Is Lai Mohammed Really ”Liar” Mohammed, As Some Of His Political Opponents Claim?

By Gboyega Akosile

If you believe in failed propaganda, maybe: for recourse to that libel is from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) camp, that the minister of Information and Culture helped to uproot, with PDP’s defeat at the 2015 general election.

But if you believe in effective propaganda, that cannot be true. What, for instance, is a ‘lie’ about the changed reality of opposition becoming government; and the former government screeching, like morose children who just lost their favorite lollies?

Well, it is all in the realm of political communication, and the fierce battle, for the public mind, by conflicting political camps.

Political communication has been defined by David L. Swanson and Dan Nimmo as “the strategic use of communication to influence public knowledge, beliefs, and action on political matters.”

They emphasize the strategic nature of political communication, highlighting the role of persuasion in political discourse. Another American political commentator, Brian McNair provides a similar definition when he writes that political communication is “purposeful communication about politics.”

The words ‘strategic and purposeful’ here provide the thought process for the complex nature of communication within any given political space.

In the light of the above, I will attempt to x-ray the roles played by Alhaji Lai Mohammed, former spokesman for the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, whose hard work, resilience and dedication earned him the enviable position of the Minister of Information and Culture in Nigeria.

Clearly, no one was in doubt whether Alhaji Lai Mohammed would emerge as the Minister of Information in Nigeria. If there was any credential required to be nominated as one, he has acquired all-academically and professionally.

Little do some of Mohammed’s detractors know that he practised public relations for over a decade while working with Nigerian Airports Authority, now Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) as the Public Relations Officer of the organization.

Mohammed, I should say, was well grounded in the media and so it did not come as surprise to some of us that he performed very well in the task of marketing the All Progressives Congress (APC), using various media channels to lead narratives, manage shortfalls and sometimes, propagate with a view of getting results for his political party.

Mohammed did very well as a party man. His party’s activities, coupled with the quality of the Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, provided a great impetus for this information manager. I remember how hard the Peoples Democratic Party tried to make President Buhari, then a candidate, appear unelectable. It was Lai Mohammed and others in the media and communication team that worked tirelessly to ensure the victory that the APC enjoys today.

It is worrisome to read some write-up, particularly by someone who should understand the subject of discussion but who chooses to ignore facts of the matter and is eventually playing to the gallery, on why President Buhari should fire Lai Mohammed. Nothing more could be laughable than a man who has failed in every area of his personal endeavour attempting to mentor the younger ones on how to run their lives.

I read one or two pieces and without any iota of doubt, I concluded that they must be a hatchet job. The language, the uncoordinated thought and lack of facts as presented by these writers made it clear that they or their principals are clearly not comfortable with the role that the Minister of Information is performing with regard to the fight against corruption.

It is pertinent to ask, why should Buhari fire Mohammed? One of the writers says the Minister is no longer believable. He cites commentaries on the social media platform, where some described the Minister as Liar Mohammed.

May we remind the writer that it did not start today! The labelling of Mohammed was made popular by the PDP, at the twilight of President Jonathan’s administration. This is because, at the time, the PDP did not have a solution to the barrage of political attacks unleashed on them on a daily basis by Alhaji Lai Mohammed, especially on the level of corruption and heist perpetrated by the Jonathan administration and the PDP. The only answer they found convenient at the time was that Mohammed was a liar. But today, millions of Nigerians know who was the lie, and who was the real deal.

There are two, most significant issues in Nigeria today. They are corruption and insurgency. Mohammed has successfully pushed the issue of insurgency to the back pages of newspapers and has played up the need to have a corruption-free society.

Is it a lie now that Boko Haram has been thoroughly degraded? No, it is not, if you ask me. When last did you read on the front page of any newspapers, the usual screaming headlines about Boko Haram’s nefarious activities that characterised the Goodluck Jonathan administration?

No country in the world has been able to completely win the war against insurgency. Not even the United States of America has been able to defeat the dreaded Islamic States (ISIS). But the Nigerian Army has been able to reduce the activities of Boko Haram to suicide bombings, hitting soft targets only.

We can safely say that Lai Mohammed was right when he said that the Nigerian Army had technically defeated Boko Haram.

Except one is being mischievous, or one was benefitting directly or indirectly from the Boko Haram insurgency, it is safe to agree that the group was defeated by the Nigerian Army before the deadline set for them by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Managing information in a complex political situation or atmosphere like Nigeria where corruption has become second nature within the political class, and mischief is never in short supply, can be a daunting task.

Nigerian Group Attacks Senators Shehu Sani And Danjuma La’ah Over El-Rufa’i

By Mohammad Ibrahim

Kaduna (Nigeria) — A group, Concern Citizen of Kaduna State, has warned the Senator Representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, and his counterpart, the Senator Representing Southern Kaduna, Danjuma La’ah, to desist from attacking, or criticising Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i of Kaduna State, northwest nigeria over his policies.

According to them, Governor El-Rufai’s policies are people oriented.

Leader of the group, Adamu Barde Abubakar Kagarko, in a statement made available to newsmen regrets that “because of political sentiments these two Senators could not see this policy as a good development, especially towards restoring the lost glory of primary education in the state.”

The statement in parts say, “I wish to draw the attention of the good the people of Kaduna State to the unnecessary and mischievous attacks on the good policies of our Governor and his Deputy, especially his free school feeding.”

It says, Senator La’ah has never supported any policy of the state government for the purpose of synergy, to better the life of good people of the Southern Kaduna.

“Senator La’ah was not honest enough to tell his audience that 60% of the funding of the feeding programme is coming from the Federal Government. Unknown to him and many other critics, the policy is helping in no small measures in reducing drastically street hawking, begging, theft and many other menaces.” He said.

The statement also attributes Senator Shehu Sani’s attacks on El-Rufai’s policies to his (Sani’s) ambition of contesting for Governorship in 2019, adding that, Sani is misrepresenting the good people of Kaduna Central with his one-sided style of representation.

It advises Sani to focus on the mandate given to him by the people, instead of engaging in anti-party activities by hosting PDP members from Southern Kaduna, with view to incite them against El-Rufai’s administration.

According to the statement, recently Sani shared analogue transistor radios in his constituency and only his followers from Tudu-Wada, Rigasa, Unguwan Sarki and some few areas within the metropolis, and sidelined people from Sabon-Tasha, kajuru, Gonin-Gora and other areas within his constituency, saying that one imagines his kind of gospel of love for the people of Southern Kaduna.

“We want to state categorically, that those attacking the good policies of this Government are either being mischievous or are doing so for the purpose of scoring cheap political points.”

Nigerian Police Chief Visits Scene Of Community Killings, Deploys More Personnel

Inspector-General of Nigerian Police, Solomon Arase, has visited scene of recent killings allegedly perpetrated by fulani herdsmen, in nine Agatu villages of Benue State, NorthCentral nigeria.

The visit was to assess the extent of damage caused during the clash and the impact on the Agatu people.

A statement by Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole, says based on his assessment and coupled with the logistical requirement the “IGP Immediately deployed 2 Units of Police Mobile Force to the area, to reinforce the Unit on ground, while additional Police operational vehicles were also sent to the Commissioner of Police in the State Command to aid operational support.”

The statement adds, “The Inspector-General of Police reaffirmed that the Nigeria Police Force, working in conjunction with the State Government, will do everything within its powers to fish out and bring to book all those involved in this and other similar killings, stressing that an end must be put to this endless circle of impunity.

“IGP Arase, while describing as regrettable, unprovoked and brutal the killing of two Policemen who were on legitimate assignment in the troubled area of Benue State, by the people of the area, warned that any person found to be involved in the killing would be made to bear the full wrath of the law.

“The IGP further noted that the Police and other security agents have relentlessly worked round the clock with significant success to stave off such attacks on the people of the area and the entire country at large and therefore reassured Nigerians that security agencies will do everything possible to further strengthen the security within and beyond the State.

“While commiserating with families of the affected victims, the Inspector-General of Police appealed for the citizens’ support and cooperation to enable the Nigeria Police and other security agencies unmask the perpetrators and sponsors of the crime.” The statement says.

Nigerian NGO Establishes Medical Centre In A Plateau Village

By Iyakale Yakubu

Jos (Nigeria) — Le Pan Health and Well Initiative, an NGO, has established a medical centre in Wubel, a community in Plateau state, northcentral nigeria. The centre was established in response to the heavy disease burden among people of Chafkem district for lack of health centre.

“This centre was borne out of the need to cater for not only Wubel but the people of Chafkem district, where there is no health facility.” says Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, Dr Daniel Mwanmut, at the inauguration ceremony.

Dr. Mwanmut who grew in the community recounted “When I was growing up, I witnessed the death of my uncle, who died of an abdominal injury because there was no local health facility, as the nearest health centre was 40kms away from the community.

“For the fact that the villagers had to trek 15kms to get a vehicle, he died before receiving any medical attention.

“Since then, nothing has changed, the sufferings of the people continued unabated, these issues challenged our conscience and we decided to do something,’’ he said.

Mwanmut said the goal of the organisation was to bring hope to the neglected rural communities through accessible, affordable and sustainable evidence-based health centre to control or eradicate preventable killer diseases.

He called for assistance to build a proposed six-room guest house for visiting medical volunteers and an X-ray room to install and put to use the x-ray machine donated to the hospital.

Senator representing the area, Joshua Dariye, urged indigenes to give back to their communities, so as to fast-track development, saying government could not do everything.

He pledged to support the organisation in establishing a bore-hole, a guest house and make the road leading to the community accessible.

In a remark, the traditional leader of Mwaghavul Chiefdom in Mangu, Miskham Nelson Dakfur, commended the Organization for the giant stride.

He noted that no individual in the Local Government have built a medical centre for the community, saying he will discuss with his kingmakers to recognise the efforts of the founder by conferring him with a traditional title.
