Abuja (Nigeria) – The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has warned that the recent occurrence of earth tremors in some communities and towns in the country were signs that Nigeria is at risk to bigger and higher magnitude earthquake.

nasrda

Director General of NASRDA Prof Seidu Mohammed made this known at a Public Presentation of remote and immediate causes of the tremor in some Kaduna communities, on Thursday in Abuja, saying it was no longer true that high magnitude earthquake could not occur in Nigeria.

According to him,“Disturbingly, the recent earth tremors in Shaki (Oyo State), and some communities in Bayelsa and Rivers states as well as in communities in Kwoi, Jaba LGA of Kaduna sate are warning signs of a bigger occurrence,” he said

He said the causes of the tremor in Kwoi and its environs in Kaduna state were natural, adding that, “The earthquake could be attributed to the stress released from the fault systems of the area”, he added.

Mohammed said underneath rocks where the communities were sitting on might have made a very little shake which was felt by the communities.

Also speaking, Director, Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics (CGG), Toro, Bauchi state, Dr Tahir Yakubu, said though a bigger and higher magnitude earthquake may occur in or around the country because of the tremors.

“But the government should take this serious and provide the centre with advanced equipment and facilities to enable us monitor the earth activities within and around Nigeria”, he said.

The officials, however, said residents of Kwoi communities were safe and do not need to flee the area.

Tremor incidents in Nigeria have hit communities in Rivers, Bayelsa and Kaduna state which is the worst hit in 2016.

South African University Risks Closing As No End Seen To Protest – Bloomberg

South Africa’s University of the Witwatersrand risks closing its doors for the rest of the year after a mass meeting to discuss the crisis at the country’s biggest university was postponed when protesting students and management failed to agree on a way forward.

The institution had planned to hold a general assembly on Friday, led by Chancellor Dikgang Moseneke, a retired deputy chief justice of the Constitutional Court, to reach an agreement to end violent protests for free education. Demonstrations have forced the closing of several universities across the country for weeks as the academic year nears an end, and caused hundreds of millions of rends in damage to property.

“Protesting students effectively wanted the general assembly and march to the constitutional court to continue, but refused to commit that the academic program will commence on Monday,” Wits Vice Chancellor Adam Habib told reporters on Friday. “One of the latest demands is that Wits and all other universities should be shut down until government agrees to free education.”

Shutting universities for the rest of year will result in students not graduating and will leave the next intake of school leavers in limbo for 2017. While the government has offered subsidies for poorer students, it opposes free education for wealthier families. Finances at many of the 26 universities are so stretched by the government’s decision to limit tuition costs this year after student riots in 2015 that they say they may not be able to continue operating. That would be disastrous for an economy already contending with a skills shortage and a 27 percent unemployment rate.

Petrol Bombs

Wits University will hold a council meeting over the weekend to try to find consensus, Habib said.

Students have clashed with police at universities around the country. Protesters pelted security officers with rocks and several buildings were set alight with petrol bombs at the University of Cape Town this week. Police have arrested 327 people since February in relation to acts of violence, intimidation and destruction of property related to the campaign for lower fees, Khomotso Phahlane, the acting national police commissioner, told reporters on Thursday.

“The arrests are related to 134 cases that have been opened with the police and 32 of those cases are already before courts of law,” he said. “The fees must fall movement has been infiltrated by those who want to provoke the police to use violence.”

Junk Rating

The campaign also puts pressure on the National Treasury as a time when the government is seeking to limit spending to bring down the budget deficit to less than 3 percent of gross domestic product and stave off a credit rating downgrade to junk.

The developments at Wits and the University of Cape Town show that there’s a high level of spontaneity among the student groups, making them difficult to negotiate with, Ben Turok, a former anti-apartheid activist and economics professor, said by phone on Friday.

“It is virtually a leaderless movement and this, with the spontaneity, makes for a highly dangerous situation,” he said.

ECOWAS Court Orders Immediate Release Of Dasuki, Fines Nigeria N15M Over Detention – PR Nigeria

Dasuki Sambo, Former National Security Adviser, Nigeria

dasuki-sambortd-former-nsa-2The Economic Community of West Africa State (ECOWAS) Court has ordered immediate release of former National Security Adviser, Colonel Muhammadu Sambo Dasuki from detention where he has been kept without trial since December 2015.

The regional court held that the detention of Dasuki violated both national and international laws on the right of persons and citizens to freedom of liberty.

In a judgement by the court and delivered by Justice Friday Chijioike Nwoke, the ECOWAS Court imposed a fine of N15,000,000 against Nigeria as compensatory damages to the former National Security Adviser for the deprivation of his freedom to liberty and the deprivation of his properties.

In a judgement that lasted over one hour, the regional court dismissed the allegations of unlawful possession of firearms and economic crimes allegedly committed by Dasuki adding that the Nigeria government missed the track because the applicant applied before the court for the enforcement of his breached and contravention of fundamental right.

Justice Nwoke said that even if the applicant had committed a crime the law still has it that due process of the law must be observed in his trial adding that it is an established fact that the applicant was put on trial in three different Nigeria High Courts and was granted bails by the courts.

The court said that the action of the Nigerian government in subjecting the Ex-NSA into the detention without trial is condemnable because criminality has not been established against him.

Justice Chijioke further said that the Nigerian government took laws into its hands and made mockery of the rule of law by arresting the applicant without warrant of arrest or warrant of detention when he had legally being granted bail by the appropriate courts.

According to the court detention order must be made in writing and must be delivered to the detainees adding that in the instance case none of such was obtained and delivered to Dasuki by the Federal Government before arresting and executing and forcefully took away properties of the applicant in his house in Abuja and Sokoto.

The court also dismissed the claim of the Federal Government that Dasuki was arrested and detained in his own interest. Adding that the claim was an assault to the Nigerian Constitution and other international laws because there was no iota of evidence placed before the court that applicant applied for security protection.

If We Return To God, He’ll Heal Our Land – Nigerian Pastor

0

By Iliya Kure
Kaduna (Nigeria) — It was an atmosphere of praise and worship at ECWA Gospel Romi New Extension Kaduna in Nigeria, where congregation on sunday devoted time to pray for Nigeria. The sunday worship was to mark the country’s 56th Independence Anniversary.

Overseer of the Church, Pastor Bulus Ibrahim read from Isaiah chapter 62 verse 1, saying God will not rest until He (God) met the needs of His children.

The Pastor also read from second Chronicles chapter 7 verses 11 to 16. Where the Bible admonishes christians to rise up, repent and pray to God for Him to heal their land.

Pastor Ibrahim stressed on the need for Nigerians to stop all forms of evil, and approach God in true repentance and worship, emphasising that as the precondition for God to answer their prayer and return their nation on the path of greatness.

“You must drop all your heavy load and repent from the baggage you are carrying, whether it is idolatry, fornication, stealing, or whatever you are carrying.

“God works with people who genuinely seek His face. If we want him to heal our land we must show true repentance and turn away from all wicked ways. Go is not far, it is our sin that has kept Him away from answering our prayers,” he sais

While leading the congregation in prayers, Pastor Ibrahim stressed that christians ought to pray fervently for Nigeria to overcome its numerous challenges and subdue any hinderance to its growth as a nation.

He lamented that Nigeria was not showing sign of growth – the younger generation not taking up leadership positions from their parents, but remained in a situation where older generation kept coming back to rule again and again, several years after ruling the country.

“We need to pray for God to help our nation; we have Obasanjo and Buhari coming back to rule our country, each of them the second time – something is wrong, are we saying we don’t have people who are capable? When other nations are adjusting and preparing the next generations for leadership, Nigeria is handing over realms of leadership to older generations that are suppose to take advisory role; something is wrong with our nation! and we need to pray and stand in the gap for it to move forward,” he said.

Worshippers in the church who spoke with AFRICA PRIME NEWS congratulated Nigeria and called on political leaders to pay attention to youth development.

Nigeria got its independence from British rule on 1st October 1960. A country with a population of nearly 180 million people, remained heavily dependent on oil as the major source of income – accounting for more than 75% of its foreign exchange earnings.

Prior to independence and up to the 1980’s the country was doing well in agriculture, which contributed heavily to its earnings – today the country import many agricultural products for consumption.

Currently, Nigeria practices democracy and is ruled by President Muhammadu Buhari, a man that led the country between 1984 – 1985 through a military coup that ousted democratically elected President Shehu Shagari.
