The #BeingYoungInNaija (BYIN) Project Team has called on the Federal Government to implement youth-oriented policies via collaborations with youth-led bodies, key national agencies and policymakers.
The team made the call while briefing the media on its second phase of the youth advocacy project in Abuja on Friday.
The project is launched by the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief (OXFAM) and implemented by Chioma Chuka Consulting Services Limited (CCCSL) under the Work in Progress (WiP) alliance.
Ms Grace Attah, BYIN Project Lead, said the project wanted to amplify young Nigerian voices, highlight their experiences, challenges & the opportunities available to them.
”It also underscores the critical need to engage government and stakeholders on youth-oriented policies via collaborations with youth-led bodies, key national agencies and policymakers to achieve tangible global action.
”We hope to create structures to enhance youth and state engagement avenues via key stakeholder partnerships targeting organisations with a youth-centric focus, “she said.
Attah, also called on relevant stakeholders to deliver on the National Youth Policy (NYP), which she said had stipulated priorities, policy directions and practical support to develop young Nigerians.
“It indicates the readiness of the Nigerian Government and its people to meet the needs and aspirations of the youth and seek solutions to their problems,” she said.
According to her, evidence shows that Nigerian youth are amongst the most enterprising globally, using their skills to drive positive change and create value in their communities.
She, however, added that their skills were often under-utilised due to lack of opportunities, support, encouragement to contribute to nation-building and development.
The team lead revealed that the complete implementation of the NYP would address these gaps and ensure that young people and the entire nation stand a chance of an assured future.
“Thus, today, we’re restating our call to government agencies and relevant stakeholders to dedicate more resources to youth development programmes, especially as provided within the NYP.
” We are also calling for the implementation of the NYP through partnership building and putting in place sustainable structures that support youth development.
”We also solicit the support of the media and well-meaning Nigerians to continue to hold the government and other stakeholders to account concerning the commitments outlined in the NYP,” she said.
Similarly, Mr Princewill Ogbodo, representative of OXFAM, stressed the need to amplify youths’ voices and involvement for more national development.
Ogbodo said the project sought to create more awareness on youth engagement and to solicit for government’s support in youth development.
Also, Ms Amanda Ejus, representing Education as a Vaccine (EVA), called on social media influencers to use their fame and platforms to encourage more youths involvement in national issues, education, politics, elimination of Gender Based Violence amongst others.

A Veterinarian and Managing Consultant of OmniAgrik Specialities, Dr Yila Umaru, has identified food insecurity as the biggest challenge facing Nigeria possibly turning her to a hunger hotspot.
By extension, it is also a globally issue, where about 800million people go to bed with hunger, which constitutes about 10% of the world population.
Dr Yila was delivering a lecture at a One-day Media Training on Food Security and Nutrition, Wednesday in Kaduna, organized by Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF), in partnership with OmniAgrik Specialities.
Having realized the role of the media, he explained, the Organisers decided to train journalists in order to create awareness, thereby set an agenda that would provoke attention of government to take action against food insecurity.
Dr. Umaru listed a number of negative factors impacting on food status as weather condition, political instability, economy, unemployment and rising food prices , among others.
Without mincing words, the Expert stated that the biggest challenge before Nigeria is not that of an impending war, but that of food insecurity, which is already at the doorstep as predicted by the UN, saying it is getting worst by the days.
Nigerians, he observed, do not have adequate physical, social and economic access to food.
“We eat food in order to maintain our body system, food should be taken at interval with proper nutrition value, and not when available. This would help the body system to get the required nutrition that is needed,” he emphasized.
While identifying malnutrition as the most destroyer to human potential on the planet, Dr Yila said most deaths in children are hunger related, arising from shortage in supply of the needed food with proper nutritional value for children.
He observed that even those who survived are either faced with one disability or the other, because of the insufficient nutrition in the food children consumed, which also contribute to the learning ability of the children in school.
As a result of this, the Expert spotted children as the most vulnerable group because of lack of protein and essential food and minerals, which leads to malnutrition and other forms of illness.
He said the most dangerous days in child’s life is the first 1000 days, from conception, and that the best way to guarantee food security is with the mother, who the child run to any time he or she is hungry.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has called for an immediate truce between the warring Ethiopian factions to restore peace and order the Eastern and the Horn of Africa region.
Kenyatta said the conflict, which has resulted into the death of thousands and displacement of millions, threatens the economic stability of the region.
“The crisis has now escalated into a nationwide social convulsion of historical proportion for Ethiopia. The origins of the crisis, bitter and unacceptable as they might appear, can nolonger be used as a justification for the continued suffering, killings and the extended open warfare that now engulfs the nation.” President Kenyatta said on Wednesday 4th November, 2021, after holding talks with Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs minister, Demeke Mekonnen.
The conflict pitting the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) against Prime Minister Aby Ahmed’s Federal Government of Ethiopia began in November 2020 and has escalated into a regional crisis. Ethiopian refugees fleeing the bloodbath are seeking solace in neighbouring countries like Kenya, Sudan and Eritrea.
The Tigrayan rebels are bitterly opposed to the Aby Ahmed’s government, which it accuses of marginalization of the Tigrayan region, a volatile part of Ethiopia that has fought successive Ethiopian regimes to be granted autonomy.
The rebels are advancing to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, which also doubles as the seat of the African Union. The Ethiopian government has responded by declaring a six-month state of emergency.

Israel is preparing to launch a massive balloon into its northern sky that can detect long-range threats.
The inflatable missile detection system is designed to hover at high altitudes and detect incoming long-range missiles, cruise missiles and drones.
The High Availability Aerostat System resembles a giant blimp and is one of the world’s largest systems of its kind, the Defense Ministry said. It will be deployed shortly at an unspecified date.
The system, dubbed “Sky Dew,” was developed in cooperation with a subsidiary of state-owned Israel Aerospace Industries and TCOM, a US aerostat manufacturer.
It’s part of Israel’s broader effort to increase its air defenses against threats from Iran and its proxies in the region. Israel is particularly concerned about the Hezbollah terror group on its northern border with Lebanon. Israeli officials say Hezbollah has an arsenal of short and long-range missiles that is far superior to the one Hamas has in the Gaza Strip.
Because of this threat, Israel’s military is aiming to have full-scale, permanent defensive coverage of its northern airspace within the next two years, with plans to eventually expand it to the entire country, The Times of Israel reports.
Sky Dew is just one tool of many Israel is using to accomplish this goal.
Israeli Air Force chief Amikam Norkin praised the new Sky Dew system, saying it would “enable us to build a more accurate and broader air surveillance picture.”
“The [Israeli Air Force] has both the defensive and offensive systems to defend the State of Israel and its sovereignty,” he added.

For the third time within 72 hours, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was at the site of the Ikoyi building collapse to see how the search and recovery operation was being conducted, and also to boost the morale of the emergency responders on site.
The Governor expressed satisfaction with the rescue operation, commending the first responders for their efforts. He also met with some of the distressed family members at the site, cheering them and raising their hopes, while the rescue efforts progressed.
Sanwo-Olu was in company of his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, at the site for over three hours.
The actual number of persons trapped in the collapsed 21-storey building remains unclear as at Thursday afternoon, but 32 fatalities have been recorded, the Governor confirmed.
Sanwo-Olu, while giving an update to the press, disclosed that family members had submitted 19 names of those still missing, saying the ongoing corona inquest on the bodies evacuated from the site was expected to be concluded by Friday (tomorrow) after which families would be invited to identify them.
He said: “Yesterday (Wednesday), we opened a register for people that have missing persons or loved ones whom they believed must have been at the site before the collapse. As I speak here, it is only 19 names of missing persons that have been registered. Some of them have pictures, others do not. This list would help us to get information on manifest of those at the site.
“As at this afternoon, we have recovered a total of 32 bodies. We are conducting a corona inquest on the bodies and by tomorrow (Friday), we hope the exercise would have been concluded. That is the deadline we gave to the corona, so that the families can come and identify the bodies recovered so far.”
Earlier on Thursday, the Governor visited Lagos Island General Hospital where survivors of the building collapse are being given medical attention.
One of the nine people rescued alive, Sanwo-Olu said, has been moved to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja for advanced medical examination, but he is not in a life-threatening situation. Three survivors were discharged two days ago.
The Governor said he had ordered structural integrity test on two high-rise structures in the premises where the 21-storey collapsed. The action, he said, is necessary to safeguard the lives of emergency workers on the rescue operation.
Sanwo-Olu appealed to journalists covering the incident on speculative reporting and sensationalism, asking them to confirm any unclear details about the search and rescue operation from the official channel of communication. The Governor was reacting to inconsistent figures of fatality being spread by the media.
He said: “Ministries of Information, Special Duties and Health are fully on ground at the scene. Among these key ministries, members of the public can get answers to any information not clear to them.”
The multi-sectoral search and rescue operation was ongoing at press time. The effort is being led by teams of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), with the support of construction giants, Julius Berger, Craneburg, HiTech and China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC).
