Obama To African Leaders: Stop Overstaying In Office

0

Kaduna (Nigeria) – US President, Barack Obama has warned his African colleagues against refusing to step down after the expiration of their term in office, saying such refusal could deter development on the continent.

Obama gave the warning at the African Union’s headquarters, Addis Ababa. at the end of his two East African nation (Kenya and Ethiopia).

This is the first time a sitting US president has addressed the 54 member body of the union.

He said the continent would not advance when leaders overstayed their term in office, stating that nobody is above the law, or should be president for life.

He tasked the AU to ensure leaders respect their constitutions and step down when they are due; making reference to Burundi, whose president, Pierre Nkurunziza has controversially been re-elected for a third term.

Obama further added that, “Sometimes you will hear leaders say ‘I’m the only person who can hold this nation together.’ If that’s true, then that leader has failed to truly build their nation.”

The U.S President also pointed out that it is time for the world to change its approach to Africa, saying that he is a proud American and also a son of an African.

“A half century into this independence era, it is long past time to put aside old stereotypes of an African forever mired in poverty and conflict. The world must recognize Africa’s extraordinary progress.” He said.

Obama explained to the gathering his policy on renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act aimed at boosting trade and U.S. initiatives on food security, increasing access to electricity and supporting African entrepreneurs.

The U.S President had on Friday 24th July, 2015 embarked on a five day visit to Africa, starting with his father’s homeland Kenya, where he was received with much fanfare and adoration.

While in Nairobi, he also co-hosted the sixth annual Global Entrepreneurship Summit with Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta. They held bilateral talks on business development, security, human rights and LGBT equality.

In Kenya, Obama also said nothing will unlock Africa’s economic potential than tackling “the cancer of corruption.”

“In Africa, corruption drains billions of dollars from economies – money that could be used to create jobs and to build hospitals and schools. And when someone has to pay a bribe just to start a business or go to school or to get an official to do their job – that’s not “the African way” – it undermines the dignity of the people you represent.” he said.

Obama arrived Ethiopia on Monday morning, 26th July, 2015 at the National Palace in Addis Ababa, where he was received by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.

In Ethiopia, Obama met with African leaders including the AU chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, to discuss on regional terrorism and South Sudan’s civil war.

Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome and the Prime Minister expressed continued cooperation between their countries on trade and economic partnership, counter-terrorism and intelligence, and democratisation.

Kaduna (Nigeria) – A group of Beggars in Kaduna, northwest Nigeria, Monday threatened to bring down the administration of Governor Nasir El-Rufai for his decision to evacuate them from the street.

The beggars stormed the premises of Nigerian Union of Journalists, saying, they had used proceeds from begging to help enthrone El Rufai to power, but after ascension, the Governor is turning his back on them.

Addressing journalists, the beggars under the aegis of Kaduna State Beggars Association regretted voting El-Rufai for his decision on stopping them from having a means of livelihood without providing any alternative to them.

Spokesperson of the group, Yahaya Makaho, a visually impaired, narrated how he personally used his proceeds to campaign and mobilized support for El-Rufai in the April guber election, adding that others in the group had contributed and sacrificed in same manner.

He added that, “We decided to support El Rufai, because we were tired of the former Governor, who did not show any concern for our survival. We worked hard, spent money and prayed, God heard our cries and brought down Yero.

“Now, it would appear that we made a mistake. The new governor wants to bring us down by chasing us out of the street without providing any alternative for a means of survival.

He pointed out that some of them are the breadwinners of their families, but incapacitated, hence their reason to go out to beg.

“We are asking the governor to reverse his decision now, or find ways to meet our basic needs.

“If he refuses to heed to this demand, we shall make sure we bring down his government. We are not going to pray for him to die, nor he should be impeached, because we voted him to power, but we shall hand him over to the Almighty God, just the same way He removed the former person,” he added.

Two weeks ago, Northern Blind Forum suspended a plan legal action against Kaduna State Government for allegedly linking persons with disabilities in the state to the terrorists group, Boko Haram.

Publicity Secretary of the Forum, Muntari Sale told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Kaduna State Government had appealed to it to suspend the plan and engage in dialogue to address the matter.

Sale said the State government had pledged to address the challenges facing the group in the State.

NAN quoted Saleh saying “If by Tuesday, July 21, the Kaduna state government fails to stop the arrest of people with disabilities, our members from the 19 northern states will stage a massive protest in Kaduna to enforce our fundamental right of freedom of movement.

“We are not going to allow the discriminatory actions of the government to continue,” the forum’s spokesman said.

Kaduna State Government had after the July 7 Zaria suicide bomb attack announced total ban on street hawking and begging, as part of its enhanced security measures.

Kaduna (Nigeria) – The PEN Africa Network (PAN) has asked the Gambian President, Yahaya Jameh to facilitate the release of Aboulle Cessay, a Gambian radio Journalist, who has been in the custody of the security agents for over a week.

The group which protests the continued secret confinement of the journalist urged the president to investigate into the actions of the security agents.

Their position was made known in a statement by Secretary-General of the group, Dr Frankie Asare-Donkoh.

The statement says, “PEN is deeply concerned about the whereabouts of Aboulle Cessay who is the manager of the independent radio station Taranga FM who was abducted by Gambian security agents on July 17, barely four days after he had been released from captivity on July 13, 2015.

“We are further concerned that Cessay is been held purely in relation to his journalistic practice, which is in serious violation of his freedom of expression protected under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.”

“Accordingly, we call on the Gambian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Alagie Aboulle Cessay,” the statement added.

PDP To APC: Stop Dodging Issues, Nigerians Want Answers Not Insults

Abuja (Nigeria) – Nigeria’s opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop dodging issues and provide answers on government’s lack of transparency, abuse of power, dwindling economy, escalating insecurity and apparent failure in governance since it assumed power at the center.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, the PDP says insults by APC’s Spokesman Lai Mohammed cannot be a solution, because the PDP would never be cowed or distracted from providing robust and credible alternative views which it owes Nigerians.

Full Statement Below:
“Whilst we understand the desperation of Alhaji Lai Mohammed to remain relevant even without any influence of electoral success in his political career, at any level whatsoever, he and the APC must understand that being in government comes with demands of accountability, civility and decency.

“We appreciate the elementary knowledge of the APC spokesman in his new role especially against the backdrop of his struggling to impress two masters at a time, Bourdellion and the President, who distributes the largesse at the moment, but Nigerians expect that in his search for job, he should be decorous, mature and on the side of truth and accountability.

“However, going through the hurried response by the APC, it is clearly noted that the party did not address any of the issues raised by the PDP in its widely reported press conference on Sunday.

“The APC failed to address the issue of the recent organized public harassment and humiliation against the immediate-past First Lady and wife of the former President, Dame Patience Jonathan at the Port Harcourt airport obviously organized and orchestrated by the Director of Protocol in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Husseini, who cited ‘order from above’ in his direct threats and insults to the former First Lady on phone.

“Furthermore, the nation is still waiting for the APC and the Presidency to address the issue of the divisive and tendentious statement by President Buhari who declared to the world that he would run a discriminatory government based on voting pattern in the last general elections, in clear violation of his oath of office and the provisions of the constitution.

“Nigerians are still waiting for explanations on the embarrassments that characterized the President’s US visit, which instead of bringing gains, yielded only disagreements, accusations and exchanges between the Presidency and their American hosts.

“The Presidency and the APC are yet to address the issue of the disgraceful treatment meted out on some Nigerian bankers and captains of industries by the President during the visit as well as the absence of an economic team in an important meeting with US officials thereby robbing the nation of the benefits of the discussions.

“Nigerians are still waiting for answers on the issue of resort to sole administratorship by the President in managing of the affairs of the nation without proper recourse to statutory arms and organs of government as stipulated by the constitution. They are still waiting for explanations for the lack of policy direction that has left the nation’s economy in tatters with continued fall of the naira and agonizing loss in the capital market which has lost over N1.1 trillion in the last two months.

“The citizens are still awaiting clarifications on the important issue of the $2.1 billion loan the Presidency is taking from the World Bank for purposes yet unknown to the public and relevant arms of government. They want explanations on what the loan is for, what the terms are and who decides on how the money will be spent.

“The APC has failed to address our question on the handling of the nation’s resources in the last two month, where whereas the Presidency is unliterary depleting national resources in the name of bailout for states, state governors are on air announcing that they have not received any form of bailout whatsoever from the center.

“We restate our call for this government to come out clear on this loan as well as publicize details of its expenditure in the last two months. Instead of addressing the matter, the APC resorted to insults, which will never sway Nigerians from demanding for explanations.

“We had also raised the issue of intimidations and harassments of members of election tribunals in Rivers and some other states by the Director of DSS, ostensibly to secure judgments against the PDP. We expect answers from the APC on the fact of nepotism in the appointment of the Director of DSS and that of Mrs. Amina Zakari as Acting Chairman of INEC. Does it mean that appointments under the APC administration are now based on a nexus with the President or APC leaders either by consanguinity or affinity?”

“We demand for direct answers on issues. In this regard, we charge the APC and especially its spokesman, Alhaji Mohammed to settle down and strive to partner with us in elevating the national political discourse from the domain of insults to that of issues, so that the public, especially the younger generation of Nigerians would be adequately informed on national issues.
