Southern Kaduna crisis: Violence, enmity, hate cannot solve crisis-Osinbajo

0

By Amos Tauna

Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo on Friday said violence, enmity and hate cannot solve Southern Kaduna problem.

He said the process of peace building must commence to gradually phase out the crisis.

Addressing stakeholders from Southern Kaduna during a meeting at Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, Osinbajo said the security Chiefs and local government chairmen had briefed him about the crisis in Southern Kaduna.

While noting that the crisis cannot end in a hurry, because there was hate and anger, he said, “We must therefore strive to put an end to this, otherwise it will consume everybody.”

Osinbajo, however, promised to convene meetings with representatives of CAN, JNI, MACBAN and other stakeholders separately.

He said a quick fix solution would not be apt as the crisis had a long history which he was studying through previous reports of commissions of inquiry, briefing from security agencies and other reports.

“I will like to begin a discussion on the very terrible crisis that has gone on for a while in Southern Kaduna. A lot of bloodletting have taken place in Southern Kaduna in the past few weeks.

“I want to express my sincere condolence to all of those who have lost families and friends and have been traumatized by the terrible things that have been going on in the area in the past few months.

“But I must say there’s no question whatsoever that violence would never stop any of the problems we are experiencing today, there’s no way we will resolve it that way.

“On this matter, I have read documents; as a matter of fact, I have tried very hard to study the crisis in Southern Kaduna, personally. I have read quite a few documents including reports of past crisis; recently I have taken briefings from the service chiefs a couple of days ago on what is going on and since I got in today, I am also taking briefing from some of the senior officials of the armed forces and state security.

“I have talked to his Excellency the governor, that what I would like to achieve is not a quick fix but I want us to begin a process and I want to be a part of that process that will listen to each group separately and then get everyone together.”

Governor El-Rufai in his opening remarks swore to God that his administration would fish out and prosecute those who had participated in the killings or instigated killings in Kaduna State in the last 37 years.

He said that his government had identified bringing culprits to book, deployment of security and commencement of peace building efforts as panacea to permanently ending the Southern Kaduna crisis.

El-Rufai commended the Acting President for his usual assistance to the state government in its efforts to establish military formations in the troubled zone and securing the state at large.

Meanwhile stakeholders who spoke at the meeting, like the CAN Chairman Bishop George Dodo, representative of the JNI, Alhaji Sanusi Maikudi and National Assistant Secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Ibrahim Abdullahi traced the crisis to 2011 post-election violence and suggested ways out.

CAN chairman, Rev. George Dodo thanked the Acting President and the state governor for their intervention in finding lasting peace in Southern Kaduna and prayed that those behind the violence would be apprehended and brought to book.

Representative of JNI in Kaduna State, Alhaji Sanusi Maikudi blamed the crisis on the inability of the previous government to fish out those behind the crisis and failure to act on the recommendations of commissions of inquiry.

The Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has commended the progress of work made so far in the ongoing renovation work at the Kaduna Airport.

Osinbajo made the commendation in an interview with journalists shortly after he visited the Airport Friday on inspection of the renovation work.

He acknowledged that considerable progress had been made, stressing that more neededd to be done to ensure its readiness.

According to him, the Airport was going to be completed over this weekend particularly, the ceiling, air conditioning and security facilities.

“We think that, it may not be in a complete state of readiness by Wednesday.

“I expect that within a very very short period of time, the airport will be very usable and in a comfortable state”, he said.

He urged the contractors to speed up work and meet up with the scheduled deadline.

”We ask people working on the airport to quickly speed up or to double the number of people who are working on the ceiling and other facilities.

“They certainly need to work more faster and much more diligently to be able to deliver on schedule.

“Kaduna Airport deserves the temporal substitute for Abuja airport for both local and international flights.

“We are looking at the state of readiness considering that this is always a local airport and for that, a lot of work need to be done to bring it to the kind of standard that will be required,” he explained.

On foreign airlines declining to use the airport, Osinbajo explained, “One thing is very clear, it’s not all foreign airlines that have declined. Some airlines are willing to come to Kaduna Airport; I just spoke with Ethiopia airline and they are willing to come.

“I think that foreign airlines will, but what we need to tell them is that obviously this a temporary arrangement and they should really work with us on the temporary arrangement.

“We are concerned about safety and comfort as they are. They are here also to see for themselves, I am sure you have seen some of them.”

By Winifred Bulus

Plans are underway by a leading Science and Technology company, Merck Group to empower women and girls in Kenya, East Africa.

This to enable them have better experience of the world at large and free them from cultural bondage that has enslaved them from reaching their potentials.

The group made this known in the country’s capital, Nairobi, while observing the ‘Merck More than a Mother’ annual program which started in 2015.

Member of Executive Board and CEO of Merck Healthcare, Belén Garijo, stressed the decision saying, “I believe in women empowerment and especially childless women, they are mistreated and discriminated in many cultures for being unable to have children and start a family.”

Empowering these women through access to information, health, and change of mind set to remove the stigma of infertility is needed.

Through ‘Merck More than a Mother,’ “We are supporting this strong message together with our partners and we will continue our commitment to improve access to regulated and effective fertility care in Africa.”

The First Lady of the Central African Republic, CAR, Madame Brigitte Touadera, who was also at the summit expressed willingness to work with the Merck Group as it is in line with Central African Republic’s quest for finding solutions to infertile men and women in the country and giving them a chance to bear children as part of their human rights.

She said, “As the champion for the initiative in CAR and for Francophone Africa, I acknowledged the role that ‘Merck More than a Mother’ is playing to break the stigma around infertile women and to raise awareness about infertility prevention, male infertility and the necessity of a team approach to family building among couples which is very critical for Africa.

“It is very important to empower infertile women through improving access to awareness and fertility care so they can bear children as part of their human rights.”

Brigitte Touadera however recalled the susess of the program in other African countries, saying, “In 2016 over 1,000 infertile women in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Liberia, Ghana, Central African Republic and Cote d’Ivoire who can no longer be treated have been empowered socially and economically to lead independent and happier lives through the ‘Empowering Berna’ project.”

First lady of Kenya, Margaret Kenyatta, while receiving the groups on a courtesy visit  at the State house, expressed gratitude and willingness to collaborate with the two organization in realising the set goals.

A Civil Society Organization, CISLAC, tasks government on health hazards of consuming Tobacco

By Amos Tauna

A Civil Society Organization, Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, CISLAC, has noted with dismay the level youths in the country are smoking, stressing that it is enormous and something urgently be done on how people have access to Tobacco.

In a workshop organized for media organizations in North West, Nigeria towards ‘Supporting Effective Tobacco Control Measures in Nigeria,’ in Kaduna on Friday, the programme facilitator, Mr. Okeke Anya, noted that youths were not suppose to have access or sale the products.

“These are things we are preaching for the sake of the good health of Nigerians so that Nigeria will have a healthy society.

“Those standing or sitting around the smokers are also being affected by those smoking, hence it is a hazardous act that should be condemned in all ramifications.

“The regulation for smoking should be quickly passed, set the Tobacco Control Unit and ensure that government get to effective implementation of those laws guiding smoking in the country.

“The idea is for the citizens of this country to know about the act, for citizens not to go against the law and the citizens to know the hazards of taking Tobacco.

“Tobacco industry is not a positive one, it causes a lot of hazards to the people. The act therefore will control the use of Tobacco to a minimal level in the country and manufacturers will not put anything they have into the market.

“Tobacco packaging should be carried out in line with international standard. It is only in the developing countries that Tobacco companies come in and do whatever thing they like at the detriment of the citizens’health.

“Tobacco act is a health related act and it is to protect the health of the citizens. Everything must be done to ensure that Nigerians are in good health and not to suffer on account of any particular product.

“These companies are coming in without being properly checked because there is no clear guidance on how to come in and operate. They should therefore operate based on laid down laws.”

Re: Obasanjo Storms Out Of Police Event Over Delay

0

It has come to the notice of the Zone 2 Headquarters reports making the rounds in national dailies that ‘Obasanjo Storms out of Police Event over Delay.’

In as much as it is a statement of fact that there was delay in the taking off of the First Special Training and Capacity Development Seminar held at the Federal Palace Hotel, yesterday March 2, 2017, due to exigencies of the policing job, the truth must not be skewed to suit personal or pre-determined stances.

The special guest of honour, Former president Olusegun Obasanjo in his usual fatherly manner and once being a uniformed personnel himself, came into the hall and still went ahead to deliver his remarks as earlier scheduled.

He would have shelved his remarks were he truly angry as insinuated. In fact, the former president took his time to pose for pictures with dignitaries, seminar participants and other people individually (as is evident in the picture used in the said stories) – a clear sign he did not ‘storm’ out of the event as alleged.

What was misconstrued as a swipe against the force was nothing but Baba’s usual jolly nature and world famous penchant for throwing banters. The pictures attached to this rebuttal clearly show that nothing was amiss and there is no cause for alarm.

The Nigeria Police wishes to state clearly that it would never disrespect any elder statesman or anyone at all by deliberately keeping them waiting.

The AIG Zone 2, AIG Kayode Aderanti, mni uses this medium to enjoin news reporters to maintain objectivity, devoid of personal inflections and misleading tendencies when turning in their stories.

The general public is hereby urged to disregard the story as a lone error in situation appraisal that it truly is.

16 Percent Of Kaduna Women Want Family Planning, But Lack Access

0

By Longtong Ibrahim

About 16% of women in Kaduna state, northwest Nigeria want to space their births, but cannot do so due to absence of commodities and service providers in their localities. This is happening despite ongoing interventions by various partner organizations in the state.

Other factors that continue to hamper uptake of family planning services in the state include unequal distribution of qualified family planning service providers, inadequate supply of consumables, attrition of service providers, and poverty.

At the closure and Dissemination of Family Health Plus (FH+) Project in Kaduna, participants have called on Kaduna state government and other partners to take proactive measure that will ensure the provision of commodities, consumables and service providers, so that many more women would have the opportunity to take up the services.

The FH+ Project is a family planning support programme that trained service providers and supplied some of them with smart phones to tract and report data from their facilities.

The three year project was undertaken by a Consortium Group of three, comprising Marie Topes International Organization Nigeria (MSION); Marie Stopes International, Palladium Group. It was funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Speaking at the occasion, Marie Stopes Regional Director, North-West, Leonard-Angelo Viashima, said, to encourage uptake of FP services, his organization in conjunction with the Kaduna state Family planning coordinator, mapped out 120 facilities, out of which 85 were selected; conducted training of five master trainers who trained services providers, and in turn served 182, 286 women.

He added that Marrie’s Stopes had trained over100 FP service providers and healthcare providers in the state.

While calling on the Kaduna state government to improve the security level in the state, he noted that, fear over security concerns had affected service delivery in such places, adding that advocacy activities to such areas also became difficult.

He noted that, in its three year programme, “nearly 92,000 were served in 2014/2015, while in the last part of 2015/2016, in areas where insecurity had increased, number has dropped down and our concentration was more in the North where there seems to be adequate security.”

He added that, MSION further supported the Kaduna SMoH with some items in order to boost services in its facilities among which include; IUCD insertion and removal kit, Job aids, implants insertion and removal kits, IEC materials were donated.

In his remarks, the Kaduna state Commissioner of Health, Dr. Paul Manya Dogo, who was represented by Dr. Ado Zakari lauded the activities of the organization, saying Kaduna state is opportune to have partners in FP.

He also expressed delight over FP acceptance in the state, adding that, the religious and social-cultural challenge is close to an end, as many have better understanding of child birth spacing.

Nigeria’s Wildlife Status And A Need For Urgent Action! World Wildlife Day 2017: “Listen To The Young Voices”

“My interview with hunters and most recent research across protected areas in Northern Nigeria revealed that there is lesser wildlife in our wild than we perceive.” – Adebote Seyifunmi, March 2017

After the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly on December, 1983 the 3rd of March was adopted as a day to celebrate World Wildlife Day yearly, the day is observed to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild fauna and flora. World Wildlife Day also seeks to recognise the important roles of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in ensuring that international trade of Wild Flora and Fauna does not threaten the survival of species.

The theme of World Wildlife Day 2017 “Listen to the Young Voices”, is a step further from last year’s theme, “The Future of Wildlife is Our Hands” to ensure the realization of CITES objective in the 182 member states of the United Nations, Nigeria inclusive. It is believed that one-quarter of the world’s population is aged between 10 and 24; hence, as the future leaders and decision makers of the world, they could give more vigorous efforts if properly enlightened and encouraged to call the shot in making and taking decisive actions at both local and global levels to protect endangered wildlife.

The peculiarity of Wildlife in Nigeria is highly disturbing, calling for urgent action, especially when one considers that the level of wildlife literacy in the country is next to none. With reference to last year’s World Environment Day, June 2016, Amina Mohammed who until her recent UN’s appointment was the Minister of Environment said, “The status of wildlife in the country leaves much to be desired, as the rate of depletion of the population of animals like the elephants, leopards, giraffes and crocodiles amongst others is frightening. Today I know that if somebody says, what is really the status, or figures for wildlife in Nigeria? I am not sure I can tell you as the minister of environment. And if I am going to say something, it is probably 10 years old in terms of its information and data,”

It almost a year after Amina Mohammed promised that the government would develop the capacity to know what the baseline was, what animal was where, which was endangered, what needed to be done to protect those animals and to increase their population in Nigeria for the sake of the wildlife. The truth today is that presently Nigeria’s wildlife is fast disappearing than before, thus, begging the question of what wildlife heritage our generation will preserve.

For long, Nigeria has rested on an erroneous notion that our wild animals were plentiful and not under any threat of extinction, however, following the recentpublication of the IUCN red list of globally threatened species which revealed that 148 animal and 146 plant species found in Nigeria were threatened at various degrees including some species near extinction, we hope it is not too late to right the wrongs. Out of the very large landmass that Nigeria boasts of, we are not assured of the functionality of our 7 National Parks, we are not sure they really are a refuge for what we have left of our wildlife population, we are yet to see wisdom in prioritizing our wildlife heritage, we have chosen not to take a cue from smaller countries like Gabon with 13 well-managed national parks, Egypt with 25 national parks and Kenya with 23 national parks only aside game reserves, wildlife sanctuary and other forms of protected areas in countries like Botswana, South Africa, Tanzania and Madagascar are clear examples for Nigeria to follow.

“100 Cross River gorillas remain in Nigeria”,“There are approximately 450 savanna elephants in Nigeria” “Fewer than 50 lion remain in Nigeria”, “Value of illegal wildlife trade is 50 – 150 billion USD per year”, “Over 56 billion farmed animals are killed by humans every year”,“Half of world’s wildlife was lost in last 40 years”, “100,000 African elephants were killed in last three years for their ivory”,“Less than 7,100 cheetahs remain in the wild”, “Population of birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish has declined by 52 percent globally between 1970 – 2010” waking to read these and many more anti-wildlife true statistics tell that the time for urgent action is now.

My interview with huntersand most recent research in protected areas within Northern Nigeria revealed that there is lesser wildlife in our wild than we think. Regrettably true, human factors like hunting, domestic grazing, land deforestation, mining,road/rail/dam construction, aerodromes, power line, and related activities have destroyed our wildlife flora and fauna than natural factors like climate change and fire occurrences by over 40 per cent in the last 25 years. Another adjoining factor is that occupants of host communities earmarked as protected areas see their surrounding areas as traditional hunting grounds and strongly believe it is legal to kill whatever and at any rate.

Ministry of Environment must stand up to their pro-wildlife responsibilities and not just dwell on sanitation and other urban activities. The Federal Ministry of Environment and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture & RuralDevelopment, must create an operational synergy between associated government and non-government stakeholders among which are; Nigeria National Park Service, the Forestry Research lnstitute of Nigeria, State Ministries of Agriculture and NaturalResources, the Division of Wildlife Services and Conservation, Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA), games reserves, zoological and botanical Gardens, World Conservation Society, Nigeria Conservation Foundation, Biodiversity Conservation Programme, etc.

If Nigeria must go for wild, if we must have something to teach the unborn ones about our wildlife heritage, the foundation is in placing Wildlife as a priority sector, then theappointment of competent and devoted hands that will faithfully uphold the hundreds of excellent national and international conventions, acts, frameworks and legislations without compromise which Nigeria has agreed to, among other UN member states.

Monitoring and data compilation must complement environmental education and awareness; the fiercest of wild animals cannot protect itself from those out to poach or illegally traffic them, it’s up to you and me, together we can restore Nigeria’s Wildlife heritage and give a voice to the younger ones.

An explosion has killed three suspected suicide bombers in Maiduguri after one of them detonated an explosive device by stationed fuel tankers.

The attack occurred early Friday morning, along Damboa Road, where two fuel tankers burnt as a result of the explosion.

An eye witness told AFRICA PRIME NEWS that the road was barricaded by security men including the police and military, making passage on the road difficult for commuters.

“anybody passing along that road is forced to change their route. Many have to go through peoples plots, others have to change their routes completely off their course before returning to the road again.

“It occurred near CNB quarters”.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) North-East, spokesman, Abdulkadir Ibrahim, said bodies of the three suicide bombers have been evacuated by emergency workers.

He added that “The fire has been brought under control while causality evacuation has been concluded.”
