South African Post Office Poised to Improve Revenue Generation

36

With the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic downturn affecting the South African Post Office (SAPO) revenue, the entity has implemented long-term initiatives to diversify its income.

“These have started to show results, and the Post Office has also identified quick solutions that will improve its income in the short-term,” the Ministry of Communications and Digital Technologies said on Monday.

The Ministry, as the shareholder said it continues to work closely with the Post Office to strengthen the executive management of the entity.

Nomkhita Mona was recently appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the SAPO for a five-year term. The position had been vacant since 2019.

“The South African Post Office is a key stakeholder in delivering on government’s developmental objectives of improving access to basic services in previously underserviced communities. Its network is currently the largest point of presence nationally and is able to connect government, businesses and citizens anywhere in South Africa,” Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams said.

The Minister has welcomed the reopening of most of the SAPO branches across all provinces that were temporarily closed following extensive negotiations with landlords.

Twenty-seven branches have been reopened in all nine provinces.

“Negotiations continue with landlords of the remaining few Post Offices that are closed; they will re-open as soon as agreement is reached with property owners.  This is expected to be within the next few weeks,” the Ministry said.

COVID-19: Indian, Europe & North American Variants Detected in South Africa

0

In South Africa, four specimens from individuals who had travelled to India have tested positive for COVID-19 B.1.617.2 variant,

“Four of the specimens tested positive for B.1.617.2 (two cases from Gauteng and two from KwaZulu-Natal). The B.1.617.2 variant is currently highlighted as a variant of interest by the World Health Organization and is one of multiple variants circulating in India,” National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said in a statement.

It added that all cases have been isolated and managed according to COVID-19 case management guidelines. Contact tracing has also been performed in order to limit the spread of this variant.

Another variant that is currently dominating COVID-19 infections in Europe and North America, B.1.1.7 has also been detected in South Africa.

Eleven cases of B.1.1.7 have been confirmed, with eight cases in the Western Cape, two cases in Gauteng and one case in KwaZulu-Natal.

“It is not surprising that new variants have been detected in South Africa”, said NICD Acting Executive Director, Professor Adrian Puren.

Head of the Division of Public Health Surveillance and Response at the NICD, Dr Michelle Groome, assured the public that the institute is focusing its resources and research efforts towards understanding the variants and what the potential implications are for South Africa.

Groome added that provincial health authorities remain on high alert and are prioritising the sequencing of COVID-19 positive samples from travellers entering the country, from India specifically and their close contacts.

The institute said minimising the spread of the disease and possibly curtailing a resurgence through compliance with non-pharmaceutical interventions could not be emphasised enough.

“We understand that many are suffering from COVID-19 fatigue, and becoming lax in exercising preventative measures. But for the sake of yourselves and your loved ones, wash or sanitise your hands, wear your masks and maintain physical distance of 1.5 m from others. Remember to hold gatherings outdoors, or in well ventilated areas and roll up your sleeve once the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available to you,” said Puren.

South Africa’s Home Affairs Department, Undertakers Reach Agreement

Undertakers in South Africa

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has granted provisional designation for funeral parlours or undertakers to temporarily conduct business relating to Home Affairs registration of deaths.

This was made known in a circular issued to staff, provincial departments of health and metropolitan and district municipalities by the Home Affairs Department.

In an engagement with the leaders of the Unification Task Team in Pretoria last week, Home Affairs Director General, Tommy Makhode, undertook to consult the Department of Health and the SA Local Government Association to seek their inputs in revising the regulations and implementation of issues related to the management of human remains.

According to the department, all the parties have agreed to continue working together to find a lasting solution to these challenges.

“They have agreed that the Department of Home Affairs can issue a provisional designation for funeral undertakers to conduct their business for a period of 12 months, while the parties find a lasting solution,” the Department of Home Affairs said.

As part of this agreement, applications to be designated funeral undertakers are required to comply with the following:

  • Proof of storage lease agreement as certification of the business relationship for processing or keeping and cold storage of the deceased with a facility issued with the Certificate of Competence.
  • A Certificate of Competence of the person (lessor) leasing the premises or part thereof, taking into account that the lessor may only lease premises or part of the premises with a valid Certificate of Competence.

South African Post Office Reopens Temporarily Closed Branches

0

South African Post Office (SAPO) has announced reopening of most branches that were temporarily closed following extensive negotiations with landlords.

The branches re-opened Monday and will be trading normally.

“Customers are therefore welcome to visit these post offices for collecting parcels, paying car licences or doing other postal transactions,” SAPO said in a statement.

Vehicle owners who want to renew their car license have to bring an identity document and a completed renewal form, which can be downloaded from the Post Office website: https://www.postoffice.co.za/. The form is under the domestic products button.

“Post Offices are important access points for government services such as social grants. To eliminate long waiting times, the Post Office has introduced separate queues for different transactions. This also serves to eliminate crowding and ensures that COVID-19 regulations are adhered to,” SAPO said.

The Post Office offers the most cost-effective delivery service for small international parcels and therefore plans to play a growing role in delivering e-commerce parcels.

“Its network of outlets is one of the reasons it is able to offer a unique service, and the organisation intends to maintain its extensive network,” SAPO said.

The following branches will re-open:

  • Gauteng: Aston Manor; Belle Ombre, Pretoria; Fontainebleu; Hillbrow; Kelvin; Khumalo; Leondale; Moroke; Northmead and Three Rivers.
  • Eastern Cape: Greenfields; Motherwell; Northcrest and Schauderville.
  • Western Cape: Edgemead; Kleinmond; Mbekweni and Melkbosstrand.
  • KwaZulu-Natal: Esikhaleni; Gillits; Impendle; and Overport.
  • Limpopo: Enkelbult; Letsitele and Tonga.
  • Mpumalanga: West Acres, Mbombela.
  • Northern Cape: Hopetown.

The Post Office said negotiations will continue with landlords of the remaining few branches that are closed.

“They will re-open as soon as agreement is reached with property owners.  This is expected to be within the next few weeks,” SAPO said. –

President Ramaphosa Describes Vaccines a Global Public Good

0

If the international community is truly committed to human rights and the values of equality and non-discrimination, vaccines should be viewed as a global public good, says President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The President made the remarks in this week’s newsletter in which he argued that the World Trade Organisation (WTO) should consider South Africa and India’s proposal for a temporary waiver of certain aspects of Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). This, he said, would facilitate wider access to technologies needed to produce vaccines and medicines.

“The idea is to rapidly scale up local production to ensure wider access to affordable and effective vaccines,” wrote the President.

The waiver proposal currently enjoys the support of more than 100 countries. Last week, the US government announced its support for the proposal, which will give the current negotiations added momentum.

Public good against private profit

Previously, the President highlights in the letter, South Africa scored a victory in a lawsuit that pitted public good against private profit in the height of the HIV/Aids pandemic.

Then, the country sought to enforce a law allowing South Africa to import and manufacture affordable generic antiretroviral medication to treat people with HIV and save lives.

In response, representatives of the pharmaceutical industry sued the government, arguing that such a move violated the TRIPS. This is a comprehensive multilateral agreement on intellectual property.

The case, dubbed ‘Big Pharma vs Mandela’, drew widespread international attention. The lawsuit was dropped in 2001 after massive opposition by government and civil society.

He said the enforcement of intellectual property rights is critical to research and development and innovation in the quest for human progress.

“But our position as South Africa is that such a waiver is necessary at this time. It is temporary and is in direct response to an emergency. This is an unprecedented situation. It requires that all intellectual property, knowledge, technology and data related to COVID-19 health technologies be put at the disposal of all,” President Ramaphosa said.

They should be made available to all, not just to the highest bidders, he said.

“A situation in which the populations of advanced, rich countries are safely inoculated while millions in poorer countries die in the queue would be tantamount to vaccine apartheid. It will set a devastating precedent in our quest to realise a more egalitarian world and our ability to handle future pandemics.

“Social responsibility for health is a recognised principle in the Universal Declaration of Bioethics and Human Rights adopted by the international community in 2005. It affirms that progress in science and technology must contribute to justice, equity and the interests of broader humanity. It notes that the benefits of scientific research should be shared with society as a whole and within the international community, in particular with developing countries that face resource constraints,” said President Ramaphosa.

Vaccine equity

Earlier this year, the UN’s education, science and culture body UNESCO called for vaccine equity, noting that it was not just the right thing to do, but also the best way to control the pandemic, restore confidence and to reboot the global economy.

Currently, 55% of the existing vaccine manufacturing capacity is located in East Asia, 40% in Europe and North America, and less than 5% in Africa and South America.

“In the case of developing countries, much of this capacity is under-utilised,” he said.
South Africa is one of only five countries on the continent with vaccine production capacity.

Added the President: “Although we have secured enough vaccine doses to reach ‘population immunity’, there will continue to be a need for vaccines. We are therefore preparing to bolster global vaccine manufacturing for COVID-19 and other major diseases. Existing facilities need to be repurposed and new capacity built”.

In the letter, President Ramaphosa called on all South Africans to support this effort, and in particular civil society organisations that played a leading role during the HIV/Aids pandemic.

“Civil society has a critical role in mobilising international support for this cause, particularly through international cooperation with like-minded organisations in developed countries. This is an issue that calls for greater public advocacy and awareness-raising.

“As a nation, we must stand united in our effort to manufacture COVID-19 vaccines to save lives and proceed with the national recovery,” he said.

South Africa’s commitment to putting human lives first does not diminish its commitment to honour international trade agreements, he said, adding that the proposal was about the promotion of health as a public and social good.

“It is about affirming our commitment to the advancement of equality and human rights, not just in our own country but around the world,” he said.

Wrestling with God [Opinion]

0
Rev. Gabriel Agbo

 By Gabriel Agbo

I am a fan of the WWE – Smack Down Live and RAW. Before I used to find such combat sports very violent and irritating, but I later found out that there are certain qualities these wrestlers exhibit that we Christians and everybody that wants to be successful need. And they are; Staying focused and alert, self-confidence, hopeful, courageous, persistence, resistance and tactical. Like John Cena will always say, “Never Give Up!” And the current Universal Champion and my favourite, the Big Dog Roman Reigns tells you to, “Believe That!” And he proves it in the ring afterwards. His is one of the most courageous human beings that I know. These men and women truly hardly give up in a fight. Even with deep pains and blood sometimes, they still fight on. They always believe it will not be over until it is over. But I still find boxing and kick boxing too rough. I hardly look at them at all. But we are not going to discuss WWE or combat sports here. No. We want to talk about wrestling, struggling with God and it simply means: faithfully and tenaciously holding onto God’s promises and his words until you see them come to pass in your life or in your situation. It is holding onto God until you receive an answer to your request. It is also refusing to take no for an answer on what you know that is God’s will.  There are levels you can never attain in God until you learn how to ‘struggle’ with him.  This involves drawing God’s full attention to a particular situation or need, convincing him why he should do that, and hanging on him until he performs what you asked him to do. This is sure a very serious issue.  That is why almost every one that wrestled with God in the bible was on a matter of life and death or about destinies.  Wrestling with God demands for strength, courage, faith, time and patience, but when successful, the reward is always sweet, enduring, glorious and monumental.

Let us see few examples of the people who wrestled with God in the bible:

Abraham

Look at what happened between God and Abraham, when he was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham on hearing the impending divine judgment went into an immediate action to extricate his nephew and his family from the destruction.  He struggled, interceded and ‘wrestled’ with God to achieve this.  Let us read Genesis 18:22-33, “The two other men went on toward Sodom, but the Lord remained with Abraham for a while, Abraham approached him and said, ‘will you destroy both innocent and guilty alike?  Suppose you find fifty innocent people there within the city – will you still destroy it, and not spare it for their sake?  Surely you wouldn’t do such a thing, destroying the innocent with the guilty.  Why, you would be treating the innocent and the guilty exactly the same!  Surely you wouldn’t do that!  Should not the judge of all the earth do what is right?”

“And the Lord replied, ‘if I find fifty innocent people in Sodom, I will spare the entire city for their sake.’  Then Abraham spoke again.  ‘Since I have begun, let me go on and speak further to my Lord, even though I am but dust and ashes.  Suppose there are only forty-five, will you destroy the city for lack of five? Will you destroy the city for lack of five?’   And the Lord said, ‘I will not destroy it if I find forty-five.’  Then Abraham pressed his request further.  ‘Suppose there are only forty?’ And the Lord replied, ‘I will not destroy it if there are forty?’  ‘Please don’t be angry, my Lord,’ Abraham pleaded.  ‘Let me speak – suppose only thirty are found?’ And the Lord replied, ‘I will not destroy it if there are thirty.’ Then Abraham said ‘Since I have dared to speak to the Lord, let me continue – suppose there are only twenty?’ And the Lord said, ‘then I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.’ Finally, Abraham said, ‘Lord, please do not get angry; I will speak but once more, suppose only ten are found there?’ And the Lord said, ‘Then, for the sake of the ten, I will not destroy it.’ Then the Lord went on his way when he had finished his conversation with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his tent.”

Wow! A master intercessor indeed! This was a very complex targeted intercession. It was indeed a ‘wrestling match’.  It’s unfortunate that ten righteous persons could not be found in the whole of Sodom, otherwise, this great intercessor would have successfully saved the whole city. Can we find any righteous people around us today? May God help us! This should be a model for any would-be intercessor. You must be patient, persistent, humble, alert, focused and articulating.  Abraham persisted and struggled until he was able to save his nephew Lot and his family from that destruction.  That was a typical wrestling match with God.  Abraham did not give up until he achieved his objective. What is it that you want from God? What have you been believing him for? It is time to turn it into a spiritual wrestling match. Yes. You have to fight as if your whole life depends on it. And in most cases, it does. True. We are in a war. If you don’t win that battle you will become a victim or a casualty – your life, your career, your future, your family, your destiny, joy, prosperity may be taken away from you forever. You must get up now and fight. You must wake up and pray it out!  Call out those things you need that do not exist into existence. All things are possible! When you refuse to give up, God will not just bless you, but will also turn you into a blessing to humanity. Please, we will continue. Share this message with others.

Former Nigerian Military Leader, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has distanced himself from news linking him with a purported arrested helicopter supplying food to bandits in Niger State, north central Nigeria.

A statement by his spokesman, Yakubu Suleiman, urged Nigerians to “ignore such treacherous acts and to be careful with the kind of information they dish out and share on Social Media.

A section of Nigerian media had linked the former leader to an arrested helicopter involved in supplying food and weapons to bandits in his home state.

But in response, the former leader described the act as a “heinous crime that is unbecoming of any patriotic citizen.”

According to the statement, the former leader said “he would have ignored such spurious news, but has to [respond to] set the record straight.

“This kind of fake news has the potential of aggravating the already tense security situation in the country and should not be condoned.”

The statement lamented on how “individuals can be so callous to peddle such news and smear the image and character of people.”

He urged “Nigerians to continue to work and pray for enduring peace in Nigeria.”

….Corps Marshal Oyeyemi Felicitates With Muslims

Following the declaration of Thursday, 13th May, 2021 as the day of Eid el Fitr in Nigeria, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced massive Mobilisation of its personnel and operational equipment for the Sallah special patrol aimed at ensuring safer road environment, before, during the festive period and beyond.

Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem who disclosed this in a statement,  said not fewer than 35,000 of the FRSC Regular, Special Marshals, and Road Safety Club Members, about 750 Patrol Vehicles, 120 Ambulances, 25 Tow Truck and over 200 Bikes would be on the road during the special operation that would commence from 11 to 17 May, 2021

The Corps Public education Officer stated that the Corps is embarking on the special patrol operation to ensure that motorists and other road users have a hitch free celebration, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and security challenges in the country.

According to him, “the mission of the special operation is to ensure free flow of traffic, provide prompt rescue services and timely clearance of obstructions on all major roads and critical corridors across the country before, during and after the festive period as well as minimizing the occurrence of road traffic crashes on the nation’s highways through effective patrol operations and sustained public enlightenment campaigns”.

He added that, “FRSC has a tradition of always organising special patrols during festive periods as a way of averting the chaos that characterise the road during the celebrations, as such, this year’s Eid el Fitr would not be an exemption. Motorists must endeavour to avoid traffic violations and remain conscious of their safety to avoid not only arrest and prosecution by members of the Corps, but falling prey to avoidable road crashes”.

To ensure the effectiveness of the operations, Kazeem revealed that the Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi directed commanding officers operating across various formations nationwide to ensure that the 52 corridors are properly manned throughout the period of the operations.

He however appealed to motorists to obey all traffic rules and regulations and cooperate fully with the FRSC and other law enforcement agencies that would be deployed for traffic management duties, saying Mobile Courts would be in session across the country for prompt dispensation of justice to recalcitrant traffic violators.

The Corps Marshal, also directed that the operatives pay first-rate focus on Effective Traffic Control, Wrongful Overtaking, Use of Phone while Driving, Drivers Licence Violation, Lane Discipline, Removal of Rickety vehicles on the road, Driving with Expired/ worn out tyre and without spare tyre etc.

To achieve this fit, the Corps has deployed operational equipments in the categories of Radar Guns, Breathalysers to put a check on drunk driving, operational logistics materials are also to be fully deployed for this exercise. More so, the Corps Marshal has equally directed that all Zebras must be active 24/7 and be responsive to calls within the minimum FRSC response time to crashes reported.

Kazeem noted that, among the 52 corridors to be covered are: Akwanga-Lafiya-Makurdi, Jos-Bauchi-Gombe, Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Birnin Kebbi corridor, Katsina-Kano-Wudil-Dutse-Azare-Potiskum corridor, Kaduna-Saminaka-Jos corridor, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor, Okene-Ogori-Isua-Owo corridor, Makurdi-Otukpo-Obollo Afor-9th Mile corridor, Asaba-Abraka-Ughelli-Warri corridor, Ibadan-Ogere-Sagamu corridor, Sagamu-Mowe-Lagos corridor, amongst others.

Special focus will be on checking the following offences; Dangerous driving/overtaking, overloading violation, Use of phone while driving, Excessive speed, Lane indiscipline/Route violation, Passengers’ manifest violation, illegal use of SPY number plate, Latching violation among others.

In line with the foregoing, the patrol is to run in shifts as follows 0600hrs – 1400hrs, 1400HRS – 2000hrs, 2000hrs – 2200hrs, and Night Rescue teams to be on standby at all operational Commands. The Corps will go into the exercise with the friendly collaboration with Military Units en-route or resident, The Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Department of State Security, State owned/NGO’s Ambulance service providers, National Network on Emergency Rescue Services (NNERS) and Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA).

The Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi who felicitated with the Muslim faithfuls reechoed his earlier call on them to manifest love, care and continuous obedience to established laws so as to portray the lessons learnt during the ramadan in positive light. Expectedly, Oyeyemi assured all Nigerians of full deployment of personnel on the highways and crash emergency rescue services for prompt rescue and evacuation of crash victims in case of any mishap.

While urging them to show special consideration and attention to other road users so as to create a safer atmosphere for all during the celebration; the Corps Marshal further called on Nigerians to cooperate with law enforcement agents and ensure maximum compliance with  all directives on restrictions and physical distancing.

He also stated that the National Traffic Radio 107.1 FM will continue to operate 24/7 to give real time traffic update. As such, he called on all travellers to take advantage of the Station and the FRSC Toll Free numbers 122 to report any obstruction, crash or gridlock witnessed on the road for prompt intervention of the nearest Command.
