule is for the first time attempting to divide the Lunguda and Waja tribes. Next would be Waja and Cham, and who knows what comes next? The end goal is the same, conquest of the tribes by subversion. The governor must stop hiding behind the façade.

It is time for Tangale-Waja, and indeed, all the Middle Belt region, to wake up and try to save what is left of their identities. Do not be deceived by the couching of religion, it is a wolf in sheep clothing. The Fulani agenda, as seen in all of Nigeria, is the desire for power. Gombe State is only symptomatic of the problem. Nigeria is at risk of dismemberment. We do not cede our tribal rights and identities to another. It is for this reason that the Tangale people remain united in purpose against the lawless actions of the governor.

Finally, we extend our heartfelt condolences to our neighbors in Jessu and Nyuwar for the recent mayhem that resulted in the loss of lives and properties. We caution everyone in Tangale-Waja (Gombe South) to be wary of the enemy’s tactic of divide and rule. We have co-existed for centuries and will continue to exist together until the end of time. Please, extend a hand of love and fellowship in place of hate and violence. Let there be room for conversation and discussion of sensitive subjects, rather than emotions. Let us make use of our elders from neighboring tribes to initiate reconciliation where needed.

“A stitch in time saves nine”

Long Live Dr. Musa Idris Mai Yamba, Long Live Tangale, Long Live Tangale-Waja, Long Live Gombe state

No Reason For Solidarity Strikes In Rivers — Wike Tells NBA, Judicial Staff Union

0

Rivers State Gov. Nyesom Wike says members of the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria and Nigerian Bar Association have no reason to embark on Solidarity strike in the State.

Wike stated this in Port Harcourt on Monday while addressing members of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) who were on a solidarity protest with the striking Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) concerning financial autonomy for the Judiciary.

“My position concerning the JUSUN strike in Rivers State is simple. Rivers State has painstakingly implementing financial autonomy for the State’s Judiciary. We shouldn’t suffer solidarity strikes because other states are not implementing same.

“Non implementing states can be held to task but there is really no reason for a solidarity strike or protest in Rivers State, I used the opportunity to request for Rivers State’s JUSUN to call off the strike and open the courts in Rivers State.

“If another state is not implementing financial autonomy why should Rivers State suffer for it ? he queried

Nigerian Currency:  Was N60 Billion Printed Or Not — Wike Challenges CBN Gov.

0

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, says the claims by Edo state, Godwin Obaseki that Federal Government printed about N60 Billion to share to the federating units in March cannot be regarded as spurious.

The governor has therefore challenged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to unequivocally declare if money was printed or not.

Governor Wike stated this while briefing journalists shortly after he attended the child dedication of Mr and Mrs Uche Nwosu in Abuja on Sunday.

His word: “Obaseki was in APC, so he understands them. So, Obaseki couldn’t have come from the blues to say they printed N60 billion. He knows them.”

Governor Wike, said it was regrettable that instead of the Governor of Central Bank, Mr. Godwin Emefiele to address the issue raised by Govenor Obaseki, he opted to issue a veiled threat to states to pay back bailout loan given to them by the federal government.

“Instead of answering the question he ( Emefiele) said governors have to pay back the bailout loan. Bailout is a loan, if you want to take it, go and take it. But answer the question whether money was printed or not printed.”

The governor said his decision to attend Uche Nwosu’s (the son in law of former Imo State governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha) child dedication, is devoid of politics or political affiliation.

He explained that his relationship with Senator Okorocha, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) started in 1999 when he was the chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

“I’ve known him (Okorocha) since 1999 when I was chairman of council. I didn’t know him today, so I don’t because of politics or whatever it is, abandon people. It is my character to always keep my friendship with people. It is not based on party or politics. Friendship is friendship.”

Governor Wike , urged Senator Okorocha and his wife not to be dispirited by the political persecution they are currently facing. According to him, the kind of political battle they have been through will cause them to rely on God and not on their mortal strength.

He further charged Senator Okorocha to consider joining hands with Nigerians who are determined to pull Nigeria from the brinks of economic collapse to path of economic prosperity.

He lauded Uche Nwosu and his wife, Uloma, for organizing the praise and worship church service to dedicate their son to God.

Governor Wike, explained that the reason why he has been able to survive several fierce political battles is because he has never stopped to give thanks to God.

“Because of my thanksgiving they can never defeat me. The greatest Army is God.”

The founder of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo said he has enormous respect for families and individuals who always return to show gratitude to God for what he has done for them.

The pastor commended Mr and Mrs Nwosu for dedicating their child to God. He maintained that whatever is dedicated to God shall never diminish.

Nigeria: Commission Of Inquiry Into Biliri Violent Protests Set Up

0

A commission of inquiry has been set up by the Gombe State Government to determine the causes of the Biliri Violent protests in February 2021 resulting in the loss of lives and property.

Inaugurating the Commission in Gombe, Monday, Gov. Inuwa Yahaya said “0n the face of the crisis, some people might be tempted to conclude that it emanated over the choice of a new Mai Tangle even though the protests erupted even before government took a decision on who to appoint”.

One undeniable fact, the Governor continues, is that the spread of fake news contributed immensely in the escalation of the violence.

It was in light of this, he emphasised, the Gombe State Government strongly believed that determining the causes of the crisis was needed in order to sanction those involved and take necessary measures to prevent future occurrence.

The 12 member Commission headed by Rtd Justice Mahmud Gurama as Chairman, is said to be comprised of people of impeccable character and proven integrity, drawn from diverse professional backgrounds and with extensive knowledge and experience in conflict resolution and peace building.

The Commission which has sixty days  to complete it’s assignment has 5 terms of reference which are – :   i.  to find out the remote and immediate causes of the violent protests;
ii.   to identify person or group of persons who sponsored, procured, instigated, or encouraged the violent protests and to recommend sanctions or remedial measures against such person or group of persons;
iii.   to receive and investigate complaints from victims or the families of victims and members of the public over the violent protests;
iv.   to make appropriate recommendations to Government on measures and means of preventing the future occurrence of violent protests and how to make perpetrators account for their acts; and
v.  to make such other or further recommendations as the Commission may deem fit within the ambit of the Law.

Meanwhile, the State and Local Governments have constituted committees to dialogue with the people with a view to restoring ever-lasting peace and tranquility in Billiri Local Government Area, the Governor said.

HERE UNDER IS THE FULL ADDRESS OF THE GOVERNOR AT THE INAUGURATION:-

ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY,
MUHAMMADU INUWA YAHAYA, GOVERNOR OF GOMBE STATE ON THE OCCASION OF INAUGURATION OF COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO BILLIRI VIOLENT PROTESTS HELD ON MONDAY 19TH APRIL, 2021 AT THE BANQUET HALL, GOVERNMENT HOUSE, GOMBE

Protocols

It is with gratitude to Allah (SWT) that I address you on this important occasion of the inauguration of the Commission of Inquiry into the Billiri Violent Protests that took place between 17th and 20th February, 2021.

  1. You may recall that following the death of His Royal Highness, the Mai Tangle, Abdu Buba Maisheru II; the State Government directed the Tangale Traditional Council Kingmakers to commence the selection process of his successor. However, before the government could finalize and make a pronouncement on the new Mai Tangle, some unpatriotic elements began an Endsars-type protest (codenamed #LockdownBilliri) by blocking the Gombe-Yola federal highway and all other entry points to Billiri Local Government. Thereafter, some unscrupulous and criminal elements hijacked the protest and turned it to a violent one with the support of unpatriotic purveyors of fake news via the social media.

  2. The violent protests resulted in the deaths of innocent persons, damage and destruction of valuable property including residential houses, business premises and mosques, thereby causing the displacement of families and commercial activities. Government had to intervene in order to stall the violence and restore law and order by imposing a curfew, in addition to holding wide consultations with relevant stakeholders and sensitizing the citizenry on the need to live in peace and harmony.

  3. On the face of it, some people may be tempted to conclude that the crisis emanated over the choice of a new Mai Tangle even though the protests erupted even before government took a decision on who to appoint. Some may be tempted to give the crisis a religious or political coloration or both.  However, one undeniable fact is that the spread of fake news contributed immensely in the escalation of the violence. It is in light of this that the Gombe State Government strongly believes that determining the causes of the crisis is needed in order sanction those involved and take necessary measures to prevent future occurrence.

5.  Consequently, in the exercise of the powers conferred on me as Governor by section 2 of the Commission of Inquiry Law, I constituted a Commission of Inquiry into the Billiri Violent Protests with the following terms of reference:
i.            to find out the remote and immediate causes of the violent protests;
ii.            to identify person or group of persons who sponsored, procured, instigated, or encouraged the violent protests and to recommend sanctions or remedial measures against such person or group of persons;
iii.            to receive and investigate complaints from victims or the families of victims and members of the public over the violent protests;
iv.            to make appropriate recommendations to Government on measures and means of preventing the future occurrence of violent protests and how to make perpetrators account for their acts; and
v.            to make such other or further recommendations as the Commission may deem fit within the ambit of the Law.

  1. The Commission of inquiry comprised of people of impeccable character and proven integrity, that are drawn from diverse professional backgrounds and with extensive knowledge and experience in conflict resolution and peace building. Above all, they are people with well-established objectivity in assessment of situations and people. We are confident that they will justify the confidence reposed in them by the government and good people of Gombe State.

  2. Accordingly, the Chairman and members of the Billiri Commission of Inquiry are as follows:
    a)    Retired Justice Mahmud Gurama – Chairman
    b)   Retired AIG of Police Zubairu Muazu – member
    c)    Barr. Mahmud Bappah Aliyu      – member
    d)   Sharon Faliya Cham                 – member
    e)    Rev. Bitrus Urbanus Thaba     – member
    f)      Abdulhamid Salisu Bello        – member
    g)    Victoria Mamuda Usman      – member
    h)   Barr Robert Wabida         – member
    i)      Abdullahi Jalo (Castic)        – member
    j)      Dr. Ya’u Ahmed Kashere      – member
    k)    Barrister Musa Saidu   – Secretary/member and
    l)      H. N. Nwoye ESQ.   as Counsel to the Commission

The Commission will have sixty days from today to submit its report to Government. The venue of the sitting of the Commission shall be High Court Complex, Southern Bypass, Gombe.

8.   I am confident that with the caliber of people constituted in this commission, they will discharge their duties with justice and fairness, and without any fear or favor. I call upon our people to provide the commission with honest, useful and genuine information and suggestions in order to move our state forward. Under no circumstances should this exercise be turned into a witch-hunting game.

  1. While this Commission of Inquiry was being constituted, the state government has taken steps to stabilize the situation in Billiri. The State and Local Governments have constituted committees to dialogue between the people with a view to restoring ever-lasting peace and tranquility in Billiri Local Government. In order to cushion the effects of the violent protests, government has recently distributed a considerable quantity of palliatives to the people directly and indirectly affected by the crisis. A high-powered committee under the Chairmanship of the Honourable Commissioner of Internal Security and Ethical Orientation was constituted to take stock of lives lost and property destroyed with a view to making recommendations to Government for possible assistance and compensation.

  2. I want to place on record our gratitude to the law enforcement agencies for their tremendous show of patriotism, commitment, professionalism and resilience before, during and after the crisis. It is my hope that traditional, religious, political and community leaders will encourage our people to embrace our common humanity. We must all learn to respect the right of every life and its liberty to seek legitimate livelihoods. If we all live up to our responsibilities, the incessant loss of lives and property shall cease.

  3. On behalf of the government and people of Gombe State I heartily congratulate My Lord, the chairman and members on their appointment and thank them for accepting to serve. While I urge you to be thorough and fair discharging your responsibilities, I wish you success in executing this difficult assignment.

  4. On this note, it is my honor to formally inaugurate the Commission of Inquiry into Billiri Violent Protests.

Thank you and God Bless us all!
God Bless Gombe State
God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
