By Joseph Edegbo

More than 100,000 Activists from around the world including the Nigerian – Kaduna born Gloria Kasang Bulus took to streets of Glasgow and Summit hallways to express their frustration and demand for more drastic measures from world leaders.

The activists are demanding among others, end to the reliance of fossil fuels,  accountability for the massive environmental impact of war and military action, reformation of unsustainable fishing practices and reparation for the frontline communities experiencing climate change, especially the world’s indigenous tribes.

The COP witnessed heavy criticisms for failing to meet the moment as some activists described it as  “a 2- week celebration of business as usual and blah blah blah”

The Nigerian Activist, Gloria Kasang Bulus , Founder of “Bridge That Gap” Initiative and an Award Winning Climate Communicator who armed herself with a placard with an inscription “Loss and Damage” said ” Everyday we are experiencing loss and damage as a result of climate related disasters and yet little time and little attention is given to loss and damage. Lots of time and lots of energy needs to be given especially during COP. The damage is huge, the loss is on the increase”, She frowned .

A Jamaican born Activist, Mikaela Loach who is suing the British Government for unlawful gas and oil subsidies said, This is worse than hypocrisy.

The COP26 Climate Conference which has however been seen as the last chance to establish climate agenda, featured world’s most prominent political, economic and environmental leaders to commit to transitioning the world away from Fossil Fuels.

Some agreements were made during the summit which more than 100 countries pledged to end deforestation by 2030.

By Joseph Edegbo :

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has been commended by the immediate past President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on his development programmes in the state.

The former President, speaking at a special luncheon upon his reception, commended the pace of development in Akwa Ibom State under the leadership of Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Jonathan who was accompanied by wife, Patience, described the governor as a brilliant, competent gentleman that deserves to be encouraged for greater roles.

Dr. Jonathan, who is in the state for the annual conference of the Nigeria Environmental Society and the marriage ceremony of the first daughter of his long time friend and fellow pioneer student of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Richard King, stressed that given his acquaintance with the progress of Akwa Ibom since 1994, he is in a good position to judge the development of the state.

“You’re a gentleman, very competent person, a brilliant young man that needs to be encouraged and I believe he will continue to grow”, he stated.

“From what we read and from what we see, you are doing very well. If you come into Akwa Ibom, you see a state that is growing. From 1994 when I was employed as the Assistant Director of Environmental Protection, OMPADEC, till I left office, there was almost no year I didn’t come to Akwa Ibom, so I can monitor the development of Akwa Ibom and I’m quite pleased with the way the state is going”.

He prayed for Governor Emmanuel to have a good successor who will follow his good steps and continue to lead the state towards greater heights.

Welcoming the guests, Governor Emmanuel, expressed great pleasure on the visit of the former President, describing him as the pride of the country.

The governor also seized the opportunity to thank the former President and wife for identifying with him and his family during his father’s funeral, describing him as a great leader, a father and a brother.

Reflecting on the days of Goodluck Jonathan as President, Governor Emmanuel said Nigeria, in all indices, was better and expressed regrets that Nigerians have only come to realize what they have lost after his exit.

This, he referred to as ‘medicine after death.’

“I made a speech the other day. You know I like talking data. I analyzed the growth, the GDP, the exchange rate, by the time I finished the analyses, it was so clear that we did much better and today everybody, every eyes have seen how the economy has been debased.

“That’s why I say we feel proud of you anywhere we go to”.

How We Arrested 14 Suspects For Invasion Of Abuja Residence Of Justice Mary Odili – Nigeria Police

0

By Sunday Elijah

Nigeria Police Force on Thursday, has described how it arrested fourteen (14) suspects “including the principal suspect – a fake Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP)” – for complicity in the failed “criminal trespass” on the Abuja residence of Justice Mary Odili on Friday, 29th October, 2021.

A statement by the Force spokesman, FRANK MBA, says the suspects were arrested following investigations conducted by detectives from the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) which revealed the ‘criminal involvement and individual roles’ each of the suspects played in the invasion of the residence of the revered Supreme Court Judge.

“Recall that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc (+), NPM, fdc, on 1st November, 2021, affirmed that the Force did not authorize security operatives to carry out any assignment in or around the residence of Justice Mary Odili and directed the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) to carry out a discrete investigation with the aim of bringing the perpetrators to book,” the statement says.

“The suspects; Ajodo Lawrence ‘m’ (principal suspect), Michael Diete-Spiff ‘m’, Bar. Alex Onyekuru ‘m’, Bayero Lawal ‘m’, Bar. Igwe Ernest ‘m’, Aliyu Umar Ibrahim ‘m’, Maimuna Maishanu ‘f’, Ayodele Akindipe ‘m’, Yusuf Adamu ‘m’, Bashir Musa ‘m’, ASP Mohammed Yahaya ‘m’, Stanley Nkwazema ‘m’, Shehu Jibo ‘m’ and Abdullahi Adamu ‘m’, L/CPL Mike (other name unknown) ‘m’, are members of a well-organized criminal gang with a web-like involvement of individuals drawing from their different competences, professional background and social contacts in perfecting the criminal plot. Membership of the syndicate include suspects with background in public service, business, law, journalism, banking, amongst others.

“The facts of the case from Police Investigations have it that one Aliyu Umar Ibrahim, an acclaimed whistle blower, following a baseless and unverified information he got from one Yusuf Adamu – parading himself as the godson of Chief Peter Odili – that there is a huge sum of money in foreign currencies starched in the residence of Her Lordship, Justice Mary Odili located at No. 7, Imo River Street, Maitama, initiated processes aimed at illegally recovering the said money. Consequently, the syndicate contacted one Bashir Musa, a clerical staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), who in turn sought the assistance of two (2) others – Shehu Jibo and Abdullahi Adamu.

“The whistle blower was later introduced to one Bayero Lawal who falsely presented himself as a Director in EFCC. He took the whistle blower to one Hajiya Maimuna Maishanu who in-turn took them to her cousin, Michael Diete-Spiff, who claimed to be the Director of Foreign Currency Operation of Ghost’s Account for Local Whistle Blowers & Assets Recovery Panel, purportedly operating under the Federal Ministry of Justice – an agency that in fact does not exist.

“Diete-Spiff later introduced the whistle blower to one Lawrence Ajodo with the aid of one Godwin (currently at large). From this moment, Lawrence Ajodo – who falsely claimed to be a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) and also the officer in-charge of a non-existing Asset Recovery Panel at the Federal Ministry of Justice took over the planning and execution of the illicit operation. Through the assistance of one Ayodele Akindipe, an herbalist, the fake CSP procured the services of an Assistant Superintendent of Police and two (2) Soldiers for the failed operation.

“The fake CSP also elicited the services of a journalist, one Stanley Nkwazema and two (2) lawyers namely Bar. Alex Onyekuru and Bar. Igwe Ernest. While the journalist was expected to play the blackmail role, the lawyers were expected to help the syndicate in perfecting court documents and processes. The fake CSP later deposed to an affidavit and eventually obtained a search warrant meant for the execution of the raid.

“Investigations so far conducted by the Police show that the suspects criminally trespassed on the residence of Her Lordship but were not allowed to execute the search warrant due to the lawful resistance from Police officers on guard duty at her residence. Police findings also revealed that the principal suspect – Lawrence Ajodo – is an impostor and not a police officer as he falsely claimed. Similarly, the Ghost’s Account for Local Whistle Blowers & Assets Tax Recovery Panel purportedly operating under the Federal Ministry of Justice does not exist at the Federal Ministry of Justice neither is it registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

“Also, the signature of the Honourable Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN) on the ID card presented by the fake CSP during the raid was forged. The Search Warrant which the suspects procured from a Magistrate Court for purposes of searching the premises of Justice Odili, was also obtained under false representation. The entire criminal operation has no authorization of any known Security Agency or Federal Government Ministry/Department.

“Three (3) vehicles used by the suspects for the illegal invasion and a laptop computer, printer and flash drive used for the production of the fake ID cards were recovered from the suspects by the Police investigators.

“Meanwhile, investigation is being intensified to arrest the other seven (7) suspects including two (2) persons believed to be personnel of the Nigeria Army who were physically present during the raid, and fully dressed in Army uniform.

“The IGP, while assuring diligent prosecution of the suspects, reiterated the commitment of the Force to continue to advance the rule of law and combatting all forms of crimes and criminality in the country,” the statement says.

Nigeria: APC-Led-FG Browbeating Judiciary Ahead of 2023 -Wike

0

 By Joseph Edegbo :

Rivers State Governor, Nyeson Wike said the invasion of the residence of Justice of the Supreme Court, Hon. Justice Mary Odili, is a precursor to Federal Government’s infamous tactic of browbeating the judiciary to a state of fear and conformity as the country enters next political season.

The governor said the Federal Government wants to continue to ride roughshod unchecked over the rule of law and the sanctity of the country’s electoral system, hence, the renewed attack on judicial officers.

The Rivers State governor made this assertion at a special court session to mark the opening of the 2021/2022 Legal Year of the Rivers State judiciary held at the Chief Judge’s ceremonial court, Port Harcourt on Thursday.

“Although it is still early morning in our democratic match towards 2023, the attack on Justice Mary Odili is a prelude to many more and even worse political manoeuvrings we should be prepared to experience from the APC-led Federal Government, which having lost relevance and popular support is becoming more and more desperate over its dwindling political fortunes by the day.

“While cases with political undertones, including the constitutional validity of certain sections of the recent amendments to the 2010 Electoral Act, if assented to by Mr President, would necessarily come before our courts; what is important is the duty and capacity of our judiciary to save our democracy and the country.”

He noted that it is the responsibility of the Government at all levels to protect the judiciary and accord the Courts with such assistance as they may require to enable them to safeguard their independence, advance the rule of law and dispense justice equally and fairly to all citizens.

According to him, unfortunately, while the present Federal Government has been very weak in resourcing and strengthening the judiciary; it has been very strong and readily predisposed to ridiculing the entire institution and subjecting individual judges to both physical and psychological trauma for its own self-interest.

“We all witnessed the infamous midnight raids on judicial residences and the subjection of some judges, to illegal raids, arrests and detentions by agents of the Federal Government purportedly carrying out a baseless sting operation back in 2016.

“Since then the intimidation of judges whose judgments, intellectual or moral disposition they are not comfortable with has continued unrelenting with the latest attack on a peaceful mother, wife of a former Governor and Justice of the Supreme Court, our own highly revered Hon. Justice Mary Odili.

“It is important to emphasize that we allow these intimidations to become acceptable standards of behaviour and even become complicit in their unholy design to undermine the administration of justice when we all opt to keep quite in the face of these assaults.”

Governor Wike , who commended the leaders of the Nigerian Bar Association, the Body of Senior Advocates, the Chief Justice of Nigeria and members of the public for promptly condemning the idiotic siege on judiciary, said they must quickly move beyond the verbal protestations to unveil those behind the raid on Justice Odili’s residence and ensure that they all are held to account for their actions, otherwise this impunity would never cease to rear its ugly head in the country.

He challenged the Federal Government to come clean on this infamy with the names, identities and affiliations of those allegedly arrested for their roles or found to have been involved in the attack on the residence of Justice Odili, if it is not to be perceived as the primary mastermind.

Speaking on the proposed proliferation of Law School campuses, the governor urged the management of the Nigerian Law School, the Council of Legal Education and the Federal Government to see the folly in the plan, and nib the idea from the bud before it causes more damage to a foremost institution that is already severely challenged for lack of adequate funding.

He explained that the Port Harcourt Campus of the Nigerian Law School being built by the State government was consciously demanded for and approval secured from the Council of Legal Education and ultimately from President Muhammadu Buhari, through the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and named after late Nabo Graham-Douglas, SAN.

“Here again, some lazy and uninformed characters have criticised our Law School development project with the unfounded and lousy allegation that it lacks budgetary provisions in our 2021 budget, even when they conceded to the propriety of the project and the optimal benefits it would attract to the State and the business community.”

Governor Wike said in the last six years, his administration has continued to improve the welfare and wellbeing of State judicial officers, especially, the provision of new cars, comfortable and well-resourced offices, as well as the provision of life-long residences for all judicial officers, including those serving in Federal courts and other jurisdictions external to the State.

Chief Judge of Rivers State, Hon. Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi said since assumption of office in May 2021, he has administered the judiciary with commitment in order to raise the bar of performance of judicial officers and staff that should reflect in speedy dispensation of justice.

According to him, training sessions have been organised for manpower capacity development in mediation practices, infrastructure improved, and the magistracy practice laws and rules revisited for purposes of review.

Justice Amadi stated that of the 30227 cases, 11719 cases were disposed off and warned that no application from any lawyer for a transfer of cases will be tolerated if such case has already entertained at least two witnesses in court.

The grand total of fees and fines generated or realised by the project registry, deputy sheriff office, appeal registry, archives and records, the high court, magistrate court, mobile courts, and sanitation courts, within the period under review is N376,159, 369.74 kobo.

“This is a positive difference of an increase in revenue of N28, 476,200.08 kobo. The total fees and fine generated by Customary Court of Appeal is N55, 130, 750, over and above their last years IGR of N35, 444, 470.”

In his speech, the Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor, SAN, said it is imperative for members of the Bench and Bar to reaffirm their unwavering commitment to the effective, efficient and speedy administration of justice in order to continue to enjoy the confidence of Nigerians.

Prof. Adangor opined that it is difficult to imagine a Nigeria’s society without the court system because the whole concept of the rule of law, and cherished constitutional democracy will have no meaning if the needless attack on the judiciary that undermines civilisation is left unchallenged.

The former President, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Onueze C.J Okocha, SAN and the NBA Port Harcourt branch, Prince Nyekwere respectively condemned the attack on the residence of Justice Mary Odili. And demanded that the perpetrators be apprehended and prosecuted

Earlier, a rededication church service was held at the St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral in Port Harcourt where Governor Wike took the first lesson, while Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, took the second lesson.

In his sermon, Archbishop of the Province of Niger Delta, Most Rev. Blessing Enyindah charged the judiciary to remain committed to upholding the law and do justice to everyone equally despite the status.

He pointed out that Nigeria cannot be a great country if its laws that are reasonable and designed for the well-being of the people is skewed and violated by the judiciary because it is unable to administer unbiased Justice

The Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, gave the commendation while on a facility tour of the agency in Magodo.

He said: “It is my belief that LASRAB has everything it takes to promote Lagos culture beyond the country, including our architecture, commerce and culture. Everything that Lagos stands for should be exposed to the world so that anyone can come here and find out for themselves”.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Olusina Thorpe, stated that the Bureau needs more visibility as well as necessary engagements with the public, especially Lagos State school students, to pay regular visits to the Agency in order to learn more about the great city of Lagos.

Thorpe, therefore, encouraged the Agency to collaborate with the Ministry of Education and SUBEB to run a shift of weekly school visits to the Bureau as a way of promoting the rich heritage of the State among school children.

While appreciating the State Officials for the visit, the Director-General of LASRAB, Mrs. Bilikis Adebiyi-Abiola, who took the team on a tour of the complex, stated that the Bureau will achieve more with the support of the Ministry as the Agency is working assiduously to ensure the conversion of over 70 successful candidates into Archivist Cadre.

According to her, the feat will enable the Bureau to have competent Archivists to man the open and secret registries of MDAs in order to standardise record-keeping of the Lagos State Government in line with world best practices.

Recall that LASRAB was established in 1995 as a repository and data bank on all things involving Lagos State, dating back to its creation, with pictures and artefacts. It also houses records of Lagos State’s past administrations and historic events.

“At Milyash Alternative Medicine Specialist Clinic, we have put in place facilities that will first diagnose ailments before commencing the treatment”, she added.
The Manager of the Clinic, Thomas Appiah, stated that the products are made in such a way that an average person can afford the treatments/drugs, adding that the emphasis is on the potency of treatment by the clinic.
“Our products are quite affordable considering the cost of raw materials, production and price tag on the finished products. One would realise that the company has done justice in terms of affordability”, he asserted.

“Our administration is resolved to uniting this nation and we need the involvement of the church in achieving this agenda.

“We are bringing in a different style of leadership, one that is anchored on good governance and accountability. Our fight against corruption is not a tribal issue; it’s to protect the assets and use that money to create more jobs.

“It’s on this basis that we are working on recovering all assets belonging to Zambians. Our fight against corruption is and will never be selective. We will recover that which belongs to the people of Zambia.
