You Can’t Intimidate, Blackmail Us — Nigerian Workers Tell El-Rufai

By Mohammad Ibrahim

gov. El-RufaiKaduna (Nigeria) — Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) Kaduna state chapter, say they will continue to demand for the rights of workers in the midst of blackmail and intimidation in the state.

In a statement, NLC Chairman, Adamu Ango and his TUC counterpart, Shehu Mohammad, the duo said, no amount of campaign of collumny from any quarters would deter leadership of the unions from demanding for its rights and the rights of workers in the state.

According to them, the demand for workers to indicate their choice to belong to the union or not, is tantamount to an infringement on their fundamental human rights.

They maintained, that the union membership is a constitutional issue which is
above the jurisdiction of any state government, saying that, labour unions would resist any attempt to polarize and create disharmony among its members.

It advised workers in the state to remain resolute and be law abiding while conducting their duties.

They also urged the state government to publish the names of those workers that they are aiding and the ghost workers in the state, as well as make same available to NLC, TUC Kaduna state councils for necessary action.

Adding that the colossal amount involved, N500,000,000,00 per month; is big enough to assist the government in its developmental programmes.

By Bello Adisa

imageKaduna (Nigeria) — A group, Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, has called for the immediate resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s petroleum minister.

A statement by President of the group, Isah Abubakar, in Kaduna Wednesday says it observes that since the pronouncement himself [Buhari] as Substantive Minister of Petroleum, the situation and availability of petroleum products, especially that of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS in the market has become difficult.

Abubakar says Buhari should not only resign and appoint a substantive minister of petroleum resources for effective service delivery, but also relieve Kachikwu as minister of state for same ministry.

The statement reads: “President Buhari should appoint a Group Managing Director for Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation and relief the minister of state for petroleum resources of double appointment.

“We realize that since Mr. President pronouncement of himself as Substantive Minister of Petroleum, the situation and availability of petroleum products especially that of premium motor spirit (PMS) in the market as become difficult, indicating total failure on the part of Mr President as the Minister of petroleum resource and Ibe Kachikwu as Minister of State and GMD of NNPC.

“We demand that Mr. President hire a competent hand to handle the ministry and appoint a new GMD for NNPC as this will enable effectiveness and productivity in the ministry and agency.

“We understand that your administration has good intention for the masses and the country but the scarcity of petroleum products in the market have inflate more pains on us as a people.

“The cost of transportation, food items and other essential household commoditities had drastically increase.”

The group threatened massive protest if the situation persists.

“We wish to emphatically state that if this condition persist, Nigeria Youth will not hesitate to mobilize ourselves across the country for massive protest, this we believed will shutdown the economy of the country as we are already in consultation with other civil society organization to map out effective National protest,” the statement concludes

Northern Nigeria Group Canvasses Support For Buhari On Fuel Scarcity

By Bello Adisa

Kaduna (Nigeria) — A group, Arewa Defence League (ADL) has asked Nigerians to support President Muhammadu Buhari on his new strategies of solving the fuel scarcity Nigerians currently suffer from.

A statement by the ADL President, Murtala Mohammed says,‎ “the call has become imperative in view of the present challenges occasioned by the unavailability or shortage of petroleum products, particularly the Premium Motor Spirit ‎(PMS) also known as petrol.

“While we acknowledge the temporary hardship being faced by Nigerians, we wish to say President Muhammadu Buhari’s administrations efforts to restructure the Nigerian Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)‎ for a more efficient service delivery in the sector is quite commendable.

“We believe strongly that the President and the minister of state for petroleum are on top of the situation to provide a permanent solution to the persistent fuel scarcity in the country.

“It is no longer a secret that the present administration inherited a catalogue of huge problems in the petroleum downstream sector, fraudulent and unbelievable arrears of subsidy payment owed oil marketers, ‎corruption and inefficiency in the supply and distribution chain, incessant pipeline vandalism and poor working condition of the refineries.

“We therefore call on Nigerian‎s to support and partner with the present administrations commitment at ensuring that petroleum products and supply are not interrupted.”

The group observes that the call on the minister of state for Petroleum Ibe Kachikwu to resign, was unnecessary.

“We are equally disturbed by the recent statement credited to a national leader of the ruling party calling for the resignation of the Minister of state for petroleum, this call we believe is an indirect condemnation of Mr Presidents tireless efforts to stabilise not only the petroleum sector but also the economy as a whole.”

Nigerian Government To Citizens: We Are Working Hard To Relive Your Pains

Kaduna (Nigeria) — Nigerian government says it is aware of the difficulty its citizens currently facing over the lingering fuel scarcity and poor power supply, and that it is working round the clock to provide the relief for the citizenry.

”As a government that was propelled into office by the power of the people, we cannot but feel the pains of our compatriots, and we deeply empathise with them,” the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said in Abuja on Wednesday.

”Our message to our compatriots is that this Administration, under the able leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, is working round the clock to ease the pains of Nigerians, and that very soon, the efforts of the government will begin to yield fruits for the benefit of Nigerians,” he said during a visit to the corporate headquarters of Daily Trust newspaper, as part of his tour of media establishments in the country.

Mohammed said the Government is aware that Nigerians have started questioning the genuiness of its Change Agenda, adding: ”We understand the skepticism of Nigerians in questioning whether this indeed is the change they voted for. I can tell Nigerians that our Change Agenda is real, and that indeed Nigerians will get the change they voted for.”

On the fuel situation, the Minister said immediate measures are being taken to end the scarcity while medium and long term solutions are being worked out to prevent a recurrence.

”Petroleum supply and distribution have been ramped up across the country by the NNPC to ensure product availability in the country, but repeated trips to filling stations and the backlog are making it impossible to immediate feel the impact

”Monitoring has also been intensified to ensure full compliance with approved prices. Violations of approved prices and hoarding of petroleum products attract severe penalties, including ‎giving out of petroleum products free to the public, sealing off of fuel stations found to be hoarding petroleum products, payment of fine as well as withdrawal of Marketer’s License,” he said.

Mohammed said that in the medium term, the supply constraints due to foreign exchange challenges are being resolved through collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria on innovative ways of closing the gaps in accessing foreign exchange.

He also announced the willingness of the International Upstream Oil Companies to support major oil marketing companies with some of the required foreign exchange, thus complementing the efforts of the NNPC which has been solely importing the refined products, in addition to the fact that the Corporation is pursuing an improved model for ‘crude oil for refined product’ exchange to eliminate inefficiencies.

”The ultimate is to ensure self sufficiency in refined products supply by ramping up our local Refining capacity. All local Refineries will be made to run at a minimum 70% capacity utilization in the weeks ahead. This is in addition to the initiative of increasing the combined capacity of the domestic refineries through co-locating smaller but cost efficient modular refineries within the existing refineries premises,” the Minister said.

On the power situation, which he blamed largely on lack of gas supply to the power generating stations, he said the NNPC is seeking alternative sources of gas supply after the attack on the Forcados Export Pipeline forced the cut off of gas supplies to the stations.

The Minister said even the gas supply that was cut off following the attacks on the Forcados Pipeline would soon be restored as Shell, the operators of the pipeline, has awarded the contract to repair it.

In addition, he said, work is nearing completion on the transmission projects in five states in the South-East and South-South that will ensure that the power stations in those regions are able to work at full capacity, thus adding another 800MW to the national grid

”While we give no excuses for the challenges currently being faced by Nigerians, because they voted for us specifically to address those challenges, we appeal to them to bear with us as we strive to provide the much-needed relief in the days ahead,” the Minister said.

HALF OF AMERICANS THINK BIBLE IS BEST HOPE FOR POLITICIANS

President Obama recently called the current election cycle “vulgar,” suggesting that the tenor of the current presidential campaign is divisive and damaging to the reputation of the United States. It seems that many Americans agree.

In the 2016 State of the Bible: The Bible and Politics released today, American Bible Society found that 51 percent of American adults surveyed think politics would be more civil if politicians read the Bible on a daily basis. In addition, 53 percent of those surveyed believe politicians would be more effective if they read the Bible on a regular basis.

The survey, commissioned by American Bible Society and conducted by Barna Group, shows that nearly half of Americans (46 percent) believe the Bible has too little influence in society, while those who think the Bible has too much influence has waned to just 19 percent; down 13 percent from the 2011 report. Furthermore, the overwhelming majority of Americans surveyed—80 percent—view the Bible as sacred literature, a percentage unchanged from last year. And more Americans, 66 percent compared with 69 percent in 2015, also agree that the Bible contains everything a person needs to know to live a meaningful life.

“Americans still believe the Bible has the power to improve the most uncertain or tumultuous of life’s challenges—even politics—when God’s Word is allowed to influence them. At American Bible Society, we see the transforming power of Scripture everyday, from broken families being restored to men and women overcoming trauma to teens being released from addiction,” said Andrew Hood, director of communications of American Bible Society. “We have a 10-year goal of seeing 100 million people in the U.S. experience the transforming power of the Bible by engaging with it. Whether a politician or a preacher, a truck driver or a teacher, all can have their lives positively changed by God’s Word.”

The State of the Bible is an annual report from American Bible Society on behaviors and beliefs about the Bible among adults in the U.S. For more information about the latest State of the Bible, visit AmericanBible.org.

Survey Methodology:
The 2016 State of the Bible: The Bible and Politics report contains the findings from a nationwide study commissioned by American Bible Society and conducted by Barna Research (a division of Barna Group). Two research methodologies were used for the study; one included 1,008 telephone interviews (including cell phone interviews) with adults in all 50 states in the U.S., while the second study consisted of 1,000 online surveys using a nationally representative panel. The use of two methodologies provided a larger sample size for key questions and ensured even greater representation among all age groups. The telephone interviews were conducted Jan. 20 – 28, 2016, and included U.S. adults 18 years of age or older. The online surveys were conducted Jan. 28 – Feb. 16, 2016.
