By Aderogba George

Faster Project of the Catholic Relief Services (CRS), an NGO, has advocated the adoption of HIV self-testing kit as an effective strategy in scaling-up HIV testing for epidemic response.

The Project Director, CRS, Dr Chizoba Mbanefo, said this at a one-day symposium on HIV Self- testing Programming (HIVST) in Nigeria, organised by Faster Project of the catholic Relief Services (CRS).

The theme of the event is tagged “HIVST Programming in Nigeria- The Journey so far”.

She said that the two year programme from 2019 to 2021 was designed to accelerate progress in paediatric HIV diagnosis and treatment in four countries.

She said the countries, which included Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia were identified due to its high unmet need for child and adolescent Antiretroviral Therapy (ART).

The Director said the HIV Self- testing services was one of the innovative strategies and approach required to increase uptake of HIV testing services especially for population with low access and higher risk of HIV.

“Nigeria is one of the leading countries in terms of HIV burden, so the programme was fashioned to increase access for children and adolescent who have HIV.

“To increase access for testing, for linkage to health facilities, initiation on ART and to ensure viral suppression.
“We also work with community volunteers in the hard reach communities in terms of how to guide adolescents and their parents on how to use the self-test kit,” she said.

She highlighted some of its achievement to include demand creation and service delivery, where FASTER, distributed 100,000 HIV self-test kits to clients across 282 service delivery such as health facilities, community pharmacies, traditional birth attendance among others.

She added that the project was implemented in conjunction with the U.S. Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) in seven states, including the FCT.

On her part, Mrs Sabina Aiki, a Senior Scientific Officer, Department of National AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) Federal Ministry of Health noted that it was very imperative for Nigeria to review it’ policy on HIV self-testing.

She said that an updated guidelines on HIV self-testing would redirect individuals mind who might want to carry out the test, adding that, the guidelines introduce in 2018 was long overdue for review.

“The guidelines introduce in 2018 is long overdue for review, a lot of things has change, a number of things has also come-in in HIV self- testing, new strategies has come in, we want to ensure that everything on HIV testing match the World Health recommendations and policy.

“With the new guidelines, we are working to ensure the testing happened in the community, we want people to be able to access HIV self-testing in community and also in the private sector,” she stressed.

Mr Harry Omoakhia, the brand manager, Oraquick HIV self-test kit, stated that his organisation had been undertaking the moderation of self- test kit for the past few years and had yielded good result for people who had use it.

Omicron Variant and Deride The Messenger Diplomacy, By Halima Imam

There is a heightened global trepidation over omicron, the new variant of the coronavirus that was first reported in South Africa. Researchers have said it could be the most infectious form of coronavirus and that it might even beat current vaccines, but most people say their predictions are too far flung. For the most of this year the World have been fighting off coronavirus variants that are all more efficient than the ‘bad guy’ from Wuhan. Covid19 have basically turned our planet into the scariest ‘frat house’ of them all. Just when we wanted to breathe a heavy sign of relief, scientists in South Africa came with ‘a bang’, they had discovered a variant that’s not just scary but ‘freaking scary’ and we are all freaked basically.

What’s most scary about this virus is that this is ‘its platinum hit’ yet. This virus is the 12th variant of the coronavirus and the 5th variant of concern (VOC). This variant might not be as scary as we all think because there’s tons of information that we don’t have about it yet, like when our bosses act like they made big changes to our salary and we later its just a raise slightly over a thousand naira with a bunch of rules that will make you work so much that your blood pressure ‘protests’.

On November 24, 2021, a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, B.1.1.529, was reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) and this new variant was first detected in specimens collected on November 11, 2021 in Botswana and on November 14, 2021 in South Africa. On November 26, 2021, WHO named the B.1.1.529 Omicron and classified it as a Variant of Concern (VOC). On November 30, 2021, the United States designated Omicron as a Variant of Concern, and on December 1, 2021 the first confirmed U.S. case of Omicron was identified. Omicron variant is the one to watch at the moment, scientists have speculated that, of all the other unnamed variants, omicron evolved faster and with more mutations, because according to them it likely originated in someone with a compromised immune system, particularly someone with HIV.

Omicron could turn out to be very nasty or just a false alarm, or maybe somewhere in between. Omicron has over thirty-two to fifty concerning mutations in its spike protein, it shares several key mutations with beta and gamma that makes them less vulnerable to vaccines. The antibodies that are generated from the vaccine usually target three regions on the spike protein and omicron sadly has mutations in all three of those regions, the mutations make it prone to spread faster by binding more tightly to the ACE-2 receptor and get into cells more easily by tweaking the furan cleavage site, because all these specific mutations, many of which are already known to be marks of badness and other variants that promote viral proliferation, viral spread and antibody resistance which is a bad news. Even though the genetic sequence of this virus is known, the technology to reliably predict how a virus’s behaviour will change based on that, including whether or not it can evade our current vaccines, that technology doesn’t exist, we can’t determine the virus’s behaviour based purely on genetic information.

Several countries have clamped down on international travel and most countries in Southern and other parts of Africa have been cut off from the other parts of the World. Japan have banned all foreign arrivals, Morocco halted all inbound flights and Israel closed its borders for two weeks. The United States, Brazil, Singapore, Poland Australia, and Indonesia are among countries to bar travellers from Southern African Nations where the variant was first reported.

The United Kingdom was first to place a travel ban on some African countries including Nigeria, their ‘justification’ was that they couldn’t afford to expose their citizens to the new variant, although Omicron had already spread to several countries in Europe, Asia and America, and eight other African countries that were banned hadn’t even confirmed the variant in their territories at the time, but Africa had to be ‘the scape goat’ for the United Kingdom and the rest of the Countries who put ‘knock on’ travel restrictions in place. Truth is, travel ban from South Africa and some other African countries translates simply to being ‘penalized’ for a variant that we are supposed to fight collectively. South African researchers did the right thing by coming forward with a new variant that was identified and instead of getting all the help that they need, the ‘big guys’ shut them out.

As far as the coronavirus is concerned, we are all in it together, and we all know that Africa wasn’t as badly hit by covid-19 as much as other parts of the World anticipated. The United States, Singapore, China and a few other countries had reported cases of local transmission of the virus and no one seemed to freight as much as they did when the news came from South Africa.

The economic implication of a travel ban especially in the festive period is a downer for an already ‘inflation infested’ economy. The international community and advanced nations must only work towards equitable distribution of vaccines to all, channel whatever aid they can give to countries on the African continent to target local vaccine production and health care subsidy and not crucify South Africa for sharing their findings with the World and in the process victimizing some other African countries.

NUJ To President Buhari: Sign Electoral Act Amendment Bill For Posterity

0
NUJ logo

By Joseph Edegbo :

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), says it has taken a critical look at the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment 2021 by the two chambers of the National Assembly particularly with regards to the Direct Party Primaries clause which has become a subject of controversy among members of the Governors Forum, political parties and the Federal Legislators.

A statement by the National President of the Union, Christ Isiguzo said having listened to the arguments for and against the Direct Party Primaries for political parties, the Union wishes to commend the 9th National Assembly for taking the bold steps in trying to fine tune the electoral Bill in a manner that would translate into giving the people the power to determine who should be their leaders as against imposition usually experienced through the indirect primaries where political godfathers are usually the sole determinants of winners without consideration for the people they desire to lead.

“We are however curious that some of the politicians that spend billions of Naira in purchasing votes at every election, are now complaining of high cost for Direct Party Primaries. It has to be stated in unambiguous terms, that no cost should be considered as too much in entrenching true and acceptable democracy in which the people are the real repository of power.

“The NUJ is particularly pleased to note that President MuhammaduBuhari had assured that having gone through a herculean task before getting to the office as President, he would hand over to Nigerians an electoral system that would be to the benefit of the generality of Nigeria and not for a few.

“The time has come for the President to demonstrate his promise by signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill before him to allow the people have a say in who becomes their leader right from the political party.

“Simply put, Direct Party Primaries afford all party members the opportunity to participate in the process of selection of candidates for elective offices. This singular exercise would specifically reduce to the barest minimum if not eliminate the prevalence of imposition of candidates often associated with money bags during Indirect Party Primaries by delegates who are known and easy to buy.

“Critical evaluation has indicated that Indirect Party Primaries have not helped the growth of democracy in Nigeria as political office holders see themselves as being far above their subjects whose mandate they claimed to be holding in trust by making it difficult to hold them accountable as a result of the faulty process which saw them through to the office.

“The National Assembly with the inclusion of Direct Party Primaries in the Electoral Amendment Bill 2021 awaiting the President’s assent, has empowered the people with the right to participate in governance. It is on this note that we passionately appeal to Mr. President not to turn his back on the people at this critical moment in our democracy. President Buhari should not deny the people this vital opportunity.

“The “Not too young to run” policy can only be made effective when the young population can fully participate in the selection process of their leaders as against the imposition of candidates and godfatherism in our political landscape. This singular act will not only produce competent leaders but will also steer the country to the path of prosperity.

“The NUJ strongly calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to discard all sorts of distractions from some self-serving politicians bent on influencing him not to sign the Electoral Amendment Bill into law.

“The President should allow posterity to remember him as one that restored power back to the people and not to be judged on the wrong side of history as he boldly steps towards strengthening the nation’s democracy and good governance”, the statement concludes.
