Xenophobic Attack, Evidence of A Failed Administration – Nigeria Labour Congress

By Bello Adisa

Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC says South Africa’s xenophobic attack on Nigerians and other Africans is a reflection of a failed system of governance which is reflected by the worsening of poverty and unemployment indices.

NLC in a statement by its Deputy President, Issa Aremu condemned the attacks saying the serial xenophobic attacks on innocent African workers are grossly unwarranted, condemnable and unacceptable.

The Labour Union condemn the desperate and reckless actions of the jobless youths of South Africa.

The NLC warned that the unending disconnect between African governments and the governed can lead to the same situation in a country like Nigeria, particularly that statistics from International Labour Organization, ILO shows that both Nigeria and South Africa have high levels of unemployment rates of 23.9% and 24.3% in 2014 respectively.

The statement reads, “The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC hereby joins our counterpart Federation, the Congress of South African Trade Unions, COSATUU to condemn the reckless violent attacks on African working people and nationals in South Africa with unacceptable resultant avoidable destruction of lives and properties. The xenophobic attack had claimed several lives. The latest round of attacks was reportedly instigated by the Zulu King in the Kwazulunatal region in South Africa. It has since spread to other commercial cities like Durban and Johannesburg. Kindly note that similar attacks in January this year claimed several lives. In January, looters burned businesses owned by foreigners.

“In 2008, Seven years ago, in Johannesburg, anti-immigrant violence claimed many innocent lives. Most of the victims were Zimbabweans who had fled repression and dire economic circumstances. As many as 200 people were arrested on various charges, including rape, murder, robbery and theft.

“These serial xenophobic attacks on innocent African workers are grossly unwarranted, condemnable and unacceptable.

“Right to work is right to life. We believe that African workers have a right to seek legitimate work anywhere in the continent based on the dream and ideals set by the founding fathers such as Kwame Nkruma, Julius Nyerere, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nelson Mandela among others.

“The xenophobic attacks in South Africa is a reflection of the crisis of governance in Africa as reflected by the worsening poverty and unemployment rate in the continent.

“The ILO harmonized unemployment rate refers to those who are currently not working but are willing and able to work for pay, currently available to work, and have actively searched for work.

“The desperate and reckless actions of the jobless youths of South Africa are not unconnected with the unending disconnect between the governments and the governed in Africa. What is happening in South Africa can happen in Nigeria. According to the ILO both Nigeria and South Africa have high levels of unemployment rates of 23.9% and 24.3% in 2014 respectively. As many as 20,000 people have died in the Mediterranean sea en route to Europe.

“It is a clear indication of the level of bad governance going on everywhere in the continent.

“It is a very sad development that at a time the other continents are forging unity and economic integration, Africans are killing Africans in constant reckless xenophobic attacks.

“The Constitutive Act of the Africa Union (AU) launched in 2002 by the Heads of State and Government of the Member States of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) was INSPIRED by the noble ideals which guided the founding fathers of our Continental Organization and generations of Pan-Africanists in their determination to promote unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States. One notable objective of the AU is to promote and protect human and peoples’ rights in accordance with the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and other relevant human rights instruments.

“We hereby call on workers and millions of jobless youths to turn their anger on their government who have abandoned their duty to wealth and jobs creations and welfare for their citizens. To this extent NLC and COSATUU will partner to engage our governments on job creations that must start with re-industrialization of the continent.

“We therefore call on the African Union to prevail on the South African authorities to take immediate measures to protect and safeguard the lives and properties of migrants and indeed all nationals resident in South Africa and ensure that real compensations are paid to the families of all who lost their family members and relations and also for the loss of properties.

“It is time that Governments on the continent are compelled by their citizens to work for the common good of the people. In this direction, we will liaise with our counterpart in South Africa to join in the struggle to ensure that migrant workers do not suffer irresponsible losses anymore,”

Nigeria: Health Experts Say Ethanol Poison Killed Ondo Victims, Not Ebola

By Longtong Ibrahim

Akure (Nigeria) – Ondo State Government says it has unraveled the cause of mysterious death that occurred in the State last week, which killed 28 people.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dayo Adeyanju, disclosed that Ethanol poison was discovered in the systems of the victims after a post-mortem was carried out on them.

Adeyanju added that preliminary report also revealed that the disease was neither epidemic nor contagious, pointing out that, “Our investigations have also revealed that the victims, who were all Okada riders, gathered at some local joints to consume alcoholic substance mixed with roots and some other local herbs on the eve of the outbreak of the disease.

“I can assure you that the disease is in no way contagious. The fact that none of the caregivers has contracted the disease has greatly underscored this point.

“Therefore, the fear of spread does not arise and should be discouraged. We strongly suspect ethanol poison, and in view of this, we have ordered for another toxicology test for surviving victims.”

The commissioner explained that there had been no report of new cases in the last three days, saying that 23 people were affected in all, out of which 18 had lost their lives; adding that five survivors who have gone blind had been referred to the University Teaching Hospital Ibadan for further examination.

Adeyanju who has a mixed feelings with what the traditionalists had said, says his job goes beyond explaining the god’s action as he was expected to back up his claims with available evidence.

He however said that the dead persons would be buried in body bags to curtail the spread of the disease.

Supporting the Commissioner’s claim, the spokesperson of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Gregory Haertl, said pesticide poisoning was the probable cause of the mysterious deaths.

He confirmed that the tests done so far had been negative for viral and bacterial infections; pointing out that the current theory was that the deaths were caused by weedkiller.

He tweeted: “Current hypothesis cause of the event is herbicides” and “Tests done so far are negative for viral and bacterial infection.”

Earlier, a Local Chief, Moses Enimade said the disease came as punishment for the “sacrilege” committed against Molokun, the local deity in the area, debunking the rumour that the deaths were caused by strange disease or Ebola virus.

No fewer than 28 people have died of severe headaches and blindness in the town recently without much explanation of the kind of disease.

In his theory, Enimade explained that some stubborn youth broke into the inner room of the Molokun shrine on April 15, which only the Chief Priest and High Chief Gboguron were qualified to enter – the youth made away with traditional items in a bid to acquire extra-ordinary powers and engage in money ritual.

“They were not qualified to enter the shrine. They had to face the death penalty. Even the Kabiesi himself is not permitted; sacrifice must be performed before they can enter.” he stressed.

He added that, he could not remember the last time Molokun or any other gods stroke in the area pointing out that every community has its own culture and traditions and what the youths faced was the judgment of the gods.

“Because these youths want to be rich at all costs, they entered the sacred place and made away with traditional items and 20 of them have died as a result of their desperate acts. We have to appease the gods or else many will still die and we have to bury them according to tradition. Their corpses belong to the gods and will be exhumed if buried by their families.”

“The death caused by Molokun is characterized by severe headache and blindness. He cited an example in the Bible in Proverbs 29:1 saying: `He that had been reproved and hardened his neck shall suddenly be destroyed without remedy; so youths of nowadays must be careful.”

Residents of the community appealed to the chief priest to make the necessary atonement to avert calamity in the town, saying the news of the deaths had given the town and state a bad image.

Nigerian Cattle Breeders Want Buhari To End Cow Rustling

By Mohammad Ibrahim

Kaduna (Nigeria) – Cattle breeders in Nigeria have appealed to President-Elect, Muhammadu Buhari to bring an end cases of cattle rustling in the country.

The group said cattle rustling is a problem bedevilling nomads in the country, adding that failure to tacklie the problem would lead to shortage of meat in the country.

The group also urged Buhari to provide grazing reserves for cattle breeders as that will help stop their migration to other countries in search of food for their animals.

“We appeal to the new president-elect Mohammadu Buhari to assist the herdsmen by training them on modern ways of breeding animals, rather than moving with hundreds of cattle in jungle and cities which cannot produce large percentge of milk.”

Former President of the group, Alhaji Dodo Oroji made the call in a chat with journalists in Kaduna Northwest Nigeria.

According to him, many cattle breeders in Nigeria have migrated to other African countries due to insecurity challenges.

“Every day Nigeria loss millions of Naira due to migration of herbsman to other african countries for their animal safety.”

Other reasons for their migration according to him include absence of grazing reservoirs in the country, constant conflict between nomads and farmers, ethno-religious crisis and lack of adequate assistance from government on animal drugs to prevent their animals from diseases.

“We believe the only solution to such problems is for the government to provide adequate grazing reserves for the cattle breeders.

“Alongside with water reservoirs for the cattle to halt them from migrating from north to south and from other African countries,” he said.

He described General Buhari’s victory as a blessing to the country and urged all Nigerians to continue with ceaseless prayers for the success of the new government.
