KENYA: Same Old KCSE Results, No Quality Improvement

By Joab Apollo

On Monday 11th May, 2021, Kenya’s Education Cabinet Secretary, Professor George Magoha announced the results of the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, an annual exercise that determines students’ admission to Universities and colleges.

However, the results did not live up to its billing as the same inequalities that have seen schools dominated by middle class children hogged the limelight amidst claims of the re-emergence of exam cheating.

While relatives and friends of students who posted good results took to social media to express their excitement, a debate was simultaneously raging on the quality of education Kenyans are receiving in their schools.  With the runaway employment getting out of hand in the East African country, Kenyans blame national exams for deteriorating standards of education in the country.

“What we have now is an ugly situation where everyone pulls all the stops to pass exams, either through cheating or bribing people to sit exams for them,” Kibe Gicheru, a resident of Kayole, Eastern part of Nairobi told this writer, as he and a host of other residents gathered at a restaurant to discuss the results.

“Yet the Ministry of Education still insists it’s up to some good. Nothing has changed. The poor get shortchanged systemically by a people not willing to change.” interrupted his friend who introduced himself as James.

Over the last few years, Kenya’s Education Ministry has moved to thwart rampant exam cheating by introducing stringent rules during examination, which include arrests of those found Hawking exam papers and cancelation of results of schools caught cheating.

However, the measures seemed not to have yielded any fruits as the education Cabinet Secretary himself recently admitted during the examination period that some schools were hiring experts to sit for exams for their students. Cases of crooks selling exam papers also resurfaced.

This has led to Kenyans calling for a ban of national exams.

According to educationist Wandia Njoya of Daystar University, Kenyan exams system “cheats passers that the passers are intelligent and hardworking, and everybody else is not.”

Kericho Senator, Aaron Cheruiyot, opined on Twitter thus: “At what point do we tell the A students that there is a very high likelihood that 10 or 15 years time, they will be working for their classmates who scored C?”

Over the past years, the country has witnessed numerous As in national examination, which continues to be questioned given the country’s dismal performance in research and technology. Many graduates are jobless while some have been branded half-baked by international organizations like the World Bank.

Open Letter to Gov. Nyesom Wike: The Need for Reflection and Action

Dear Excellency, this curfew extension is only a cosmetic arrangement. We are no longer in a Lockdown. It is time to show the investments in security. Let us see if what you were part of during Amaechi’s Invasion of the Okochiri Forest (a smaller version of the Sambisa Forest) can still happen.

These unknown Gunmen would have been tracked down before any attack if you had not disbanded the C4i put in place by your predecessor. All the gains of the past in the area of security have been lost under your Government. What about the armored Helicopters purchased by the Government you served as Chief of Staff which you erroneously helped to seize while you served as Minister under President Goodluck Jonathan?

Eheehh! What about the abandoned security boats acquired by the Rivers State Government before your time, meant for the patrol of the high seas to reduce attacks by sea pirates?

I know that the Office of the Governor is entitled to over Two billion naira each month under Security vote. Yes, nobody should question you on the judicious use of the now accumulated sums. Legally, you may choose not to deploy it for the fight against insecurity but morally, it is expedient that you invest in internal and external protection of Rivers people who gave you their mandate wilfully or forcefully.

My dear friend and exalted one, you know that it is wrong to put the blame on the visitors from Oyigbo. You know why? The monster had long been birthed and fed. It is only beginning to fester in its chosen environment. The larger population of traders dispossessed of their shops at Ikokwu Spare parts Market have found a thriving trade now, albeit to express their bottled up anger for being used at the elections and dumped.

There are different reasons why different persons are falling back on IPOB and this may just be one.

Now, we are being faced with the threat of growing terrorism and war. It is not a time to apportion blames but to seek the solution to this endemic situation which we have all knowingly or unknowingly allowed to fester.

I urge you to go beyond the primordial, instinctive arrangement of the imposition of curfews to a full-scale plan in order to avert the impending doom.

It is not in threats rather, it is in action.

Rivers State has done it before, so it can do it again!

Be the model for the others to follow in tackling insecurity just as you do in tackling the opposition parties.

Nigeria: When Chaos Becomes the Springboard for the Change We Need

138

By Obiaruko Ndukwe

The world was suddenly jolted by the spread of an unknown virus later coded the Coronavirus. It was a moment of despair, confusion and a total shift in lifestyle.

Social distancing, nose masking and hand washing became the new normal.

Everything became virtual as Lockdown was enforced.

It was a period of total chaos as the deadly yet invisible virus spread very fast. It moved from invisibility to invincibility as scientists in the organized world headed for the kill.

While the time ticked and lives were lost each second, waiting for the answer became a common ground in prayer for all sects. And for once, both the religious people and the atheists came into alignment that there was a cosmic force ready to annihilate mankind.

But the crowned virus was not the Almighty, so it had no such powers to effect a total extinction of the entire human race but it sure recreated the lifestyles of man.

The chaotic situation brought about a “new normal” and ushered in the change we never yearned earnestly for.

Though the casualty was huge and is probably still raging, albeit in lesser numbers now, the ultimate result is that life still can go on in a totally different way and the past may never return.

It’s an indescribable moment of change!

Nigeria has been through the Civil War, recording millions of casualties and setbacks, with widening distrust and disunity amongst the ethnic groups that make up it’s structure.

Fifty one years after the war, the issues that led to the war have been multiplied beyond description. Obviously, the war was never a means to an end of injustice, marginalization and inequity. It was simply a tool for further division under a thinly held fabric waiting to break.

Fifty two years after, the drums of War are beating again. Those who ought to secure the people are now being severed by provocateurs labeled unknown Gunmen, bandits, secessionists, dangerous herdsmen and Boko Haram.

The Police have been marked for elimination and the war rages even though there are no clear rival groups. It is Anarchy and the authorities are overwhelmed.

The End SARS protest was the test run of the weakening of the Police Force and it worked.

This chaos may actually not be the end of a corporate Nigeria but it will set the tone for the change we may not have asked for, but the one we definitely need!

Whatever let the change come for we earnestly yearn for a better Nigeria.

Nigeria: Sokoto Planned Varsity of Education To Promote Entrepreneurship— Tambuwal

0

Gov. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State has reiterated that his administration’s plan for the proposed upgrade of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto to a full-fledged university is to encourage students to be able to stand on their own after the completion of their studies.

Gov. Tambuwal stated this on Monday when he received an interim report of a committee set up by the state government for the purpose of enhancing the capacity of the present College of Education to that of a university.

According to him, considering that the proposed university is envisaged to be one of the most important institutions in Nigeria, the emphasis on its promoting not only education, but education with employeability cannot be over-emphasized.

He said the focus on entrepreneurship development is deliberate in the face of dearth of white collar jobs for graduates. “So,” he reasoned, “students should be able upon graduation from the university not only to educate others but also employ themselves and others in a gainful enterprise run by them.”

He assured the committee that the executive arm of government wil look at its recommendations and make sure that they are judiciously implemented.

Expressing appreciation to the committee for doing a thorough job and the fact that the existing institution has met most of the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) requirements to be a university, Gov. Tambuwal said his administration will do whatever needs to be done and immediately apply to the NUC for the upgrade.

In his remarks, the chairman of the committee, Prof. Zayyanu Umar said the 19 member committee which swung into action after its inauguration on January 21, 2021 conducted its assignment with modesty, high sense of responsibility, integrity and commitment to the course of the education sector in the state.

He explained the methodology of the committee as including meetings, engagement of stakeholders and visits to the NUC as well as Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, Ogun state, the first university of education in the country.

He said all these provided the committee with an insight on the need for graduates of the planned varsity to acquire skills that would make them self employed after their graduation.

For this purpose, he explained the committee has recommended some courses not currently offered in either Usmanu Danfodiyo University or Sokoto State University to be taught in the proposed university in order to enable the state government build capacity of the youths and mitigate the problem of unemployment in the country.

According to him, with the facilities currently available at the College targeted for upgrade, SSCOE, staffing profile and NUC-standard compliance, academic activities should commence in the 2021/2022 academic session.

Nigeria 2023: Vie For Presidency, Group Tells Bauchi Gov. Bala Mohammed

0
Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State

A socio political group, ‘Senator Bala Mohammed Support Group’ has called on Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state to Contest for the Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, come 2023.

The National Coordinator of the group, Dr. Engr. Richard J. Agene who made the call Sunday while addressing a press conference in Bauchi said that the call was meant to have a true leader that will salvage Nigerian state from its current state of insecurity.

“we have embarked on a nation-wide consultation with critical stakeholders across the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, as well as 774 local government areas across our country for this very important gathering”, he said.

According to the group, it was no longer news that Nigeria is in dire need of leadership; “our security architecture have collapsed, the economy is in shambles, government institutions have become helpless, poverty has taken over the land”.

The group added that killings, kidnapping, banditry, maiming, arm-robbery, insurgency, sexual abuse, corruption among other vices have almost become the country’s new national anthem.

The group further said: “our nation, the once pride of Africa has been brought to her knees”.

The Coordinator of the group noted that Nigeria is in dire need of a strong, visionary and purposeful leader, who has the capability, will power and zeal to lead the citizens on the right path and correct the abnormalities.

Dr. Agene said as Nigerians and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the group is aligned with the efforts of the party as the rallying point of all men and women of goodwill to rescue the country from the stranglehold of the incompetent, divisive and overtly corrupt All Progressives Congress (APC), come 2023.

The group said it was convinced after thorough and extensive consultation with stakeholders across the six geo-political zones of the country, that the Bauchi state Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed is the most credible, competent and reliable leader for the presidential seat.

“It is in this regard that this group is calling on the Governor of Bauchi state, Sen. Bala Mohammed, to please answer our call to lead in the task of salvaging the country from total collapse, by making himself available to CONTEST for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigerian come 2023”, the group said.

The group said Senator Bala possess the much-sought credentials for the purpose as a visionary leader who can unite Nigeria and redirect her national energies for productivity, wealth creation and political stability.

They noted that Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state who served creditably well as Minister of Federal Capital Territory from 2010 to 2015 where he led many reforms and laid solid foundation for the stability and massive development of the federal capital will equally perform very well if given the mandate as president.

Dr. Agene said Bala Mohammed as a deligent public servant who served in various capacities before venturing into politics has made an indelible marks in Bauchi as a Governor within two years of his administration by embarking developmental projects across the state.

“Moreover, considering the zoning principles of our beloved party, and the inclination by party stakeholders to zone the presidency to the North East or South East in the interest of equity, justice and fair-play our country, we are pleased tom report that consultations so far made indicate a preference for Senator Bala Mohammed, who is from the Northeast”, the group said
