Farmers under the auspices of Maize Association of Nigeria (MAAN) have been moving thousands of tonnes of maize to Kaduna, to set up pyramids, ahead of the Association’s 30th anniversary.

Many trucks were sighted bringing in maize from 21 maize growing states under the 2021 rain-fed season, cultivated under the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Borrowers’ Programme (ABP).

The Association’s officials said the required quantity of maize and sizes of the pyramids would be determined by availability of space at Eid prayer ground, Unguwan Sarki, where the pyramids would be set up.

Speaking with journalists at the flag-off of the pyramids, Coordinator of the ABP for the MAAN, Joseph Bamidele, said the pyramid was to showcase the successes the farmers had achieved in maize production in Nigeria.

President of the Maize Association of Nigeria, Dr Bello Abubakar, described the formation of the maize pyramids as “the second national pyramid ever in Nigeria and Africa.

“We want to showcase what we have done and acknowledge what Mr. President has done for maize farmers in Nigeria. We also want to show the effort and appreciation of all maize farmers in Nigeria.”

Speaking on high price of grains in the market, he said it was a global issue, adding that statistics by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) had predicted increase in prices of food commodities by the end of 2021.

“The price of maize is even better than the prices of other commodities. It is a global issue, it is not only in Nigeria,” he said.

“One factor that contributed to the high cost of maize is COVID-19 in 2019 and 2020. There was a scarcity of inputs that farmers needed. Even mechanisation equipment was scarce due to COVID-19. What a farmer would buy at N1,500 has gone up N4,000. And the cost of production has increased significantly.

“Before this administration came in 2015, we only had 8 million tonnes of maize, but by the end of 2020, it was 20 million tonnes. Apart from that, farmers now have access to inputs without their money but as a loan; they get the technology under the ABP,” he added.

Speaking on productivity of farmers, the MAAN president said, “Where farmers were getting 20 metric tonnes of maize, they are now getting 50. There is a new technology of farming. And there are extension services under the ABP, as well as mechanisation, monitoring and evaluation. The farmers are benefiting, and they have increased their production.

“The maize mills we have in the country have increased. The processors have more companies now, so they employ more people. These are the success stories of the ABP. In one season, more than one million people get jobs under the programme.” He stated.

By Sunday Elijah

Zaar Youth Development Association (ZAYODA) has condemned claim by Zaar Development Association (ZDA) and Zauren Gonto, saying the duo is the Supreme body of Zaar nation.

The two bodies had purportedly written a joint letter to Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, northeast Nigeria, dated 30th January 2022, making such claim.

“We saw with rude shock, a letter written to your Excellency by the above-mentioned self-acclaimed bodies, claiming among other things, to be the supreme bodies in Zaar land, which is nothing but a bunch of lies and deceit,” says National Leader of ZAYODA, Mr. Ga’Allah Daniel, in a rejoinder made available to newsmen in Bauchi.

Mr. Daniel said ZAYODA disagrees with the content of the letter written to the Governor,

“The leadership structure of Zaar land includes but is not limited to the following: Zaar Traditional rulers, Zaar Council of elders, Women Wing, Youths. I is ordinarily expected that any letter emanating from the community must have the blessings and the mandate of the leadership structures in Zaar land”

“But sadly, this case in point flagrantly disregarded this vital procedure. It is against this background that we are calling on you to gloss over these acts of misinformation and total distortion perpetrated by these so-called acclaimed leaders of Zaarland”, Daniel said

While commending Governor Mohammed for taking a bold step towards ensuring the actualization of Sayawa Chiefdom, ZAYODA says it is aware of efforts by some people to frustrate the move.

“Your excellency, we want to commend and applaud your boldness in attempting to solve the protracted agitation of the Sayawa community for the actualization of our Chiefdom by citing the status of the capital Sayawa Chiefdom in Tafawa Balewa, no more no less”

“We are aware of counter-currents attacks on the other sides of the divide to water down your effort in finally addressing the matter once and for all. May God grant you the wisdom to fulfilled our heart desires”

“Even ordinarily, when you set up the Committee of the Review of Babalakin, Shehu Awak and Justice Bala Umar Committee we had strong doubts on the credibility of the Committee to do justice because our Zaar first 11 were not included and the composition of the Committee membership is deliberately skewed against us”.

“Secondly and most importantly, the Sayawa Chiefdom matter is before the competent Court of Appeal in Jos. Be that as it may, we are waiting to see that justice must not only be done but seen to be done to our people” The Youth group further stated

ZAYODA expresses optimism that Governor Mohammed will not impose on them a ruler that they don’t desire.

“We want to reiterate that as a people, we have a Gung Zaar select, what we desire is for the state government to give us staff of office with a headquarters in Tafawa Balewa town” The group added

The youth group also state that Zauren Gonto and ZDA are speaking out of their selfish desires and not as representatives of the Zaar people because Zaar nation has lost confidence in them long before now.

ZAYODA thanks the Governor on behalf of the Sayawa Community, stating that the publication on the Daily Trust newspaper dated 29th January 2022, by Barr. Bukata Zhyadi & Co. remained the authentic and majority voice of the Sayawa people, promising that Sayawa Community will continue to remain law-abiding citizens.

A source who pleaded anonymity, claimed the soldier was injured, while trying to avert attacks on Nyuwar by gunmen suspected to be neighbouring Waja community.

He revealed that some houses were also affected while women, children and the aged were forced to escape to neighbouring communities for refuge.

Meanwhile, dwellers are said to be scampering for safety as tension increases within the affected areas, as panicking residents hurriedly left in search of protection.

Nigeria: Kogi Sets New Record, Launches App on Open Governance

0

By Joseph Edegbo :

Kogi State Government in North Central Nigeria, Tuesday officially unveiled the Kogi Open Governance and Accountability System (KOGAS) and the Kogi Digital Album.

KOGAS is a Digital System platform specifically designed to strengthen interactions and relationships between the government and the citizens.

Governor Yahaya Bello at the unveiling ceremony at Governmemt House, Lokoja said with the new development, the citizens have more guaranteed access to their leaders.

Bello who was represented at the occasion by the Deputy Governor, Edward Onoja added that there is a standing directive for all queries to be attended to in less than 24hours

“To the good people of Kogi State, we are here to remove the last filters and ensure that what you see is what you get. Of course, those who have been following events in the media know that one of the hallmarks of my New Direction Administration is the transparent conduct of government businesses.

“We have been appraised and ranked and rated by several national and international organizations as one of the most transparent, if not the most transparent State Governments in the Federation. We are back to back leaders in meeting the indices of transparent governance set and evaluated by the World Bank’s State Fiscal Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability (SFTAS) Programme. In fact, we are the only state which has ever scored 100% in the annual evaluation process. The Kogi Open Governance and Accountability System (KOGAS) is therefore another layer of my Administration’s commitment to open governance and accountability.

“A responsible Government must be as open and transparent as possible to the citizens. This is only possible when functionaries at all levels are tasked with heightened responsiveness to citizens in the conduct of all official business. As I see it, all of us in this Administration must be open to endless scrutiny by those we serve. In fact, we must require it as a key performance indicator in our service compact.

“Opacity and cult-like secrecy is how skeletons get into cupboards in the governance process. I have expressly warned my cabinet members and all other employees of the Kogi State Government to avoid it like the plague.

“When we migrated to the Treasury Single Account (TSA) some heads of MDAs failed to implement with the alacrity and transparency implicit in my directives and they were shown the way out of the system. Till today, every appearance of non-transparency is haram and anathema in this Government. You are a public servant not the high priestess of a secret society or the capo of a cult. Shadowiness in official business is liable to get you sacked, prosecuted or both.

“What we intend to achieve with KOGAS is to enlist the public more intimately in the policing of government and her accoutrements. In essence, we are giving our people the tools they need to play the active role of watchdogs of our officials, ministries, departments and agencies.

“The Kogi State Ministry of Information and Communications will deploy KOGAS for round-the-clock live interactions and feedback to and from the public per the standard operating procedures. The ministry will put every part of Government on the platform. It may help those who may want to resist this Change to know that KOGAS will also be monitored in real time from my Office through my Chief of Staff via bi-weekly compliance analysis and status reports put together by our Research and Development Unit known as the New Direction Blueprint Team.

“Kogi Open Governance and Accountability System is therefore a digital synergy between the leaders and the led for the purposes of good governance. We will be stationing a rotation of cabinet members and other high-ranking government officials on the KOGAS platform for real time interaction between the Government and the citizens. They will take suggestions and complaints and ensure that appropriate action is taken. Where my personal attention is needed, or that of any specific official, they will escalate immediately. Typically, by my directive, all matters must be answered within 24 hours, or at least initiated where the request calls for a more complex approach.

“Beyond the accountability aspects of KOGAS, it will also create a platform for citizens’ engagement and mobilisation, both for governance excellence and for community service. Options will be available from time to time for citizens to form themselves into volunteer groups to render public services to themselves and in this way bridge noticeable gaps in community engagement. This is one of our initiatives at ensuring that we build a population of responsible citizens who are patriotic about Nigeria and passionate about the development of our dear State.

“Apart from the Kogi Open Governance and Accountability System, the Kogi State Digital Album and the Confluence Business Directory are also being unveiled today. The Digital Album will be a repository of images with pictures of government activities, programs and projects to tell our stories. The Directory will be a yellow pages for finding businesses operating in Kogi State and enhancing their reach.”

He commended the Ministry of Information and Communications for delivering the digital tools that will enhance governance in the state.

The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo while giving his speech during the unveiling said the system was made available by Governor Bello’s interest to make the people active participant in governance. He added that the Governor believes that power belongs to the people.

Fanwo further stressed that with KOGAS, citizens can ask questions from various government Ministries, Agencies and Departments on all issues as regards the growth of the State.

The Consultant, Mr. Wole Aguda while giving an overview of the KOGAS platform and the Kogi Digital Album said it is one that give room to participatory governance by all and gives the opportunity to have reel of history for government officials and plans for the future. It also gives room for the people to access the documentation of government history, documentation of customs and traditions of different tribes and ethnic groups within the State.

The Consultant who expressed how proud he is to be a Kogite, added that the Government of Alhaji Yahaya Bello has shown that it is indeed the government of the people.

Ayodele John Alonge PhD, CLN, FIIM while delivering his lecture on the zoom network, described the platform as a kind of Wikipedia where you can go to access all kind of information. He added that one doesn’t have to be in Kogi State before he/she can know what is happening there.

Prince Ade Omole, a United Kingdom (UK) Defense Ministry NSV-Certified Senior Consultant with over 30 years experience in the International IT Project Management Industry, while giving his remarks, appreciated Governor Yahaya Bello, describing him as a role model.

Prince Omole said with the KOGAS platform, the people have access to what the government is doing.

He added that KOGAS is a tool that helps Public Administration to be easier and it will help to ensure internal administration is done effectively and that service delivery will be improved in planning and decision-making.

He said since the government and its officials can’t be everywhere at the same time, the KOGAS tool will allow the people communicate with them directly.

The President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Olumide Akpata while speaking on the topic; “The Right to Ask”, quoted the Freedom of Information Act, adding that it gives everyone the ‘Right to ask’.

He added that government wants her citizens to ask questions in order to ensure their well-being, stressing that KOGAS platform will add to the efforts of his administration on Transparency and Accountability.

Contestant Petitions Education Minister Over Exclusion From Kadpoly Rectorship Race

136

A contestant in the Kaduna Polytechnic Rectorship, Prof Muhammad Sani Yahaya, has protested alleged exclusion of his name from candidates seeking the exalted office by governing council of the institution.

According to Prof. Yahaya, he was disqualified because he currently lectures at KASU having moved from Kaduna Polytechnic.

Addressing Journalists on Tuesday in Kaduna, Yahaya explained that he had been in the services of Kaduna polytechnic since 1994 as an assistant lecturer, rising through the ranks until he moved to KASU in 2017, maintaining there was no justifiable reason for his disqualification from taking part in the rectorship interview.

He accused the institution’s governing body of defying the polytechnic Act by disqualifying a candidate who applied for a post of the Rector of the institution on the ground that he was a Professor teaching in a university.

“I have been illegally excluded from the interview for the post of Rector of Kaduna Poly in a gross violation of my inalienable right and out of four other candidates that rose to the rank of chief lecturers from the same institution.

“Three, including the current acting rector of the instruction were called for an interview while I was deliberately excluded which is very unfair.

“I believe I was also discriminated against on purpose in favour of selected and favoured candidates for the post while We are all equal in the sight of the law$, he alleged.

Professor Yahaya who lectures in the Department of Agriculture at KASU, called on Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, Emir of Zazzau, Executive Secretary of NBTE, Chairman House Committee on Tertiary Education and Services among other relevant personalities to prevail on Kadpoly governing council to rescind its decision in the interest of fairness, justice and the rule of law.

That was very unfair.” said Prof. Yahaya, a lecturer with Kaduna State University.
“I believe I was also discriminated against on purpose in favour of a selected few candidates for the post of The Rector Kaduna Polytechnic while we are all equal in the sight of the law; this treatment is totally unfair.”
