The watery attempt at having something tangible to say in response to words of wisdom from a concerned Rivers son typifies the lack of direction from their paymaster.
As he has been doing since 2015, a seasoned technocrat and turn around expert, Dr Dakuku Peterside in an interview admonished Governor Nyesom Wike over the rash way and manner he has been administering the state under his watch.
In the interview, Dr Peterside pointed out clearly what was not going well and even offered suggestions on the way forward for a state that is so rich but lagging behind in fundamental areas.
Not Even Governor Nyesom Wike has been able to respond, albeit with facts and figures, to the genuine concerns of Dr Dakuku Peterside on the state of affairs in Rivers.
With N3 trillion received in the six years, he said there was nothing on ground to justify such earnings by the Wike-led government, especially with primary and secondary education having virtually collapsed under Wike’s term. As for bursary to students in higher institutions, it looked like it never happened in Rivers history.
Unfortunately for Mr Amieyeofori, Wike has never bordered himself about having to fashion out a blueprint for the development of the state, hence the penchant for the governor to award contract from his breast pocket.
Since the author lacks the comprehension to decipher issues that border on governance, he would have known that Dakuku, in conscious effort to contribute to the growth and development of the state has publicly offered suggestions to the government on how to make life meaningful for the people.
In Rivers State Newspaper Corporation, publishers of The Tide newspaper, where the author last worked before he retired, no single employment has taken place in the last six years. Even worse, the newspaper is struggling to publish and was at a time, shut down for six months.
In the education sector, Wike’s administration has achieved less than 5% using key parameters of measuring progress in education. In many schools today, there is absence of teachers in core subjects like Mathematics, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Agriculture Science, Economics, among others. Teachers are not motivated, no teaching aid and no new infrastructural development.
Across virtually all local government areas, many primary schools have been shut down owing to lack of teachers, classroom blocks and teaching aids. Children who should be in primary schools are now at home, abandoned to their fate by a careless governor. The ones who were on scholarship overseas were withdrawn.
In Buguma, where Ibim Amieyeofori comes from, there is no functional primary healthcare hospital; neither are the public primary and secondary schools having full complement of teachers.
The Buguma Fish Farm, initiated, started and completed by the Amaechi’s administration to create employment and generate trade and commerce for the people of Kalabari land has been abandoned.
Rivers today is among the states in Nigeria with the highest unemployment rates largely due to an administration that lacks the creativity, policy direction and managerial acumen to engage Rivers youth.
All the feeble attempts by the Wike administration to create any form of decent employment have been shrouded in secrecy or an outright scam, a fact even acknowledged by the Information Commissioner, Paulinus Nsirim, who stated that applications were still been sorted out almost two years after Rivers youth were hoodwinked into applying for non-existing jobs.
Under former Governor Chibuike Amaechi administration, it took less than three months for over 13,000 people to be employed in a single day.
Rivers people are unanimous in their verdict of Governor Nyesom Wike’s administration so far. The balance sheet is entirely in deficit, which is not surprising to those who know him as lacking coherent vision.
Here is the score card of Wike so far: Education (P8), Agriculture (F9), Employment (F9), Primary Health Care (F9), Investment in Power Sector (F9), Employment of Teachers (F9), Workers Welfare (F9), Scholarship and Bursary (F9), Sanitation (F9), Environment (F9), Transport (F9), amongst other below par achievements.
We sympathise with the author who was invited to come and eat but it is obvious that he is not learning table manners or that he has not been given sufficient food to warrant his crying against a patriot like Dr Dakuku Peterside, who has consistently placed Rivers state above personal interest.

A youth-based organisation, Rivers Renaissance, in Port Harcourt, south-south Nigeria, says Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers State is still indebted to Minister of Transport, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi for his achievements in politics.
The group stated this while reacting to a statement credited to Gov Wike, where he said, Amaechi had frustrated his ministerial nomination during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
A statement by President General of the group, Dr. Dokubo Dan-Tamuno, said there was no iota of veracity in the Governor’s claim, saying rather than struggle to demonise the Minister, Gov. Wike should express gratefulness.
Wike while addressing the first convocation of Pamo medical University on Saturday, re-echoed that Amaechi frustrated his nomination as Minister under President Jonathan.
“Amaechi supported your second term bid as chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Council even in the face of opposition from the Obio-Akpor people. He supported your emergence as Deputy and later President of ALGON; made you his Chief of Staff (CoS) in defiance to your preference for Commissioner for Finance.
“He also nominated you for appointment as Minister. Even when Security agencies wrote negative report about you on grounds of financial malfeasance and patronage of cult groups among other sundry issues, he took it personal and ensured you were cleared. How do you speak ill of such a man with so much ingratitude?
“Your success story and climb on life’s perilous ladder can never be complete without Amaechi and if he (Amaechi) wanted to replace your nomination he could have easily done it especially with the initial reluctance by former President Jonathan in accepting your nomination.
“Rather than withdraw your nomination Amaechi stoically insisted that your nomination should be accepted at the risk of unsettling the former President. Remember that the former President initially questioned your nomination on the grounds that he did not know you.” the statement said.
The President General of Rivers Renaissance said Gov. Wike rather than use the opportunity of the event to market his government policy thrust and direction for the education sector in the State, he preferred to chase vainglory.
“Rather than use the convocation to tell the world about sustainable development initiatives for the education sector in the State (if there was any), he ended up de-marketing his own government. What a wasted opportunity,” Dr. Dan-Tamuno added.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has vowed to reject and resist the planned increase in the pump price of petrol by the Federal Government, describing it as extremely insensitive to the acute hardship being experienced by Nigerian workers and people
It therefore advices the Federal Government to promote local capacity to refine petroleum products for domestic use;
A communique issued at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, the NLC said it would organize Protest Rallies in all the 36 States of the Federation on 27th January 2022 which would culminate in the submission of protest letters to all the 36 State Governors.
Subsequently, a National Protest will take place on 1st February 2022 in Abuja.
The communique which was signed by the NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wanna and Emmanuel Ugboaja said in case government decides to announce new petrol prices before the proposed protests, the protest will kick off instantly and without any other further notice in evestate of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory
While the communique condemned the soaring inflation, increase siege of insecurity, privatisation/ concession of many public assets in the country, the NLC demands Buhari to sign the 2021 Electoral Amendment Bill into law.
It noted with concern the hyper-inflation in the prices of basic goods and services, especially essential commodities including cooking gas and building materials such as cement.
It urged the government to adopt effective economic policies
to halt the inflationary trend as it presents additional pressure on the lean income of Nigerian workers and other citizens, explaining that it has made life terribly unbearable for the poor masses of our country.
“c. Insecurity
The NEC Reasoned:
– That the crises of insecurity in Nigeria has continued to deteriorate since its last meeting; and
– That the parlous state of insecurity apart from scaring away potential local and foreign investors from the Nigerian economy has also unleashed an unquantifiable social
dislocation and crisis in the country including food insecurity, widespread hunger and mass destitution.
“The NEC, in light of the foregoing, RESOLVED
a. The Federal Government should consider the recommendations and policy initiatives gleaned from the NLC National Summit on Peace and Security and National Roundtable on Social Protection Cover in developing a National Plan of Action against Insecurity in Nigeria; and
“. The Federal Government should adopt a multistakeholder approach and innovative non-kinetic intervention model towards a achieving a sustainable solution to the crises of insecurity in Nigeria.
d. Industrial Concerns
“The NEC Noted:
– The Plans by the National Assembly and Nigeria Customs Service to introduce excise duties on carbonated drinks manufactured in Nigeria;
That such plans will only exacerbate the prevailing hyperinflation of essential goods especially food consumables, lead to decline in sales, job losses in the food sub-sector and increased hardship for ordinary Nigerians.
– Plans for the privatization of Nigeria’s railways, public healthcare facilities and concession of Nigeria’s major international airports.
The NEC, therefore, RESOLVED:
” That the executive arm of government at the federal level
and the National Assembly should work together with Organized Labour and manufacturers in the sub-sector for a win-win solution;
“That plans to privatize and concession prime national assets would be tantamount to ‘State Capture’ of the commonwealth. The NEC urged government and promoters of the privatization and concession plans to learn from the misadventure of the power sector
privatization which instead of improving the lives of the ordinary Nigerian have increased the level of suffering and hardship faced by the Nigerian masses; and
“. To REJECT the concession of Nigeria’s four major airports and the privatization of Nigeria’s prime national assets including the Transmission Company of Nigeria and other assets billed through legislative actions for privatization
e. Electoral Reform
The NEC Considered:
-” The current push for broader electoral reform especially with
respect to recent demands by the Congress for President
“Muhammadu Buhari to sign into law the 2021 Electoral Act
Amendment Bill passed by the National Assembly; and
” The CWC considers the provisions in the 2021 Electoral Act
“Amendment Bill especially the provisions for electronic
voting and direct political party primaries as progressive and
capable of delivering inclusive, transparent and credible
elections in Nigeria.
“The NEC, therefore, RESOLVED
– To call on President Muhammadu Buhari to pass the 2021 Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law particularly given that he has less than 2 days to sign the bill into law; and – To call for even broader and deeper electoral reform including the establishment of Electoral Offences Commission, the democratization of the appointment of the national leadership of the INEC, the adoption of Proportional
Representation in our laws and Diaspora Voting.
f. Charter of Demands by Nigerian Workers
The NEC ADOPTED:
– The Charter of demands by Nigerian Workers which core thrusts include the demands for basic social, economic and political rights that fulfil the ideals of citizenship,
improve the lot of the working class and actualize the dream of nationhood.
Actualizing the thrusts of the Charter would facilitate the conferring of decency and dignity to the average Nigerian worker and citizen in line with the provisions of Chapter 2 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution:
Guarantee of quality and affordable healthcare as a fundamental right of every Nigerian and a core justiciable
responsibility of the State. Provisions to be made for the attainment of Universal Health Coverage for every Nigerian.
– Free and quality primary-junior secondary education. Wellrounded and affordable public senior secondary and tertiary education. Free technical and vocational training for Nigerian youths desirous for a career in artisanal trade.
– Efficient, responsible and sustainable, extraction, refining,
processing and marketing of all of Nigeria’s natural resources
“in ways that maximizes value chain potentials, enhances technological development and fosters inclusive growth.
-” Government should ensure the creation of an enabling environment for the development of a robust local economy, stable Naira, and industrialization for creation of mass jobs.
– Guarantee of the right to life, physical safety and welfare of every Nigerian must be undertaken as the primary responsibility of government. must be protected at all times.
– Promotion of effective social protection cover for Nigerian
workers and vulnerable segments of the population especially the poorest of the poor, the youth, the disabled,
women and other vulnerable groups in our country.
“- Evolution of inclusive and transparent electoral system
“The NEC pursuant to actualizing the Charter of Demands, RESOLVED
-” That the Congress would convene a National Retreat for its
Leadership on Engagement with Partisan Politics in the third
week of January 2022 in Abuja.

President Muhammadu Buhari was represented by Borno Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum at Niger Republic’s 63rd Independence Day celebration.
The Presidential celebration event took place Saturday, in Diffa town of Diffa province with President of Niger Republic, Muhammad Bazoum leading the National celebrations.
Niger commemorates its National days on 18th of December every year with ceremonies attended by world leaders and their representatives.
Every year, the celebration is hosted on rotational basis at regional capitals across the country with this year’s hosted in Diffa.
Governor Zulum joined dignitaries who included the Prime Minister of Chad, Albert Pahimi Padacke, the Speaker of Niger Republic’s National Assembly, Seidou Umar, Nigerien Minister of defence, Alkasum Indatou, and Governor of Diffa Province, Isa Lameen.
Highpoint of this year’s celebration was the conferment of National honours to 20 personalities, amongst them, the Governor of Diffa Province, Isa Lameen, who was decorated with Niger’s National honour, Officer Dan’s l’ordre national du Niger.
The President of Niger Republic, Muhammad Bazoum, who conferred the honour also decorated 19 other recipients amongst them, military personnel, political leaders and traditional leaders.
Before representing President Buhari at the Nigerien National day, Governor Zulum was in Damasak where he distributed irrigation packs to 2000 resettled farmers before moving into Diffa which shares border with Damasak in the Nigerian side of Lake Chad shores.
Governor Zulum was accompanied on the presidential trip by the Senator Representing Northern Borno, Abubakar Kyari, Borno Assembly Speaker, Abdulkarim Lawan, two members representing Abadam and Mobbar, whose constituencies share borders with Niger Republic, as well as Borno’s Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs.

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum was on Friday, in Damasak, headquarters of Mobbar local Government in northern Borno.
The Governor distributed packages containing varieties of agricultural tools and implements to over 2,000 farmers for dry season farming activities.
Each pack consist of a water pump with accessories, NPK fertilizer, non-selective herbicides, 50,000 liters of petrol, 2,000 liters of engine oil and rice seedlings.
The benefiting farmers were resettled after their displacement from parts of Mobbar LGA. They also include farmers from neighboring Abadam local Government which is under reconstruction ahead of safe resettlement.
Accompanied by the Senator representing Borno North, Abubakar Kyari and Speaker, Borno State House of Assembly, AbdulKarim Lawan, the Governor said the intervention was part of sustained efforts to create jobs, revive and boost irrigation farming towards the recovery of agriculture and increase potential for food sufficiency in the State.
In addition to distributing the irrigation packs, Governor Zulum directed the release of funds for the construction of 500 tube-well boreholes to increase access to water for irrigation activities.
Before leaving Damasak, Zulum inspected a massive water project being constructed by Senator Abubakar Kyari as part of his constituency interventions in Damasak.
The water project valued at N450m has a combined capacity of producing 950,000 liters of water with three deep aquifers, and two middle aquifer water sources with reticulation pipelines to connect townships.
Governor Zulum commended Senator Kyari for the laudable project which
will have direct positive impact on the lives of the people.
Zulum’s delegation to Damasak included not just Senator Kyari, and Speaker Lawan but also former Minister of Agriculture, Abubakar Tijjani, Members of Borno Assembly representing Mobbar and Abadam, and the State’s Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs.
I watched Governor Wike spend more than one hour of precious time on three national television networks paid for with Rivers taxpayers’ money responding incoherently to an interview I granted earlier . It was a one hour that exposed his ignorance and made Rivers State Government an object of ridicule before the whole world. Gov Wike did not fail to prove right those who say Rivers State does not deserve a comedian and an Area Boy as Governor. He literally went to the mud, his natural territory, and muddled up serious issues of statecraft.
Wike’s main argument is that I said the budget of a state or an organization is indicative of the aspiration and performance of the economy. He wondered how a doctorate degree holder can say such a thing. First is to admit I said so. Let me repeat it, that the budget of a Local Government, State or Nation is the most important document year on year and it encapsulates the hopes and dreams of the people. It reflects the capacity, imaginative thinking, ambition and direction of the government. I would not bother to dignify Wike with a reply but will set the record straight for posterity sake.
A budget is an expression of the economic history and aspirations of any organization including a state. It is painful to school the Governor of a state, let alone Rivers State, about the basic import of the financial estimates of public economic activities; that, like the world over, public income and expenditure estimates are the bedrock of economic activities. He may like to know that the revenue estimates are an indication of the size and health of the private sector as captured in taxation; that the expenditure estimates and history are an indication of the growth trend and developmental trajectory of a state or nation.
I was more embarrassed when I read the statement he authorized his Press Secretary to issue, that one has to respond at the cost of engaging Wike who has expressed clear ignorance in the importance of the document his entire government designs and implements. What is clear here is that by these statements, we can now confirm that Wike does not know what he claims to be doing in the government house. No wonder there are ‘seven’ bridges that solve nothing on the same road in nearly seven years of clear ignorance and mismanagement.
If the State’s income and expenditure pattern is not the core indicator of your economic life, Wike should come and tell us what then is. It is noteworthy that in his confessions of ignorance about the import of the budget, Wike did not offer one reason why the budget is not an indication of economic health as I asserted. Budgets as I stated in my interview are supposed to be a reflection of the government’s economic, social and policy direction and that from what I have seen and read Wike is taking Rivers State nowhere.
We now know why things are so deplorable in Rivers State after trillions of Naira expensed over the nearly sssSseven inglorious years of Wike so far. Rivers people should note that, at least, Wike has confirmed he does not know why (and how) his government prepares her budget and its impact on the Rivers economy. Now we know why the State has been rudderless because it has been in the hands of a confessed economic novice like Wike. We can now understand why private investment is completely absent or is sparing. It is because public investment is unplanned, not targeted, and uncoordinated, and that growth is impossible in such a “boys-o-yeah” or “breast pocket” approach to public policy. Though painful, we take solace in the knowledge that this ill-wind shall soon pass for good and we can restart the growth and development of our state through appropriate budgeting.
I am happy Gov Wike agreed that it has been six years of no real governance in Rivers State. Since he did not challenge this assertion, I will not bother as my position was so clearly stated in the interview under reference. He made reference to courts being shut down for almost two years. You can now see how an accidental Governor addresses serious matters of statecraft. Wike also talked about the road to my hometown of Opobo which he played less than 5 percent role in the completion as an indicator of good governance. We are unlucky to have a joker as a state Governor and I am confident Rivers people will also come out of this nightmare that forces of darkness foisted on us. I rest my case.e
