Nigeria: Kaduna Establishes Imminent Flooding, Calls For Precautionary Measures

0

Following a  heavy downpour on Saturday, the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency has alerted the public of imminent flood hence the need for all hands to be on deck to avoid what it calls inconsequential loss of lives

The Executive Secretary of the Agency, Abubakar Hassan gave the warning in a statement issued after an assessment tour of some flood prone areas of   Kaduna metropolis

In the statement, The Executive Executive said, “Following the downpour of Yesterday 8th May 2021, the Executive Secretary called for an emergency meeting which was resolved to visit the flood prone areas within the State Metropolis. The State Technical Working Group otherwise known as Disaster Mitigation and Management Platform were the major stakeholders that took part in today’s exercise. Members were drawn from NEMA, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Ministry of Education, Media and representatives of the Civil Society as well as the pioneer sponsors of the just concluded project of Early warning for Early Response, ie the Christian Aid.

“Areas visited include: Kigo Road, Barnawa, Romi, Karatudu, Gonin Gora and Nassarawa Kakuri. Evidence of flooding has been established from the Assessment done. Factors militating against smooth flow of water from the water ways include indiscriminate dumping of refuse and debris along the waterways, uncleared vegetation and construction as a result of the Urban Renewal Project going on in the State.

“Open defication has been a major issue in all the areas visited. And this has a health implication to the communities such as Cholera, Diarrhoea, Malaria from Mosquitoes.

“The objective of the exercise is to establish facts and re-echoe awareness and sensitization to the members of the public and intimate them of the fact that taking ownership of their immediate environment by keeping it clean and safe is the responsibility of not only the Government alone but also theirs.

“The recent prediction is imminent of the fact that likelihood of flood is inevitable. Therefore all hands must be on deck to avoid inconsequential loss of lives and properties as well as negative impact on the environment.

“Farmers are also advised to heed to warnings and advice from expert on the right time to farm to avoid the impact on Food Security. The government has shown concern over the non-challant attitude of the public and pledged to decisively deal with defaulters particularly on indiscriminate disposal of refuse”, the statement concludes.

Gov. Wike To APC: Own Up Your Failure On Promises To Nigerians

0

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has called on true nationalists who believe in the indivisibility of Nigeria to rise and work together to rescue the country from disintegration.

The governor made the call when he hosted members of the South -South Zonal Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at Government House, Port Harcourt on Thursday.

Governor Wike said it is obvious that the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal government has not only lost capacity to solve the protracted insecurity problem plaguing the country, but do not have any iota of empathy for Nigerians and do not care whether they are dying.

“APC Governors have come out to say the present APC federal government will solve the security problems. But every day people are dying. When will they solve the problems?

“Own up and say to Nigerians ,we have failed on the promises that we made to you. And honourably say, as it is done in other advanced countries, that since we cannot perform and carry out the covenant we have with Nigerians, we have decided to quit.

“Every reasonable Nigerian, every nationalist who believes in this country should come up and make sure this country moves forward, if not it is going to affect everybody.”

Governor Wike noted that since Nigeria is not a place where honour and integrity guide the conduct of public officer holders, the APC federal government will not own up to their failings in handling of issues of insecurity.

He enjoined Nigerians to also brace up and do not resign fate to crying but resolve to use their PVC to vote out the APC at the appropriate time.

According to him, if Nigeria is a nation where honour and integrity are valued, the present APC led federal government which does not care even if dead bodies are littering on all the roads in the country , will honourably quit power.

The governor recalled watching Senator Smart Adeyemi recently crying on the floor of the National Assembly over the spate of insecurity in the country. He declared that instead of crying, the lawmaker and his colleagues should take the necessary action to arrest the situation.

Speaking further, Governor Wike said despite the peculiarity of the different people in the South-South, there is need for the people to see themselves as one and make it difficult for outsiders from the zone to infiltrate the region.

The governor, who congratulated the delegation for emerging as new executive members of PDP South-South Zone, said no other geopolitical zone in the country is dominated by a single party except the South-South.

“This is the only zone you have one party controlling the entire zone. So, it is a plus for us. This is because our people believe in us, and they believe in our party and that is why they have made sure that PDP wins every election that comes in the zone.

“I’m quite happy in what is happening in our zone in terms of development. Yes, things are not too good in Nigeria, but we have never relented. It is in tough situation you must make a difference.”

PDP National Vice Chairman (South-South), Chief Dan Orbih said they came to thank Governor Wike for hosting the last zonal congress of the party where they were elected.

He noted that under the APC led Federal government, that Nigerians are no longer safe. According to him, farmers in the South-South live in fear of marauding herdsmen.

“I must report to you that in the South-South most of our people cannot go to farms. If our people cannot access their farms, it is a clear signal of the impending food crisis we are going to face in this nation.

“Looking at the country today, different areas are advocating for a conference where we can sit down and address the problems we are facing. The Yorubas have formed the group called the Amotekun to protect their people. The Igbos has done the same. Today, I feel the South South should come together to take steps to protect our people.”

Orbih commended Governor Wike for the several measures he had taken to safeguard life and property of all residents in the state.

He declared that Governor Wike’s achievements will continue to serve as a benchmark for good governance in Nigeria.

Over 100 Countries Back TRIPS Waiver On COVID-19 Vaccines – Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa says a proposal by South Africa at the World Trade Organisation to waiver specific Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) obligations related to the manufacturing of COVID-19 vaccines is now supported by over 100 countries.

The President said this when he responded to oral questions in the National Assembly on Thursday.

“We want to manufacture vaccines locally against the pandemic. It is for this reason that South Africa and India proposed the TRIPS waiver at the World Trade Organisation to enable the manufacturing of COVID-19 vaccines in developing countries.

“The proposal is now supported by more than 100 countries. SA welcomes the statement by the United States that it will support the TRIPS waiver on intellectual property protection for COVID-19 vaccines,” he said.

This comes after the President, in his capacity at the Chairperson of the African Union (AU), made the call during a webinar on the Africa COVID-19 Vaccine Financing and Development Strategy, in a move that would enable countries in Africa and in other developing countries to access active pharmaceutical ingredients and benefit from technology transfer, including the know-how to manufacture vaccines in Africa at a cheaper cost.

Addressing MPs on Thursday, the President said the decision by the United States to throw its weight behind the proposal is a victory for South Africa.

“It goes to show the influence we have as a country, working together with others, that our voice and messages have weight because they are rational, progressive and are meant to benefit people on our continent,” he said.

Government finalises contracts with vaccine manufacturers

The President said, meanwhile, that government has finalised contracts with several vaccine manufacturers, which will be enough to vaccinate 41.5 million people.

This includes the finalisation of a contract with Johnson and Johnson to supply 31 million doses, another contract with Pfizer for the supply of 20 million vaccine doses, with an additional allocation from COVAX of nearly 1.4 million doses.

The first shipment of the Pfizer vaccine was revived earlier this week.

“It should be noted that the negotiations with manufacturers were protracted, as government had to ensure that the terms of the contracts were consistent with SA laws and not detrimental to national interests.

“We have now finalised contracts for sufficient doses to vaccinate 41.5 million people. The estimated times for the delivery of the vaccines depends on several factors, many of which are beyond our control.”

He said the contractual delivery schedule, as per the information shared by manufacturers, will see South Africa receiving three million Johnson & Johnson doses in quarter two of 2021, 4.5 million Pfizer doses through government’s contract with Pfizer, and a further 1.4 million Pfizer doses via the COVAX facility.

He said in the third quarter, South Africa is scheduled to receive 9.1 million Johnson & Johnson doses and another 8.5 million Pfizer doses, while the remaining 19.1 Johnson & Johnson doses and seven million Pfizer doses are scheduled to arrive in the fourth quarter.

“In total, we are scheduled to receive 31.2m J&J doses and 21.4 Pfizer doses,” the President said. – SAnews.

Nigeria Flood Forecasting, Management: NEMA Provides Automatic Weather Observatories to NIHSA

0

To enhance operations of the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has provided three automatic Weather Observation Stations in support to NIHSA.

Speaking in Abuja, at the unveiling of the 2021 annual flood outlook by the NHSA, NEMA’s Director General, AVM Muhammadu Muhammed (rtd) said the weather stations are at various stages of installations are located in Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti and Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State

According to AVM Muhammed, NEMA values “collaboration with our partners and are ready to strengthen the multi-agency approach to disaster risk reduction.”

He said the weather stations will be useful for hydrological predictions and also to train students in the field of Geography, Engineering, Agriculture, meteorology, climate change and other sciences.

Reviewing the flood of last year, he said “COVID-19 Pandemic reduced States and communities’ abilities to cope with climate induced disasters, thus imposing more burden on Federal Government Agencies to mitigate and respond to disasters.

“However, despite the gloomy nature of the pandemic, presenting a case of disaster within a disaster, our advocacy and engagement with stakeholders in 2020 led to reduction in the negative impacts of flood on the people.

“A total of 2,353,647 people were affected by 2020 flood disaster, but 69 lives were lost compared with the 158 lives but only 277,555 affected in 2019. “

Further according to him, “One of the lessons learnt during the 2020 flood after action review meeting is the need for proper utilization of our dams in the country. When dams meant for irrigation purposes are used for dry season agriculture, they acquire more capacities to hold more water in the rainy season. In addition, a timely controlled release of water from dams will reduce panic release of water during rainy season that can lead to further flooding”

As part of strategy for this year’s flood management, the NEMA DG said the Agency will ensure that all states and communities that are vulnerable to flood received timely warnings through community engagement, television programmes and information, education and communication materials amongst other public enlightenment activities that would be carried out.

The Minister of Water Resources Engr Suleiman Adamu who unveiled the AFO said the document was a clarion call to all stakeholders to rise and set up appropriate mechanism such as clearing the waterways and flood paths as well as maintaining proper water disposal management practices to curtail the ravages of the impending flood and threats of COVID-19.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Sport, Ibrahim Nyelenkeh, who had welcomed the delegation from the football world governing bodies, said that it was history in the making that the country was hosting the sitting presidents of FIFA and CAF for the first time.

“I am not surprised. You must have heard about government’s assiduous strides and relentless efforts at developing and supporting football from the grassroots to the national level,” he noted, adding that the present government had supported sport, particularly football, more than all others in the history of Sierra Leone.

While introducing the visitors, the President of Sierra Leone Football Association, SLFA, Isha Johansen, said that their visit was as timely and historic as it was meaningful to the country.

She thanked them for choosing Sierra Leone as one of their three Africa nation tours, the others being Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia.

FIFA’s President Infantino told the gathering that it was an honour and a pleasure to be in Sierra Leone, saying that they were very committed to helping and supporting Africa shine in the world.

“We know how important football is in Africa. Football is talent, football is passion in Africa. In Sierra Leone, in particular, football is not just a game, football is life. I think the time has come where we have to move forward and look into the future.

“FIFA and CAF stand for due process, for integrity, for democracy and to make sure that we can once again put aside all negativities that have tarnished the image of football in the country in the last few years. Let us move to promote a positive and united approach because we need unity in this country,” he urged.

The Swiss and Italian national, who has been president at FIFA since 26 February 2016, also called on all stakeholders to work together to make football very attractive and a way of life. He said everyone needed to work together for the development of the country, particularly in Sierra Leone where football was much more important.

CAF’s President Motsepe first thanked President Bio for his honesty, integrity and brotherly exchange of ideas, before calling on all to work together and with him in the best interest of football and a beautiful country.

He confessed that the President represented a new breed of leadership not just for Sierra Leone but for Africa, adding that the country had also produced exceptional football players and expressed hope that it would continue to produce great players. He pledged CAF and FIFA’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone with the requisite infrastructure to host the African Cup of Nations in the not-too-distant future.

In a brief statement, President Bio welcomed the Presidents of FIFA and CAF to his beautiful country, noting that football remained a fashion that the people of his country loved and cherished.

“It is one of the uniting forces in Sierra Leone. We are very polarised when it comes to politics, but when it comes to football you can see the passion, you can see the joy. It is a different Sierra Leone, especially with football,” he assured.

He also stated that normally when passion clashed, there were always bits of challenges, but emphasised that the country looked forward to an SLFA leadership that would move the country as a nation. He advised that the people should not be deprived of the game that every Sierra Leonean loved.

President Bio further stated that besides the politics of football and the few challenges with regard to infrastructure, the people of his country were friendly and good. He called on the leadership of the two world football governing bodies to invest in the infrastructure of the game in the country.

“On behalf of the government and people of Sierra Leone, I want to thank you and would like you to come again. Thank you for coming and you are welcome to Sierra Leone,” he concluded
