Mother Teresa Declared Saint By Pope Francis At Vatican – BBC

0

imageMother Teresa, revered for her work with the poor in India, has been proclaimed a saint by Pope Francis in a ceremony at the Vatican.

Francis said St Teresa had defended the unborn, sick and abandoned, and had shamed world leaders for the “crimes of poverty they themselves created”.

Tens of thousands of pilgrims attended the canonisation in St Peter’s Square.

Two apparent cures of sick people after Mother Teresa’s death in 1997 have been attributed to her intercession.

In India, a special Mass was celebrated at the Missionaries of Charity, the order she founded in Kolkata (Calcutta).

Cardinal Angelo Amato read a brief biography of Mother Teresa’s work, then asked the Pope to canonise her in the name of the Church.

Pope Francis responded: “We declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a saint and we enrol her among the saints, decreeing that she is to be venerated as such by the whole Church.”

The Pope said Mother Teresa had spent her life “bowing down before those who were spent, left to die on the side of the road, seeing in them their God-given dignity”.

He added: “She made her voice heard before the powers of the world, so that they might recognise their guilt for the crimes of poverty they themselves created.” He then repeated: “The crimes of poverty they themselves created.”

Shining a light: Analysis by BBC’s Caroline Wyatt

Despite the intense heat, the atmosphere among the pilgrims in St Peter’s Square was one of joy, and the service a celebration of the life of this extraordinary woman.

Teresa was born an ethnic Albanian, and the Albanian flag was much in evidence, as was the distinctive white habit, trimmed with blue stripes, worn by the nuns of her order, the Missionaries of Charity.

In his homily of St Teresa’s work, Pope Francis said she had shone a light in the darkness of the many who no longer had tears to shed for their poverty and suffering. It was clear that her life reflected the kind of Church that this Pope is trying to build: one that shows mercy to all and offers practical help for the poorest and for all those in need.

Although critics have sought to portray St Teresa as a sinner and a hypocrite, her supporters have been just as vocal in her defence, challenging those critics to live their lives the way St Teresa did, before they cast the first stone.

Hundreds of Missionaries of Charity sisters attended the event, along with 13 heads of state or government.

Some 1,500 homeless people across Italy were also brought to Rome in buses to be given seats of honour at the celebration – and then a pizza lunch served by 250 nuns and priests of the Sisters of Charity order.

One pilgrim, Charlotte Samba from Gabon, told Associated Press: “Her heart, she gave it to the world. Mercy, forgiveness, good works. It is the heart of a mother for the poor.”

Large TV screens were set up at Mother House in Kolkata for the Vatican ceremony.

Worldwide acclaim

Mother Teresa founded a sisterhood that runs 19 homes, and won the Nobel Peace Prize.

But she was not without her critics, as some people noted a lack of hygiene in the hospitals run by her sisterhood, and said she accepted money from dictators for her charity work.

She died in 1997 – aged 87 – and was beatified in 2003, the first step to sainthood.

In 2002, the Vatican ruled that an Indian woman’s stomach tumour had been miraculously cured after prayers to Mother Teresa, despite the doubts of her husband.

Pope Francis cleared the way for sainthood last year when he recognised a second miracle attributed to her.

Her work complements Francis’ vision of a Church that serves the underprivileged.

Her canonisation is a centrepiece of his Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Born in 1910 to ethnic Albanian parents, Agnese Gonxha Bojaxhiu grew up in what is now the Macedonian capital, Skopje, but was then part of the Ottoman Empire.

Aged 19, she joined the Irish order of Loreto and in 1929 was sent to India, where she taught at a school in Darjeeling under the name of Therese.

In 1946, she moved to Kolkata to help the destitute and, after a decade, set up a hospice and a home for abandoned children.

She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. The sisterhood now has 4,500 nuns worldwide.

She achieved worldwide acclaim for her work in Kolkata’s slums, but her critics accused her of pushing a hardline Catholicism, mixing with dictators and accepting funds from them for her charity.

It often takes decades for people to reach sainthood after their death, but beatification was rushed through by Pope John Paul II.

Video Counters Nigeria’s Finance Minister, Adeosun, Confirms She Dismissed Recession As ‘A Word’ – Premium Times

0

imageFinance Minister, Kemi Adeosun, indeed said Nigeria’s current economic recession is just “a word”, PREMIUM TIMES can confirm today, two days after the minister denied making such statement.

The confirmation, based on video evidence, counters Mrs. Adeosun’s denial on Thursday, after the comment became controversial, with many condemning it as insensitive to the sufferings of Nigerians.

In denying the comments, the minister had also rejected a Twitter handle that for months posted messages in her name, with its tweets frequently reported by the media.

In its latest post on Wednesday, the account, @Mrskemiadeosun, responded to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics showing that the Nigerian economy contracted for another quarter and was effectively in recession.

But as distraught Nigerians reacted to the verdict, the handle appeared to downplay it.

“The strongest of all warriors are these two, time and patience. I know people are concerned about the recession. Recession is a word,” the handle tweeted.

The tweet generated backlash from many Nigerians, including the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The post was later deleted.

But the criticism intensified on Thursday morning, with the comment making the headlines of some national dailies.

On Thursday afternoon, Festus Akanbi, spokesman for Mrs. Adeosun, told PREMIUM TIMES the account was fake and the statements did not reflect the position of his principal.

belong to the Honourable Minister of Finance. At no point did she make that kind of statement in her interaction with the media after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday. The fake handle does not belong to her,” Mr. Akanbi said.

Mr. Akanbi also said Mrs. Adeosun had no presence on Twitter. The office later issued a statement, expressing the same position.

However, a video recording shows Mrs. Adeosun made a similar remark at an earlier event, although with a slightly different context.

Mrs. Adeosun spoke at a town hall meeting organised by the Alumni Association of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies on August 9, 2016.

She spoke alongside the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, Minister Power, Works and Housing, Tunde Fashola, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udoma, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama.

The minister used her speech to explain why Nigeria should diversify its economy.

“The diversification agenda is not a rhetoric. The diversification agenda is an economic objective that we would achieve with what we’re doing with the budget, with our implementation and with how we’re managing our finances.

“So, yes, we’re borrowing. We need to borrow because we cannot wait for the oil prices to recover. We have to invest in this large infrastructure projects that are needed to unlock the competitiveness in our economy and create jobs for our people. That’s the objective of this government and that’s what we’re working towards. I’m also extremely confident that we would get there.

“The one thing Nigerians have in abundance is probably our greatest intangible asset is the spirit of the Nigerian people. The entrepreneurship of the Nigerian people. And their hard work. If we can combine those with an enabling environment created by government, I believe this economy can turn around,” Mrs. Adeosun said.

Then the minister moved on to the part where she attempted to allay the fears of Nigerians about the recession at the time.

“I know people are concerned about recession. Recession is a word,” Mrs. Adeosun said. “We can come out of recession. We can make sure it’s as short as possible by sticking to the prescription which is we must be disciplined with our expenditure, we must invest in capital and we must diversify our economy.

After the video emerged, some of Mrs. Adeosun’s supporters said she made a mistake by denying ties to the Twitter handle in the first place.

At the height of the controversy on Thursday, the handle changed its status from being an “official Twitter account” of the minister to a “parody account”.

ZANU PF Intimidates Mujuru Supporters

imageZimPF leaders in Mashonaland Central province have accused Zanu PF officials of intimidation ahead of former Vice-President Joice Mujuru’s homecoming star rally today.

Mujuru has gone to most provinces in the country to introduce her party to her supporters. But in each province, Zanu PF has been accused of employing various tactics to discourage people from attending.

ZimPF Mashonaland Central provincial youth leader, Titus Manyika told NewsDay Weekender yesterday that intimidation was rife but Mujuru’s supporters remained unfazed.

They are doing all sorts of things, but we remain strong,” he said. “Firstly, we booked Chipadze Stadium on August 11 and Zanu PF went on to make a booking on August 19 for another programme and they were granted ahead of us. We got an alternative, which is Aerodrome shopping centre, and there are reports that they want to take that venue again,” he said.

Manyika said Zanu PF operatives had been defacing their posters, while openly telling people to boycott the rally.

“They are defacing our posters in Bindura, Mazowe and Guruve. In Mt Darwin they are actually removing all the posters. We have information to the effect that they have deployed two trucks to demobilise our supporters. However, all these tactics will not work because people are firmly behind Mujuru,“ he said.

Yesterday the party held a clean-up campaign and also put up more posters.
“We will also sleep at the venue to secure it so that no one comes to disturb,” Manyika said.
The youth leader said, already, property worth thousands of dollars was lost last Friday when suspected Zanu PF supporters burnt down a house belonging to their supporter in Bindura North, ward 20.

ZimPF interim provincial chairperson, Godfrey Chimombe said the rally was meant to prove Mujuru had respect in her province of birth.

mobilisation well and the people are eager to meet their future leader. Mujuru is a darling of this province. She hails from this side and she did a lot of developmental projects that benefited the people,” he said.

“We opted for Chipadze Stadium, but we could not secure it. We then got clearance for the Aerodrome open space, but today some Zanu PF councillors in Bindura are saying that place is not conducive for the rally. We are currently running around to put things in order through engaging.” newsday

World’s Biggest Cruise Ship Sets Sail, Features Augmented Reality And Cirque Du Soleil – CNBC

0

imageThe world’s biggest cruise ship sailed closer to wining, dining and entertaining passengers on Friday when the Swiss-owned MSC Meraviglia was floated out to sea in a 12-hour operation.

With space to welcome 5,714 guests aboard, the Meraviglia will be the largest cruise ship afloat (by passenger capacity) once it sets sail in June 2017. Bookings are already open for a 7-night Mediterranean cruise setting off from Marseille in the first week of the ship’s working life. The most modest interior rooms are priced at £699 ($929) for the week, while luxuriating in a Yacht Club room will burn at least a £1,699-sized hole in your wallet.

The Royal Suite is the most extravagant of the Yacht Club rooms, featuring a 700-square foot main room and a 430-square foot balcony pimped-up with a private whirlpool bath and dinner party-sized table. Being in the prime Yacht Club area of the ship means the suite also offers a concierge service, a 24-hour butler and exclusive restaurants, bars and sunbathing space closed off to other passengers.

The vessel is part of MSC’s ambitious $10.2 billion investment program and is the first to launch of 11 ships coming into service between 2017 and 2026. It was constructed in the STX France shipyard in Saint-Nazaire and is now in its final waterborne construction phase.

A key attraction in MSC’s first at-sea venture is the involvement of Cirque du Soleil, whose artists will perform shows created exclusively for MSC cruises guests.

As well as its sheer size, cruise enthusiasts are interested in the high-tech features built into the ship via a partnership with South Korean electronics giant Samsung.

These include an augmented reality device that can show shoppers what they look like in the designer clothes sold on board without them even trying them on. Smart bracelets will be used to pay for goods — and keep track of your children if they decide to run amok on board or head to the Aqua Park that boasts three giant waterslides.

But could these tech features, or others, such as the 262 foot -LED dome that will create continuous light shows along a Mediterranean-style promenade, detract passengers from the natural attractions of going to sea?

Not according to Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC Cruises, who said “We’re turning the idea of ‘turning it all off’ on its head and enabling our guests to use technology to enhance their life onboard by helping them to better plan their cruise and get the most out of their holiday.”

He contended that there would be no bar to guests doing a digital detox, saying “The important point is that guests can choose what information they receive and how much they engage with the technology.”

Indeed, Cindy D’Aoust, CEO of Cruise Lines International Association, told CNBC that the latest gadgets were key to many passengers’ cruise experiences.

“Technology is important to guests as it provides additional ways to stay connected and personalize the cruising experience,” she said via email.

“Cruise ships are now outfitted with some of the most advanced amenities in the travel industry,” she added.

According to data from Cruise Market Watch, the number of cruise passengers rose by an annual compound growth rate of 12.6 percent between 1990 and 2015. And the growth looks set to continue, albeit at a slower pace — passengers numbers are seen jumping to 25.3 million in 2019 again 22.3 million in 2015.

However, with pockets of the tourist industry suffering in the wake of terror attacks around European and North African hotspots, concerns have been raised that nervous passengers may prefer to stay ashore.

In emailed comments to CNBC, Jaime Katz, equity analyst at Morningstar said, “Historically, demand has waned temporarily when either a health concern or terrorist incident has occurred, but has rebounded rather quickly, weighing on bookings for only a few weeks.”

He highlighted other factors that were more likely to impact numbers, saying “Demand is more closely tied to economic performance during that particular period than geopolitical headlines.”

Katz concluded that part of the beauty of a ship was its ability to locate away from places perceived as less desirable to visit.

“Overall, we don’t think the impact from the spate of terrorist attacks will permanently affect demand potential over the long term. If it were (to), however, we believe the cruise industry has the unique opportunity to reallocate its hardware to other geographies that would yield more promising returns.”

Nigeria To Produce Documentary On Film Viewership Guidelines

By Iyakale Yakubu
imageJos (Nigeria) — The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) says it has concluded plans to commence its media campaign literacy project to ensure conformity to its viewership guidelines.

To this end, it will soon produce a documentary on film classification. Despite having existing classification, majority of the Nigerians, especially at the grass root are not aware of it, talk less of understanding same, this is because the country has no robust public enlightenment campaign that provides understanding of such classification to viewers.

North-Central Zonal Coordinator of the Board, Paul Ailewon, the Zonal Coordinator of NFVCB, North-Central said, the board will partner other bodies like the Media Ambassadors, and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on the project.

“The documentary which would be an enlightenment campaign for parents, guardians, children and the general public would portray the implications of not conforming to the guidelines for film and video viewership,” he said.

Ailewon said the had since embarked on visitation to establishments like schools, worship centres and NYSC Camps, to ensure people understand and conform to viewership standards.

“We have also visited media organisations like Unity FM Jos, and Plateau Radio Television among other, on their live programmes.

“This is to enlighten members of the public on the implication of not conforming to our viewership guidelines,” he said.

Maternal Deaths: Experts Task Northern Nigeria On Use Of Misoprostol To Address Cases

By Iliya Kure
imageKaduna (Nigeria) — State Governments in Northern Nigeria have been tasked on the use of misoprostol to reduce cases of maternal deaths due to bleeding.

A medical expert, Dr. Salamatu Kolo, who made the call in Kaduna, at a workshop on National Guidelines for community distribution of Misoprostol said the drug has been proven effective in the prevention and controlling of bleeding associated with childbirth.

“When taken immediately and appropriately after child delivery, it can reduce the risk of postpartum haemorrhage by between 24 to 47 per cent.” She said.

Kolo expressed concern that the Northern region records the highest burden of maternal deaths in the country, asking the governments to act wisely in reducing such deaths.

“It provides a unique opportunity to improve maternal health and accelerate equity in access to life saving drugs for maternal health.

“Misoprostol has the potential to transform the management of post-partum haemorrhage, both at the health facility level and within communities, by allowing women to administer the drug themselves.

Coordinator of Population and Reproductive Health Initiative (PRHI), organisers of the workshop, Professor Oladipo Shittu, said the organisation aims at providing life saving medication to help reduce the high burden of maternal mortality resulting from home deliveries in northern Nigeria.

He said, the workshop was to equip health officials in the northern region with various skills to save the lives of women during child birth.

He said following research, the NGO had embarked on the distrubution of misoprostol drugs to women in some northern communities in an effort to stem the tide of maternal deaths.

“Not only has this study continued to save and protect women from unnecessary deaths, its outcome promted the Federal Government and WHO to change the previous policy, restricting the use misoprostol to health facilities and skilled birth attendants, he said.

Kano (Nigeria) – About 10, 000 rice farmers in Kano state, North-west Nigeria are to benefit from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) initiated Rice Anchor Borrowers Programme, under the first phase, during the current wet season in Kano state.

Already, the first batch of 5, 540 beneficiaries have been cleared for participation in the program while the rest are awaiting clearance from the apex bank to enable them participate.

Disclosing this during the flag-off of the programme at Bunkure Cattle Ranch in Bunkure local government area, the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje explained that more farmers would be involved in the programme during the year’s dry season and subsequent rainy seasons.

It is envisaged that thousands of rice farmers in the state would take advantage of the programme, aimed at creating profitable linkages between over 600, 000 small holder farmers and large scale processors in Nigeria, with a view to increasing agricultural production and extensively improving capacity utilization of integrated mills.

Stressing the implication of dwindling price of oil in global markets to Nigeria’s economy, the governor maintained the Buhari administration accords top priority to agricultural production, as one of the viable sources of revenue generation, job creation and ensuring food sufficiency for its teeming populace.

In this connection, he stated that his administration “is committed to revitalizing agriculture and with particular emphasis on the rice value chain in addition to wheat, dairy, meat and tomato”, in view of Kano’s huge water and arable land resources.

Governor Ganduje maintained that ahead of the launch, the state technical committee on the Rice Anchor Borrowers Programme had conducted among other things registration of beneficiaries, farm inspections as well as training on best agronomic practices and crop protection techniques to ensure maximum success.

“As you are aware, the programme is on loan basis not grant hence you should make sure that you make prompt repayment and based on the terms of agreement entered with you”, the governor charged the farmers.

The Director, Development Finance Department of the CBN, Dr. M. A Olaitan, represented by Umar Abubakar Ambursa stated that the programme was designed, among other things, to close the gap between local rice production and domestic consumption, urging rice and wheat farmers to take advantage of the development to improve their lot.

“If you utilize the loan by farming diligently, it will help you, our farmers, to grow from being subsistent to commercial farmers”, assuring that steps have been taken to ensure that the loans are not fraudulently manipulated.
