.. Challenges Sen.Dillon To Substantiate Claims Over Corruption Allegations

Raine Golegio

Citizens United to Protect Good Governance in Liberia has rubbished assassination plot claim attributed to Minister of State for Presidential Affairs Nathaniel F. McGill and calls on Senator Dillon to substantiate claims over corruption allegations.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday in Monrovia, CUPGG says its attention has been drawn to the persistent and baseless allegations made against the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs Nathanial Fallo McGill by Bacchus Menipakei Carr who is purporting to be a Civil Society actor.

They added that mountainous accusations on the Facebook Page and other News Outlets by Mr. Carr who claimed to be the Executive Director of the Concern Youth in Solidarity for the Promotion of Good Governance (CYSPGG) and a civil and human rights activist doesn’t only brought himself to public disrepute but the entire Liberian citizens who have known Minister McGill as a humble and a man with reputable Character whose integrity remains unmatchable in the governance process of the Country.

CUPGG further challenged Bacchus Menipakei Carr to go beyond such mere and unfounded allegations against the Minister McGill and provide sufficient facts to justify his claims in order to substantiate the falsehood against the Minister who is working tirelessly along with the President of Liberia in transforming the livelihoods of the ordinary masses.

The group Secretary Alexander H.M. Williams is of the strongest conviction that in the absence of providing the needed facts , the allegations are intended to blackmail and besmear the character of Minister McGill and dent the image of the Liberian government to the International Community and to also seek for political asylum at the detriment of this illustrious Minister and a blessing to the Liberian people and that Mr. Carr is being used by officials of the Opposition block to tarnish the reputations of the Minister of State Hon. McGill in Particular and the Weah-led government in general.

CUPGG Secretary Mr. Alexander H. M. Williams encourages Minister McGill not to take these grave allegations lightly but to institute legal action against Bacchus Menipakei Carr to serve as a deterrent to those who hide themselves under the constitution of Liberia to levied empty and malicious comments against prominent citizens without providing facts.

The Vice President of Liberia, Madam Jewel Howard-Taylor and several lawmakers up capitol hill took the first shot of the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday May 04, 2021 in Monrovia.

Speaking to Liberians following the administration of the vaccine, Madam Jewel Howard-Taylor encouraged Liberians to take the vaccine and confirmed to the public that she has previously suffered from the Coronavirus.

She added that though there is vaccine for the virus in the country, but citizens should ensure to exercise all measures in preventing themselves from the virus.

At the same time, House Speaker, Bhofal Chambers and several members of the Lower House of Representatives took on the challenge to participate in the  COVID-19 vaccination process.

The Representatives include: Joseph Papa Kolleh of Bong County, George Boley of Grand Gedeh County, Mike Jurry of Maryland County and Representative Albert B Hills of Bong among others.

It follows wide criticism over government official’s not being in to the vaccination process as Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf took her shot of the vaccine in recent time.

But it still remains unclear whether President George Weah is willing to take his shot of the vaccine as he hasn’t made an attempt to the process

Insecurity in Nigeria: Whither are we Bound?

0
President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria

By Andrew A. Erakhrumen, PhD

Today’s Nigeria is dangling dangerously from a precipice, considering the height insecurity has soared to in the country! However, most of those in and around government circle do not want anyone to talk about this obviously depressing reality for reasons damn unrelated to patriotism to Nigeria! Although, we had earlier deciphered this but certain desperate comments from those in government have reinforced this knowledge. Such is the recent outburst, as usual, from Mr. Garba Shehu who was not incorrectly quoted, to have lamentedon a live television programme – that “the way killings [of human beings] are being reported under the President Buhari-led administration is like it had never happened before”. It was also reported, in newspapers, that Mr. Garba Shehu explained that killings had been in existence since forever and President Buhari seems to be a target in the way it is now being reported. Can you beat this preposterousness? Those in government are getting more insensitive to the plight of those they claim to be ‘leading’. This kind of ludicrousness from government officials should not be misconstrued as being unique to any particular political party in Nigeria, as politicians, on all sides, are almost always the same, when in power. Yet, the group, now in power, displays the characteristics of a ‘current champion’ in ineptitude. Irrespective of their streams of invective, we will always remember the words of Edmund Burke (1723–1792) that “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

We will continue to contribute to the efforts at making Nigeria better since, according to Burke, “nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little. This is even if the government propagandists and their principals, lacking clues to Nigeria’s current challenges, call us the ‘wailing wailers’. If they do not know, we are telling them that they are like the mythical ostrich that hides its head in the sand ignoring and/or denying the existence of a problem hoping it will eventually go away on its own. We must say it as it currently is: Nigeria is in dire straits! Nigeria is boiling! Nigeria is in turmoil! Nigeria is at war! Nigeria is bleeding! Nigeria needs help! We summarise Nigeria’s current reality using extracts of a poem by William Butler Yeats (1865–1939): Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; …... What makes the situation in this country particularly unbelievable is the fact that the people in government today were the same ones promising El Dorado a few years ago. They used their propaganda machine to create an impression that their predecessors were clueless having no visible and feasible solution(s) to the challenges still being increasingly encountered today. We ask those currently in government, using our pidgin English: How market? After their propaganda and clearly woeful performance, the group in government, now, has convinced us, the more, that there is no difference between six and half-a-dozen. Simply, politicians, (in almost all the political parties), in our clime, are currently, painfully, the same!

Let us go back to where we started from, in this interaction, concerning the level of security or rather insecurity in Nigeria. It is no more news that the continuous security lapses in the country are baffling and alarming. The reality is that insecurity, in every part of the country, keeps worsening by the day with governments, at all levels, remaining permanently dazed. We must be sincere with ourselves; some of us are only being patriotic but not proud to be Nigerians, as at today, because the criminals (by whatever names they are known), causing insecurity in Nigeria, are being encouraged and emboldened by their successes’. These ‘successes’ are enabled by the seemingly incapability of government and its branches meant to arrest this kind of nuisance. It is as if the insurgency in the north-east is a done deal for the insurgents. Similarly, bandits and other criminals are overwhelming north-central and north-west of the country. Criminals have challenged the Nigerian State and are fearlessly in locomotion north-southward! For instance, criminals recently took over the KadunaAbuja highway that some people now only fly or board trains to travel from one of the locations to the other. Reports exist that these trains, sometimes with government functionaries on board, are escorted by security guards in helicopter! Kidnappings, for ransom, are gradually becoming part of our everyday life in this country. To worsen things, kidnappers now kill their captives at will. Human life is cheap in Nigeria so it does not mean much to the criminals.

In these criminals’ confident and seemingly uninhibited movement southwards, all the States along their route such as Benue, Kaduna, Niger and Plateau, just to mention a few, are now at their mercy. The governors of these States, with millions of Naira as security vote’ (whatever that means) in their kitty, are consistently baselessly lamenting and expressing exasperation concerning the level of insecurity in the various domains they are supposed to superintend over. As it is now – based on the warped 1999 Constitution (as amended) – these governors only superintend over States on paper in terms of controlling the security architecture! They are merely referred to as the Chief Security Officers of their States only on paper! In reality they are more like pawns, to Nigeria’s Federal Government, incapable of instructing their States’ Commissioners of Police. Most instructions, on security in all the States, must come and/or be approved from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. An example, among others, is the lamentations from Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello concerning this anomalous security arrangement, when he granted an interview at a camp for internally displaced people, in that State, where he confirmed that bandits and insurgents had taken over some towns in the State, hoisted their flags there and forcefully took people’s wives! This, according to the governor, happened in Niger State and not in Sambisa Forest! These locations within Niger State are about two hours, by road, to the FCT!

Hardly can one do a journey of twenty kilometres, by road, (many of which are dilapidated and still dilapidating), in any part of the country without one’s heart in one’s mouth for fear of the possibility of being attacked by criminals, major ones being kidnappers. It seems armed robbery has been upgraded to the flourishing business of kidnapping in Nigeria. This ‘business’ is blooming and criminal gangs are, on daily basis, getting more audacious. As this article was being written, news broke that Clifford Ordia – a Nigerian Senator – was separately attacked twice (same day) by suspected armed bandits along OkeneLokoja and LokojaAbaji roads, escaping death by the whiskers with three policemen in his security escort sustaining gun-shot wounds. If this can happen to a ‘big-man’ with a retinue of security escort, one can imagine the fate of the ‘common man’. In fact, those of us that still ply these roads are just being unfortunately unfortunate not to have affordable safer alternatives. As these criminalities were/are happening in the northern part of the country and progressively moving southwards, the eastern, south-southern and south-western geo-political zones of the country are experiencing their various security challenges. There are really no safe havens anymore in this country. It is noteworthy that the security challenges being experienced did not start today. They are well rooted in past mismanagement that correlates with bad governance that is still synonymous with the styles of the current inept governments.

We are wondering how the people in government sleep with all the insecurity challenges across the length and breadth of the country. Do they really love the country? Do they know that any government that cannot ensure the security of the citizens it superintends over has lost its legitimacy? Do they know that many indicators of a failing and/or failed State are already manifesting in this country? We asked these questions with all sense of responsibility and patriotism to Nigeria. The knee-jerk responses, by governments and their security agencies, to security lapses in Nigeria have not, and will not, provide the eagerly needed sustainable solutions. Certainly, there is a wide disconnection between governments and the governed. Thus, governments, particularly Federal Government of Nigeria, should connect with the citizens in all parts of the country to earn their trust. A situation where Nigerians refuse to give vital intelligent information to security outfits but easily hand such over to enemies of Nigeria should give a serious government a lot of food for thought. Those in government should stop pretending not to know that people are disenchanted with the way the country had been, and is still being, managed. The warped 1999 Nigerian constitution was not written by the people. The different nationalities – within Nigeria – are restive partly because they want to be equal stakeholders in the ‘Project Nigeria’. The youths, whose future has been stolen, want to express themselves. In summary, many Nigerians (within and without) feel alienated. Hence, we need sincere roundtable talks to find solution(s) to these insecurity challenges.

0

Ibrahima Yakubu

Following the dead line issued by Kaduna Greenfield students’ abductors demanding 100million naira and Ten motorcycles as ransom for the release of all the students, the PTA has waded in begging the abductors not to harm the victims , but extend the deadline.

In an interview with the National President , Parent Teachers Association Alhaji Haruna Danjuma Tuesday, said there was the need to beg the bandits in view of the situation some of the students found themselves since the day they were kidnapped and kept in the forestry .

Saying that, “there are high tensions and fears among all the families, relativies and other concerned citizens in the state since the moment they heard on a radio station of the threat by the bandit threatening to kill all the remaining students .

“we were shocked and not happy with that statement on the radio that all our remaining greenfield students would be killed by kaduna Bandit if 100 million naira and 10 motor cycles was not given to them today”

“we are simply begging them not to kill any other student in view of the fact that they are innocents”

“ The deadline is really worrisome and we as parents,we were all concerned and worried over the lives of our students and teachers of the green field university”

According to him, there is also the need for the abductors to extend the date-line they gave ,in order to enable some of the parents meet-up with their demands.

Since the kidnapped of chiboks girls, to Dapchi, zamfara,Niger, and kaduna, Many teachers and students are in panic and a critical situation, hence the need for the government to quickly bring an end to the kidnapping of school students and teachers

The Confederation of African Football has temporarily suspended the ban it imposed on the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville City near Liberia’s capital Monrovia.

On May 02, 2021 the Confederation of African Football Security and Safety Department banned stadiums in Mali, Senegal, Liberia, Central Africa, Namibia, Malawi, and Burkina Faso from hosting international matches.

The ban is a serious setback to those mentioned African countries ahead of the forthcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for Africa.

But in a letter to Liberia Football Association (LFA) secretary-general Isaac Montgomery on 3 May, CAF Deputy Secretary General for football and development, Anthony Baffoe said the SKD is not suspended until a further assessment is conducted by CAF.

Baffoe said the decision was reached following discussions with the Liberia Football Association.

He further added that upon conclusion of the said assessment and inspection, CAF will decide on the approval of the stadium.

The meeting which is scheduled for May 06, 2021 will be held at midday Cairo time (14:00GMT or 2:00PM Liberian time) via  videoconference/zoom with CAF and prominent LFA officials including Secretary General Isaac Montgomery, LFA club licensing manager Alex Nagbo and key SKD stadium authorities.

Kenyan President Torn Between Combating COVID-19 And an Ugly Succession Battle

0

By Joab Apollo

“We need a revolution now!” shouted a group of disenchanted motorists at the famous Thika road in Nairobi, Kenyan capital city, after the police erected a roadblock in strict enforcement of the 8 PM to 4 AM curfew, one of the measures Kenyan government has adopted to stem the tide of the ravaging COVID-19 virus.

They were joined in this call for a regime change by thousands who took to Twitter under the hashtag #RevolutionNow to vent their frustration at the manner in which President Uhuru Kenyatta led government has been handling the scourge. Key among their concerns being a lack of an elaborate plan by the state to cushion the masses from the economic effects of the deadly virus.

Thousands of Kenyans, especially in the private sector, have lost their jobs following curfews and partial lockdowns effected to contain the spread of the virus. They have also raised alarm over alleged corruption at the country’s Ministry of Health whose officials are under fire for diverting billions of COVID-19 donor funds to private accounts.

“This country should be sold so that everyone can be given their shares to do whatever they want to do with it. How can people be this heartless to the point of stealing money meant for treating COVID-19 patients?” poses Julius Kairu, who has turned his car into a grocery after losing his job as an accountant.

And while President Kenyatta continues to feel the heat of a citizenry breathing fire and brimstone over inefficacy in handling the virus, he is grappling with yet another challenge which has torn his government apart: the 2022 Kenyatta presidential succession.

His deputy, William Ruto, has broken ranks with him and formed a new party, United Democratic Alliance, which accuses Kenyatta of reneging on his pledge to rally behind Ruto in the 2022 presidential contest. Kenyatta, who had previously said he would hand over the mantle to Ruto upon his retirement, has recently shown signs of throwing his DP under the bus. His confidantes have openly called the DP a “thief” and went ahead to state that they will ensure that he doesn’t become the fifth President of the Republic of Kenya

Matters turned rocky for Ruto when President Kenyatta entered into a political deal with his bitter political rival Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement, a ceasfire known in Kenyan political parlance as the “handshake.” Ruto feel that by forging an alliance with Odinga, Kenyatta is elbowing him out of his succession race.

“Many Kenyans imprisoned in ethnic ghettos disguised as political parties and chaperoned by tribal kingpins are denied the opportunity to participate meaningfully in the political process that make critical decisions about their future.” He said on Sunday 2nd May, 2021, when he launched his  Bottom-top economic recovery plan, a departure from Kenyatta’s much-touted Big Four agenda whose key pillar is ravamping manufacturing as an economic growth anchor.

Supporters of the veteran Odinga, a former Prime Minister of the East African country, believe that this is the time for their man to ascend to the country’s highest political office. So much are they enthusiastic about the Odinga-Kenyatta bromance that they have christened it a “Mandela moment”, drawing parallels to the late former South Africa President Nelson Mandela who took the mantle of leadership in his seventies.

But they will have to contend with a growing list of presidential hopefuls seen to have the ear of Kenyatta, who include Gideon Moi, son to Kenya’s second president Daniel Moi, Uhuru’s political godfather.

Kenyatta has brushed off the succession debate, stating repeatedly that his focus is on service delivery, but Kenyans will hear non of that.

“Don’t believe anything Uhuru says, he is a proven liar. Kenyans beware.” Warned renowned human rights crusader and politician, Boniface Mwangi.
