By Monday ocheja

The Onu Idaka in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Chief Abdul Egene has paid homage to His Royal Majesty, the Attah Igala, Matthew Alaji Opaluwa who ascended the throne of his forefathers recently.

The Chief was accompanied by elders from Adige clan, Emewe, Abocho and Idaka as well as those from other parts of the Igala Kingdom who also traced their origin to Idah over 3,000 years ago during the reign of Attah Ayegba Oma-Idoko.

Chief Egene thanked the ruling House for a peaceful selection process and atmosphere prevailing in Idah and the entire Igala kingdom during the period.

This, he observed, was uncommon in parts of the country where such chieftaincy affairs occur.

The Onu Idaka presented Kolanut to Attah in royalty, as custom and traditions demand.

Receiving the Onu and his entourage, His Royal Majesty, Mathew Opaluwa prayed for the chief and entire people of Idaka chiefdom.

He reminded the subjects of the beads of Ayegba Oma-Idoko being worn by the Onu, hence the need for them to be of good behaviour and law abiding for peace and progress to reign in the community in particular, and Igala kingdom, as a whole.

Nigeria: It’s Hypocritical To Ignore Electoral Act And Sign An Unimplementable 2022 Budget– Wike

0

By Joseph Edegbo :

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has said it is hypocritical for President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the heavily padded and unimplementable 2022 budget passed by the National Assembly, but declined assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

The governor said the speed at which the President signed the 2022 budget which he had described as unimplementable was curious and smacks of insensitive to the plight of ordinary Nigerians.

Governor Wike stated this when he paid a New Year visit to the Enugu State Governor, Rt. Hon. Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in his home town, Orba in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

“Look at Mr. President the other day while he was signing the budget, he said the budget is unimplementable. But he went on and signed what is unimplementable. A budget that will determine the state of the economy, the progress of this nation, and the President knew this thing can’t work and he signed it. Then the Electoral Act, he said he will not sign it because direct primaries is too expensive.

“What concern me with party primaries. What concerns the poor people with party primaries? The one that concerns poor man, business man, how to grow the economy, you signed it, knowing too well that it will not work.”

Governor Wike, who opined that the APC-led federal government has failed Nigeria, urged the people of Enugu to speak out against the poor governance the country is experiencing. He further advised them to join forces with well meaning Nigerians to salvage the country.

“You must join the rest of Nigerians. Nigeria is dying. Will you be here to see Nigeria die? Is it the kind of Nigeria that people like Nnamdi Azikiwe fought for? A Nigeria that when you wake up, what you will hear is 20 people have died, 42 people have been kidnapped, 100 people have been abducted. Everyday death, death.”

The Rivers State governor said he was in Enugu to felicitate with Governor Ugwuanyi before the commencement of work in the new year in view of his brotherly love towards him.

He described Governor Ugwuanyi as one of the shinning light of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and admonished him to continue to remain firm, courageous and supportive of the PDP.

The Governor who was conferred with a honorary traditional chieftaincy title of Aguneche Ibe of Enugu State by the Chairman, Enugu State Council of Tradition Rulers, Ambassador Lawrence Agubuzo, also urged the people of Enugu State to continue to stand by the governor to enable him deliver democratic dividends to them.

In his remarks, Enugu State Governor, Rt. Hon. Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi said Governor Wike has distinguished himself as a bold and courageous leader, noting that he is proud of his leadership.

Governor Ugwuanyi described the visit as the signpost of the deepening relationship between the two states and commended the Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers for conferring Governor Wike with a chieftaincy title.

“Last year, I was in Rivers State on two occasions, on the Governor’s invitation to commission two major road projects. On each occasion. I left Rivers State with strong, positive impression of your commitment to project conception and quick delivery.

You have distinguished yourself as a visionary, bold and audacious leader, even when you have inspired trust and confidence in our democracy. You have fought for our great party, PDP, and have given voice for the voiceless. You have been a defender of the defenceless.”

“This fraternal visit symbolizes the deepening of the fellowship between the government and good people of the Treasure Base of the Nation and of course Eungu State. I am glad that the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council under the leadership of the Chairman, Ambassador Lawrence Agubuzo deemed it fit to confer on you the Chieftaincy title of “Aguneche Ibe
of Enugu State as a testament to your sterling leadership quality”

As Buhari’s New Year Message Sparks Ray Of Hope: By Gidado Ibrahim

0

On New Year day, President Muhammadu Buhari, again, affirmed his servant leadership disposition by demonstrating that the trademark of presidential democracy is transparency, stewardship and accountability. He made this a reality in a nationwide broadcast to usher on January 1, 2022.

The presidential broadcast was yet another platform for the president to talk directly to Nigerians who, no doubt, are nursing high expectations for the New Year. But who would blame the citizens? Last year was turbulent for them as they grappled to cope with the atrocities unleashed by enemies of the country. In this regard, Buhari gave words of hope to Nigerians. He praised their courage and resilience, which he said was evident in 2021 as the country got enmeshed in significant challenges.

In a nifty but straightforward rendition, the president pithily laid bare the record of what he did in the previous year, as well as the roadmap and projected line of action for the year 2022. Again, Buhari intimated Nigerians on the frantic efforts made by his administration to deliver on key strategic priorities of security, economy and anti-corruption war. And to make assurance doubly sure that 2022 will not be business as usual, he capped his nationwide broadcast with the popular saying that “the past is but a story told, the future will still be written in gold”.

First of all, the president acknowledged the fact that in 2021, the growing insecurity in some parts of the country threatened to thwart incremental gains recorded in the real sectors of the economy as well as his administration’s bid “to position the nation on the irreversible trajectory of sustainable growth and progress. But he left the citizens with hope for 2022 when he promised that his government will remain bloody bold and resolute in forging ahead with people-oriented programmes and plans.

The revelation by the president that his administration is re-energising and reorganizing the security apparatus and personnel of the armed forces and the police with a view to enhancing their capacity to engage, push back and dismantle the operations of both internal and external extremist and criminal groups waging war against communities in some parts of the country is instructive, just as it is also a pleasant New Year gift for 2022.

Apart from totally eliminating the terror groups, bandits and other criminal elements, Buhari also promised that he would secure the peace and security of affected citizens because according to him, government is not unaware that victory on the battlefield is just one aspect of sustainable victory.

This is a tall order. The president is not unmindful of the fact that 2022 will certainly be a game changer in the life of his administration and this is what he is promising Nigerians. To this effect, he restated his administration’s commitment to upholding constitutional provisions that protect all Nigerians from internal and external aggression of any kind.

The results of the president’s resolve to end insecurity are overwhelming. On the same New Year day the president made his broadcast, wanted bandit leaders, Alhaji Auta and Kachalla Ruga, were killed in a forest in Zamfara State. The notorious bandit commanders met their end after a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft, under Operation Hadarin Daji, acted on credible intelligence, and bombarded their enclaves. The multiple airstrikes by the NAF jet, which were carried out in the early hours of Saturday, also eliminated Auta and Ruga’s men.

A flourished economy is the engine room of every nation. Any nation that is not able to sustain its economy, especially Nigeria that is living in a compromised security situation, is dangling loosely on the precipice. This explains why the issue of high level of resilience to record some significant achievements mentioned in the presidential speech is instructive. The measures the Buhari-led government has adopted so far has helped in reducing the growing food-related inflationary figures and have in considerable measure positively impacted Nigeria’s food security status.

President Buhari spoke of major wins recorded by his administration. He said these wins are evident in Nigeria’s most recent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). He attributed the 4.03% growth recorded in the third quarter of 2021 to the recovery being recorded in the nation’s economy as a result of the policies his administration came up with following the outbreak of COVID-19.

On investment drive, President Buhari has created the enabling environment for businesses to thrive not just in Nigeria but also across the African continent. What the president is bent on achieving by the business trips he and his deputy, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, embarked on in the last part of last year is job and wealth creation. He is ensuring that the ideas behind the creation of AfCFTA are actualized by creating the platform to further identify and proffer solutions to challenges militating against intra-African trade and generate market information needed to connect buyers and sellers throughout the continent.

The Buhari administration, through the ease of doing business policy, intends to transform Nigeria into an investors’ hub by investing heavily on infrastructures across the country. Nigerians have every reason to be optimistic about 2022 because President Buhari is ready to turn things around and ensure and wriggle the citizens out of poverty. This, he has demonstrated by the pace at which he and Osinbajo have been traversing the length and breadth of the globe to woo investors.

Buhari mentioned this when he made reference to what he stated during his recent investment trips. He applauded the National Assembly for passing the Petroleum Industry Bill which he signed into law on August 16, 2021, saying the legislation is expected to serve as a liberalizing force in the energy industry.

To say the least in the mildest way, Buhari’s international investment drive through his recent trips towards the close of the year 2021 were a clear indication of the president’s passion to fulfill his campaign promise of revamping the economy as he prepares to wrap up the final lap of his tenure in office this year.

Solid infrastructure is to business what blood is to the human system. Comparatively, between 2015 when President Buhari took over and now, the difference in improved infrastructures is clear. The president has deployed a larger chunk of the resources available to his government to build critical national infrastructures. All around the country, Nigerians are witnessing massive transformation through the rehabilitation, modernization and expansion of the railway system, national roads and bridges, both in rural and urban centres, alongside the airports and seaports.

As a strategic and purpose-driven government, the Buhari-led government has continued with these trends. On the humongous progress recorded so far in his anti-corruption bid, the president in the New Year broadcast announced the commitment of his administration to the fight against corruption which he described as the bane to the growth and prosperity of Nigeria. The cumulative effect, he said, are the results to show that the anti-corruption drive of his administration is making remarkable progress. He said the nation’s anti-corruption agencies have received the necessary support needed to effectively prosecute their duties.

Last year, I had the privilege of talking with a few of ECOWAS and European leaders at some of the regional and global meetings. From their thoughts on the Nigerian situation, there was a congruence of opinion about President Buhari’s governance style as encapsulated in his New Year broadcast to the nation. They all agreed that it is a model that would serve as reference point for constructive and purpose-driven leadership.

Again, the broadcast bears eloquent testimony to why the pan-African body, the African Union (AU), chose President Buhari to champion its anti-corruption fight tagged, “Winning the Fight Against Corruption: Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation.’’ The AU’s choice of President Buhari was in recognition of his administration’s commitment and success in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

By Joseph Edegbo :

Governor Udom Emmanuel has rededicated the state to God, attributing the rising profile of Akwa Ibom State’s development and prevailing peace to God’s unfailing mercies and guidance.

“Every year we gather like this to seek the face of God, this State as we all know belongs to God that is why I refer to Akwa Ibom in my speeches as God’s own piece of real estate.

“God is the great and mighty warrior who has never disappointed us as a state over the years through His love mercy and guidance which is why we have come here collectively as a people and as a state to thank Him for allowing us see the year 2022, for what He has done and what He will continue to do”

‘’What has happened in this state is what I call imprimatur of God’s invisible hands; from the peace and development to the rising profile of our state as a destination of choice for investors, conferences; to the sectoral achievements we have recorded which has earned us the national acclaim Nigeria’s best kept secret. There is no doubt that God is doing a great and mighty thing in the state’’

The Chief Executive of the State assured Akwa Ibom people of his commitment in delivering on his promises, stating that with some challenges earlier witnessed from climate to other unforeseen issues all developmental projects in the state will be completed.

‘’The year 2021 was a difficult one from the harvests of deaths that we had to the manifestation of what scientists call climate change.

“People will agree with me that we have never seen such a rainfall like that of last year and the attendant delay of most of our road construction and other infrastructural expansion.

“We thank God that in spite of these factors coupled with the Covid-19, we have remained totally focus in fulfilling our governance obligations to the best of the resources available’’

‘’This year all those who seek political office in 2023 will seek in peace and people should also realize that even if there up to 100 people there is only one seat and one man will sit and as the homily said no matter what we do it is only the Lord’s council that shall stand’’.

The governor took the only Bible reading from Isaiah 60: 1-6.

Mr Emmanuel also led in Offertory Procession alongside Deputy Governor, Speaker Akwa Ibom House of Assembly and Secretary to the State Government.
Prayers of rededication were made to God on behalf the State.

Delivering a homily on the theme of the event, “There Shall be a Performance”, culled from Luke 1:45, with reference to Isaiah 60:1-6, the Very Rev. Father Justine Udoma said it was high time Akwa Ibom people arose to the shining that God had purposed for them.

The Catholic Priest, stressing that no one can stop God’s purpose from coming to fruition, admonished that what every Akwa Ibomite from all walks of life ought to do is to believe, and work together, irrespective of differences, towards the performance of his promises, lest anyone be cut off the bounty of God’s blessing like the king’s officer (2Kings 7) who doubted the word of the Lord in Samaria.

Free Train Ride: Beneficiaries In Osun Say Gesture Must Be Sustained Beyond 2026

By Joseph Edegbo :

Beneficiaries of the free train service regularly provided by the government of Osun have urged the citizens and residents of the State to re-elect the incumbent Governor Adegboyega Oyetola for second term.

The beneficiaries who attributed their plea to the successful implementation of myriad welfarist policies and programmes of the Oyetola led Administration, said the genuine call was in the interest of sustainability and consolidation of good governance in the State.

The Administration of Governor Oyetola had since assumption of office continued the initiative introduced by his immediate predecessor to cushion the possible effects of movement of people and goods during festive periods.

Some of the holidaymakers that made their homecoming for the Christmas and New Year celebrations through the free train service eulogised the government for sustaining the scheme despite the State’s depressed economy.

They expressed gratitude to Governor Oyetola for his consistency and uprightness that had contributed greatly to the successes the scheme had recorded over the years.

Speaking after alighting from the train on Friday and boarding same on Sunday to Lagos, at the Osogbo Terminus of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, the free train service beneficiaries called on the people of the State to reward the good works of the Governor by reelecting him for second term.

According to them, the only way the good governance that had been successfully enthroned in the State could be sustained and consolidated was for the electorate to return the Governor for second term so as to ensure the continuity and consolidation of good things that have been happening in the State.

Mr. Yinusa Jinadu, a Lagos resident but citizen of Osun, extolled government’s commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the scheme, saying it is a thing of joy that the scheme has been sustained.

He lauded the rare commitment of the State to continually guaranteeing the security, welfare and well-being of the people of the state as demonstrated in the hands of fellowship extended to holidaymakers during festive periods.

Another passenger, Mrs. Florence Afolabi, an indigene of Okuku in Odo-Otin Local Government living in Ibadan, said the Governor had done so much and deserved to be re-elected in the next governorship election.

Similarly, Mr. Taiwo Abimbola, Mrs. Serifat Busari, Pastor Kayode Olugboyega, Mrs. Kadijah Kelani, lauded the kind gesture extended to them by the government, describing the free train service as panacea for ‘travel hurdles’.

Addressing the journalists, the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Industry and Empowerment, Dr. Bode Olaonipekun, disclosed that government was happy to have sustained the scheme.

Olaonipekun urged the residents to continue to reciprocate the good gesture of the Governor by returning him for second term.

“Going by the favourable public assessment of the yearly festive-based free train service from Lagos to Osun over the years, I am convinced that we are achieving the welfarist purpose for which it was initiated. And from the assessment that we conduct during and after each free train exercise, we are convinced that the difficulties attached to festive periods is being reduced from the populace that come to Osun during these periods.

“It is also a thing of joy that one of the key reasons of this exercise which is to test-run the train system, particularly when the idea of international market at Dagbolu was being mooted to be taking raw materials out of Osun to Lagos and return finished products to Osun, is being achieved.

“So, the yearly exercise of bringing the people from Lagos to Osogbo is paying off because the International Trade Centre at Dagbolu has taken off and they have already enlisted about 3,000 manufacturers and traders. What that translates to is that the confidence that the Governor has in the rail system to feed a hub that we are putting up at Dagbolu is really alive.

“This has proved to us that we are actually hitting the nail on the head and by the grace of God, we are continuing with this because the Governor has the love of the masses at heart. It goes beyond pretense or propaganda. It is proved and it is confirmed, and because of that, much more still lies in his heart and his kitty for the masses to enjoy.

“We implore the citizens to return him when the election comes because it will do us a lot of good to have him at the helm of affairs to continue for second term,” he added.

About 6,000 people benefited from the Yuletide free train provided by the Oyetola- led Administration in three trips for 2021 Christmas and 2022 New Year celebrations.

By Joseph Edegbo :

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has advocated the revival of cultural values as a way of addressing the social malaise that is fuelling insecurity in Nigeria.

The Governor was speaking at his hometown of Ajikamai, Shendam LGA during the 2022 Bit Pol Cultural Festival.

Lalong said the level of moral decay is largely responsible for the breakdown of social order that is increasing violent crimes and criminality which is threatening national peace.

He said the celebration of cultural festivals such as the Bit Pol should provide an opportunity not only to reunite people, but also lead them to conduct soul-searching that will interogate things that have led to the level of instability and violence in the country.

He urged Nigerians to strengthen their resolve to play a part in supporting the Government to provide the needed leadership that will address the current insecurity in the country in 2022.

He said ” No meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of insecurity and chaos. That is why we continue to emphasise as a Government that our people must not only live in peace with one another, but also be at alert to fish out criminal elements among them who constitute a threat. I have continuously admonished the traditional institution particularly at the grassroots level to be very proactive about security because they are the closest to the people. The challenges we face today by the activities of kidnappers, terrorists and other violent criminals means that we should be on our toes and stay ahead of them”.

Lalong reminded the Ajikamai Community Development Association of the urgent need to mobilise all resources towards ensuring that they create job opportunities for youths so as to prevent them from getting into crimes. He said apart from opportunities in the cities, there is a lot that can be done in the rural area because of our agricultural potentials.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Idris Wase, praised Governor Lalong for giving the necessary leadership to the State under the ruling APC which has attracted many Federal Projects to Plateau State including the Federal Polytechnic Ny’ak, cited in Ajikamai.
