Every year, May 3rd is set aside as a day to call to mind the struggles the principles of journalism and the many challenges confronting the media in the discharge of their duties.

Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) empathizes with the struggles of African journalists who are constantly on the frontline, showing courage and resilience despite the many challenges.

The year 2021 World Press Freedom Day with theme “Information as a Public Good” serves to reaffirm the need to acknowledge the significance of information for the development of any nation, as well as the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that the public has access to information for its general good.

The theme for this year is timely; we recall the many negative effects of misinformation that led to widespread myths in the wake of the pandemic, resulting in crisis and misunderstandings, leaving some African countries with the challenge of curtailing its threatening effect on the public.

For decades, the story of Press Freedom in Africa has remained an issue of concern. Incidences of violations and attacks on the press by government authorities and sometimes aggrieved members of the public have continued unabated.

Today, we remember every African journalist in the frontline who has faced attacks, threats, imprisonment, incarceration, loss, blackmail, or has left home to seek refuge or in the search for safety and to further practice journalism without fear.

With regrets, we remember every journalist and media person who has died in the line of duty, or because of their journalistic practice. We pledge to continue to speak against impunity and injustice against journalists. We further reaffirm our resolve to continue in the fight against press freedom until the press in Africa is free from attacks and violence.

We call on all government authorities to see the Media as partner in development, for only in this light can we truly achieve press freedom and public good.

Today, we call on journalists to synergize with all stakeholders for the peace and development of the African continent, we acknowledge the need for persistence in every venture, hence call for a relentless effort to ensure that press freedom is achieved.

We appreciate every organization both local and international who have also continued to condemn attacks, and supported journalists in the time of need. We commit to collaborate with the media and government agencies to bridge the gap and strengthen build a system that will not only promote press freedom but also access to quality information.

It is our prayer that democracy will not lose its essence, but rather promote collaboration among stakeholders and further drive our continent to the heights of development.

Use Freedom Of the Press Responsibly — Buhari Tasks The Media

President, Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhamadu Buhari has restated his commitment to freedom of the press, urging media professionals to wield freedom responsibly, and without licentiousness.

While celebrating the World Press Freedom Day with the media, the President notes that freedom of the press is an irreducible minimum in a democracy that would flourish, adding that freedom must, however, be used responsibly.

“That everything is permitted does not mean that there are no rules of correctness, particularly in a polity seriously challenged as ours now,” President Buhari says. “The media must be sensitive to what we are going through as a country, and anything that would exacerbate the situation, and further inflame passions and emotions, should be avoided.

“The media needs to ensure that while informing, educating, entertaining and setting agenda for public discourse, it does not encourage incendiary words and actions that could further hurt our unity in diversity.”

“Licentious freedom, the President says, is different from freedom with responsibility, and charges the Nigerian media to embrace the latter, rather than the former.

“On the part of government, President Buhari pledges greater cooperation with the media to discharge its duties, in line with the theme of this year’s World Press Freedom Day, ‘Information as a Public Good.’

“He charges those who manage information for government to do everything in public interest, while also encouraging the media to use the Freedom of Information Act available to make its jobs easier.

” The President submits that it is very vital to have access to reliable information in an era of misinformation, disinformation and hate speech, all to cause discord in society” the message concludes .

World Press Freedom Day is observed globally every May 3.

Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to call Governor Nasir Elrufai to order for the sacking of workers without following due process in Kaduna state.

The call is contained in the Workers’ Day address by the President of NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba and President TUC Comrade Quadri Olaleye, presented by the Kaduna NLC Chairman, Comrade Ayuba Suleiman at Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.

They warned that they  are mobilizing every Nigerian worker for the mother of all struggles in Kaduna state.

They also warned that the organized labour will not take Governor Ahmed El-Rufai’s current repression of workers lying low.

NLC and TUC described the mass sack and casualization of over 60℅ of the workforce in Kaduna state by Governor Nasir El- Rufai, as the most brutal attack ever on workers and trade union rights in the nation’s history.

The organized Labour also expressed sadness of the increase of school fees of Kaduna state University by almost 500% by the state government .

” you would recall that between 2016 and this year, the Kaduna state Governor, Mr Nasir El-Rufai sacked  21,770 primary school teachers, 7,310 local government employees, 3,000 personnel in the state civil service and 1,240 workers at the State Primary Health Care Board” NLC said.

According to organized labour,  while the disengaged workers still licking their wounds , the Governor went further to ” increase the School fees of Kaduna State university by almost 500%, this clearly shows a well mapped plan to make the children of the working class to destitutes, is this how Mr. El-Rufai understands development ” he quizzed

While  lamenting what they  described as  ” the serial pattern of anti-workers and anti-trade union war of attrition by the Kaduna State Governor, Mr Nasir El-Rufai is not lost on the Nigerian public adding that ” the industrial sadism of Mr El-Rufai has become legendary; it is even worst now”

They further said  the  actions of the Governor  ” are in breach of  section 20 Sub Section 1(a-c),2 and 3 of Nigeria’s Labour Act which demand consultation with workers representative organizations before redundancy letters are issued to Workers.

” we also condemn in the strongest term the violation of the terms of employment contract of the disengaged workers which provides for 60 years retirement age and 35 years of active service”.

” We consider the promise in the redundancy letters issued to the current victims of Mr El-Rufai’s reign of sadism as a mockery to the sacked workers ; talk of rubbing insult to injury” the union stressed

The organized Labour further said ” El-Rufai has refused to pay workers that he had earlier sacked between 2016 and 2020 their redundancy benefits adding ” Mr Nasir El-Rufai continues to prove himself as an agent provocateur and the precursor for the deteriorating security situation in Kaduna state “
