We are not moved by insults – GMA president

Teams from Government and the Ghana Medical Association met Sunday over proposals for doctors’ conditions of service.

It is not clear yet the outcome of the meeting.

GMA President, Dr. Poku Edusei in an interview said it is not true they have abandoned negotiations.

“We are going to give government opportunity again and meet Parliament again.

“It is not true that we abandoned negotiation.

“Personal attacks and all those things don’t move us. We are resolved all doctors to make sure that we have a signed and sealed conditions of service document and this we stand by them.

“We did not swear an oath of poverty,” he said adding their fight is for posterity and to make sure sanity prevails in our country.

“We need a signed and sealed condition of service document and we will go back to work.

His comments come after the negotiations turned rancorous last week when the GMA accused the government side of bad faith after their proposal was leaked to the media.

This week another document purportedly from the government side emerged with claims that government has accepted some demands and rejected others.

There has yet to be any official confirmation.

South Africa: Emergency landing was a piece of cake – Durban pilot

Story first appeared on News24

By Amanda Khoza

Durban – A Durban test pilot has described his emergency landing following an engine failure as a “piece of cake”.

“This could have happened to anybody else. If it was any other aircraft, I would have been on a stretcher and on my way to the hospital. It was a piece of cake,” said Ian Waghorn, a class two test pilot for Flight Frontiers South Africa.

Waghorn, 22, spoke to News24 on Sunday shortly after escaping unharmed following an emergency landing on the beach near Durban’s Suncoast Casino in North Beach.

“I was flying a Savage aircraft, which is designed for competing. The aircraft has Super 200 tyres and it is designed for short take-offs, landings and it’s able stop at very short distances.”

Waghorn explained that he took the brand new aircraft for its maiden test on Sunday and it was perfectly fine.

He decided to fly the plane to Virginia Airport in North Beach for more maintenance on Sunday afternoon.

“I was flying to Virginia Airport and the flight was going perfectly fine, and once we reached the harbour it was about 10 more kilometres to go, the oil pressure started to drop very quickly and being a pilot you are trained to know that that means engine failure.

declared my mayday call and seconds later my engine seized. My basic skills kicked in, every pilot is trained… for these types of situations, and I looked for a place to land,” he said.

Waghorn said he was grateful for the gloomy and windy weather, because it meant that the beach was empty.

“I selected a nice landing area and I couldn’t have asked for a better aircraft for this to happen to… the tyres coped really well.”

When asked if he counted his lucky stars for escaping unharmed he said, “No, it was because of my training. This is drilled into every pilot. There is no time to panic, your instincts kick in and you do what you have learnt over the years.

“This is all part of the job, it’s not as serious as everyone is making out to be.”

His overjoyed mother, Leanne Cutting, said she was proud of her son.

“I am glad that he landed the plane so well and safely. His father is a pilot and he has been flying since the age of seven. He is a really competent pilot.

“This particular plane is called a taildragger, and it’s known to be a very difficult plane to land, this was a very good landing,” said Cutting.

Nigeria: Vandalism Threatens Kaduna Refinery Performance — MD

By Mohammad Ibrahim

Kano (Nigeria) – Managing Director of Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC) in northern Nigeria, Saidu Aliyu Muhammed says act of vandalism on pipeline supplying oil from Warri to Kaduna has remained a challenge to the company’s performance.

Muhammed said, so far, the supply of crude oil to KRPC which is grossly inadequate is still a major challenge to the sustenance of plant operation and needs to be addressed holistically.

The MD who stated this in Kano, at a workshop for journalists, stressed the need for oil pipelines to be regarded as ‘’Military Zone’’ in view of its strategic importance to the economy of Nigeria.

“The incessant vandalism on Warri – Kaduna pipeline is one of the greatest threats to KRPC’s performance. This line need to be highly secured to guarantee continuous supply of crude to KRPC.

“We advocate for the pipeline to be regarded as ‘’Military Zone’’ in view of its strategic importance. Replacement of the weak segments of the pipeline is ongoing. The repair work is expected to be completed on 27th August, 2015 and thereafter, Crude Oil supply to KRPC would resume.

“While, the plants were shutdown due to lack of Crude Oil, the opportunity was exploited to intensify the plant rehabilitation activities. Most of the jobs that require plant shutdown were handled in the Power Plant and Utilities (PPU), Fuels and Lubes Plants.

“As we speak, the PPU, CDU-1, NHU, CRU and the FCCU are back in operation. The products running to tanks now include Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), House Hold Kerosene (HHK), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO),” he said.

He pointed out that the ongoing plant rehabilitation is being done in phases, adding that Phase 1 was completed in December, 2014 and phase 2 was concluded in July, 2015 – hoping to commence phase 3 from September, 2015.

Africa Prime News learnt that the current phase of equipment installation is expected to increase capacity utilization of the refinery to 75%, while the third phase of the project will eventually deliver the targeted 90% capacity utilization by second quarter of 2016.

Muhammed said the purpose of the workshop was to strengthen the capacity of journalists in managing the flow of information from the Oil and Gas Industry to the public, thereby keeping themselves abreast with the happenings in the Industry.

In a remark, Chairman, Kaduna State Correspondents Garba Muhammad said KRPC is the first organization in the north to engage journalists through workshops on annual basis.

According to him, today other organizations are trying to emulate it by starting the sponsorship of workshops and other training programmes for Journalists.

He commended the company for its support to journalists in Kaduna State.

The theme of the workshop was “Development Communication: An imperative for Oil and Gas Industry” – to strengthen the use of communication to facilitate social development.

Glyphosate confirmed as a probable human carcinogen by the World Health Organization

Pesticide joins international ‘highly hazardous’ list slated for phaseout

On July 29, 2015 a branch of the World Health Organization (WHO) released a monograph of the herbicide glyphosate on which it had based its earlier decision that this chemical is a probable carcinogen for humans. With this action, glyphosate officially joins the list of highly hazardous pesticides (HHPs).

Pesticide Action Network International welcomes the confirmation of the
decision of the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) regarding glyphosate’s carcinogenicity, which is long overdue. However, PAN International thinks that the IARC has underestimated the threats from this chemical. PAN International’s regional centers jointly issued the following statement:

PAN International calls on governments and policymakers to take immediate measures to curtail and stop the use of herbicide formulations containing glyphosate applied to genetically engineered seeds, other crops, in urban areas and home gardens. The network reiterates its call to governments to develop an action plan to address the concerns highlighted in scientific studies and the IARC’s evaluation of glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen. Glyphosate also now joins the growing list of highly hazardous pesticides that should be phased out and banned immediately.”

PAN International raised specific concerns with the IARC’s analysis. While IARC rightly concluded that dermal and ingestion exposure are major routes for human exposure, it downplayed inhalation. Glyphosate inhalation during use and as a result of drift is also an important route of exposure, especially where there is spraying over vast areas, for example in the United States, Brazil and Argentina, where it is used on genetically engineered crops.

“The conclusion of the IARC on glyphosate as a probable carcinogen is not a surprise to the thousands of people in Argentina and countries in the region who are suffering the health impacts from continuous exposure to glyphosate, especially in the areas where massive glyphosate spraying takes place,” says Javier Souza, chair of PAN International. “Glyphosate-related illnesses and serious diseases are common among people in the rural areas around soybean farms.”

People all over the world are exposed to this herbicide, through residues in food and water, through skin contact as identified by the IARC, and also through inhalation.

“IARC’s report mentions glyphosate residues found in food as well as in surface and groundwater, posing a threat to human health. However, it is also present in rainfall, which increases the risk for human exposure,” says Carina Weber, coordinator of PAN Germany.

The IARC report mentions that there is little information on occupational or community exposure to glyphosate. “Glyphosate is extensively used around the globe on glyphosate resistant crops as well as on other crops, and in urban areas. This creates a considerable risk of exposure to agricultural workers, farmers, and rural and urban communities,” says Judy Hatcher, regional coordinator of PAN North America. She adds “that there has been so little monitoring of glyphosate exposure is really unacceptable.”

IARC’s classification of glyphosate is the result of a yearlong evaluation by worldwide independent experts who reviewed the publicly available scientific literature on the carcinogenicity of glyphosate.

Keith Tyrell, coordinator of PAN UK, says, “It has taken 40 years and thousands of injured people, whose health has been seriously undermined by exposure to glyphosate, to finally have WHO recognition about at least one of the hazards of this pesticide.”

“How much more do farmers, agricultural workers, and rural communities have to endure for the world to take action and eliminate highly hazardous pesticides from the planet?” asks Abou Thiam, regional coordinator of PAN Africa.

Sarojeni Rengam, regional coordinator of PAN Asia Pacific, observes, “IARC’s pronouncement on glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen sends a wake-up call on the dangers posed by highly hazardous pesticides. It is time that governments and decision-makers implement policies to phase out HHPs and advance sustainable agriculture that protects human health and the environment.”

Nigeria To Increase VAT Charges To 10%

Nigeria is to double the rate charged on Value Added Tax (VAT) from its present 5% to 10 per cent before the end of this year.

Acting Executive Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Sunday Ogungbesan, said though plans are not finalised, the move was to help improve the country’s income, given the declining price of oil at the international market.

“The plan is to increase to 10 percent this year, but we have to consult first with relevant stakeholders,” he said

Ogungbesan added that the FIRS will direct its strength in improving its performance. The Service targeted at collecting N2.29 trillion in the first half of the year, but ended up collecting N1.97 trillion ($9.9bn).

“If we achieve our revenue targets, to a great extent, government deficits will be reduced.

“Our plan is to bring every business into the tax net; this economy can survive outside oil,” Ogungbesan said.

More than 70% of Nigeria’s income is from oil export, but the price of oil in the international market has fallen since last year, inflicting a serious injury to the country economy.

3,000 Nigerian Refugees Await Repatriation From Cameroon

About 3000 Nigerian refugees are still at the country’s border with Cameroon undergoing registration before repatriation to Borno State, northeast Nigeria.

Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Muhammad Sani Sidi made this known in Mubi, while briefing Deputy Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Zannah Mustapha on the situation of the refugees.

A statement by NEMA Northeast Information Officer, Abdulkadir Ibrahim said, the agency “is collaborating with the Borno Government in transporting its indigenes who were displaced by insurgency.”

The statement says “other refugees that have been received by Nigerian authorities are camped at the border between Nigeria and Cameroon.

“Over 2000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have been transported so far to safer locations in Mubi, while 600 of the refugees have been transported back to Borno.”

Nigeria: El-Rufai Commences Demolition Of Houses In Kaduna

Kaduna (Nigeria) – Mixed reactions have trailed the action of Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State on demolition of private houses erected within premises of public institutions, including schools, hospitals and libraries.

The state government had given owners of such structures to remove them on, or before August 5, or face the wrath of the law.

In a discussion on Kaduna State Media Corporation (radio) on Tuesday, Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan reiterated that the state government will go ahead and recover all such lands acquired by individuals

“This government cannot allow the encroachment of schools and hospitals lands to continue. For instance, when we visited the state library in Zaria and Alhudahuda College, private buildings have almost taken over the institutions. This has serious effect on the learning atmosphere of such institutions.” He said

On Wednesday August 5, the bulldozers moved to Alhudahuda College in Zaria and commenced razing down structures, leaving people crying, some with no place to go.

Since then, many citizens have continued to react on social media, especially the Facebook on the action of the Governor..

Below are some of the comments

“SAMUEL ARUWAN IS RUNNING OUT OF TARGET———— SUNYI AMAI ZAI LASHE
You should avoid hiding under the bed, these are what MAIRUSAU said about demolition of properties in ALHUDAHUDA ;
KOKAI WAYE , KO KAIME KAKE TAKAMA DASHI , KO ME KAKE KEWAYA DASHI WALLAHI SAI MUNRUSHE .
But Samuel Aruwan was denying the word RUSHEWA and replacing it with recovering the land not rushewa.
My question to ARUWAN how can you recover the land ?
Properties developed in the land are not seen as properties by you?
Samuel Aruwan was denying the word rushewa but replacing it with recovering , Mairushewa is now Mairecovery .
Aruwan don see pepper denying demolition of houses in an interview in an Hausa program called Anche kache.”

progress of their Kaduna State .
I Challenge Nasir Elrufai or any of his hunt dogs in social media or whoever can, to come out and tell or show us anything good that came from Elrufai apart from putting
pains in the lives of kaduna people.
Someone should tell him even fir’auna (Pharon) of the days of Musa (mosses) A.S that claim to be God has done worst than him and still die with some people still breathing not to talk of him that is not even up to an ‪#‎Ant‬ of those days.
Elrufai and all those his vuvuzelars should have a rethink.”

“We have two categories of potential victims . Those were genuinely allocated lands by previous government and those who occupied government carved out spaces. Let me give you an instance. During makarfi, secondary school and a hospital in Tafawa Belewa way was converted to university. The doctors’ quaters was allocated to some doctors and they paid certain amounts to government account. Some of them could not stay their and they sold their carved out to other private citizens. In such situation what do you do?”

In the North here, What ever we do or what ever we wanna do as politicians, we follow the steps of our Heroes I.e Sardauna and Co. I believe if Sardauna and His kind are Alive, they will not allow Such thing happen to a School and get their eyes open while watching. But, before they maintain the Houses, who sold the Land for them??? The Government or the School Principal?? If it happens to be the Government, definitely an Alternate place to live MUST be provided for those people, otherWise, they should expect Nothing from the state Government and get back to those that sales the land for them. You have to be Straight Forward and Keep Politics aside before be figure out things like these.

Up Kaduna state! We now have the most courageous governor. The most talked about governor. The most prepared governor. Hate him or love him, you just cant be indifferent to El-rufai!”

The government has already sensed the negative comments before they came, amd Aruwan was quick to mention that in the radio discussion when he said “Since after the town hall meeting in Zaria on Sunday, some people have started campaign of calumny that Mr. El-Rufai has come to embark on demolition of houses in Kaduna. But to set the records straight, we are only asking those who illegally occupied government owned institutions’ lands to vacate the land.”
