A total of 1,685 fatal accidents were recorded over the 2021 festive season period, statistics released by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula reveal.

The figure was a 14% increase from the previous period.

Releasing the statistics on Tuesday, the Minister said Eastern Cape recorded the largest decline in road accident deaths.

Between 1 December and 11 January, Mbalula said the province recorded a reduction of 7.9% or 210 fatalities compared to the same period last year, when 228 fatalities were recorded.

He said: “We want to congratulate and commend the Eastern Cape leadership for their sterling work as they marshalled their troops towards the attainment of this significant reduction”.

Hot on its heels was KwaZulu-Natal, with a significant 6.5% fatality decline. The province recorded 275 fatalities as compared to 294 in the same period last year.

The Minister said it was disturbing to note that the Northern Cape had recorded the highest increase. The province’s road crash death recorded a 97% increase from the corresponding period. While the province recorded 33 deaths in the 2020 festive season, 65 fatalities were recorded in the 2021 festive season.

The Western Cape equally recorded a massive 55.6% increase in the percentage of fatalities moving from 133 fatalities the previous period to 207 in this period.

The Minister said: “We need to get to the root cause of this drastic increase and address it in a decisive manner”.

North-West recorded a 25.3% increase moving from 95 fatalities in the previous period to 119 in this period.

Mpumalanga recorded an increase of 24.3% moving from 152 fatalities in the previous period to 189 in this period.

Limpopo recorded a 16.5% increase moving from 194 deaths in the previous period to 226 in the 2021 period.

Gauteng recorded a 15.5% increase, moving from 238 fatalities in the previous period to 275 between December 2021 and January 2022 period.

Free State recorded the lowest increase of 7.2%, recording eight more deaths from the previous 119.

The Minister said it was “alarming” that there had been more fatalities per crash in the 2021 festive season in comparison to previous periods.

“This resulted in high passenger fatalities this year compared to the previous period. Passenger fatalities constituted 38% in the current period compared to the previous 32%.

“Pedestrian fatalities significantly decreased from 41% previously to 31% in the current reporting period,” he said.

In the 2021 festive season period, driver fatalities increased by 1% from the previous year’s 27%.

“The figures indicate that many vehicles involved in fatal crashes had a high number of occupants and most crashes occurred between 5pm and 7pm, particularly on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The statistics reveal that light motor cars contributed 49% to the total crashes followed by light delivery vehicles at 17%. Minibus vehicles contributed 8% and trucks accounted for 6%.

Mbalula in the press briefing urged the taxi and freight industries to “do more to reduce the number of crashes caused by their vehicles as they contributed higher fatalities per crash compared to other vehicles”.

By Joseph Edegbo :

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has commiserated with the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, Rev. Yakubu Pam over the passing unto glory of his beloved mother, late Ngo Zimi Pam.

Governor Lalong described the late Ngo Zimi Pam as a devout Christian and a community leader who invested so much in raising her children and others despite so many challenges she encountered in life.

He said the death of the matriarch of the Pam family is a huge loss to her immediate Tahei Village of Gyel District, Jos South Local Government and Plateau State as a whole.

Lalong, while asking the family to bear the loss and accept the will of God, said Ngo Zimi died at a ripe age leaving behind great legacies that will continue to speak for her in many years to come.

The Governor challenged her children, both biological and other ones she raised, to ensure that they carry on with the lessons of love, humility, hardwork and tolerance which she demonstrated and taught.

He also asked God to grant her soul eternal rest and comfort the family.

South Africa: DBE to Release Matric Results on Media As Ruled by Court – Official

Result Checkers

By Sunday Elijah

The Department of Basic Education says publish matric result on media platforms in line with ruling by the North Gauteng High Court ruling regarding release of National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination.

“This means that the department will make available the results to stakeholders who requested access,” the department said on Tuesday.

The decision came after AfriForum, Maroela Media and a Grade 12 learner made an urgent application for the court to reverse the department’s decision to no longer release matric results on public platforms, which cited the violation of the Protection of Personal Information Act or POPI Act.

However, according to the department, the conditions of the court ruling must be taken into account in line with the provisions of the POPI Act.

In addition to accessing results from media such as newspapers, the department has urged candidates to register on the website to view the results when they become available on Thursday, 20 January 2022.

Registration is now open and more than 10 000 people had successfully signed up by lunchtime today.

According to the department, candidates will have to go through a two-step verification process before receiving confirmation of their registration.

In addition, a 13-digit ID number and exam number will be required for registration.

The department said its website is zero-rated, which means it can be accessed whether you have data or not.

“It is in the public interest that this information is shared on public platforms and that is one of the reasons why we brought this application. We are delighted that the court agreed with us in this argument,” said AfriForum’s Education Rights Manager, Natasha Venter.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to join Dr Patrick Soon-Shiong, founder of the multinational conglomerate NantWorks, LLC, in launching the NantSA vaccine manufacturing campus in Brackenfell, Cape Town, on Wednesday.

The President and Dr Soon-Shiong will also launch the Coalition to Accelerate Africa’s Access to Advanced Healthcare (The AAAH Coalition).

This launch comes after an announcement made by Dr Soon-Shiong in September last year of an ambitious initiative to build capacity for advanced health care in Africa.

NantSA, a division of NantWorks, and The AAAH Coalition aim to accelerate domestic production of pharmaceuticals, biologics and vaccines that will reach patients across the African continent.

In a statement on Monday, The Presidency said that through the synergistic efforts of  members of The AAAH Coalition, self-reliance will be accelerated around next-generation vaccines manufactured in South Africa for Africa, innovative therapeutics and pandemic preparedness.

“With the support of the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation, institutes for infectious disease and cancer centres of excellence will be established at the universities of Cape Town and the Witwatersrand and the Chan Soon-Shiong Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CSS CERI) at the University of Stellenbosch,” the Presidency said.

President Ramaphosa and Dr Soon-Shiong will perform a ribbon-cutting for the official launch of the NantSA vaccine manufacturing campus at Brackengate and also present the vision and mission of The AAAH Coalitions.

The event will be attended by a select group of invitees including representatives of government, academia and the biotech industry.

Former Eskom Manager Loses Legal Bid To Appeal Forfeiture Order

Former Senior Manager for Coal Operations at Eskom, Petrus Mazibuko, has lost a bid to appeal an application to have a R11.5 million forfeiture order against him set aside by the Special Tribunal.

This came after it was found that Mazibuko has unlawfully benefitted from an Eskom coal transporting contract awarded to a company linked to him and that of his brother.

Special Investigating Unit (SIU) was subsequently granted an order to seize at least R11.5 million held in accounts belonging to the two brothers.

According to Tribunal spokesperson, Advocate Selby Makgotho, Mazibuko, his brother Shadrack and their companies sought to appeal the forfeiture order on several grounds at a higher court.

“Mazibuko, his brother Shadrack, and Thephunokheja Projects (Pty) Ltd…contend that in granting the final relief, the Special Tribunal erred in its assessment of the facts and application of the law.

“They alleged that the Special Tribunal exercised its discretion on incorrect facts,” Makgotho said.

According to Makgotho, the tribunal dismissed the application with costs as their case had “no merit”.

“Judge Thina Siwendu found that there were no prospects of success and that there were no compelling reasons why the matter must be heard by a Full Court as Mazibuko had prayed for. Judge Siwendu found no merit in the complaint and that the orders were competent in the context of civil forfeiture orders before the Special Tribunal,” he said.

The hawk can spread her wings as she likes but she can never be as beautiful as the peacock. You can’t be what you are not. It is even a great insult and sheer absence of empathy, respect for human dignity of the citizens and the common people for any politician to wait until the time of elections before they begin to share relief materials or share money to the people. Will you continue sharing the money and the bags of rice even after the elections? The hawk can never be a peacock.

There is an African proverb which says that “no matter how long-necked the ostrich is, it can never be mistaken for a giraffe”.

The Political climes in Nigeria is boiling and is getting hotter and hotter by the day.

Both the lions, dogs and foxes bath in the same dust. In all of these, the electorates must remain informed, wise and resolute towards electing the right persons for the job. Persons who have the basic interests and needs of the masses at heart. It’s a time where all kinds of political stunts are pulled.

Most recently, we saw and heard about some politicians in Southern Kaduna sharing relief materials and others gathering people to share them money. Well, I pray that the people be wise this time around. They should collect and spend whatever money being given to them by any politician then elect the right person on the election day. Your vote is hundred times more expensive than the peanuts given you by desperate politicians. Our Nigerian people will say, “collect di moni, chop am, den elect better person wen election come”.

This campaigning and consultations period offers the electorates the opportunity to listen to all aspirants and understand truly those who really capture their needs and those who uphold people-centered ideologies. Because after the elections you get what you bargained for. The time is now to make the wise decisions. “Shine ya eye o!”

We must put an end to “the hungry man politics”. Where you get peanuts during campaigns while the candidate(s) that emerge victorious through your votes cart away billions of naira to their homes at the detriment of you and your children, and your children’s children welfare and social safety. Put an end to this. Your votes are way more expensive than the peanuts that these guys offer you now.

If I were to choose between these two persons: the one who has never helped me before but is looking for an opportunity to do so and another person who has never helped me before but is helping me right now not for helping sake but because he has a hidden agenda, because he needs my help or because he needs my VOTE, I will choose the one who has never helped me before but is seeking for the opportunity to do so than choose a hypocrite who never knew that I existed but all of a sudden because he needs my vote, I become”temporarily important” to him or rather them.

A good example is the recent futile attempt by Bola Ahmed Asiwaju Tinubu, a one time Lagos State governor, an APC chieftain and currently an aspirant for the presidential seat. He recently donated 50 million naira to those affected by banditry in Zamfara State. Our people say, only mad men dance after the drums are no longer played. Why now when banditry has been on for a long time? In fact, never has he come out to even condemn it and all of a sudden he’s donating some miserable 50 million naira to God-knows-who.

We have countless victims of banditry in Kaduna State and most evidently in Southern Kaduna, we have Nigerians wallowing in peril and languishing in pain and uncertainty in the North East and North West of Nigeria and across countless IDP Camps in these same locations of our nation, just to mention but a few. Where was he all this while until now that the election bells are ringing.

Electorates, Nigerian citizens, citizens of Kaduna State and particularly the people of Southern Kaduna must not dance to this tune of madness again. We must wise up. Our votes are priceless. We must offer them freely to those whom we believe and trust will serve us and our needs when they get up there. We will not vote for those who will go there and forget that we exist until four years later. No! We won’t!

Wise up people of Southern Kaduna. They will come with money bags, they will come like Knights in shining armor. They will come like angels that freshly descended the face of the earth, the face of Nigeria, the face of Kaduna State, and the face of Southern Kaduna. They will lure you into their ugly political traps; please don’t fall into these traps like rats.

Finally, we must realize that because an aspirant gave you a penny during campaign is not a sign that he is kind or sane. Don’t sell your birthrights( your votes) for peanuts. Let’s embrace those who present before us real issues, let’s embrace aspirants and candidates that have clear vision. I would rather follow a man with a clear vision than vote for a man that gave me a penny during campaign. Where were they when you were suffering through all these four years? Wise up! Beware of overnight philanthropists who come at night and disappear at day.

Ideally, politicians come into a social contract with the electorates during elections. The electorates offer their votes to candidates so that they win election. In return, the candidates are totally accountable to the citizens when they assume power and start discharging their duties.

However, how do electorates expect someone who has given them cups of garri, cups of rice and peanuts during campaigns to consider them after they have entered office?

Most of these politicians borrow money from banks, firms and individuals in order to spray on the electorates and stakeholders;( which is rather unhealthy for our social system). Therefore they enter office with debts on their heads then they use the funds they are suppose to work for the masses across communities to repay the money they borrowed. We must put an end to this very vicious cycle.

In America and most Western nations, the citizens contribute their money to their preferred candidate(s) so that their preferred candidate(s) will win the election. And after the elections, they have every right to hold these persons whom they didn’t just give their votes to but also contributed their money for accountable. That’s why things work for them.

We must rise up to the occasion and say no to political, hypocritical, desperate and overnight philanthropists.
God bless you,
God bless Southern Kaduna,
God bless Kaduna State,
God bless Nigeria!
