El-Kurebe: A Catalyst for Agricultural Transformation in West Africa -By Abdul-Azeez Suleiman

0

In a world increasingly defined by its complexities and interconnections, the role of journalism transcends mere reporting; it becomes a powerful tool for advocacy and change. Within this dynamic landscape, Abdallah El-Kurebe emerges as a paragon of excellence, embodying the qualities of brilliance, respect, and a touch of fortuitous timing.

As the Editor-in-Chief of ASHENEWS, a prominent Nigerian online platform, and a seasoned health and environment journalist, El-Kurebe’s recent appointment as the Nigeria Country Coordinator for the newly established Network of Journalists for the Promotion of Agrosylvopastoral Products in West Africa and the Sahel (ReJPAH-AOS) marks a significant milestone not only in his career but also in the broader context of agricultural journalism and regional development.

The official launch of ReJPAH-AOS during the Constitutive General Assembly held on July 3 and 4 at the Concorde Hotel in Lomé, Togo, heralds a new chapter in the promotion of regional agricultural trade. This initiative, supported by the West African Association for Cross-Border Trade in Agro-Sylvo-Pastoral and Fisheries Products (AOCTAH), aims to bolster agricultural systems, enhance cross-border trade, and elevate the visibility of grassroots stakeholders.
The network’s mission is not merely to inform but to transform—the very essence of effective journalism in the 21st century.

El-Kurebe’s extensive experience in agricultural reporting positions him uniquely to lead this initiative. His deep understanding of the intricacies of health, environment, and agricultural practices equips him with the insights necessary to navigate the challenges that lie ahead. The region of West Africa, characterized by its rich agricultural potential, is also beset by formidable obstacles such as malnutrition affecting approximately 23 million people, the pervasive impacts of climate change, and the specter of food insecurity exacerbated by global disruptions. In this context, El-Kurebe’s leadership is not just timely; it is essential.

The network’s objectives resonate profoundly with the pressing needs of the region. By fostering inclusive and transformative communication, ReJPAH-AOS seeks to enhance the flow of information among stakeholders. This is particularly crucial in a landscape where farmers, traders, and consumers often operate in silos, disconnected from the broader agricultural ecosystem. El-Kurebe’s role as a coordinator will involve not only disseminating information but also facilitating dialogues that bridge these gaps. His commitment to respectful engagement with diverse communities will be instrumental in building trust and fostering collaboration among stakeholders.

Moreover, the harmonization of trade policies stands out as a pivotal goal of the network. In a region marked by varying regulations and practices, the establishment of coherent policies can significantly streamline cross-border agricultural commerce. El-Kurebe’s journalistic acumen will play a critical role in advocating for policy reforms that benefit local farmers and traders, ensuring that their voices are heard in the corridors of power.
By leveraging his platform, he can amplify the narratives of those who are often marginalized in discussions about agricultural trade and policy.

The transformative potential of informed journalism cannot be overstated. In an era where misinformation can spread rapidly, the responsibility of journalists to provide accurate, reliable, and insightful information is more crucial than ever. El-Kurebe’s appointment to ReJPAH-AOS aligns with a broader vision of empowering journalists to act as agents of change. By equipping journalists with the tools and knowledge necessary to report on agricultural issues effectively, the network aims to create a cadre of informed storytellers who can advocate for sustainable practices and equitable trade.

In addition to addressing immediate challenges, El-Kurebe’s leadership in this network embodies a long-term vision for agricultural resilience in West Africa. The region’s capacity to adapt to climate change and ensure food security hinges on the collective efforts of its stakeholders. By fostering a culture of collaboration and knowledge-sharing, ReJPAH-AOS under El-Kurebe’s guidance can catalyze innovative solutions that harness local resources and expertise. This approach not only empowers communities but also paves the way for sustainable agricultural practices that can withstand the test of time.

As we reflect on Abdallah El-Kurebe’s journey, it becomes evident that his brilliance is not merely a product of his individual achievements but is also a reflection of his commitment to uplifting others. His respect for the communities he serves, coupled with his strategic vision, positions him as a beacon of hope in a region grappling with significant challenges.

The Network of Journalists for the Promotion of Agrosylvopastoral Products in West Africa and the Sahel stands to benefit immensely from his leadership, as it embarks on a mission to transform agricultural journalism and promote regional agricultural trade.

Nigeria is set to host its first National Steel Summit to rebuild and unlock the country’s steel potential.

The summit is expected to position Nigeria as a leading steel hub in Sub-Saharan Africa and significantly boost the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuiabu Abubakar, revealed this at a news conference on Thursday in Abuja, ahead of the summit.

The summit with the theme `Rebuilding and Consolidating Nigeria’s Steel Industry: Collaborative Action for Sustainable Growth and Global Competitiveness` is scheduled to hold from July 16 to 17 in Abuja.

Abubakar said the summit would provide a platform for stakeholders in the sector to appraise the current status of the industry and explore investment opportunities.

He said they would also identify policy and infrastructure gaps and adopt a common roadmap for the revival and sustainable growth of Nigeria’s steel sector.

According to him, stakeholders will have a common platform to discuss areas of mutual collaboration, especially in market promotion and shared infrastructure to boost competitive production.

He said that the administration of President Bola Tinubu was determined to ensure the emergence of a virile steel industry in Nigeria, especially given the country’s abundant raw materials available in commercial quantities nationwide.

He explained that the government’s mandate includes repositioning the sector to reduce heavy imports by promoting local processing, as well as strengthening the industry’s presence in local and international markets.

The minister added that the summit would further guide the government on its mandate to set and monitor standards for steel products to prevent structural failures in Nigeria’s construction sector.

“The present Renewed Hope Administration of President Bola Tinubu is already pushing the right buttons to ensure the emergence of a virile steel industry in Nigeria along these key mandate instructions

“That the utilisation of the abundant Steel Raw Materials in Nigeria for the  substitution of imported Steel products which has been draining our  foreign exchange to the tune of over 4Billion US dollars per annum.

“That we enthrone a regulatory regime that would ensure sustainable Steel and Non-Ferrous Metals production in Nigeria for both local and international markets.

“That we set and monitor quality standards for local and foreign steel products to eradicate structural failures in different construction projects in Nigeria.

“This will generate massive employment for our teeming youths and promote technology transfer for Nigeria’s economic development, “ he said.

According to him, in the past 20 months, the Tinubu administration is already recording notable milestones, vigor in the resuscitation of the assets such as the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL) and the National Iron Ore Mining Company.

He explained that the government has awarded a contract for the technical and financial audit of the ASLC, which has already commenced.

He said the report was expected to determine the exact current state of the Ajaokuta company and the resources required to revive it after more than 20 years in a comatose state.

Abubakar noted that the Tinubu`s administration was implementing economic policies which was renewing investors’ confidence in the sector.

He said that this has led to the Stellar Steel Company Limited committing investment of 400Million US dollars for the establishment of Steel facility for the production of hot rolled coils/plates.

Similarly, he said, the Orbit Fabrication/Galvanising Works Limited had unveiled a 50,000tonnes galvanising plant valued at about $100 million amongst other new investments into the sector.

According to the minister, the technical sessions and panel discussions during the event will examine critical areas of the industry from diverse perspectives, including requirements to resuscitation  of the country’s legacy steel projects.

The minister stated that repositioning the steel industry would have a multiplier effect on Nigeria’s economy, benefiting sectors such as construction, automobile and  manufacturing among others.

Northern Unity: Bafarawa Champions Cohesion For Regional Socio-economic Development

0

….Prepares Comprehensive Blueprint For Advancement Of North, Nigeria

The prevailing socio-economic and political challenges in the North in particular, has necessitated the birth of a movement, “Area Cohesion For Peace, Unity and Development Initiative”, championed by former governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa and unveiled on Thursday in Kaduna.

The unveiling of the movement on Thursday in Kaduna, according to Bafarawa, marks the beginning of a journey towards healing divisions, fostering understanding and nurturing sustainable development in the region that is more than geographical expression.

Bafarawa who is the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the movement, identified some of the challenges confronting them as a people, to include communal conflicts, rising insecurity, youth restiveness, economic marginalisation and gradual erosion of the values that once held them together.
It was against these backgrounds, he said, the movement tailored its mission to promote peaceful coexistence among diverse communities in the North, create platforms for dialogue, reconciliation and conflict resolution.
Others are to engage youths, work collectively with governments, traditional and faith based institutions, CSOs and international partners towards a safer, stronger and more inclusive North.

Bafarawa however made it clear that the movement is not political and doesn’t intend to transform into a political party or do they align with any.
” Our mission transcends partisan politics. We are ready to work with anyone regardless of political affiliation, who shares our commitment to transforming Arewa and Nigeria for the better.
We are ready to collaborate with any organisation that has similar objectives as ours.
While our Movement remains non- partisan in character, we recognise that our members are free to pursue their individual political aspirations beyond the confines of the Initiative”, he explains.

Bafarawa announced that the movement has prepared a comprehensive Blueprint for the North and Nigeria, a road map born from careful study and deep reflection on the region’s potential

He therefore affirmed the Movement’s unwavering focus on the collective interests of the North and its people, rising above political divisions that had for too long hindered their progress.

In his opening remarks, the Director General of the Movement, Dr. Abdullahi Idris said the Movement was initiated having been convinced that the challenges facing the region could only be addressed through genuine collaboration, mutual understanding and a common agenda for peace and development.
“The Arewa Cohesion Initiative is therefore a timely and strategic effort that seeks to foster dialogue where there is silence, rebuild trust where it has been eroded, and create opportunities where there have been too few. It’s built on three interlinked pillars: peacebuilding, Arewa  unity and sustainable development,” Dr. Idris emphasized.
He advised that as they look to the future, they must resist the temptation of short- term thinking. “The problems we face today were not created overnight and they will also not be resolved overnight. But with patience, coordination and sustained commitment, transformation is possible” , he said.
Unveiling the Movement, the Chairman of the occasion and a retired General, Jon Temlong praised Bafarawa for thinking of what he could do for his country and not the country could do for him after retiring from politics .
The Initiative, Temlong said, embodies the timeliness value that has always defined them as a people with spirit of brotherhood, commitment to justice and belief in the power of unity and strength.
General Temlong reminded the leadership of the Movement that they carry with them, the hopes of millions adding that the unveiling marks the beginning of a journey that would be remembered as the turning point in the Northern region’s quest for lasting peace and sustainable development.
The event which witnessed a convergence of people especially from the Northern part of the country was held at the historical Arewa House, Kaduna.

The Federal Government has commenced the training of its workforce to implement and upgrade social standards across various sectors.

The initiative is aimed at addressing weak compliance with social safeguards and bridging gaps in inclusive, rights-based development.

Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Minister of Women Affairs (FMoWA), said this on Wednesday in Abuja at the Social Standards Node training under the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (SPESSE) project.

The training, organised by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, and the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, is supported by the World Bank.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim, who was represented by Mr Benjamin Okwesa, SPESSE Project Coordinator in the ministry, said the initiative would promote sustainable development, improve working conditions, and enhance the overall quality of life for Nigerians.

According to her, the Social Standards Node of the SPESSE project will enable the ministry and its implementing partners to address issues affecting vulnerable and disadvantaged groups.

“This is mainly due to the growing incidences of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), communal clashes, displacement from ancestral homes, land acquisition issues, and poor labour and working conditions.

“All of which are among the social risks and impacts this project aims to tackle.

“These deficiencies have continued to negatively impact the development of affected communities, devastating individuals, families, and households, thereby affecting their overall physical, social, psychological, and economic well-being,” she added.

Reiterating the commitment of the involved ministries, the minister noted that the initiative would strengthen the capacities of staff and practitioners in the Procurement, Environment, and Social Standards (PES) sectors in Nigeria.

“The project is focused on developing academic and certification programmes to ensure that practitioners in the Social Development, Procurement, and Environment sectors, including graduates from the six established Centres of Excellence, meet global standards to improve service delivery,” she said.

She explained that the training, being conducted by the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM), would provide participants with knowledge of short executive courses (Track A) and the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework (ESF).

“Ultimately, the training will qualify participants for certification as Social Standards Professionals.”

She urged participants to take full advantage of the initiative to contribute to national development and address pressing social challenges.

Also speaking, Dr Joshua Attah, SPESSE Project Coordinator, represented by Mr Peter Tobrise, Project Management Officer at the National Universities Commission (NUC), emphasised the importance of the training in building workers’ capacity.

“This experience will broaden your horizon and enhance your ability to tackle real-world challenges in social safeguards.

“The success of this project depends largely on the commitment of participants here and beyond,” he said. (NAN)

Cooperative Society Seeks Enforcement of On-site Mineral Processing by Investors

By Martha Agas

A women miners group, Success Mining Multipurpose Cooperative Society, has called on the Federal Government to direct foreign investors to establish mineral processing plants in the areas where they extract resources.

The Nasarawa-based group said that the move would promote rural development, create jobs and reduce the export of raw minerals without value addition

The leader of the group, Mrs Patience Isaac, made the call in interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to her, mining companies should contribute to the development of host communities by constructing roads and providing electricity and water infrastructure.

“We want the government to mandate foreign investors to build their factories in the mining area for final products instead of always exporting the raw materials to their country.

“They should build roads, supply electricity and provide water for the communities where mining activities are carried out,” she said.

She said that many mining sites were being sold to foreign investors, making it difficult for local miners, particularly women, to access the sites and the minerals for processing and sale.

“We want the government to help us stop allocating mining sites to foreign investors, or at least provide alternative opportunities for those of us who are directly involved in the sector,” she said.

Isaac urged the government to support women miners with equipment that would enable them to expand their operations and participate more effectively in the sector.

She said that women miners faced difficulties in accessing microcredit facilities, and urged the government to provide medical centres in mining communities to address their healthcare needs.

NAN recalls that the Minister of Solid Mineral Development, Dr Dele Alake, in 2024 announced that licence would no longer be granted to mining companies without comprehensive plan for value addition.
