2023 Elections: Why Nigeria’ll Be On Global Spotlight — British High Commissioner

0

The British government says the world’s spotlight will be on Nigeria during the 2023 general elections and concerted efforts must be made to improve the country’s democracy.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing disclosed this after a closed door meeting with the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

“The importance of these elections, how crucial they are, not just for Nigeria’s democratic journey, but for Africa and the world. The world’s spotlight will be on Nigeria in 2023. It needs to be a better election, not perfect but better to consolidate and improve Nigeria’s democracy, and I think the Governor very much agree with me on that.”

The British High Commissioner , who disclosed she had a very fruitful discussion with Governor Wike, said their discussion revolved around the economy, prospects of his vision including youth employment, challenges he is facing and his plans to tackle them.

Speaking on the issue of security, the High Commissioner said Britain is helping the Nigeria military to build its combat capacity in tackling insurgency, including Boko Haram in the northern part of Nigeria.

According to her, the British military has had its presence in Nigeria for several years and has continued to offer training on how to counter insurgency in the northern part of Nigeria.

“In the North in particular, we are sharing our experiences in counter insurgency from Northern Ireland, from Iraq and from Afghanistan. We have a military presence here. It has been here for many years training your military in counter insurgency and also sharing our experiences.

“That this kind of challenges are not solved by the military means alone, ultimately it’s about rebuilding trust with the people of this country and having a good offer as well as tackling the underline economic drive, unemployment.”

Laing said the British government is offering economic assistance to Nigeria because of the realisation that lack of economic opportunities in the north has made youths in that region to become easy recruits of Boko Haram.

“Unemployment, many young men out of work are very easy target for Boko Haram. So we are sharing our experience and in a practical sense helping on the security side and offering economic support to the country to enable that there will be more jobs for the people.”

El-rufai and the Planned Mass Sackof Civil Servants: An Appeal for Caution

0
Gov. Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna State, Nigeria (Credit: Thisday)

By Yusuf Shehu Usman

El Rufai is trying to test the efficacy of text book economic theory by proposing to lay off workers from the civil service on account of lack of productivity or funds to pay their salaries

One thing Mallam should know is that the civil service does not and can’t operate on the same principles of profiteering as the private sector.

In classical economic theories you will be right to argue on concepts like value for money, productivity and results from investment
However, the civil service is not strictly and originally based on such principles

It is seen largely as the benefits those who suffered themselves to go to school should deriv
e from the system to the resources of which, they are co-owners.

It is also a fact that employment into the civil service is viewed as a way of reducing general unemployment and social tension in the society

Therefore El Rufai should know that laying off such a huge number of civil servants, will not come without it’s consequences
It will create tension, restiveness and more importantly, accentuate the rate of crime in the society and his Government would need much more than what it may save from sacking the civil servants, to contain the social unrest and societal dislocation
El Rufai should further know that it is not that successive leaders from independence till date are daft or unaware of economic theories when they didn’t tinker with the public service by way of mass retrenchment of workers. Some of them are better economists than el Rufai

They knew very well that providing civil service jobs is a social economic imperative and a panacea to tension and social malaise in the society

It would be recalled that a previous attempt in recent past to try a similar policy in the federal civil service by even a well designed template to down size, right size, restructure, retrench ( chose any of the terms you like) ended in an unmitigated disaster, the effect of which the service and the social order in the society, are yet to recover from

We should always learn from history or we will be condemned to repeat historical disasters
Leadership is not only about being urbane or flamboyant with ideas. It is more about care and compassion for the people being led
El Rufai should reconsider his intended policy of mass disengagement of civil servants

Instead, he should show his managerial ingenuity and knowledge of economics by instituting reforms that should make the civil service more productive and result oriented within the structural framework it is predicated

The Mallam should know that he is not the most intelligent governor in Nigeria nor is he the most pragmatic

The other governors too are feeling the pinch but they are enduring the heavy load of wage bill of the civil service not because they don’t know that they could lighten the burden through mass retrenchment, but more importantly because they are aware that on the balance, it would pay more to provide the people some form of social security through employment in the civil service with all its trappings of inefficiency and unproductivity

It should be seen as a part of the social safety net or palliatives for the people while the leaders engage in their huge looting and plundering of our common patrimony and we are not down sizing or retrenching them

Nigeria: Sen Kabiru Marafa sponsored Killings In Zamfara –Says Col, Rabiu Garba

0

A retired Nigerian Army officer and one time Security Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State, Lt-Col. Rabiu Garba has alleged that Senator Kabiru Marafa sponsored the killing of three people in ‘Yandoton Daji during the 2019 General elections

The murdered victims, according to Lt-Col. Garba in a statement, were Alhaji Yusuf AG Yandoto, Mallam Bala Yakubu and Mallam Abdullahi Halliru.

He alleged that Sen. Kabiru Marafa hatched the plans and provided the assailants of the dastardly acts with guns with which they murdered the victims.

The retired Army officer therefore pleaded on President Buhari.and Governor Bello Matawalle to prevail on the matter so that justice is served against the perpetrators and their sponsor.

According to him, petitions and a law suit are already in court against Marafa, but observed that the process is facing delay and the deceaseds’ families are beginning to loose hope.

POST-COVID-19 PANDEMIC, NIGERIA AND FRANCE MUST SEIZE THE CHANCE TO STRENGTHEN MILITARY AND ECONOMIC TIES

90
President Muhammadu Buhari

By Muhammadu Buhari, President, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Today, leaders from across Africa meet in Paris to discuss plans to recover from the impact of a common enemy – COVID-19. But for African nations from across the Sahel region and beyond, the issues are inseparable from the fight against another common enemy which is terrorism. And like the war against the Coronavirus, it is one we are fully united with France in our strong determination to overcome.

Across the world, conflict and Coronavirus have not been far apart. As governments have struggled to contain COVID, jihadists have taken advantage in the Sahel – the vast arid stretch of territory that lies between the Sahara and Sub-Saharan Africa. Terrorist incidents have become tragically common across Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. Around the Lake Chad Basin, Boko Haram terrorism have taken advantage of the pandemic and pushed back into my country Nigeria, whilst still launching raids and attacks in Chad, Cameroon, and Niger.

We have seen more than once how Boko Haram – which in French means “l’éducation occidentale est un péché” – can regroup, morphing in form and tactics. A matter of only a few years ago, they were reduced to a territory-less group, where once they had controlled an area in Nigeria three times the size of Lebanon. It has demonstrated why pushing against one front can prove futile if groups can simply migrate to ponds of insecurity across porous borders. Yet as instability has spread, so the networks that sustain it have strengthened – whether that be weapons supply chains from Libya, ideological imports of Al-Qaeda and ISIS from the Middle East, or trafficking networks that take money from those escaping instability and feeds it back into the system that generates it.

Meanwhile the infection is spreading further afield and reaching into the heart of Europe and France is not being spared the malignant, with innocents murdered on its streets. In that context, our fate is linked. Hence Paris has been active in this common fight. The French Operation Barkhane has provided critical boots on the ground in shoring up security across our region. Though challenges remain, it has ensured a wide expanse of territory has not descended into lawless playground where terrorists masquerading as fighting for Islam groups can freely flourish and multiply. That assistance has been profoundly appreciated in the region.

Now Nigeria and France should deepen our anti-terror cooperations if we are to overcome this scourge – particularly in the aftermath of the murder of the late President of Chad. Where for historical ties, support came to Nigeria from the UK, and to the G5 from France, the terrorists do not recognise these border-aligned distinctions. We must be agile and flexible, cooperating cross our borders to cut the head off their groups.

Indeed, we have already done much to strengthen our bond. Intelligence sharing is well developed, along with training against improvised explosives. But there is more we can do in cross-border military exercises and coordinating strategy. At the same time, we know France has borne much of the strain for combating terrorism of the region, and we – the leaders of Sahel countries – must also do more to present a unified front to lobby other Western nations, particularly Great Britain and the United States and the European Union for further military and humanitarian assistance.

However, we know that military gains do not provide the whole solution. Without security, economic opportunity remains fragile. Without economic opportunity, the propensity for conflict grows. The solution must therefore be two pronged. If we do improve those conditions, it leaves our people vulnerable to indoctrination, as one is vulnerable to COVID-19 without a vaccine.

In the Sahel, crises converge. Traditionally, this vast arid land has been poorer than its Mediterranean neighbours to the north and fertile land to its South. Now, climate change and environmental degradation squeeze the region of water sources, draining opportunity and increasing competition amongst various groups for scarce resources. The fallout from Libya has flushed the whole region with weapons, making any disputes and competition far more destructive. And it is upon these conditions, the lies and propaganda of terrorists who falsely claim to be Islamists promising salvation can find an audience. Islam is a religion of peace.

To counteract these, we must focus on initiatives that sustainably spread opportunity far and wide across the Sahel. Transport links across the Sahel have become dilapidated, much of it still the remnants of the colonial era. For the region’s burgeoning young population, reinvigorating these links or building anew is critical. It allows for efficient allocation of labour; the movement of inputs such as seed, fertiliser or equipment to the areas that need it; and freight to take produce or extractives to market or value-add factories.

Now, as the world emerges from the pandemic, we have the chance to build back better. Though we always knew it, COVID-19 underlined how interconnected and interdependent the world is. With that shattering reminder, we can create a world with that idea at its forefront – one that provides security and opportunity for both of us.

Nigeria South-East Security;  IGP Flags-Off Operation Restore Peace In Enugu

0

Says Special Operation Would Return Region to its Historical Peaceful Path

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has flagged-off a new special operational action plan code-named “OPERATION RP” for the stabilization of security order in the South-East Geopolitical Zone of the country.

The IGP launched the special operation, Tuesday 18th May, 2021 at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu as part of efforts targeted at returning the South-Eastern region to its historical pride of place where its people are known to be peaceful, tolerant, innovative, industrious and entrepreneurial.

The IGP noted that the special operation has become necessary to engender all-inclusive security actions to roll-back the murderous attacks, violence, proliferation of weapons and other threats to law and order occasioned by the separatist agenda being heightened by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the South-East region.

The IGP observed that activities of the group in the region have assumed an armed dimension in which important political and community leaders as well as personnel and assets of the Nigeria Police, Military and other security agencies, critical national infrastructure are being constantly targeted in clearly well-coordinated, premeditated manners.

This is in addition to deepening inter-ethnic prejudice and intolerance, unjustifiable inter-ethnic violence and counter-violence, loss of lives and massive destruction of properties.

The IGP, while appreciating the individual and collective efforts of all the South-East Governors and other critical stakeholders in the region towards supporting the Police in restoring security and strengthening national unity, assured the nation, that in the coming days the special operation will be extended to other parts of the South-East region to confront criminal elements, take the battle to their doorsteps and re-order our cherished national values in the region.

The IGP further noted that the “Operation RP” will be replicated in other parts of the country, to address peculiar crimes including banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, amongst others.

The ‘Operation’ will be carried out by operatives of the Force in collaboration with the Armed Forces, the intelligence community and other sister security agencies.

The personnel deployed have been charged to be civil with the law-abiding citizens, but firm and ruthless with criminal elements operating under any guise whatsoever who may attempt to test the collective will of the people.

In his remarks, the host Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, commended the IGP for initiating the special operation. He described the operation as timely, and believes it will help in rejigging and re-tooling the security architecture of the South-East. Other dignitaries at the event are; the Deputy Governors of Abia, Ebonyi and Imo States, traditional rulers, religious leaders, amongst others.

Meanwhile, the IGP has thanked the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces for approving the special operation and providing the support needed to fully achieve the objects of the special operation. He solicits the full support of the civil populace, particularly, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth associations, market bodies, cultural associations and professionals etc, expressing his belief that with the support of all strategic stakeholders, the operation will in due course, change the current security narratives in the South-Eastern region for good.

FACT CHECK: Verifying Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s Claims While Inaugurating Commission of Inquiry on Billiri Violence

0
Gov Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state, Nigeria

A civil unrest engulfed Billiri, the headquarters of Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State, northeast Nigeria, on 19th February, 2021 leading to destruction of properties and loss of lives. The violence followed a peaceful protest in connection with selection and non-announcement of the 16th Mai Tangle.

On Monday, 19th April 2021, Governor Yahaya set up a Commission of Inquiry with the following terms of reference;

  1. to find out the remote and immediate causes of the violent protests;
  2. to identify person or group of persons who sponsored, procured, instigated, or encouraged the violent protests and to recommend sanctions or remedial measures against such person or group of persons;
  3. to receive and investigate complaints from victims or the families of victims and members of the public over the violent protests;
  4. to make appropriate recommendations to Government on measures and means of preventing the future occurrence of violent protests and how to make perpetrators account for their acts; and
  5. to make such other or further recommendations as the Commission may deem fit within the ambit of the Law.

In his speech, while inaugurating the commission, Governor Inuwa Yahaya (full speech HERE) made a number of claims in relation to the crisis, which AFRICA PRIME NEWS sought to verify.

First Claim: The protest was organised by some unpatriotic elements

All media Publications on the protest seen by AFRICA PRIME NEWS showed that the peaceful protest was organised by Tangale women, who were showing their grievances over delay by the governor to announce winner of the ‘Mai Tangle’ election.

The women were acting on rumours that the governor was going to appoint Mallam Danladi Maishanu, who got 2 votes, as against the winner, Dr. Musa Idris Maiyamba, who got 5 votes.

Nigerian media reports by Punch newspapers, Tribune Online and Forefront, clearly reveal that the peaceful protests were carried out by Tangale women.

The Tangale Community Development Association (TCDA) and Tangale Community Overseas (TCO) also in their various statements on the protest affirmed that the peaceful protest was carried out by Tangale women.

VERDICT: FALSE, The protest was organised by Tangale women, not unknown ‘unpatriotic elements.’

Second Claim: There was a hashtag codenamed #LockDownBilliri, created for the protest

AFRICA PRIME NEWS went through available pictures of the protest on social and mainstream media, but did not see any harshtag #LockDownBilliri on any of the placards.

We also searched Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, and all we got was No results for “#LockDownBilliri”. When we searched Google, all the results pointed to the speech of the governor while inaugurating the Commission of Inquiry.

VERDICT: FALSE, The hashtag #LockDownBilliri was created and coined by Governor Inuwa Yahaya, not protesters.

Third Claim: Gombe – Yola highway was blocked by protesters

Media reports (Vanguard, Forefront), and social media pictures of the protest evidently show that the Gombe Yola major highway was blocked by protesters.

VERDICT: TRUE, Gombe – Yola highway was blocked during the protest, as claimed by the Governor.

Fourth Claim: Some unscrupulous and criminal elements hijacked the protest and turned it to a violent one

Investigations by AFRICA PRIME NEWS showed that Tangale women protested peacefully for two straight days (Wednesday and Thursday) without violence. But on Friday, the protest turned into a violent one.

Media (Tribune Online) reports and statements by Tangale Community Development Association (TCDA) and Tangale Community Overseas (TCO) showed that the protest was hijacked from their women and turned into a violent one.

VERDICT: The claim is TRUE, the protest was hijacked from the women as claimed by the governor.

Sixth Claim: The protests resulted in the deaths of innocent persons, damage and destruction of valuable property including residential houses, business premises and mosques

Stories by mainstream media (vanguard, Tribune Online, The Cable), and videos on social media have shown that the violence has led to the destruction of properties, including 3 residential houses, a number of businesses, and some mosques.

Other documents obtained by AFRICA PRIME NEWS including the police FIR Report and statements of Tangale Community Development Association (TCDA) and Tangale Community Overseas (TCO), align with media reports on the destruction of lives and properties.

VERDICT: TRUE, properties were destroyed and lives were loss as claimed by the Governor

Seventh Claim: “On the face of it, some people may be tempted to conclude that the crisis emanated over the choice of a new Mai Tangle even though the protests erupted even before government took a decision on who to appoint.”

Checks by AFRICA PRIME NEWS show that the protest was a result of a delay in announcing the winner of the election (Dr. Musa Idris Maiyamba), and a rumour that the governor was going to announce Mal Danladi Sanusi as Mai Tangle.

These facts are also verifiable in published stories by Nigerian media (Vanguard,  on reasons for the peaceful protest. Tangale Community Overseas (TOC) also made statements to that effect.

VERDICT: FALSE, The crisis was on the choice of a new Mai Tangle. The governor also acted as rumoured. He eventually appointed and announced Mal Danladi Sanusi as the new Mai Tangle (Leadership, Tribune Online, Nigerian News Direct), as against the winner, Dr. Musa Idris Maiyamba.

Eight Claim: Government recently distributed a considerable quantity of palliatives to the people directly and indirectly affected by the crisis

On Monday 12th April, Gombe State Government distributed some food items in Billiri stadium with inscriptions of COVID-19 on them. Both the victims and (interviewed) non-victims of the violence have benefited from the COVID-19 items distributed.

Images of the distributed items are widely seen on social media.

The Billiri distribution came barely two days after the governor flagged-off the phase II of the COVID-19 palliatives distribution in Dukku LGA on 10th April, 2021.

Investigations revealed that most media stories on ‘support to victims’ of the Billiri crisis were mainly press statements from the government public relations unit, not coverage.

VERDICT: It cannot be proven that palliatives were distributed [exclusively] to victims of the crisis.

Iniubong Umoren: The Wicked Attempt to Link Her Death to Akpabio Family Will Fail

0

By Smart Chizurum

The country was recently awash with the sorrowful story of the heinous crime of kidnap and gruesome murder of the innocent job seeker and University of Uyo graduate, Iniubong Umoren recently somewhere in Akwa Ibom State.

Nigerians were shocked to their marrows when it became apparent that one Frank Uduak Akpan was responsible for not only raping her but killing and burying her in a shallow grave somewhere in the State. The police declared the said Frank wanted but arrested his father who was suspected as an accomplice when it became apparent that Frank was on the run. As God would have it, he was eventually arrested through the effort of one Kuffre Effiong and the police who lured and promised him that he will receive the co-operation of the police if he is innocent as he originally claimed.

It is of utmost interest to note that Frank’s arrest was somewhere in Shelter Afrique Junction, Uyo, not in a hotel or a house of anybody.

This story is so tormenting and horrendous that emotions naturally went high when the sad news was broken both on the traditional and social media. The prayer of everyone was that whosoever was responsible for this heinous act for whatever purpose should be brought to justice and no one born of a woman who has blood running in his veins will want this kind of crime to be covered up, no matter the personality/ties involved.

However, it is astonishing and profoundly wicked for any being, let alone a trained journalist to sit in the comfort of his home or office in far away America and concoct lies just to drag the name of Senator Akpabio and his dear wife in the murder saga just to satisfy whosoever is paying him for that kind of “dirty job”.

At what point does fiction transform into a reality and to what end can any sane being market cock and bull story to un-discerning members of the public? It is still shocking that mere conjectures of a journalist have been made  to develop a life and be termed factual without any shred of evidence linking the crime to the Akpabios. The only snag in all these though, is that marketing fictions today through the social media has become the pastime of evil doers and the un-discerning members of the public have become so gullible that these tortoise  stories are taken in, line, hook and sinker without any pinch of salt.

In a short while, we will analyse this story as put out by this David Hundeyin who is said to be a Nigerian Investigative Journalist  resident in America from where he has perfected his nasty habit of running people down with his fictional stories about matters he has no knowledge of, maybe for money or just to garner fame. Reading many of Hadley Chase books is very good, but the danger is when the reader cannot distinguish between fiction and reality.

By the way when his lies fell like pack of cards, he is alleged to have  hurriedly pulled down the story of linking senator Godswill Akpabio  and his dear wife to the murder allegation from his blog or someone’s blog by name Newswirengr where he titled the story “Murder in Uyo: Who Killed Hiny Umoren?” He has a right to refute the story of having pulled it down.

In his report, the journalist claimed that he analyzed the telephone calls of the prime suspect in the murder case, Akpan . According to him, Akpan called a number of people after the murder of the female graduate. He  stated that the said Kuffre Effiong works with Niger Delta Civil Service. He further alleged that  the  killer and the said Kuffre Effiong met physically at a certain 58G, Ewet Housing Estate in Uyo. His “investigative skill” revealed that Akpan the alleged killer worked for an “illegal organ trafficking ring to feed the booming global black market organ trade”.

His fictional story line continued from his Twitter handle on 11th of May where he further published his falsehood as follows ” It has just come to my attention that Davok Suites, the hotel at the centre of the 58 Unit G/S 9, Unit G, Ewet Housing Estate nexus involving Kuffre Effiong and Frank Uduak is owned by none other than Ekaette Akpabio, wife of Godswill Akpabio”.

As evidence of pure insanity occasioned by excessive use of terrible and self destructive drugs, the said David Hundeyin continued,  “In other words, this place where Frank Uduak Akpan, fresh from murdering Ini Umoren came to meet Kuffre Effiong, belongs to the wife of Kuffre’s boss and Federal Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio. So which politician has Kuffre been running errands for?”

Before analyzing David Hundeyin’s super script meant for Nollywood, this writer is very grateful to God that the said culprit, Mr Frank Akpan, his cousin Kuffre Effiong and one Local Government Chairman of Uruan in the State who is a relation to both Kuffre and Frank  are all alive, and happily too the culprit is presently in the custody of the Nigerian Police Authority for proper investigation. These people have made and are still making useful statements to the police authority whom we implore to employ extreme and painstaking professionalism in investigation and come up quickly with their findings, including what steps should be taken to ensure justice to the family of the bereaved. The girl’s death as a matter of fact,  must surely be avenged by the Authorities.

This innocent victim sought to be gainfully employed instead of engaging in anything illegal or criminal like some do,  but met her end in an unfortunate circumstance that demands remedy and justice.

Back to David Hundeyin’s story. He said “he analyzed the telephone calls of the prime suspect and he found out that the suspect called several persons after the murder”. One of the persons he allegedly called, according to him, was Kuffre Effiong who worked with Niger Delta Civil Service. Having found out that the said Kuffre works with Niger Delta Civil Service,  he must have been told by his co-conspirators who specialize in smearing Senator Akpabio’s name to go ahead and link by all means the heinous crime to him in order to make headline and give them a false sense of victory. If only men were God?

In no distant time, his collaborators fed  him another lies that the alleged killer, Mr Frank Akpan met Kuffre in a hotel named  Davok Suites at Ewet Housing Estate in Uyo and they mentioned the address of the place. The Hotel according to him  belongs  to the wife of senator Godswill Akpabio. With that,  he ran to the market with the story that Akpabio and his dear wife were certainly the ones responsible for the heinous murder of the innocent girl, more so since they must have been engaged in his imaginative illicit global market specialising in  trading on human parts!

Fortunately the culprit has made both written and oral statements which the police authority are in custody of. The cousin, Mr Kuffre Effiong has also issued a comprehensive statement on his Facebook Page  which can be seen online by those who want to know the truth and the Local Government Chairman who is in opposing political party with Senator Akpabio has also issued a statement on the incident. By virtue of their various  statements, the following are the emerging truth about this case pending when the  police  will conclude their investigation:

(a) The alleged culprit Mr Frank Akpan, Mr Kuffre Effiong  and the Local Government Chairman of  Uruan are all related as they are cousins. None of them have any relationship with the Akpabios either remotely or directly. None of them has ever met Senator Godswill Akpabio or his wife or their existence known to the couple.

(b) The culprit Mr Frank Akpan was arrested at Shelter Afrique Junction by the Nigerian Police in conjunction with the said Mr Kuffre Effiong, a cousin to the culprit who used his relationship to lure the culprit into police reach for the seamless arrest.

(c) The culprit was taken to the house of the Local Government Chairman of Uruan which is at Ewet Housing Estate in company of the DPO, one ASP and Mr Kuffre Effiong who facilitated the arrest. Taking the culprit to the house of the Chairman at Ewet Housing Estate was the suggestion of the said DPO of the nearby Police Station who felt that it will be a proper place and method to use to calm the suspect down in order to elicit his co-operation.

(d) The alleged Davok Suites, a hotel in Uyo which from the story as stated by the parties in this case  was never utilized either before, during and after the crime, has never been owned and is presently not  belonging  TO THE WIFE OF SENATOR AKPABIO. That the said hotel is alleged to be owned by Her Excellency Mrs Akpabio has been a myth used by the patronizers of the hotel  to boost their ego as to the quality of the hotel they patronize in Uyo. The Akpabios have nothing to do with the hotel in terms of management or ownership. Most importantly in this fictional story of the said Hundeyin,  is the fact that the hotel was never used either before, during or after the crime by the culprit or his alleged accomplices.

(e) To exhaust this issue and make an open show of the concocted cock and bull story of the Investigative journalist David Hundeyin, let me go further to give him the benefit of the doubt that assuming but not conceding that the said Kuffre Effiong, a relation of the culprit who from his own account only assisted the Nigerian Police to arrest the culprit,  works in Niger Delta Ministry, does that mean that any crime he allegedly commits will be attributed to the Minister of the said Ministry? How stupid is that kind of assumption,  especially in criminal jurisprudence which requires mens rea(intention) and actus reus(act of the accused) to establish criminal liability? In the absence of any conspiracy,  direct or circumstantial evidence, no individual can be convicted of a crime he knows nothing about in Nigeria. None here was established in the said story.

(f) Let me extend my generosity further to Mr Hundeyin by assuming but not conceding that the alleged Hotel, Davok Suites is owned by the wife of Senator Akpabio. Will this mean that  any crime committed in the hotel by a user who has no legal, biological or any direct or indirect relationship with the owner will be legally established against the owner of the hotel? In other words, in the absence of any established conspiracy, direct or circumstantial evidence against the owner, can our jurisprudence be suddenly  transformed to hold the owner of a hotel criminally liable for any crime committed using his or her hotel in the absence of any mens rea and actus reus as earlier explained?

Few months ago, I was aware of the  several meetings called by certain persons in Nigeria where activists, top journalists and chronic critics were recruited to engage in public smearing of Akpabio’s name by all means. The battle has been on, they started with the case of the Professor who was recently convicted for alleged electoral fraud during the last Senatorial Election in Akwa Ibom State. When the attempt to link the said fraud with Senator Godswill Akpabio failed like pack of cards as superior and more logical arguments were presented, they recoiled and came up with this one that sounds more stupid and idiotic. We never knew that they can descend into a pit like this, all in a bid to destroy a man for whatever reasons,  known to them.

The Nigerian Police, hopefully are on top of this Umoren’s unfortunate death. They should be allowed to carry out a full scale investigation as to who and those behind the gruesome rape and murder of that innocent girl. Using the unfortunate incident to run down Senator Godswill Akpabio and his family has failed woefully. The truth of the matter is that “No weapon fashion against Senator Godswill Akpabio whether now, tomorrow or in the future will stand”. The reason for this is,  “No man can curse a man whom God has marked out for blessings”.

Mr Hundeyin has committed both criminal and civil wrongs in this campaign of calumny against Senator Akpabio and that of his wife. If he thinks that by being in  far away America he can utilise the social space to malign someone and escape justice, he has committed a grievous  error.  The arms of the law will ultimately catch up with him if he fails, refuses and neglects to withdraw his  cock and bull story about the involvement of the Akpabios in the unfortunate incident of Ini’s death and apologize to them, he stands all the legal risks associated with such criminal and civil defamation. It is his choice!

Enough said.
