A Nigerian actress and producer, Mide Martins has described filmmaking as a platform to pass messages across to people, and not just about making money.

Martins was reacting to how an online TV channel uploaded an uncompleted version of her upcoming movie.

“Movie-making is not just about making money, it’s about passing a message across to people. Part two of my movie, ‘Onitemi’ was uploaded and it was an uncompleted version.

“For me, it is a total waste of effort because they said they have to remove some scenes in the movie which is not right. So, the film has been pulled down because I want the full version of the movie to be uploaded,” 42-year-old Martins lamented, while shedding tears.

“I’m not fine and I don’t know how to hide it. I’m sure a lot of people will be wondering what is happening to me.”

Mide Martins is married to a popular movie director, Afeez Abiodun.

As the Muslim faithful across the globe begin the Ramadan fasting and prayers, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi has felicitated with the entire Faithful reassuring them of the commitment of the Corps towards making the roads safe for the motoring public during the Holy Month.

Oyeyemi thanked the Almighty Allah for protecting the lives of the people and giving them the grace to witness this year’s Ramadan which has been a season of high spiritual exercise that calls for sober reflection and recommitment to safety ideals.

In a statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, the Corps Marshal enjoined all participating Muslims to embark on this year’s Ramadan fast with greater consciousness and pray for God’s mercy, guidance and protection as well as avail themselves solemnly to the teachings of Ramadan.

He assured Nigerians that the Corps will continually remain steadfast in achieving its vision of creating safer road environment for all road users through effective collaboration with all security agencies and relevant stakeholders in the road transportation industry. The Corps Marshal reiterated his earlier call on Nigerians to fully obey all road traffic regulations established by the Government for the maintenance of sanity on the roads.

Kazeem added that the Corps Marshal also directed Commanding Officers to activate all operational facilities in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure that the roads are safe and secured for all to use.

Concluding his Ramadan message, Oyeyemi admonished all motorists to imbibe patience, tolerance and also show special consideration to other road users in the spirit of the Ramadan fast in order to create a peaceful atmosphere for all during the period and beyond.

He wished all participating faithful a happy and safe Ramadan fast, reminding members of the public to always tune in to the National Traffic Radio 107.1 FM for real time traffic update and road safety education and also endeavour to call the FRSC call centre through the toll free line: 122 to report any emergencies.

170 Churches Shut, Killings Continuing In Northeast – Nigerian Church

A Nigerian Church, Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN), a.k.a. Church of the Brethren in Nigeria, says its members are being killed and abducted despite the Government’s claim that it has uncovered sponsors of insurgency.

“Nothing seems to improve. We have become vulnerable in the hands of kidnappers, Boko Haram and ritual killers. Nigerians have never been barbaric and in a state of anarchy like this!” EYN President, Rev Joel Stephen Billi, said while addressing members on security situation of Nigeria, at the 75th Assembly of the Church in its headquarters in Kwarhi, Adamawa State.

Rev. Billi who questioned Government’s claim of having unearthed sponsors of insurgency asked, “If truly the Federal Government is fighting insurgency and has uncovered the sponsors, why is the war endless?

The Church which draws most of its membership from Adamawa and Borno states says insurgents have continually attacked its worship centres and other assets, with 170 branch churches mostly in Borno State remaining shut.

According to it, insecurity is worsening and the church continues to be a major victim in terms of the killing of its members, destruction of local church branches and loss of revenue.

Speaking with journalists, General Secretary of the EYN, Rev Daniel Mbaya, said the security situation had not improved since last year when the church held its last 74th Annual General Council Meeting.

“Many of our members were abducted recently and we have not heard about them. Many of our people cannot go to their farms. The situation is still terrible.

“Over 170 churches that insurgency forced to close are yet to open. We have four District churches behind the Gwoza mountains (in Borno State) that are still closed,” Mbaya said,

Nigeria: How Terrorists Pushed Kaduna To The Edge

By Lami Sadiq and Mohammed I. Yaba

Road, rail and air transport are being threatened due to the activities of non-state actors that have continued to hold Kaduna State, the administrative and political capital of northern Nigeria hostage.

Kaduna has been under siege for the last 10 days. From the attacks and killings of over 50 residents in nine communities of Giwa Local Government Area and the abduction of dozens last Friday, to last Sunday’s killing of one person, and the attempted security breach of the airport in the state, security sources said it appeared that terrorists were regrouping to hold Kaduna to ransom.

Monday’s bombing and killings, as well as the abduction of passengers on the Abuja-Kaduna train, are considered as the most daring and well-coordinated attack on the state in recent months. The attack, which derailed an 8pm Kaduna-bound train, which had earlier left Idu train station in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), had claimed nine lives, with a yet to be known number of people still in captivity.

According to the train passenger manifest, 398 passengers had bought tickets for the last batch of Monday’s Abuja-Kaduna trip, although 362 had been validated as having boarded the train.

The attack on the rail line, compounded by the recent temporary withdrawal of air services by Azman and Air Peace, the only two carriers that shuttle Kaduna, has placed the state in what experts call a “closed economy.”

This is already forcing a drop in economic and social activities, as the state government, on Thursday postponed the second edition of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs’) summit earlier scheduled for April 5.

Frequent attacks around airport, rail line and roads

In the last few years, terrorist activities have increased around Chikun, Birnin Gwari, Giwa and Igabi local government areas of Kaduna State, considered frontline areas in the state. The 150-kilometer Kaduna-Abuja highway and the 186km standard gauge rail line that link Kaduna to the FCT intersect Chikun and Kachia local government areas from the Kaduna axis and are considered one of the most dangerous routes in northern Nigeria.

Security sources said that due to forest enclaves in Chikun and its border links to other insecurity-prone local government areas in Niger State, bandits freely crisscross both land and rail areas.

“In the past, the attention of these terrorists was on the Kaduna-Abuja Highway because the road remained the cheapest means of transportation. But when people began to rely more on the rail line, the bandits made their first attempt by planting explosives on the track in October 2021. They may not have achieved their aim at that time, but they certainly got our attention,” said a security source in Kaduna.

The Kaduna airport, on the other hand, is located within the vicinity of Afaka and Mando in Igabi Local Government Area, which borders the three frontline areas of Chikun, Birnin Gwari and Giwa.

Multiple attacks have taken place within the vicinity, including the abduction of students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, the attack on the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA), as well as multiple attacks on the staff quarters of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

A Kaduna-based security analyst, Awwal Abdullahi Aliyu, described the various attacks in the last few days as systematic as the terrorists used the art of guerrilla warfare to attack soft targets.

“With the attack on the airport, security agencies should have known that the rail line would be the next target and should have beefed up security.

“Necessary intelligence-gathering technique should have been beefed up. There was a serious lapse, either in terms of getting intelligence or acting on the intelligence provided,” he said.

Why Kaduna-Abuja corridor remains unsafe

The 61-kilometre link road between Katari and Rijana, both in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State has become the most notorious point of attacks against road users.

A commercial driver at the Mando park in Kaduna, Muhammad Ibrahim, explained that although commercial drivers who frequented the Kaduna-Abuja route had identified Olam to Rijana, down to Gadan Malam Mamman and Katari as flashpoint areas, the most dangerous spots are found between Rijana and Katari.

“The same axis is equally a dangerous spot for the Abuja-Kaduna train corridor. Remember, from the Abuja-Kaduna road, you can see the rail line, especially once you start to approach Kaduna. It is more visible at night when you can see the lights from the train and hear the sound,” one of the train drivers at Kaduna’s Rigasa railway station said.

Our correspondent reports that although poorly fenced with blocks, several portions of the 186km Kaduna-Abuja track have either been abandoned or the fence collapsed. Several piles of blocks, some broken, were equally seen at some spots where the fence should have been completed.

Daily Trust Saturday reports that this is why there has been clamour for government and security agencies to take steps against the activities of terrorists lurking around the Katari and Rijana axis. Many have accused the communities of either harbouring terrorists or breeding informants.

Awwal Abdullahi Aliyu said although new security strategy and synergy among Nigeria’s security agencies and communities along those corridors were needed, action must be taken on the Katari-Rijana spot.

“There is the need to either site a strong and permanent military formation in that area or bring down the whole of Jere, Katari and Rijana axis since it has become the operational ground for these terrorists in the last six years. Somebody or some groups of people are either accommodating them or giving them information,” he said.

Alhaji Bello Rijana, an elder in Rijana community, told Daily Trust Saturday that the people of those communities were equally victims of attacks and oftentimes suffer the wrath of the terrorists. He said it was not until 2am on Tuesday that word reached the community that the Kaduna-bound train had been attacked, a few kilometres from Audu Jangwam community.

“We are equally under constant attacks by these people. A few days ago, they surrounded our community but God did not give them the success to penetrate our defences. They have surrounded parts of Rijana from the eastern part through Chikun and Kajuru to the western part through Niger State. We equally want security agents to move in and dislodge them,” he said.

He also said that five days ago, the terrorists killed a member of the community and abducted his wife and children, adding that in recent times, their activities had been on the rise as they go as far as Akilubu within Kachia Local Government Area to abduct residents.

“Our people who go to the forest to get firewood sometimes say they see them travelling in their hundreds. Sometimes they tell them that they are not their target, and instead, dispose them of their food and other items. But recently, they abduct anyone they come across,” he said.

Insecurity forcing Kaduna into a ‘closed economy’ – Expert

“These attacks are turning Kaduna into a fearful zone. People would not want to come to the state because it is being identified as one of the most dangerous, in terms of banditry and kidnapping,” said Awwal Aliyu while analysing insecurity and its likely effect on social and economic activities of the people.

Analysing the economic impact of the suspension of commercial air services by airline operators and the immobilisation of the Kaduna-Abuja train amidst a high security-prone road service, a professor of Economics in the Kaduna State University, Seth Akutson, said Kaduna was running a closed economy.

“The challenge we are having now is what, in management, you can call logistic and supply chain. In economics it is called distribution; and if distribution is cut off, the economy is dead, and any economy that is not on the move is as good as dead.

“The roads have been having challenges for years. The only time it was free was when there was a transfer of airline services from Abuja to Kaduna.

“The train, which was the only solace, is now immobilised, so what else remains of an economy?

“As the third largest city after Lagos and Kano, with a population of about 10million people, the government of Kaduna has built infrastructure and malls, but if there is no security, such things cannot attract patronage,” Akutson said.

He further noted that based on Adam Smith’s doctrine of an open economy, what is now obtainable in Kaduna is a closed economy, which will likely affect survival, income distribution, work and the private sector.

“The banks are already closing early because of fuel challenges, so the state is in motion without movement,” he said.

Meanwhile, on Friday, fear gripped residents of the Shanono area of Kaduna State after residents found another suspected improvised explosive device (IED).

The object was found concealed in a jerry can, just 24 hours after the residents discovered an IED inside a plastic bucket covered with Sellotape in the same community and spot on Thursday morning.

The device was later detonated by the state anti-bomb squad and no casualty was recorded.

A resident, Tijjani Umar, told Daily Trust that children discovered the jerry can covered with black cellophane near a stream.

“It was kept on the same spot where the Thursday IED was discovered. We don’t know what is happening in this community. It was my elder brother’s wife that rushed to inform me that the children found another bomb inside a jerry can,” he said.

Daily Trust gathered that security agencies were deployed to the scene while hundreds of residents watched from a distance.

When contacted, the State Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Jalige, confirmed the discovery, saying the anti-bomb squad has been mobilized to the area to defuse the device.

He urged people to be more vigilant wherever they are in the state.

Ghanaian Lawyer Seeks Court to Stop Extraditing Nigerian to the US

Court Gavel & Scales (Credit: fen church law)

By Sunday Elijah

A Ghanaian lawyer, Ralph Poku Adusei, has approached an Accra High Court seeking to stop the authorities from extraditing his Nigerian client, Blessing Adeleke Oluwadamilare, from Ghana to the United States of America (USA).

Blessing Adeleke Oluwadamilare, a.k.a Raymond (the Applicant), is said to be wanted in the US for various offences including conspiracy to defraud and defrauding by false pretences.

The filed affidavit by the applicant states that on August 13, 2020, a federal grand jury sitting in the Northern District of Ohio indicted and charged him with violations of US law.

Consequently, it issued an arrest warrant for the apprehension and extradition of Blessing Oluwadamilare.

Due to the requisition order from the US, Ghana’s Minister for the Interior, acting through the Ghana Police Service, Interpol Division, in exercising its powers under the Extradition Act 1960, Act 22, caused the arrest of the applicant at the Kotoka International Airport on the 12 March 2022.

Oluwadamilare was put before the Kaneshie District Court and he was admitted to bail on Tuesday, March 15, in the sum GHC 200,000.00 with two sureties.

The court fixed April 4, 2022 for hearing.

Oluwadamilare, after meeting the bail conditions on March 18, was re-arrested and on March 22 and re-arraigned before a different district court that is “The District Court Kaneshie, Court “2”, the affidavit said.

After a two-day hearing of the extradition case, the court ordered for the Extradition of the Applicant on March 23, 2022 without recourse to the earlier suit.

The suit is titled case no. B1/29/22 The Republic versus Blessing Adeleke Oluwadamilare Alias Raymond: In the matter of Extradition of Blessing Adeleke Oluwadamilare Alias Raymond, the applicant’s affidavit filed at the High Court registry today 1 April 2022.

“I am advised and believe same to be true that the suit initiated earlier in the District Court Kaneshie “Court 1” was neither withdrawn nor discontinued before the initiation of the second suit,” it said.

“The initiation of the second case without withdrawing the earlier case is a nullity and renders any proceedings thereafter null and void ab initio since a court of coordinate jurisdiction cannot hear the same matter pending before another court.”

Counsel for Oluwadamilare contended that the second court erred when it “proceeded to determine the extradition matter, even though it lacked jurisdiction because the earlier suit stood adjourned to 4th April 2022”.

The applicant, therefore, proceeded to the High Court seeking three reliefs.

First, the applicant is seeking “an order of Certiorari directed at the District Court Kaneshie, Court 2 to bring up into this Honourable High Court for the purposes of being quashed and quashing the entire proceedings of the 23 March 2022 and the Extradition order duly decreed by his Lordship Oheneba-Kuffour and dated the 23 March 2022 for want of jurisdiction in the suit.

Second, the applicant is praying the High Court for “an order directed at the Respondents (Attorney General, Ghana Police Service) to respect and uphold the terms of the decision, ruling and/or orders of the District Court dated the 15th March, 2022, 5 presided over by her Ladyship Ms Ama Adomako-Kwakye in District Court Kaneshie, Court 1”.

Third, the applicant is “a consequential order directed at the interested parties to respect the decision, ruling and/or orders of the District Court dated the 15 March 2022 presided over by her Ladyship Ms Ama Adomako-Kwakye in District Court Kaneshie, Court 1.”

South Africa Extends Grace Period Deadline For Expired Driver’s Licences

South African Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula

By Sunday Elijah

The Department of Transport has again extended the grace period for renewing expired driving licences to 15 April 2021.

This comes as the deadline for the renewal of expired driving licences ended on 31 March 2022.

In August 2021, Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, announced the extension of learner’s licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences, and professional driving permits for a grace period ending on 31 March 2022.

This was part of government measures in response to the lockdown in the management of COVID-19.

Updating the media on the deadline for the extension of licence validity in Midrand on Friday, Mbalula said after consultation with MECs and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), the department has decided to extend the grace period of the validity of driving licences, which expired between 26 March 2020 and 31 August 2021, to 15 April 2022.

He said the number of driving licence cards, for which renewal applications are still to be made, stands at 1 424 756, a reduction from 2 813 016.

“This means that only 49% of the affected motorists have applied for renewal of their expired driving licences… Motorists are not coming forward to renew their licences for a variety of reasons.

“As of 28 March 2022, we had produced 628 150 driving licence cards, reducing the backlog of cards to be printed to 522 839. This is in respect of those who have already applied to renew their licences,” Mbalula said.

Over 74 000 bookings made in Gauteng and Eastern Cape

Mbalula said during the month of March, over 74 000 bookings were made in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape… while a further 24 000 booking slots were not taken up.

In the Western Cape, out of 403 507 expired licences, 218 286 driving licences have been renewed, representing 54.1% renewal.

In the Northern Cape, 26 382 driving licences have been renewed, 52 284 expired licences, representing 50.5% renewal.

However, Mbalula said five provinces remain below 50% of renewal. These include the Free State, with only 65 551 driving licences renewed, out of 134 917 expired licences, representing 48.6% renewal.

Operating hours extended to weekends

The Minister also announced that the department has agreed with the MECs that they will extend the operating hours of the driving licence testing centre (DLTCs) in different provinces and open over weekends.

“The DLCA [Driving Licence Card Account] is already operating 24 hours a day to produce cards, with approval having been granted by the DPSA [Department of Public Service and Administration] for tjem to exceed the 30% cap on overtime,” he said.

Research on possible changes to renewal period underway

Meanwhile, Mbalula announced that the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has been commissioned to undertake research on possible changes to the renewal periods.

“The research will look at the co-relation between the renewal period and safety on our roads and what factors should be taken into account if we are to revise the current five-year validity period.  This work is already underway, and will be concluded by 30 April 2022.

“Various countries on the continent have renewal periods that range from two to five years, and a number of other countries require renewal at anything from six to 15 years, while others have integrated the driving licence into their identity cards,” the Minister explained.

He reiterated his call to motorists to come forward and renewed their driving licences to avoid penalties on the road.

An Open Letter to the New Chairman of APC, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu

0
APC

I’m excited to join the legion of well-wishers rushing to celebrate your victory at the recent convention of the All Progressives Congress. As the new chairman of what’s arguably the largest political party in Africa, the tasks ahead are understandably daunting, but your choice in this critical time is a divine intervention and may your leadership serve as a conduit to the stability and harmony for which we have been yearning to deliver on our electoral promises to the people of Nigeria.

I count myself extraordinarily lucky, above all, to have enjoyed sustained interactions with you, benefiting from your mentorship in the early days of my career. So, I’m advantaged to testify to your courage, honesty, suavity and extensive experience in leading a diverse group or entity. Your unifying trait is enthralling and has made you a model, earning you the well-deserved nickname—The Bridge.

No bits of my memories of your leadership and interventions in Nigerian dynamic politics are uninspiring, and you were generous in sharing your experience with us to guide our journey into the terrain. One of such lessons was during my stint as a member of your core team during your presidential bid sixteen years ago, which was guided by a strong desire to make a difference in Nigeria.

I was by far the youngest member of your team but you insisted on my attendance of all meetings and participation in all activities as we transversed the length and breadth of this country and beyond to market the beautiful dream you promised Nigerians. It was a valuable learning curve and, most importantly, it gave me an opportunity to witness your confidence in the potential of our youths and convictions in their political and intellectual capability.

I was utterly privileged to reconnect with you again in the 7th, 8th and 9th National Assembly, and it was a pleasant coincidence that we were part of the leaders in the 7th Assembly that coordinated the unprecedented defection of over 80 sitting senators and members of the House of Representatives from the PDP to add strength to the APC ahead of the 2015 general elections at huge personal risk. It was a decisive and audacious move never seen in the political history of our country.

Similarly, in the 8th Assembly, you were the Chairman of the Pro-Buhari Parliamentary Support Group in the Senate while I was the Chairman of the parallel Group in the House of Representatives. These offered us the avenues to mobilize members of the National Assembly towards ensuring maximum support for President Muhammadu Buhari under your guidance. In the 9th Assembly, we sustained the momentum, worked day and night, and made huge sacrifices to ensure that Senators-elect and Members-elect toed the party line in the election of Senate President, Speaker of the House and other principal officers.

Mr Chairman, Sir, this brief rehash of political history is to underline that you have paid your dues and swam against all forms of political tides. An Engineer, lawyer, former party chairman, former chairman of NTA and Benue cement, member constituent Assembly and constitutional conference (1979, 1994), Minister, Governor, Senator and renowned farmer, the list is endless.

Your credentials are inimitable and this trail of your records across various spheres of our national life makes your traditional titles— Sarkin Yakin Keffi and presently Turakin Keffi—worthy, for you have always believed in our traditional institutions.

I know you close enough to testify to your valour and values: pragmatic in your approach to issues and a reliable problem-solver; a capable hand and a war general. No wonder you have never lost an election in the 40 years of your political career. With ease, I can say APC is in safe hands. I have no doubt that you will bring to bear your knowledge and experience in carrying out this huge responsibility on your shoulders and lead our great party towards progress and prosperity.

Congratulations Congratulations once again, Sir.

Allah SWT YA taya riko. Amin.

Your son,

Hon Abdulmumin Jibrin
