Exposed: Father Mbaka Asks For Contract As Compensation — Says Presidency

1

An outsider distilling the avalanche of verbiage, will be surprised that after supporting the President two times to win the Presidency, Father Mbaka has made a complete U-Turn, preposterously asking President Buhari to resign or be impeached, according to Presidential Media Aide, Garba Shehu.

A statement issued by the Media Aide says, “Here is the point of departure: Father Mbaka asked for a meeting and to the shock of Presidential Aides, he came accompanied by three contractors. The President graciously allowed them in, and to everyone’s surprise, Father Mbaka asked for contracts as compensation for his support.

“Anyone familiar with President Buhari knows that he doesn’t break the laid down rules in dealing with contracts or any other government business for that matter. He requested the appropriate authorities to deal with the matter in accordance with laid down rules.

“Inside the Villa, discretion prevailed, that if those pictures and requests were made public, the followers will turn against the religious leader. None of it was released. Now, this is what is eating Father Mbaka”, the statement concludes.

Benue Killings: Gov Ortom Only Sees Problems Of Others, He Doesn’t See His’ — Presidency

..wants Ortom Administration to Cooperate With FG

The President has expressed his condolences to the families of “our dear citizens who lost their loved ones in the recent spate of killings in Benue State.

A statement by Garba Shehu, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, quotes the President in reaction to the killings as saying that the rising levels of incidents, especially the killings and violence in various parts of the country calls for further collaboration with security agencies to curb its recurrence.

“He also states his disappointment and sadness to hear Samuel Ortom, the Governor of Benue State make a litany of accusations against his person and his government following the recent unfortunate incidents in the state.

“No responsible government takes pleasure in such events as the killing of the military and that of innocent citizens taking refuge in an Internally Displaced People’s camp. President Buhari is deeply pained by the terrible acts of violence happening not only in Benue State but also in other parts of the country and expects that the law enforcement agencies will go to every possible extent to catch the perpetrators of these heinous acts and bring them to justice.

“The lives of fellow citizens should not be desecrated by deploying them in political diatribe which unfortunately appeared to be the intent of the string of emotional attacks and blame laid at the doors of the President for those killings by Governor Ortom. President Buhari took an oath to defend the life and property of every citizen, a duty he takes seriously and is committed to ensuring.

“Those citizens regardless of their affiliations, who either incite, sponsor or are proven to be abettors of these atrocities will face the law squarely and be answerable for their crimes against our fellow citizens and nation.

” President Buhari continuously stresses that the strength of our country lies in our diversity in faith, culture, and traditions and attempts to sharpen the divide between northern and southern Nigeria, between Muslims and Christians, and between communities that have coexisted for centuries should be frowned upon and resisted. As Nigerians, we accuse colonial rulers of the policy of divide and rule. Today, it is our own leaders who put region against region, religion against religion, ethnic group against ethnic group and community against community.

“The future of Benue State and indeed that of the entire country lies in harmony and the respect for law, order, and the constitution. It is the only way to achieve progress and development.

“While the President will continue to keep security, police and the armed forces on their toes to be on top of their act in troubled parts of the country, the situation in the states will greatly be helped by everyone working together because that is the foundation on which progress and prosperity can be achieved.

“Benue under the Ortom administration ought to cooperate with the Federal Government in the implementation of a number of national strategies programs in addressing underlying issues militating against peace, progress and development. This can still get done when the interest of the people is placed above all other interests. A government voted into office by the people, should treat the people as its masters and not as its servants”, the statement concludes.

Nigeria: Speak Truth Against Forces Of Division –Osinbajo Tells Political Elites

Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo

… says every conflict is a result of elite failure to speak up._

Nigeria cannot afford a war and elites in the country should rise up, speak the truth against forces of division in order to preserve the unity of the country.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, stated this Tuesday in Abuja while speaking with All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders from the South-East, particularly chieftains and members from Anambra State.

According to Prof. Osinbajo, “we cannot afford a war in this country…it is the political elite that will determine what will take place. If we keep quiet, if we say nothing and hope that things will just normalize, we may be wrong. And we may find ourselves heading for something much worse than we are seeing today.”

His words: “if the political elite does not speak up, if we don’t see anything wrong in what is going on, if we allow it to continue to slide, we will endanger ourselves and endanger the future of our country.

The VP noted that “I know that every conflict is a result of elite failure, the elite failure to speak up and tell the truth to their communities, that’s the cause of every one of these civil conflicts.

“So, I would urge that we speak up. I would urge that we stand for something. Sometimes it’s dangerous to stand for something. But the greater danger of course, is to keep quiet.”

Continuing, Prof. Osinbajo cautioned that “the thing about the kinds of conflicts in these parts of the world is that it is usually a war without end. Everyone who thinks that they have some money stored up somewhere is wrong, you will eventually run out.

Recalling a personal experience he observed in Somalia in the 90s when he went there to work with the United Nations, the VP said he saw a Supreme Court Justice whom he had known before queuing up for food in the aftermath of civil conflicts in the country.

“Everyone who thinks they can go and hide somewhere, you won’t even find a place. In the end, everyone will suffer. Parents, children, young people, old people, will suffer.”

Speaking about the forthcoming primaries for the governorship election in Anambra State, the Vice President said a fair process or fairness of justice will be fundamental in ensuring victory for the party at the polls.

Prof. Osinbajo further noted that “to be fair and just is not the responsibility for spirits, it is the responsibility for men and women of our party, especially the leadership.”

Party chieftains present at the meeting included former Senate President, Mr Ken Nnamani; Minister of State for Mines & Steel Development, Mr Uche Ogah, Minister of State for Labour & Productivity, other party leaders and members from the South-East, and the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, among others.

Representatives of Several Youth Groups in Monrovia and its environs have amplified calls to the government of Liberia for the establishment of War Crimes Court in seeking justice for war victims in the country.

Speaking to Reality Online in Monrovia, the group of youth leaders asserted that they foresee a dark cloud over Liberia in the upcoming days, if government refuses to endorse the establishment of the war crimes court to prosecute warlords who have committed atrocities during the Liberian civil war and living with impunity.

They added that the abolishment of the sounds of guns does not indicate full existence of peace in the country, and government must institute measure to bring to justice actors in the bloody Liberian civil crisis.

The group of youth leaders spoke at the conclusion of a one day Youth Civil Engagement Session organized by the Civil Peace Service Project, a non governmental organization  under the YMCA Liberia on Thursday in Monrovia.

For her part, the Project Coordinator of Civil Peace Service Project, Decontee George lauded the group of young people for their involvement in the project and encouraged them to serve as peace ambassadors in their various environments.

She further revealed that the organization of such initiative is to enlighten the minds of young people on the negative impact of the civil war in order to save the upcoming generation from similar circumstances

Nigeria: Insecurity, Mass Disengagement Of Workers In Kaduna Worrisome — NLC

0

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Kaduna state council has described as worrisome the spate of challenges facing workers in the state, especially the disengagement of workers embarked upon by Governor Nasir el-Rufai.

Chairman NLC, Kaduna state council, Comrade Ayuba Magaji Suleiman said that the disengagement seeped through the state and local government sectors, while other sectors are being threatened, noting that the state is also facing untold hardship from insecurity particularly banditry and kidnapping and after effects of Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the NLC Kaduna state council Pre May Day Symposium 2021 with the theme; ‘Covid-19 Pandemic, Social and Economic Crises: Challenges for Decent Jobs, Social Protection and Peoples Welfare’, Comrade Suleiman said, “as a council we are facing serious challenges including the ongoing disengagement of workers in the state and local governments.

“We have over 4,000 state workers disengaged. In the local government over 1,700 were disengaged, primary healthcare over 1,700 were disengaged, SUBEB good number of members were disengaged. At the state level, over 27 workers of KSMC (Kaduna State Media Corporation) were disengaged and more heads are going to roll.

“But that would not stop us from identifying ourselves as leaders of Kaduna state. The socio economic index in Nigeria showed that there is 33% official unemployment, 50% open unemployment, inflation rate in the country 18%. Nigeria has become poverty capital of the world with over 75%.

“We are also facing insecurity, kidnapping, banditry, we are also facing an emergency with the advent of Covid-19. With all these, its saddening and challenging for the state to send 4,000 of its workforce packing. Its our duty to ensure that jobs are being retained.

“All the international and national labour laws were violated by Kaduna state government in termination of employment Section 58 of International Labour Law; Sections 11 and 20 of NLC. Kaduna state government is sacking workers without employing more.

“As leaders, we are not going to be weakened, deterred, or discouraged, the last NLC virtual NEC meeting resolved that the state council will embark on 5-day strike from public to private sectors. Then the second phase, all workers in the country both public and private sectors will embark on a 5-day strike. Then a legal case will be instituted once the courts are open.”

South Africa’s Stellenbosch University Opens School for Climate Studies

0

Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister Dr Blade Nzimande, has welcomed the establishment of a new School of Climate Studies at Stellenbosch University, which will be officially launched in June later this year.

Nzimande said the establishment of an academic school focusing on climate change is a potentially promising step to enable the country’s academics and students to build a well-rounded body of scientific knowledge and skills to enable, not only a better understanding of the problems, but also sustainable responses to various new challenges facing humanity.

“Global humanity is currently faced with the fourfold crises of COVID-19; deepening economic crises; the crisis of families, household and communities to make ends meet and climate change,” Nzimande said in a statement.

He said the economic destruction of the earth’s biosphere and ecological systems in turn has created a crisis in human sustainability, with its most devastating effects felt by the working people and poor across the globe.

More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has acted as an accelerant on the widening gulf between rich and poor.

“I hope this will set a trend for our other universities and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges to establish similar initiatives focusing on various aspects of the multi-sectoral and multidimensional challenges and opportunities presented by climate change, and its interconnectedness with other social and natural phenomena.

“Government hopes that the university will collaborate with other higher education institutions, especially Historically Disadvantaged Institutions (HDIs), in promoting new scholarship to face new problems confronting current and future generations. Such collaboration is crucial as no single institution could possibly achieve this task on its own,” the Minister said.

The Ministry, for the first time, brings together higher education with science and innovation, thus presenting an opportunity to “enrich our understanding of the systemic issues rethinking and re-engineering to mitigate and adapt to the vagaries of climate uncertainty”.

According to the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and most of the scientific community, human activity has had definite causal effects on global warming and climate change, resulting in increasing temperatures, rising sea levels and a range of other impacts.

“This threatens every aspect of human endeavour, including water supply, infrastructure, public health, coastal habitats and food security, to mention a few. But we all know that the effects of climate change will be worse in poor and developing countries like our country, regardless of its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions,” Nzimande said.

He said all South African universities and TVET colleges must urgently plan their differentiated and collective contributions to help not only better understand climate change dynamics, but also to work towards changing the world for a better and more equal humanity.
