Nigeria: Centre Trains 80 Females on Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence

  By Justina Auta

The National Centre for Women Development (NCWD) on Wednesday trained 80 females on cyber security, Artificial Intelligence (AI), among other topics, under its ICT and Mechatronics Skills Acquisition Programme.

The Director-General of the centre, Dr Asabe Vilita-Bashir, disclosed this during the closing ceremony of the skill acquisition programme in Abuja.

She said that the training would bridge the gender technology gap through innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship.

She added that the training was necessitated by the need to ensure gender mainstreaming technological activities, achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and enhance skills of young females in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

She noted that the training was also in line with lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.

She noted that “the graduates were exposed to various skills in ICT, mechatronics design and development, Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, car engine architecture, diagnoses and troubleshooting of faults in cars.

“It is worthy to note that mechatronics specialists work in the fields of cyber security, telecommunications, computer science, automotive engineering, robotics, Artificial Intelligence and consumer products and packaging.”

The NCWD boss added that the graduates were also taught how they could access startup funds from CBN, Bank of Industry, among others, to enable them to succeed in their various careers.

She said each of the trained women would be given a brand new car diagnostic tool, a stipend for transportation, and a Trade Test 3 Certificate to enable them to perform well in the sector.

Mr Morrison Udobong, the ICT Director, NCWD, said the 10-day training was aimed at educating the women, who were

drawn from the 36 states of the federation in mechanical and electronic systems using computerised programming.

He said “what we did was to show the women different devices that have these technologies and how to design and build it.

“We were able to dismantle car engine and explain to the students how it works and relate it to mechatronics parts and diagnose fault using those devices.

“We also went beyond that on how to use Artificial Intelligence, machine learning in programming these devices.”

Some of the women told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the training had exposed them further to the potential inherent in the sector.

They added that it had challenged stereotypes, fought gender bias and gave them an insight on how to succeed in a male-dominated career, especially in diagnosing car faults, artificial intelligence and cyber security. (NAN)

Nigeria: Foundation Sensitises FCT Community on GBV

Nigeria: Foundation sensitises FCT community on GBV

By Justina Auta

The Girls Act of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) on Wednesday organised a football match to sensitise Waru community in the FCT on ending Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

The event was organised in collaboration with the Strong Enough Girls Empowerment Initiative as part of activities to commemorate the 16 Days of Activism against GBV.

Ms Linda Raji, the Programme Officer of Strong Enough Girls Empowerment Initiative, said the event was to create more advocacy on human rights, ending GBV and involvement of all stakeholders to eliminate the practice.

“ This is us trying to catch them young and change their orientation and the different forms of GBV so that they can know and do better so that they can defend girls and girls also defend boys.

“At the end get boys and young men involved in ending violence against women and girls because the lasting effects it has on survivors is horrible as it leaves a lifetime of trauma, shame, guilt or stereotype,’’ she said.

Raji stressed the need for girls to feel safe anywhere irrespective of their dressing or where they are, calling on men and young boys to protect and defend them, where the need arise.

She added that the youths would be sensitised on toxic masculinity, as part of the event by enlightening them on using their strength to protect and defend instead of hurt the other gender.

“So the role of sensitisation is very important because once you inform somebody they will now understand and do better. Then we will also be talking about consequences of rape, acts of rape and social harassment.

“They need to know about VAPP Act, NAPTIP and Sexual Offender’s Register.

“They need to know that there is a Sexual Offender’s Register that they wouldn’t want their name to get in their because once their name gets in their life becomes difficult for them,’’ she said.

She added that the girls would also be provided with referral services in case of any form of violence.

Also, Ms Edith Babarinde, the Coordinator, Adolescent Youths Programme, stressed the need for men to respect women, as well as protect them from any form of violence and abuse.

She added that some men were also victims of violence, hence the need for all to join hands in ridding the society of the menace.

“Some men have no regard for women and do whatever they feel they can do without much regard because the girls don’t have voice because they are shy when they say they are raped or beaten.

“They feel shy about what other women will talk about that makes them go into their shell and don’t want to come out to say it.

“Men are also victims especially in school. There are cases of boys been raped through the anus, and they don’t come out to tell the world,’’ she said.

“ My Advise to men is to give their respect and they should regard them as part of them and also they should not molest women because she cannot come out to talk and should not take advantage of them.”

On her part, Ms Deborah Samuel, member of the Girls Act, said the football match was a platform for both boys and girls to interact and be sensitised on the ills of GBV and the appropriate authorities to seek help.

“We are here to advocate and also speak out to reduce the violence in the society.

“And the way we can do that is through such events to advocate and inform the boys that you don’t need to harm girls and it is not right to do so. We should respect each other,’’ she urged.

While flagging off the event, the traditional ruler of Waru community, Mr Marku Gamazhi, frowned at the increasing cases of GBV in the community, calling on men to care and protect women, instead of violating them.

Gamazhi, represented by a cabinet member, Mr Danlami John, said: “We need to educate our children, especially girls and boys to know that violence cannot bring development in the community.

“I feel sad when girls are raped, I feel happy on the need to educate the people and train them well. We need to train our children so that they will know the effect of violence.

“My advice to men and boys is to respect women because the women deserve all the love and care they can get from men,’’ he said.

Other highlight of the event was the friendly football match between girls from the Girls Act and Waru boys, which ended 2-1 in favour of the Waru boys, and distribution of sanitary pad. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Nigeria: Zulum Meets Foreign NGOs, CSOs, Explains Closure Of Camps, Restriction On Food Aid

0

BY Joseph Edegbo :

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum on Tuesday met with International and Local Non-Governmental Organizations, as well as civil societies during which he once again explained the State Government’s decision for closure of IDP camps and restrictions place of food aid in resettled communities.

The meeting came at a time Governor Zulum has released billions of Naira, distributed to 115,000 safely resettled IDPs in 11 communities. Amongst them, each household made up of a husband, wife, and few children were given N200,000, while widows were given N150,000 each with large quantum of food. The intervention was meant for IDPs who have been given newly built houses and reconstructed homes, to use as livelihoods through operating small businesses, while a committee was set up to regularly monitor their progresses, and also deploy food aide intervention where the need arises. Zulum wanted the resettled IDPs to be supported in growing businesses as sustainable means of livelihoods, rather than lining them up every day and taking their pictures during distribution of food rations.

Zulum’s meeting with the iNGOs included the UN representatives, and it was facilitated by the Borno State’s Agency for Coordination of Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Response (BACSDAHR), which coordinates and monitors the activities of all humanitarian and developmental partners, including international and national non-governmental organizations (iNGOs/NNGOs) and civil society/community-based organizations (CSOs/CBOs) operating in Borno State. The meeting held at the State’s secretariat in Maiduguri.

While addressing the humanitarian partners, Zulum after expressing gratitude to the partners, said: “You are all aware of the (horrible) situation in the IDP camps, and the conditions of people in these IDP camps in the State, the menace of increasing drug abuse, prostitution, Gender Based Violence, increased risk of epidemics like cholera and meningitis, as well as increased risk of COVID 19. You are all aware that Muna camp for example is adjudged to be one of the worst camps in the world.

In terms of amenities, it is a camp where many of you would not want to keep your dog or a pig” Zulum said.

He added that in Borno, “people living in IDP camps are tired, and many decided that they wanted to go back to their communities. For example, people from Nganzai decided to move by themselves, people from Damasak moved from the camps in Niger by themselves, and we were told with facts that people were determined to go back and restart their lives with or without Government”.

The Governor explained three options were proposed over camp closure.

“In line with the Borno State Resettlement Plan, and the Return Strategy as agreed by the Government and our partners, we set out to voluntarily return and resettle our people where security permits.

In the voluntary resettlement and return efforts, we offered three options for our brothers and sisters:

1. People can leave the camp and go into Maiduguri township, and we give them money to rent house for a year in addition to food that will last them about 3 months. They can enrol for our SME Micro credit grant program for SMEs.

2. People can leave the camp, and safely go back to the newly built houses in their LGA headquarters or villages, where the military has given us security clearance and other civil security agencies are ready to deploy civil security

3. People can also choose to remain in an IDP camp in which case, we move them to another camp, merged to give way to the return of public services. In some of these camps such as the Mohammed Goni College of Legal and Islamic Studies (Mongolis), the camp resumed back to its original function as a school and the NYSC camp returned to its National Youth Service camp status.

Camp Merger is an Internationally recognised practice” Zulum said.

… Says only 11 communities restricted on aide

Also in his address to humanitarian partners, Governor Zulum explained while humanitarian workers were encouraged to continue supporting IDPs in camps still in existence, the Government placed restrictions of food aide in 11 communities which were rebuilt with the involvement of some foreign humanitarian and development partners, including the UN, after the communities were identified as safe for civilian reoccupation.

“There are still thousands of people in many IDP camps across the State that need help, and we need you to continue to work in these camps where you have been working before. We do not wish to create new camps where they do not exist. What is needed is to support people, build resilience, and livelihood” Zulum said.

The Governor listed the 11 communities to include Ajiri, Kalari and Ngom in Mafa LGA, Kawuri in Bama, Baga town, and Cross Kyawa in Kukawa, Shuwari in Jere, Ngoshe in Gwoza, Marte town in Marte, Wulgo Town in Ngala, Gubio Town in Gubio, and Magumeri Town in Nganzai LGA.

He said: “These newly built houses, where people are resettled with food and non- food items, and capital to start their livelihoods are what we call resettlement communities. This is where people are being brought back to pick up the pieces of their lives and start economic activities and have a life of dignity where they have some sort of social amenities and give better upbringing to their children” Zulum said.

“These are the places we are saying you should leave people alone to settle down, reflect on what they have gone through in the last 10 years, plan their future and the future of their families and begin a process of rebuilding their lives in dignity. These are the places we asking you not to go and make people continue to queue up for food that they can acquire for themselves, and where there are difficulties, the Government itself will step in and provide” He added.

“What the Government is asking you to do is to let people live in dignity and allow adults to assume the responsibilities they all crave to have and bring up their children with dignity. What we are saying is you should not take people living in their houses with their children, out to queue up for rations of food – it erodes their dignity as human beings and takes away the opportunity to teach their children the value of hardwork which is a unique human attribute” the Governor maintained.

… Says Govt monitors resettled communities

The Governor also explained that “the Borno State Government has set up a Monitoring Team under the Chairmanship of Engr Bukar Talba, the Commissioner of Agriculture.

This Team is constantly monitoring the activities and progress being made in the resettled Communities. The LGA Chairmen are constantly giving feedback, and where there are issues, the Government steps in to address these issues, including supply of food as our primary responsibility.

For example, since the resettlement started, Government has distributed food in all the locations, with the last being yesterday (Monday, December 21) at Ngoshe in Gwoza LGA” but noted that interventions are done in ways that won’t undermine resilience.

The meeting was attended by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Sustainable Development, Partnerships and Humanitarian Response, Dr. Mairo Mandara and the Adviser on Security, Brigadier General Abdullahi Sabi Ishaq (Rtd).

The Icing on Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s Cake, By Lamela U. Lakorok

Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state, Nigeria (Credit: Ripples)

As we draw close to the end of the year, we reflect on the blessings and challenges we have experienced. We do so in complete gratitude to God, knowing that our wellbeing subsists in the providence of a divine God. We extend our condolences to those who have lost members of their families or property due to natural disasters or manufactured evil. We live in an imperfect world, full of misfortunes and uncertainties. The callous and mediocre leadership of Gov Inuwa exacerbates such troubles in the state.

UNICEF’s last month’s grim and sobering report confirms that Gombe state is 74.6% poor. The statement is a wake-up call to all citizens to play their roles in reviving Gombe as an economic powerhouse in Nigeria. We must each hold to integrity, respect the rule of law, and encourage innovation in our young people. We are willing to work with our political leaders, business entrepreneurs, religious leaders, and non-governmental organizations to effect changes and development. We also call on Gov. Inuwa to reflect on his style of administration and take advantage of the enormous resources of Gombe state within and without Nigeria. His current model does not bode well for the masses and will only destroy the legacies of his predecessors. What a tragedy that our children’s future is gloomy because of the lack of visionary leadership. His incompetence is only surpassed by the sheep-like behavior of some people whose God is their stomach. Therefore, we call on the Gombe state Legislature to show some bones and act as an equal member of the three arms of government. They must curtail the excesses of the governor and bring some sanity to the financial mismanagement.

While Gov. Inuwa parades himself as a demi-god in the state, we continue to seek recourse in the court of law. We believe in the rule of law and the judicial system as the instrument of justice. We have seen justice catch up with Justice Pindiga, vindicating Justice Beatrice and the evil he perpetrated against her. We will see justice prevail against Gov. Inuwa’s mistreatment of innocent Tangale sons and daughters. Justice will prevail for HRH Dr. Musa Idris Maiyamba in due course. We shall never surrender our sovereignty to an errant zealot. Justice will stay for the poor workers discharged unceremoniously so the governor can siphon their salaries to his pet projects. We call on the former executive governors of the state to use their prestige and influence as men of integrity to salvage our government from total anarchy.

In this vein, we call on Mallam Danladi Maishanu to stop parading himself as Mai Tangle and desist from visiting Tangale towns. The case of Mai Tangle is officially in court, and it demands that he respects the court order. Furthermore, his recent visits to Tanglang and Tal intimidated our people, resulting in security concerns for Tangale land. His sycophant called Simon Lamiya, who parades himself as Tangale Community Development Association (TCDA) Chairman, is an imposter in the manner of Maishanu. No Tangale person recognizes him, and he is impersonating the TCDA leadership. He is fake and a disgrace to the Tangale people. We call on all well-meaning people to abstain from identifying with the man. He is as useless to Tangale as Babaji Babadidi.

If anyone doubts the divisiveness of Gov. Inuwa, please think about the recent election of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) leadership in the state. What has the state to do with the election of religious organization leaders? Yet, the governor shamelessly went to the media and announced what he had chosen as leaders of CAN. The man is in over his head. Yet, we have not heard the Legislature or Judiciary call him to order in these callous acts. We know that his intentions are for division in the state, just like he sowed the seed of discord in Tangale land. Therefore, we call on those ordained ministers who are falling for the deceit of the governor to disavow the relationship and distance themselves from this atrocity. CAN has elected its leaders; let us pray for unity among Christians and Muslims. We appeal to Gombe District Church Council (DCC) to investigate the involvement of Mr. Babaji Babadidi in the intentional intrusion of the state in church matters. If it is true that he was involved in the process, he should be disciplined accordingly.

In the spirit of the Christmas celebration of peace on earth through the birth of the Messiah, we call on Tangale people to exhibit the olive leaf to their neighbors. We are a tolerant community, and we must respect other religions and their dietary laws. While everyone should exercise their religious and cultural liberties, we must do so with love and respect for the other. The Apostle Paul says, “everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. No one should seek his own welfare, but rather his neighbor’s” (1 Cor 10:23-24). He made this statement in the context of dietary regulations. Therefore, we appeal to those celebrating the holidays to exercise restraint and be careful to honor the intent of the season in word and deed.

Finally, let us remember that we have found ourselves in uncertain times in Gombe state. We have the opportunity to overcome religious differences and seek to build a better society for our posterity. Inuwa Yahaya is a mortal being, and his days are numbered. Soon he will vacate his position, but humanity remains to the end of time. Therefore, let us disavow those who sow the seed of discord in our community. We know them by name. Some are Christians, and some are Muslims. They thrive in causing divisions because it is the only way they know to survive. We are fully aware of the divisiveness inspired by the Fawu family. However, we also know of the same caused by Babaji Babadidi and Simon Lamiya. The community should ostracise these people because their actions result in losing lives and division. They are the icing on Gov. Inuwa Yahaya’s cake.

We wish all our Christian brothers and sisters a very Merry Christmas. May we remember the reason for the season and proclaim peace to all. Therefore, be mindful of activities that do not promote peace and be watchful for invaders who seek to cause havoc and destruction of lives and property. Furthermore, we encourage our youth to be vigilant and take responsibility for the community’s wellbeing. Finally, we want to wish the people of Gombe state a prosperous new year.

By Joseph Edegbo:

The Arewa Consultative Forum has said that it would like to put on record its total disapproval, frustration and anger agaisnt what appears to be an endless orgy killings in Northern Nigeria.

The ACF was irked by
the latest incidence in Giwa Local government of Kaduna state where 38 innocent citizens were hacked to death.

Quoting Samuel Aruwan, the State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs which says many houses, trucks, cars and food crops were distroys during the attacks, the ACF’s Spokesman, Emmanuel Yawe in a statement stressed the need for Government to show more empathy and sympathy in such grave security breaches.

He said while the ACF joins the Governor of Kaduna and the President of Nigeria in consoling those who suffers loses during the latest attack, both the Federal and State Governments should show “more empathy and sympathy in such grave security breaches

“Nothing stops the President and a State governor from visiting such places.

“We sadĺy note that he has never felt it necessary to do so. In fact following his example, not one governor has done so except Governor Zulum of Borno.

“Just a few days ago also in UBA Askira in Borno, where 10 people were killed and uncountable numbers taken away.

“The people affected by these savage attacks are thus left to think that their lives dont count.
‘The President and the northern governors are unwittingly creating the impression that only their lives, those of their immediate family members and their offices matter.

President Buhari’s Visit To Lagos Not For Book Launch — Garba Shehu

0
President Buhari

By Joseph Edegbo :

Senior Spec lolial Assistant To the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu has defended President Buhari’s recent visit to Lagos.

His defence in a statement, followed criticisms from certain quarters accusing the President of been there for book launch, amid heightened insecurity in certain part of the country with loss of lives.

But, according to the Presidential Aide, President Buhari was in Lagos primarily to launch Naval defence ship and other armaments to improve the country’s military capabilities, during which he graced the launch of an autobiography of Bisi Akande.

Garba Shehu therefore advised critics of the Lagos visit to stop trivializing the visit.

HERE UNDER IS THE FULL TEXT OF GARBA SHEHU’S STATEMENT

On 9th December in Lagos, President Muhammadu Buhari launched a made- in-Nigeria naval defence ship, NNS Oji, and inducted other vital military assets that improve the country’s capabilities to fight increased piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. With the waters off the coast of Nigeria seeing increased attacks – with 35 cases in 2020 – these new naval ships enter service at the most opportune time.

Designed by Nigerians and built by Nigeria’s Naval Dockyard, the ships are the largest military vessels ever produced domestically. Key to President Buhari’s commitment to self-reliance as a nation and determination to build Nigeria into a manufacturing power, the ships pave the way for construction over time of larger more capable warships. In the future, Nigeria will move to become no more an arms importer to a defence exporter.

In addition, the President surveyed and inaugurated a naval helicopter that will join the new vessels in scouting for and countering piracy that impedes security and trade.

While in Lagos the President also graced the launch of an autobiography by Bisi Akande – a leader who played a crucial role in keeping democratic opposition to military rule alive, and later a critical place in the development and ultimate unity of that opposition to create today’s APC.

Without visionaries such as Bisi Akande, the corrupt PDP and its acolytes who have done so much to strip our nation of its wealth, stunt its growth, and subject it to derogation abroad would still be in office.

But, of course, those in the PDP who have nothing positive or new to add to the debate about the future of the nation seek to trivialise the President’s Lagos visit: they choose to ignore the crucial launch of the naval vessels; they suggest the primary reason for going to Lagos was to attend a book launch.

They try to make further mileage by claiming the President should not have attended given the attack by bandits elsewhere in the country that same day.

Should the president not have launched the naval ships the day after that attack? Should he listen to the PDP who feign concern for those affected by banditry when they did nothing to combat it for decades – not on land or at sea? Should our famously austere President not attend a book launch of his friend and fellow democratic opposition veteran when it coincided with a visit to Lagos to tend the affairs of state?

Through their attacks, the PDP reveal their priorities. Of course, for decades, as the PDP enjoyed their decadent parties at others’ expense, the navy and the armed forces rotted through negligence.

It is noted they have not criticised the President for boosting the country’s seaborne defence capacity. Instead, they only manage to make the attack personal. It reveals the chasm of difference between a president who cares for the country while managing to show courtesy to his comrades – and the opposition who corrupted the country through the sharing out of its wealth while celebrating and splashing about stolen public money.

Sadly, these opportunistic opposition elements, in a desperate search for political points, have dragged respected religious leaders into the discussion, feeding them misleading information who have in turn used this distorted picture to blackpaint the President in the eyes of gullible and innocent members of the public.”
