Trust Editorial: Life Has Lost Its Value Under Buhari’s Nigeria

In a space of just two days last week, 23 travellers heading to Kaduna were burnt alive in a commercial bus at Sabon Birni, Sokoto State. No fewer than 15 worshipers killed as they prayed in a mosque at Ba’are village, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State. A Commissioner in the service of Katsina State, Dr Rabe Nasir was gruesomely murdered in his own house located atl Fatima Shema Quarters in Katsina city, while a housewife identified only as Salamatu, was killed as bandits abducted six others during a raid at Piri community in Kwali Area Council of Abuja.

Welcome to northern Nigeria, circa 2021, where life has seemingly lost its value, under a President voted en masse five times by the same populace. The commissioner was stabbed several times until he died. A 30-year-old woman watched as her mother, four children, an uncle, a nephew, and a niece, all burnt to ashes. She died too a few days later. Their attackers, of course, watched in delight as they burn.

But the horror and barbarism of these killings is only one thing. The frequency with which these gruesome killings occur and recur is another. The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, summed up the sorrow and grief-stricken mood of the region and the nation, when he said, shortly after these events, that, “if I continue talking about the insecurity in the North, we will not leave this room… There is no single day that passes without people being killed in the North especially in the North West now, but we don’t hear it,” even as bandits continue to kill and maim in part of Katsina State and elsewhere in the North.

But beyond the blood-thirstiness of the attackers, the unending recurrence of their gruesome attacks, and the helplessness and haplessness of the victims, it is the seeming unwillingness and disinterest of the highest authority in the land to even show some concern that grates the most. What more needs to happen before President Buhari would show that he cares? What more needs to happen before the President would genuinely demonstrate that he feels the silent anguish of hundreds of communities and thousands of citizens everywhere across the north and the country at large?

Only a few years ago President Buhari too bemoaned these very events, even when they occurred at a much lower scale than now, and that his bemoaning them was part of the very reason he was elected to the presidency to solve them. It is the very people who lined up under the rain and shine to cast their votes for him to become president—at the fourth time of asking—who are routinely killed, maimed or taxed by bandits and terrorists of all hue under his watch today.

Votes and elections are expressions of hope. When has mass death become the reward for voting a candidate or party to power? And yet, President Buhari has scarcely seen it fit to visit the families of the victims or the leaders of the communities affected, to at least demonstrate compassion and solidarity with them, if not to lead a counter-offensive against the terrorists as a Commander-in-Chief. True, the President dispatched a high-level delegation of military, police and intelligence chiefs to two of the states affected, but he himself was, of course, in attendance at a book launch of a party chieftain in Lagos.

We do not deem the delegation less worthy, but the President’s own priorities, at such a sad period for many Nigerian families, is not only of the poorest judgment imaginable, but amounts to a clear indication that he does not care enough about the lives of those killed or maimed. Yet, even the poor judgment itself and the logical conclusion it leaves in the minds of many are themselves merely part of a set pattern.

Whenever bandits strike with murderous fury at communities in Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Niger or Sokoto states, or elsewhere across mostly northern Nigeria, the president’s response is easily predicted. He would announce, usually on his Facebook page, that he has directed the police and military chiefs to do more, and then wait for the next attack to regurgitate the same comments. This sends only one clear message: the President is not responsive to tragedy of ordinary Nigerians, especially if those are from the north. And it is this flippant and dismissive attitude to the sufferings of people across the north that many find most grating and unacceptable.

That much has been said by many ordinary Nigerians, on social media as well any other channels available to them. Perhaps the only thing left to be said is that the president must recognize that this is not a problem that neither he nor his government can wish away. His reluctance to engage directly with it and with the communities affected in order to find a lasting solution would not make the problem go away.

As it has evolved in the past decade or so, what we call ‘banditry’ in northern Nigeria today is an amalgam of many complex issues, among them high levels of poverty and unemployment in the region, deeply entrenched feelings of past dispossession and exclusion, climate change, and above all, a near complete break-down of law and moral order in society. We are not oblivious of the difficulties to the problem.

Yet, we are aware, and wish to remind President Buhari today, that no one in Nigeria is better positioned than he is in helping to find a lasting solution to them; certainly no one has put himself forward—with tears in his eyes in one failed attempt to boot—more frequently and vigorously than he did. Therefore, the obligation is just as personal as official, or should be, to move the president to personally take charge of the counter-offensive against terrorists, in the north or elsewhere in the country.

Force alone will not be enough. But it is a truism that where there is the will there is a way. The President will find all the ways once he first musters the will to say ‘not under my watch would Nigerian life lose its value’. Otherwise, history will remember because that is already happening

By Joab Apollo

A movement bringing together allies of President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has unanimously declared the latter as its 2022 presidential candidate.

At a fun-filled convention held at the 60, 000 seater Kasarani Stadium, the Azimio La Umoja (aspiration to be United) movement declared that Odinga is the safest pair of hands to champion social political and economic development of the East African country.

Delegates, who included senior government officials, seasoned politicians, local and international investors, paid a glowing tribute to Odinga, describing him as a battle-hardened reforms champion.

Odinga said his main agenda will be to tackle graft, public debt, industrialization and protection of private property. He poignantly recalled his days in detention under the then authoritarian Kenya Africa National Unity (KANU) regime.

“The tears from the torture Chambers are still running as you can tell from the handkerchief that never leaves my hand.” He said

Renowned New York based Kenyan Professor of Law Makau Mutua, said that with the endorsement, Odinga is now set to smoothly occupy Kenya’s leadership mantle.

“He has no competitor. He plays in the Champions League.” The Harvard educated scholar told the crowd, to a thunderous applause.

It will be the fifth time Odinga will be gunning for the presidency. This time, he will be facing Deputy President William Ruto, who has since fallen out with President Kenyatta. The genesis of their feud being Kenyatta’s political truce with Odinga, which he believes was a well-orchestrated plot to curtail his presidential chances.

By Joseph Edegbo :

The national reconciliation Committee of the All Progressives Congress, APC has visited Gombe State where it interacted with Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya and other senior stakeholders .

This is with a view to addressing any perceived grievances and disagreements arising from the recently concluded party congresses.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after a closed door meeting at the old Banquet Hall of the Government House, Chairman of the committee and former governor of Nasarawa state, Senator Abdullahi Adamu said after hours of deliberations, it became clear to the committee beyond any reasonable doubt, that Gombe state APC is intact and stronger under the leadership of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

When asked on who leads the party direction in the state, Senator Abdullahi Adamu made it clear that “no institution operates without a leader and APC is not an exception; therefore heads of governments lead the party direction everywhere”.

“You see I rear cattle and anytime you see a herd of cattle you will see one of them leading the direction while the rest follow that; this is why our party made it clear that Governors are the party leaders in their respective states while Mr President is the Party leader in the country”.

The former Nasarawa State Governor disclosed that his committee received only one petition made by Senator Danjuma Goje but however noted that the petitioner was absent at the meeting.

“Unfortunately, it was the petitioner that failed to turn out for the Committee’s hearing but we do not want to be accused of not hearing the other party; as a committee we realized that it is illogical to clap with one hand if you want to be heard that is why we will give him fair hearing to listen to his claims later in Abuja before we reel out our position on the matter”.

“However, we do not want to lose anybody in the party that is why our mission is to solve those areas of conflict as quickly as possible in the interest of our party, democracy and Nigeria in general. ”

“We have a mandate to reconcile any perceived misunderstanding, grudges, or conflict and we are on course in ensuring that every member is given a fair hearing in the interest of the party’s unity.

Also commenting, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya said by statuses of the Committee members it is obvious the desired result of resolving disagreements among APC family across the federation will be achieved.

He expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting held with the reconciliation Committee, assuring them that All Progressives Congress in Gombe State under his stewardship will continue to wax stronger in the spirit of fairness to all the party stakeholders in the state.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya believes that because political parties are conglomeration of people with differences, there is always likelihood of having differences among members and whenever there are such differences there is need for a reconciliation Committee’s intervention.

“All Progressives Congress (APC) is one big family in Gombe state that is united and focused on delivering the demands of our party followers”.

Recall that the APC Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) had inaugurated a nine-member committee under the chairmanship of Abdullahi Adamu with the mandate to reconcile aggrieved members of the party sequel to the outcome of the party’s congresses.

The meeting was attended by Senators Saidu Ahmed Alkali, Bulus Amos; members of House of Representatives, Ex- Senators Joshua Lidani and Abdullahi Idris Umar; Chairman and Exco members of the APC; Speaker and members of Gombe State House of Assembly, party elders and other key stakeholders.

Nigeria: Show Us Evidence Of Borrowed Money -Wike Challenges FG

Wike
Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, south-south Nigeria

BY Joseph Edegbo :

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike says Nigeria has enormous resources, if well managed, can change, not only the fortunes of the country but the life of every Nigerian.

He has therefore, challenged the Federal Government to show evidence where it has deployed all the money borrowed from external creditors.

Governor Wike made the challenge at the inauguration of the Rumuola Flyover Bridge that was performed by the former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko on Thursday in Port Harcourt.

The governor stated that his administration is propelled by love and commitment to service, which is why it is working assiduously and deploying the State’s resources judiciously, for the good of Rivers people.

“It is very clear that governance is not by magic. It is all about commitment. It’s all about your love for your people and your country.

“This country has enormous resources to change the lives of our people. Nobody should give excuses. Like we would always say, if you don’t have it, you don’t have it.

“So, all these stories that you borrowed money from here, and there, let us see what the money is being used for. If we borrowed money, we are showing Rivers people what we used that money to do.”

Governor Wike said he is preoccupied with the duties of governance and rendering service to the people who elected him.

According to him, his best reply to the opposition is the evidence of the quality projects that his administration has continued to deliver.

It is clear to them, he said, that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) controlled state government has performed creditable well.

Aside the numerous roads completed and ongoing, Governor Wike explained that his administration has within two years period delivered nine flyover bridges, which are handled by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.

“This government has done well. This PDP government has done well.
Our contractor is Julius Berger Nigeria Plc. We are competing with federal government that is using Julius Berger. Ask them how much it is to pay Julius Berger.”

He further continued: “none of these flyovers cost us less than N7 billion. Now, the average of N7biilion into 9 and the other roads done by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC and the quality they give. I’m happy and proud to associate myself with a company that gives the best as far as construction is concerned. I can move about in this state and country proudly.”

Speaking further, Governor Wike warned criminal elements who steal manhole covers on major roads and on the flyovers bridges to desist from their nefarious activities.

He described those criminals and their sponsors as enemies of the state because they are sabotaging the good works that have been achieved to make motoring pleasurable with the State’s resources.

“Let me warn those who steal the cover of the manholes. You know when you take actions, people bring ethnic colouration. Those of you who are stealing the cover of manholes, if you like come from anywhere, if anybody want to sabotage us, we will tell you how saboteurs are treated.

“We cannot do this road construction and you come to sabotage us by stealing to disappoint us, to make people have accident.”

Governor Wike also spoke about the need for his successor to be one who will not only sustained the current pace of development but outperform him.

He pointed out that such person must rise above selfish pedestal and be ready to defend, and protect the interest of the State against all odds.

Performing the project inauguration, former governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko said that Governor Wike has proved himself worthy his sobriquet: “Mr. Project!”.

According to him, those who feel unsettled by Governor Wike’s words and actions cannot take away the fact that he conceives projects, plan projects, delivers projects because he loves projects.

“Some see governance or being in government as an end in itself, you have deployed your limitless energy, by these accomplishments, to demonstrate that governance is a means to an end; the improvement of the lives of our people.”

Dr. Mimiko also spoke about the need to restructure Nigeria because it is an imperative means to a just, more productive and more prosperous nation.

He noted that restructuring is also about policies and actions towards getting Nigerian children off the streets into schools for the right kind of education.

According to him, it is also about improved subnational accountability in tackling youth unemployment and general alienation and many more.

“It is also not about Niger Delta oil and gas alone. After all, with the present state of climate change consciousness and concomitant investment in renewables, fossil fuel may sooner than later become truly fossil and outdated.

“It is about ensuring that all our God-given minerals, e.g., Gold in Zamfara or Osun is optimally exploited for the people, and not unaccountably, by, and for a few elites and their rampaging foreign collaborators.

“It is about a decentralized security architecture that will ensure nimble, versatile, accountable and optimally responsive formations.”

Providing the description of the project, Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Elloka Tasie-Amadi said the Rumuola Flyover Bridge project that was awarded on the 2nd of July 2020 to Julius Berger Nigeria PLC was complete by August 2021.

Tasie-Amadi pointed out that within the period the civil works lasted, there were road closures, traffic diversions, grid locks, deployment of equipment and workers.

He also stated that there were inconveniences caused to commuters, support from many good people particularly the community, and of course payments to the contractors but all of that are over.

“This flyover measures 532m from Ramp to Ramp with the suspended section being 292m long. Service lanes on either side of the bridge are 8.3m wide and 858.4m long. The entire project is adorned with Street lighting and traffic control fixtures.

“The foregoing are all visible including the 24 piers under the bridge. (24 columns if you may).”

Tasie-Amadi said, before the project commenced, there was only a single carriage bridge which became grossly inadequate for the volume of traffic.

To address the situation, he said, a second bridge was built, service lanes completely reconstructed and expanded and all elements required to ease commute and pedestrian activities were incorporated into the project. That also included but not limited to refurbishment of the old bridge and adjoining streets.

“Please permit me to cease this opportunity to urge road users and the relevant agencies to ensure compliance with codes and strict adherence to road and traffic signs erected around the area, most notable amongst these are signs which make it unlawful to stop on the bridge and high speed lanes and which require that all commercial vehicles use only the service lanes. The bridge is essentially off limits to commercial vehicles.
