Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya has called on National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) members who completed their mandatory one year service to the nation in Gombe State to continue with their nation building even after their service year.

He made the call in Gombe at the passing out ceremony of batch ‘A’ stream 1 of the corp members deployed to the State Thursday morning at the Pantami Township Stadium.

According to him, “the task of nation building is painstaking and continuous. You should therefore continue to be critical participants in our nation’s regeneration project”.

He said “the nation is immensely grateful to you for your dedication and patriotism. It is my hope that your faith in Nigeria will persist and permeate your souls as you strive for greater heights for which you are all destined”.

Governor Inuwa also encouraged them to be innovative and determined to discover the vast opportunities that abound in the nation by being self employees.

“You should exploit the goldmine inherent in agriculture, manufacturing, mining and rendering of social services among other business ventures. I urge you to key into the policies and programmes of the Federal Republic of Nigeria geared towards youth empowerment, self-employment and economic development”, he stated.

He commended them for what he described as their invaluable contributions to the State through group and individual community development projects in the nooks and crannies of the State in various spheres of life such as education, sports, agriculture and other critical sectors of socio-economic development.

“We thank you for the selfless efforts in making our communities better, particularly the strengthening of our health initiatives for Rural Dwellers Programme across the state by providing free medical interventions”, Governor Inuwa stressed.

N201b for Toxic Fuel Cleaning up: You’re Pushing Nigerians Too Far, PDP Cautions Buhari, APC

President Muhammadu Buhari

By Joseph Edegbo

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cautions that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration is pushing Nigerians to take to the streets in protest against what it calls its continued arrogance, corruption, insensitivity to the feelings of the people as well as alleged shielding of APC leaders behind the importation of toxic fuel into the country.

A statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba says PDP also condemns the moves by APC to further siphon money from the national coffers by seeking to draw a staggering N201 billion under the pretext of cleaning-up the poisonous fuel instead of exposing the culprits and getting them to bear the cost.

“Is it not saddening that the APC administration has continued to turn deaf ears to the cries by Nigerians to end its corruption and treasury looting spree and ease the suffering of the people occasioned by its sleaze and manifest incompetence in governance?

“Nigerians were shocked when the news broke out over the weekend that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company is seeking an estimated N201 billion to clean up the adulterated fuel.

“It is clear that this is another ploy by officials of APC administration to continue to pilfer the national treasury to fund APC’s rigging plans ahead of the 2023 elections as well as to finance the wasteful lifestyles of it leaders at the detriment of other Nigerians.

“Such move by the APC to further fleece the nation amounts to pushing the already exasperated citizens to the wall. The APC government would have nobody but itself to blame over the possible consequences of its continued impunity, insensitivity and disregard to the feelings of Nigerians.

“It is instructive to note that the APC has remained unyielding since our Party demanded for an investigation into allegations that APC leaders connived with some foreign interests to import very cheap heavily contaminated fuel laden with methanol in their desperation to corruptly raise billions of naira to fund APC’s plots to rig the 2023 general elections.

“Nigerians can recall that our Party, well-meaning Nigerians and organizations had exposed and challenged APC’s plot to siphon N2.557 trillion padded as fuel subsidy for 2022. Having been so exposed, the APC resorted to fleecing Nigerians through importation of toxic fuel and now seeks to fritter N201 billion under the guise of cleaning up the adulterated fuel.

“The failure by the APC administration to set up an Independent Commission of Enquiry on the “APC Toxic Fuel ImportGate”, especially to ascertain the individuals involved in the deal, who undertook the pre-inspection and how much was paid for very cheap contaminated fuel, is fast putting the nation on edge.

“The only way to douse the tension is for the APC administration to heed to demands by Nigerians and expose APC leaders allegedly involved in the importation of the toxic fuel; get them to pay compensation particularly to those whose vehicles and equipment were damaged by the bad fuel as well as bear the cost of the said cleanup.

“The PDP therefore calls for the immediate sack of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva for misleading Nigerians and concealing critical information at the onset of this “APC Toxic Fuel ImportGate” saga, having refused and failed as a public official with duty to Nigerians when he said on national TV that he cannot name persons involved in the fraud.

“The PDP also demands that, having woefully failed, President Buhari should hands-off responsibilities as Minister of Petroleum Resources and allow competent professionals to man the ministry in order to restore sanity in the system.

“This is because the headship of the Petroleum Ministry as presently constituted is peopled with persons with no relevant education, experience and expertise to manage this critical sector that accounts for over 90 percent of the revenue of the nation”, the statement concludes.

Barely 24 hours after Malam Hamza Adamu Soye’s resignation as Chairman, Gombe State Sports Commission, Governor Muhammad Imuwa Yahaya has approved with immediate effect, the appointment of Mr. Olanre Daniel as new chairman.

Malam Hamza Adamu Soye, had tendered his resignation as Chairman of the Commission on Tuesday (15/02/2022) morning, joining other aides of the Governor who recently resigned.

Soye, a known sports enthusiast, had held the position since inception of the Inuwa administration in 2019, threw in the towel without giving any reason other than thanking Inuwa for the opportunity to serve in the administration, in a letter that went viral on social media.

However, unlike other aides whose positions are still vacant, Governor Inuwa Yahaya, on Wednesday swiftly appointed Olanre Daniel, who also double as Chairman of the State’s darling soccer team, Gombe United football club.

Secretary to Gombe State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, who conveyed the Governor’s approval, said the decision was sequel to the resignation of the erstwhile Chairman of the Commission, Malam Hamza Adamu Soye.

However, in the statement made available to newsmen by the Director General, Press Affairs, Government House Gombe, Ismaila Uba Misilli, said, “It should be noted that Hamza Soye’s decision to relinquish his position is not unconnected with the irreconcilable differences between him and the management of Gombe United Football Club, especially over running the affairs of the club”.

The statement read further that, “On this, Government is resolutely behind the management of Gombe United who are living up to expectation, by not only getting the club elevated to the top league in the country, the Nigeria Professional Football LEAGUE (NPFL), but also making the state proud with their remarkable performance”.

Misilli’s statement said, Government is pleased that the current management of the top NPFL club has repositioned the team within a short period, making it one of the clubs to beat in the country’s top flight league.

It assures the management and indeed the entire sports loving people of the state that Government will continue to give the Savannah scorpions all the maximum support they require to succeed.

Nigeria: Improved Family Planning in Gombe Worthy of Celebration – Group

Map of Nigeria showing Gombe State

By Ugo Willies

The Gombe State Advocacy Working Group (AWG) on Family Planning says the improvement by women accessing child spacing services is worthy of commendation.

State Chairman of the group, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, stated in an interview with our correspondent on the sidelines of a close out meeting of a programme carried out by Saif Advocacy Foundation in collaboration with Pathfinder International.

Comrade Alhassan said there is great need to celebrate the feat because, “we have seen the result of giving our time, energy, resources and in making Government accountable to their actions”.

According to him, before now, the maternal mortality rate of Gombe State was very high but that by 2013 when the women in the State started accessing child spacing services, the maternal mortality rate had greatly improved by 2018 and beyond.

Subscribing to child spacing or family planning has been scientifically proven to avert death of women by 40 per cent, Alhassan Yahaya added.

He said, at the beginning when they started the advocacy campaign, ” the Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) of Gombe State was only four per cent. But today as we close out on this project, we are leaving Gombe State with 17 per cent even when Government’s target is 20 per cent. This is a plus but it doesn’t mean the advocacy platform is closed”.

He explained that, “the improvement we are talking about now is that we have more women accessing child spacing or family planning services and we were able to reduce the maternal mortality rate of women in that regard”.

He said even with the close out of the project funded by Pathfinder International, “activities will continue with series of advocacies and interactions with stakeholders towards the uptake of Child Spacing services towards making sure that we reduce the maternal mortality rate of our dear State”.

Alhassan Yahaya however said that despite the improvement in the CPR, ” our unmet needs are still high. Women expecting to be pregnant but cannot be accessed and given consumables or commodities to use for the family planning or child spacing is still a challenge”.

Advocacy Working Group (AWG) is one of the strong voices of like minds in Gombe State comprising CSO”s, Media, Religious and Traditional institutions who come together to address, through advocacies and other activities, different kinds of disaster that is being faced in Gombe State.

Osun Guber: You Are Not God To Determine My Principal’s Fate’ — Oyetola’s Aide Tells Aregbesola

0

By Joseph Edegbo :

The Chief Press Secretary to Osun Governor, Ismail Omipidan, has declared that former Governor of the State and Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, is not God and therefore, cannot determine the fate of his principal, Adegboyega Oyetola.

He said this on Tuesday while fielding questions from journalists in Ila, on the sidelines of the Ila Federal Constituency stakeholders’ meeting.

According to him: “the general belief among most Africans that ‘a man’s life is preordained and ruled by God’ has continued to play out in the political trajectory of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun.

“From 2011 when he was appointed Chief of Staff to 2018 when, against all odds, he emerged, first as the candidate of the APC, and later, Governor of the State, at a time when many thought it was all over for him, it was obvious that he was on a divine political course.

“My Principal has absolute faith in God and the people of Osun. In these last three years plus, the people can tell the difference in terms of responsible and responsive governance and politics.

“Before we came in, Osun West was literally neglected in terms of infrastructure. But since we came in, we have done roads that had been abandoned for close to 20 years in that district. This, perhaps, explains why leaders and critical stakeholders from the area are already appealing to themselves to allow Oyetola take another shot at the governorship for the second term.

“Just about a week ago, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, charged the people of the town to vote for incumbent Governor Oyetola.

“Oluwo, who advised his subjects not to waste their resources and energy working against the re-election bid of the governor, said only those who are not interested in the growth and development of the town in particular and Osun State in general would want to run against Oyetola.

“The royal father said by the special Grace of God and the support of the people of Osun, Oyetola will be re-elected to consolidate the achievements he has so far recorded. Now, Aregbesola’s anointed candidate is from Iwo. So you be the judge.

“As the 2022 governorship contest draws closer, like the saying goes, there is no point comparing the sun with the moon, both shine when it is their time. For now, it’s Oyetola’s sun that is shining by the permission and Grace of God and the power of the people of Osun. And as the majority are already saying, this sun will shine beyond 2022.

“Therefore, it is God and Osun people that will determine Oyetola’s fate, not an individual trying to play God,” Omipidan said.
