A Trip to the Pool of Opportunities: Deborah Dagogo Recounts How it All Started

The entrepreneur always searches for change, responds to it, and exploits it as an opportunity” – Peter Drucker.

Contesting in competitions is one activity I do not really fancy, not because I lack the capability, but past experiences have made me look away and just admire the process with its catching prizes rather than get involved.

The Princewills Trust 2021 Vision and Success Opportunity challenge with a prize of an all expense paid trip to Dubai came to me as one of those many competitions that had winners already before the competition even began. However, I got persuaded by a father figure who ensured that I entered the competition by completing the online registration, which I did, met the criteria and entered the challenge fully. Interestingly, the challenge was specially put out for Students from Rivers State.

The Challenge

We were sent emails on how to go about the challenge with so many rules and it seemed like a very tough one to go through. I literally had the feeling not to go further, but my earlier motivator will always show up. The idea was to write a pitch on an innovation, vision, or business idea I think can bring about development and advancement of our society.

Being a young chap, I had a whole lot of idea in my head, but I still needed that one unique innovation that would earn me the ticket. I had lot of talks with friends, because I wanted their remarks first before deciding to work on any of the ideas, I had up my sleeve. Finally, I decided to go personal, asked myself few questions and tried to pick out a problem I had that needed a solution. I had to see myself as a human in the society that had a problem and needed a solution.

As a child, speaking in my indigenous language has been an issue for me, more like a burden because I felt so incomplete as an Ibani (a clan in the Ijaw tribe of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria) daughter. That gave me an innovative idea of the INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE TRANSLATION APP which could translate English Language to Ibani language and Ibani to English language and even aid easy learning and connect you to online tutors. I finally had to put pen to paper and had my pitch ready before due date for submission.

Weeks later I received an email confirming me as one of the winners of the challenge. I could not contain my joy and excitement. This was my first time and I got in without getting someone to alter the process (Man-know-Man). We got announced on the media and social media platforms to mark the end of the challenge and a travel date of September. Preparations kicked off, and after a lot of travel challenges and rigorous procedures to go through and requirements to be met, we were finally scheduled to leave Nigeria on November 26, 2021.

The Trip

Leaving Nigeria to Dubai was super exciting for me, not because it was my first, but the reason for the trip was one filled with so many opportunities waiting for me at the other side of the world. I had the opportunity of meeting my co-winners – Soruchi, Samuel and Melford (best travel squad). We arrived in Dubai after a connecting flight from Nigeria to Kenya and then the U.A.E.

This was the most activity packed, yet fun trip I have been on and not a single bill on me. There is this thing with enjoying money that is not yours, but I never felt that way, not like I feel entitled, but this was too real to be true but funny enough, I was already living it.
Touring the U.A.E. with the mindset of meeting opportunities and discovering innovative ideas was a major mind shift for me. My brains were on fire and my body super hyper; knowledge exchange was in top gear. Like I earlier mentioned I had the best travel squad, very smart, business oriented and intelligent young minds who were also on the same direction throughout the trip.

To see an opportunity, we must be open to all thoughts” – Catherine Pulsifer.

This quote always came to mind whenever we got to a new site and as we drove round the city beholding its beauty. A lot was in Dubai for us to learn and understand. We would always talk about Nigeria and our beloved State as we went deeper into the roots, leadership, values, cultures, and religion of the U.A.E. I discovered tourism in the most amazing manner and how much it has helped the country economically. The U.A.E. has a population of over 9 million; 1.4 million are natives while the rest are foreigners. It has opened its hands to a lot of visitors and innovation and the hospitality is top notch despite its status as an Islamic Country. We admired how responsible and futuristic they were towards their development. Indeed, nothing is impossible if you set your heart to achieve it and diversity is no excuse.

However, we had amazing time out with great personalities in the entertainment industry courtesy our Sponsors. I would never have imagined meeting DBanj and Yvonne Orji in Dubai talk more of sailing on the same yatch. We finally had good Nigerian meals which for me were a good way to bring the tour to an end — I will tell my food story in Dubai sometime in the near future.

Meeting Our Principal/ Sponsor

There are rare humans we doubt exist, and I think Prince Tonye Princewill is one of those rare humans. I really admire people who believe in human investment and meeting one who is passionate about it is the HIGHLIGHT of the challenge. For every conversation with him was fruitful, even the jokes had a message accompanying it.

Getting to dine with someone so intelligent yet humble is a rare privilege and humbling too. For years I have searched for the right mentor, a lot of persons I have gone into their DMs ignored me but I got an encounter on a platter of Gold.

I was scared he would see me as an unserious person because I was the clown in the squad who will carry fufu and soup from Nigeria to Kenya. However, I was there to also create content and have fun, so being me was the surest bet in getting pure contents. But then as a good motivator, he suggested I go into comedy, whether he was serious about it or not, I would think about it soon.

This piece would be incomplete without thanking Madam Kalanne Fubara and her team. We had a nice time because they made it happen.

What next After the Trip

A lot has been seen, learnt, experienced, and talked about and deciding hastily wouldn’t be a wise action. I have been doing a lot of thinking, researching, and scanning as so much was discovered in Dubai and with my amazing squad, we are certain we will not let this huge investment in us go to waste.

We are appreciative of Princewills trust — that family has a whole lot of intelligent people which is expected as the Prince is one intelligent man I have met in recent times. Ma’am Mina was a true representative of Princewills Trust and we were certainly in good hands. I look forward to many more productive years as we gradually put to work our ideas.

Excuses will always be there for you, Opportunity won’t” – Anonymous

The Kano State Government in North-western Nigeria have targeted about 3.6 million children for vaccination following the outbreak and transmission of the Circulating Vaccine Drive Polio Virus Type 2 (cVDPV2) in 12 states of Abia, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Lagos, Niger, Rivers, Yobe and Zamfara as well as Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Aminu Tsanyawa, while briefing newsmen said106 cases of the virus were recorded across 25 local councils.
According to him, the ministry is unveiling the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW) campaign to reduce mortality, with over N2.5 billion on both exercises, explaining that the integrated Outbreak Response (OBR1) and MNCHW campaigns would run concurrently within the stipulated time.
The commissioner also noted that the improved and genetically stable vaccine became necessary to attain the global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), adding that, the response with the vaccine to eradicate the virus was in line with the directives and guidelines from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the Ministry of Health.
Tsanyawa further pointed out that the polio vaccination would run along with the distribution of Maternal and Newborn Child health intervention with the disbursement of Vitamin A supplement, deworming, nutritional assessment, and Free ANC drugs including hematinic sulphur dioxide pyrimethamine and LLIN targeted at over 600,000 mothers and children under five.
“Kano has equally concluded all arrangements to ensure a quality OBR1 across the state’s 44 local councils. The OBR1 activities started from Friday, January 7, 2022 with the Direct Observed Polio Vaccination (DOPV) while the house-to-house campaign will be flagged off on Sunday, January 9,” the commissioner added.

Nigeria: Corps Marshal Condoles With Families Of Victims Of Kano – Zaria Road Crash, Orders Clamp Down On Speed Limit Violators

112

By Joseph Edegbo :

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi has commiserated with the families of the victims of the ill-fated fatal road traffic crash that occurred around Bagauda Law School, on Kano-Zaria expressway.

Consequently, he has
ordered Commanding Officers to with immediate effect, step up enforcement on the installation of speed limiting device by commercial vehicle operators nationwide.

According to him, the order is to further intensify the implementation of the Presidential directives of 2016 on all round enforcement on compulsory installation of speed limiting devices by commercial vehicles across board.

Oyeyemi who expressed deep concern over the ugly incident and the loss of precious lives that followed, stated that bringing to an end, speed related crashes is one of the cardinal strategic goals the Corps intends to achieve this year, hence the urgent need to clampdown on commercial vehicles who refuse to comply with the policy on installation of speed limiting device.

In a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, preliminary reports from the crash investigation team revealed that the unfortunate, fatal but avoidable crash which occurred as a result of speed limit violation, involved two Toyota Busses with the following registration details KBT 152 XA and NSR 275 ZX.

The two vehicles conveyed a total of 45 passengers as at the time of the crash. Out of the 45 passengers, 26 were injured while 19 comprising of 15 male adults and 4 female adults were killed.

While commiserating with families of the deceased and other victims, Oyeyemi stated that eradicating speed limited crashes from the highways has been the major focus since his assumption of office as the Corps Marshal.

Explaining further, he stated that the Corps has continually carried out with all sense of responsibility and commitment, the Presidential directives issued on clamping down on excessive speed, that is why the Corps has put up several policies and enforcement strategies among which include the compulsory installation of speed limiting device which commenced with commercial vehicles.

According to him, ” most of these crashes are highly avoidable, only that most drivers and other road users do not harken to the training, sensitisation, and enlightenment programmes that the Corps has continually put in place to mitigate road mishap”.

” As the lead Agency in road safety administration and traffic management, we shall continue to strategically deploy the combination of operational and public education tools and personnel to ensure that road users are properly enlightened and checkmated for the safety of all” he added.

The Corps Marshal therefore called on all road users to religiously adhere at all times to all established traffic rules and endeavour to listen to the National Traffic Radio 107.1 FM for real time traffic update, road safety education and others that could entrench safe road use culture.

Malaria: Long Walk To Eradication Among Displaced Nigerians

In Sub-Saharan Africa, and Nigeria to be specific, malaria is still a significant public health issue that is of great concern to local and foreign interests. It is said that every two minutes, malaria kills a Nigerian child under five years old. It is so significant that SDGs have it as one of the diseases that should be addressed by 2030.

Findings have shown that there has been limited dedicated malaria eradication support for Nigerians on the move – especially for those that have been displaced from their ancestral homes, either by Boko Haram terrorists in the North-east or bandits in the North-west until recently when the Global Fund saw malaria information, diagnosis, treatment and care as human right issues.

As a country, Nigeria’s strategic plan to end the malaria scourge by 2020 was not hitherto feasible and coming of the COVID-19 global emergency further threatened the zeal of concerned government agencies, civil society groups and development partners to eradicate the disease in the most populous black country in the world with a population of about 200 million (2006 National Population Census projection).

Unarguably in Nigeria, coupled with sharp cultural practices, malaria is more serious than COVID-19 in terms of its effects , especially on the vulnerable, the women and children who live in low-income settings when compared to their fellows in elevated reserved areas with netted windows and proper water channels.

In northern Nigeria for example, as in some other countries, some women cannot seek malaria information, diagnosis, treatment or care in the hospital without the approval of either their husband or mother-in-law. This is also a human rights issue which UNICEF is helping to solve through volunteer community mobilisers in selected local government areas in Kaduna State (UNICEF Kaduna Field Office 2021).

Commissioner, National Refugees for National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, while defending the commission’s 2022 budget at the national assembly recently, puts the figure of displaced persons at 3 million.

With the approval of the malaria vaccine by the WHO, it is not clear if this key population (IDPs) would be holistically included in this intervention.

Voices of displaced persons:

Secretary in one of the Internally Displaced Person camps, in North-west, Nigeria, Emmanuel Yari, lamented that they have been living in their own world since bandits chased them away from their homes.

“We have been facing malaria disease here in the camp. Most of our children here have been treated at one point in time or the other. We don’t have any hospitals close to us here.

“The only primary health care facility around is far from here that you have to spend between N400-N500 to and from that facility which is not easy for us, considering our current economic situation as displaced persons fighting for survival.

“We are pleading with the government and others to check on us and come to our rescue, by developing a dedicated malaria programme for us, the displaced persons.

“In this particular camp, we have a total of 868 persons comprising 278 men, 342 women and 248 children. These are the names on the list, but we are now more than a thousand here due to the continuous activities of these bandits.

“It is shocking that some of our fellow displaced persons that we came to seek shelter here last year decided to return home a few months ago due to economic and shelter harsh conditions.

“The news we are hearing from them is sad. Some of them have been attacked again and lost their lives while some women have been kidnapped and yet to secure their release as we speak.

“To me, malaria can be eliminated because we are aware of countries that had it before but due to aggressive engagements without leaving anyone behind irrespective of the social status and geographical locations”, he said.

Another displaced person, who is a young mother, Cecelia Josiah, said she and her children lack access to malaria information or kit, including insecticide-treated mosquito nets.

“I’m calling on the government to come to our aid. We know we are supposed to be sleeping under mosquito nets but we sleep outside with our little ones.

“If someone is sick and we manage to take the person to the hospital and it is confirmed the person is suffering from malaria, we will go and buy the prescribed drugs but after a few days, malaria will come back and that is how we have been managing it.

“We don’t know of any malaria programme for people like us. Government don’t even know we are here. We have been left behind. We have been forgotten. They don’t even hear our cry. We don’t hear anything from them.

“We don’t know when we are going back to our homes because bandits have taken over our homes and use them as enclaves where they keep their victims for ransom.

“We are calling on the government and others who can help to come here and help us because we cannot help ourselves”, she pleaded.

Christiana Danjuma is a displaced woman with two children aged between two and five. Her position is of displaced persons understanding of the symptoms of malaria.

“If malaria holds you, you will be feeling very weak and you will not be able to eat or do anything and, in most cases, when we go for a test, it is usually positive.

“Since we came here, no help from our government. No insecticide-treated mosquito nets. We and our children sleep outside without mosquito nets. We do go to primary healthcare centres to get some malaria drugs at a price. Nothing is free.

“Sometimes, we look for menial jobs to do so we can get some money to buy malaria drugs. We need mosquito nets and drugs for our children, pregnant women and old people among us”, she said.

Civil society speak:

Malaria Matchbox Equity Assessment report in selected states in North-eastern Nigeria 2020 by ACOMIN (a network of civil society organizations working on the prevention, treatment and mitigation of the impact of malaria in Nigeria) further buttressed that, no holistic malaria programme specifically meant for internally displaced persons in the Northwest Nigeria even as it engages communities in its malaria eradication campaigns in the area.

Program Officer of ACOMIN in Kaduna State, Mr Ogidi Nicodemus, identified the diversion and sale of free malaria commodities by unscrupulous health facilities as top setbacks facing the disease elimination efforts among the regular populace.

To him, before the coming of ACOMIN on the Global Fund Malaria Commodity Monitoring project in Kaduna, North-west Nigeria, malaria commodities have been going to the public health facilities in Kaduna and 13 other States without many people knowing. So, ACOMIN is enlightening communities on the availability of free malaria commodities in their communities.

“ACOMIN took it upon itself to engage the communities in our day-to-day activities and made them know that there’s a free malaria commodity, which includes test kits for malaria, Artemissinin-based combination therapies (ACT) and lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets amongst other commodities are available in PHCs in their locality”, he said.

He said as part of national efforts to address the challenges of Malaria in Nigeria, ACOMIN has been re-engaged by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) under the ongoing Global Fund malaria grant to continue implementing the civil society component, having successfully done it from 2019 to 2020.

The programme officer’s position was echoed by representatives of other partners including Malaria Consortium Global Fund, who attended the ACOMIN media brief.

World Health Organisation and other reports on malaria:

World malaria report 2021 by WHO (Geneva 2021) Globally, there were an estimated 241 million malaria cases in 2020 in 85 malaria-endemic countries (including the territory of French Guiana), increasing from 227 million in 2019 with most of this increase coming from countries in the WHO African region. Some 29 countries accounted for 96% of malaria cases globally, and six countries – Nigeria (27%), the Democratic Republic of Congo (12%), Uganda (5%), Mozambique (4%), Angola (3.4%) and Burkina Faso (3.4%) – accounted for all cases globally.

To the Breakthrough ACTION -Nigeria, COVID-19 wreaked havoc on malaria control and elimination efforts, quoting the World Health Organization (WHO) as urging countries not to scale back their planned malaria prevention, diagnostic, and treatment activities during the COVID-19 pandemic or the gains made in saving lives from malaria and other diseases over the past 20 years may be lost.

Also, microscopy data from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) show that the prevalence of malaria parasite in the blood in children under five years of age is 23 % (a decrease from 27% in 2015 and 42% in 2010), although there are significant regional, rural-urban, and socioeconomic differences.

Nigerian Government speaks:

In a telephone interview with this correspondent, National Coordinator, National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), Dr Perpetua Uhomoibi, hinted that with the support of the Global Fund, displaced persons and their host communities are being targeted in malaria programmes in four Nigerian states which are Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba and Gombe.

NMEP, which domiciles in the National Malaria and Vector Control Division, Department of Public Health of the Federal Ministry of Health, Nigeria, was tasked to formulate, facilitate policy and guidelines, coordinate the activities of partners and other stakeholders on malaria control activities.

The Director said specifically that, “for the Global Fund grant, there is an emphasis that we add IDP population in the North-east to ensure that both the IDPs and their host communities have access to free malaria diagnosis, prevention and treatment services. That is being done and it is WHO that is implementing that on behalf of the national programme. They make sure that they have nets, they can go and get diagnosis and treatment for malaria.

“We also have SDG messaging to make sure that when they are sick, they come to facilities to get treatment and prevention services. We call it malaria IDP intervention. Also, when we have commodities as NMEP respond to the NEMA as it provides for areas affected by flood and other emergencies. But mostly, we have continuous intervention in those four North-eastern states.

“The NMEP and partners have developed a new malaria strategic plan that will take us from 2021-2025. The goal of that strategic plan is to achieve a further reduction in malaria burden to less than 10 percent treatment in children under five by 2025 and to achieve malaria-related deaths to less than 50 deaths per 100,000 livebirths by 2021”, she said.

Call for action:

The Nigerian government needs to increase its efforts at fighting the epidemic in terms of allocating more resources, working on behavioural changes towards best environmental practices among its citizens and reducing its dependency on development partners.

If the government at all levels, civil society groups and development partners failed to develop an all-encompassing malaria package for internally displaced persons across the country, the 2030 SDGs goal of eradicating the epidemic in affected parts of the world may be another effort in futility. The time to act is now.

Nigeria: Tangale Group Berates Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State Over Killing of Kinsmen

0
Governor inuwa Yahaha of Gombe State, Nigeria

By Sunday Elijah

A socio-cultural group, Tangale Community Overseas (TCO) have berated Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State for failure to prevent the killing of their people by Fulani herders.

A statement by Secretary of the Group, Lamela Umaru Lakorok, which highlights some of the negative attitudes of the Governor towards the people marvels at how the governor refuses to take preventive action despite security report over the planned attack, as well as will keep mum after the killing of a people he governs.

“No one has heard the voice of the governor either confirming or condemning the massacre,” it says, adding that, “is the governor not the chief security officer of Gombe state? Is this the typical response of a leader? No, the man is not just biased against the Tangale people; he has set his mind against them for harm.”

TCO recalls how its sister group Tangale Community Development Association (TCDA), recently called on the state governor to withdraw a set of people it calls “thugs” which he stationed in their communities to provide security to the Tangale people.

“You may recall that the Tangale Community Development Association (TCDA) has recently written a press release. It demanded the governor remove the thugs he brought into Tangale. They are not law enforcement personnel but mercenaries of Gov. Inuwa,” it states.

The statement however praises the Fulani who live within the Tangale community for their cooperation.

“We also thank our dear neighbors of Fulani extraction, with whom we have lived for centuries, who have provided intelligence on the planned attacks on the Tangale people. We are keenly aware that the marauding attackers are not our local Fulani neighbors but imported from outside Gombe state. Everyone with common sense knows the attack is unprecedented in the entire Gombe state. Therefore, the commonsense question is, why this time? What circumstances are behind the sudden targetting of the Tangale people and the murder of people created in the image of God?” the statement questioned.

Full statement by the Tangale Community Overseas (TCO)

Ladies and Gentlemen of the press, the Tangale community ushers in the new year with tears as they buried twelve young men whom Fulani herders massacred in their homes. No doubt, the state security agency did its job by providing intelligence early enough to save lives, and we applaud them for that. We also thank our dear neighbors of Fulani extraction, with whom we have lived for centuries, who have provided intelligence on the planned attacks on the Tangale people. We are keenly aware that the marauding attackers are not our local Fulani neighbors but imported from outside Gombe state. Everyone with common sense knows the attack is unprecedented in the entire Gombe state. Therefore, the commonsense question is, why this time? What circumstances are behind the sudden targetting of the Tangale people and the murder of people created in the image of God?

It is no secret that Gov. Inuwa has targeted the Tangale community, as we noted in several press releases and articles. Unfortunately, the state has refused to protect the citizenry by denying the intelligence memo. Instead, it resorted to shameless lies and misrepresentation of facts. As if that is not enough, no one has heard the voice of the governor either confirming or condemning the massacre. Is the governor not the chief security officer of Gombe state? Is this the typical response of a leader? No, the man is not just biased against the Tangale people; he has set his mind against them for harm. You may recall that the Tangale Community Development Association (TCDA) has recently written a press release. It demanded the governor remove the thugs he brought into Tangale. They are not law enforcement personnel but mercenaries of Gov. Inuwa.

Therefore, in response to Gov. Inuwa’s evil intent against the Tangale people, we remind our people not to be fooled by any political or financial schemes of the man. He may seek to save face by giving tokens to foolish Tangale men who cannot see beyond the present. However, we know that the Tangale identity is above any individual interests. Therefore, we appeal to our people to look behind the façade and see that Inuwa Yahaya is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He has singlehandedly shed the blood of Tangale people than any war in recent memory. If he is a sincere and honest man, why do we hear the bleating of sheep in his pen? The final straw that broke king Saul’s Camelback was pretending to obey God while doing the opposite. As noted above, Gov. Inuwa is selecting some Tangale sheep for the political sacrifice of appeasement. But like Saul, God has rejected him.

While Gov. Inuwa parades himself as a demi-god in the state, we continue to seek recourse in the court of law. We regret to announce the death of one of those unjustly incarcerated by Gov. Inuwa, who could not receive proper care by the governor’s orders. Mr. Friday Mela was arrested on his way to Banganje to seek medical care, yet he did not receive justice until his death. Yet, we believe in the rule of law and the judicial system as the instrument of righteousness. We have seen justice catch up with Justice Pindiga, vindicating Justice Beatrice and the evil he perpetrated against her. We will see justice prevail against Gov. Inuwa’s mistreatment of innocent Tangale sons and daughters. Justice will prevail for HRH Dr. MIM in due course. We shall never surrender our sovereignty to an errant zealot. Justice will stay for the poor workers discharged unceremoniously so the governor can siphon their salaries to his pet projects. We call on the former executive governors of the state to use their prestige and influence as men of integrity to salvage our government from total anarchy.

There are matters of governance that need the urgent attention of the governor. For instance, the recent grim report by UNICEF indicates that Gombe state is 74.6% poor. That should concern all citizens who care about the glory of Gombe state as an economic powerhouse in Nigeria. We must each hold to integrity, respect the rule of law, and encourage innovation in our young people. We are willing to work with our political leaders, business entrepreneurs, religious leaders, and non-governmental organizations to effect changes and development. We also call on Gov. Inuwa to reflect on his style of administration and take advantage of the enormous resources of Gombe state within and without Nigeria. His current model does not bode well for the masses and will only destroy the legacies of his predecessors. What a tragedy that our children’s future is gloomy because of the lack of visionary leadership. His incompetence is only surpassed by the sheep-like behavior of some people whose God is their stomach. Therefore, we call on the Gombe state Legislature to show some bones and act as an equal member of the three arms of government. They must curtail the excesses of the governor and bring some sanity to the financial mismanagement.

Similarly, we call on Mallam Danladi Maishanu to stop posturing as Mai Tangle and desist from visiting Tangale towns. The case of Mai Tangle is officially in court, and it demands that he respects the court order. Furthermore, his recent visits to Tanglang and Tal intimidated our people, resulting in security concerns for Tangale land. His sycophant called Simon Lamiya, who parades himself as TCDA Chairman, is an imposter in the manner of Maishanu. No Tangale person recognizes him, and he is impersonating the TCDA leadership. He is fake and a disgrace to the Tangale people. We call on all well-meaning people to abstain from identifying with the man. He is as useless to Tangale as Babaji Babadidi.

If anyone doubts the divisiveness of Gov. Inuwa, please think about the recent election of CAN leadership. What has the state to do with the election of religious organization leaders? Yet, the governor shamelessly went to the media and announced what he had chosen as leaders of CAN. The man is in over his head. Yet, we have not heard the Legislature or Judiciary call him to order in these callous acts. We know that his intentions are for division in the state, just like he sowed the seed of discord in Tangale land. Therefore, we call on those ordained ministers falling for the deceit of the governor to disavow the relationship and distance themselves from this atrocity. CAN has elected its leaders; let us pray for unity among Christians and Muslims. We appeal to Gombe DCC to investigate the involvement of Mr. Babaji Babadidi in the intentional intrusion of the state in church matters. If it is true that he was involved in the process, he should be disciplined accordingly.

As we navigate the new year, let us remember that we have found ourselves in uncertain times in Gombe state. We have the opportunity to overcome religious differences and seek to build a better society for our posterity. Inuwa Yahaya is a mortal being, and his days are numbered. Soon he will vacate his position, but humanity remains to the end of time. Therefore, let us disavow those who sow the seed of discord in our community. We know them by name. Some are Christians, and some are Muslims. They thrive in causing divisions because it is the only way they know to survive. We are fully aware of the divisiveness inspired by some members of the Fawu family. However, we also know of the same caused by Babaji Babadidi, Bitrus Bilal, and Simon Lamiya. The community should ostracise these people because their actions result in losing lives and division. Some people seek to follow the path of discord in Tangale land by taking advantage of the respect we freely give them. They should know that what is freely given can also be voluntarily taken back. The Tangale community is more significant than any individual. There is only one TCDA with one BOT. A word to the wise is enough.

We wish all the people of Gombe state a prosperous year. But, please, remain vigilant and watch out for the safety of each other. Be observant of the invading thugs of Gov. Inuwa, who seek to cause havoc and destruction of lives and property. Furthermore, we encourage our youth to be alert and take responsibility for the community’s wellbeing.

Nigeria: Lagos Government Commences Feeding of Indigent Pregnant Women Next Week

0
Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Civic Engagement, Princess Aderemi Adebowale addressing stakeholders at the meeting on MICH on Thursday 6th January, 2022.

By iliya Kure

Lagos State Government will commence weekly distribution of food packs and supplements to less privileged pregnant women in the state. This is aimed at boosting neonatal brain development from conception to birth.

The Initiative which will kick-start in the second week of January under the State’s Mother, Infant and Child (MICH) programme is targeting 570 women across 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) at its launch phase.

Addressing Medical Officers of Health (MOH) drawn from all LGAs and LCDAs of the State, ahead of the flag-off, Special Adviser to the Governor on Civic Engagement, Aderemi Adebowale, enjoined them to remain conscientious while distributing the food packs at their various Primary Healthcare Centres.

Akwa Ibom State Government has announced the automation of its Civil Service and Asset Management System (AMS) for transparency and efficiency of operations.

Governor Udom Emmanuel said on Thursday, in Uyo, the state capital, while declaring open a one-day Training Workshop on the Human Resource Management System (HRMS) for State Executive Council members.

The Governor said the automation of the service will reposition it for more efficiency and seamless operations, adding that challenges earlier experienced with promotions, retirements, pensions and gratuity will be a thing of the past as errors will be minimised.

The State Chief Executive further said the full automation of the service will be completed by January 31, 2022, assuring that the integration of the Human Resource Management System and Asset Management System will be safe as its operations will be backed with an efficient storage device to enhance productivity.

“We want to leave the Civil Service much better than we met, we will first of all start with automation of the full Asset Management Processes of government and we want to do automation of the contract systems, how contracts are awarded, how they are being paid for, how they are monitored, how progress is made, everything then completion and releases.

‘Then the critical aspect that we must anchor from the point you join the Civil Service up to the point you become a pensioner is what we are doing right now it is called Human Resource Management (HRM) application software which is what we are doing right now and we intend to do a live cut-over by January 31 so that we can go live.

“Every single person must go live by January 31. So, anybody coming to work on February 1 in the MDAs is coming into a totally different approach and I’m believing that the Asset Management will do a total cutover by March 31.

“So, by April 1, I won’t do anything manual again, including vehicle requisitions.

“What that means is that a whole lot of things that were done manually before now will be fully automated. We are trying to make it user friendly and you can access it anywhere with your phones and laptops once you have a smart device you can access the system especially the HRM system where you can check on any information.

“The benefits are enormous in terms of cost, efficiency and information management and we are trying to reduce error in the system”

‘’The whole complaints about pension, gratuity, even issues of payroll, promotions, ghost workers, paying the wrong people and the likes, will be sorted out immediately, so once people enter this system, the system will work automatically: promotions, retirement, pensions, and gratuity; it is supposed to be a fully integrated HRM systems”, the Governor added.

In his opening remarks, the Head of Civil Service, Elder Effiong Essien thanked Governor Udom Emmanuel for his policy to introduce automation of the Civil Service, which he noted will upgrade operations of service from analogue to digital.

Elder Essien said the training and re-training of key and principal operators of Human Resource Management remains a cardinal objective of enhancing efficiency of Civil Service, and appealed to the Governor to build a data centre to store hardware components of Human Resource Management.

“Let me thank the Governor for giving us the idea to push and the needed resources to introduce this system of efficiently running the Akwa Ibom Civil/Public Service and thereby upgrading it from analogue to digital and automated service.

“Please permit me your Excellency the Governor to request Ministry of Housing to expedite action on the building of a Data Centre for safe housing of the hardware components of both the HRMS and AMS”, he added.
