Western Cape Welcomes Registration of Rooibos by European Commission

0

Western Cape government has welcomed the European Commission’s registration of Rooibos in its lists of Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

“Product names registered as PDO have strong links to their origin, since every production, processing, and preparation aspect must take place in that specific origin using recognised know-how,” a statement by Western Cape government says.

In contrast, PGI requires that at least one of the stages of production, processing or preparation takes place in the place of origin.

The provincial government said the recognition by the EU was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 31 May 2021.

According to reports, Rooibos has joined the likes of Champagne and Irish whiskey to be included in the EU’s Protected Geographical Indication register.

Western Cape Agriculture MEC, Dr Ivan Meyer, has described Rooibos as one of the most iconic products in the province.

“Its inclusion in the EU’s Geographical Indication Register will signal its unique quality to consumers, not only in Europe but all over the world.”

The registration will also allow South Africa’s Rooibos industry to use the EU logo that is well recognised by consumers in Europe, which will indicate its value as a unique and exclusive product.

“It will also enable South African producers of Rooibos or Red Bush to market their products better in the EU. We expect that this will lead to an increase in demand by discerning consumers with the benefits eventually trickling back to farms in the designated production area.”

The decision also means people cannot call tea Rooibos if it was not cultivated or wild-harvested in designated local municipalities of the Western and Northern Cape.

The provincial government said the department has been working with the Rooibos industry since the 1990s to prevent the name from being misused by others.

“In this way, we safeguard our heritage for posterity,” said Meyer.

The decision by the EU creates the ideal platform for growing the Rooibos industry.

“Safeguarding our traditions and culture will certainly advance the Rooibos industry’s commercial interests and lead to an increase in production, exports and jobs,” Meyer said.

The provincial department quoted the South African Rooibos Council, which said the industry provides income and employment to approximately 8 000 agricultural workers.

Other jobs are created in upstream activities such as processing, packaging and retailing.

National President, Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of Nigeria, Haruna Danjuma, has called for the establishment of an Education Foundation to support children of the poor to continue their educational studies in Kaduna State University.

“We are begging Dangote, BOA Group Company, and other wealthy individuals from northern part of the country to help the poor children toward continuing their educational career,” the national president told journalists, while calling on top politicians, companies, banks, top musicians and other celebrities to help students in paying their school fees.

The chairman who noted the demonstration by students against the increase said, the hike in tuition fees will discourage students from underprivileged families from continuing their studies.

“Most students find it difficult to pay the N26,000 fees, with few dropping out of school,” he said.

Recently, Kaduna State Ministry of Education announced about 500% increase in tuition fees in all its tertiary institutions.

The PTA President who described the increase as “outrageous” considering the current economic hardship and negative impact of COVID-19, appealed to the government to review its position.

“Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria is still begging the state government to reverse the school fees to save our children,” he said.

Mr. Danjuma equally called for improved security measures in all Nigerian schools to protect them from attacks by bandits, terrorist and kidnappers which is currently affecting education system in Nigeria.

South Africa: Former Transnet Board Member Denied Bail in Corruption Case

0

South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Investigating Directorate has welcomed the bail denial of former Transnet Board member and Gupta family associate, Iqbal Sharma.

The Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Tuesday ordered that Sharma remain behind bars until he appears again in court on 5 July.

This after the state proved that he was a flight risk as he had failed to disclose that he had transferred R264.4 million to Issar Global in 2016. The company is based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Investigating Directorate further told the court that the businessman’s South African assets account for 10% of his total assets.

“He has made more than 100 flights to and from the airports in the UAE since 2010. Sharma is a citizen of the world and has connections to several foreign countries. He additionally speaks three different international languages: French, Urdu, and Hindi,” Investigating Directorate spokesperson Sindisiwe Seboka said in a statement.

Sharma and three others were arrested on 3 June in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and the Free State. The three – former Free State, Agriculture, and Rural Development (FSDoARD) head, Peter Thabethe; former head of  the Free State Department of Agriculture (FSDoA), Limakatso Moorosi; and former FSDoA Chief Financial Officer, Seipati Dhlamini – have all been granted R10 000 bail.

Sharma is amongst 16 other accused who face charges relating to defrauding the Free State Department of Agriculture (FSDoA).

The fraud is in connection with a R25 million feasibility study in 2011 that was irregularly granted to Nulane Investment 204 (PTY) LTD, a company owned and controlled by Sharma.

The company had to provide a report to the department within seven months. Nulane, however, subcontracted the work to Deloitte Consulting Pty Ltd for R1.5 million.

Furthermore, said Seboka, it subcontracted the work already completed by Deloitte to Gateway Limited and paid them over R19 million.

“From there, the funds were diverted to Islandsite Investments 180 (Pty) Ltd (Islandsite), a company owned and controlled by the Gupta family. The accused face charges of fraud and money laundering. The former government officials are also charged with contravention of the Public Finance Management Act.”

The fifth suspect in the matter, Iqbal Sharma’s brother-in-law and a representative of Nulane Investments, Dinesh Patel, will formally appear on 15 June 2021, owing to health reasons. They are charged together with three companies, Nulane Investment 204 (Pty) Ltd (owned and controlled by Sharma), Wone Management (PTY) LTD, Pragat Investment (Pty) LTD and Islandsite Investments Pty Ltd.

The Investigating Directorate said the balance of the accused listed in the charge sheet are not currently in South Africa.

All the accused are expected back in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on 5 July 2021. The directorate has concluded Investigations, is ready to hand over the docket to the defence and start with the trial as soon as possible.
