Southern Kaduna Youth and Students Forum in northern Nigeria have reiterated their resolved for a showdown with governor El-Rufai if the closed schools in the area are not reopen for academic activities.

They have also called on the governor to reopen the schools or face vote of no confidence from them.

Kaduna State government had during the heat of crisis in Southern Kaduna in December 2016 closed the Kafanchan campus of Kaduna State university, College of Education, Gidan Waya, as well as School of Nursing, Kafanchan for security reasons.

Addressing newsmen in Kaduna, northwest Nigeria on Tuesday, National President, SKYSFOM, Galadima Jesse said, “We wish to start by expressing our dissatisfaction and disappointment with the administration of Governor Nasir El- Rufai.

“It is a government that has no regard for the freedom of expression as enshrined in our constitution.

“However, our three weeks ultimatum which commenced on 12thJune, 2017 for the governor to reopen the schools still stands, and we intend to pass vote of no confidence on the governor if he refuses to reopen our schools after the ultimatum.

“He has also no regard for the educational advancement of the people of Southern Kaduna and the institutions located within the zone.

“It all started on 12th June 2017, when we were supposed to address the world and plead with the Governor on the reopening of our tertiary schools through the media, but to our greatest dismay, you were witnesses to the harassment we faced by heavily armed policemen set to truncate our civil way of advocacy through the barricading of the NUJ secretariat by fully armed policemen.

“The main issue we want Nigerians to know is the despicable and inhumane treatment meted to students through the closure of the College of Education, Gidan Waya, the Kafanchan Campus of the Kaduna State University and the School of Nursing, Kafanchan.

“These schools were closed down since December 2016 and up to now, they remained closed. Infact, the Kafanchan Campus of the Kaduna State University was closed down on the 19th of December, 2016 and has remained closed since.

“College of Education Gidan Waya was also officially closed on the 20th of December 2016 but educational activities were already paralysed since late October due to the attacks on communities close to the school that wasn’t quickly tackled.

“The reasons given by the State Government is ‘insecurity’.  We find that laughable, ridiculous and an indictment on the government.

“Assuming that the excuse of insecurity is valid, then how come all other schools – private and public, state institutions, state agencies, markets and so many other institutions and facilities have been open all these while?

“Doesn’t the continued closure of the three tertiary institutions indict the Government that it has been unable to secure it citizens?

“Isn’t it also an indictment and an indirect way of saying that the security personnel drafted to Southern Kaduna, including a permanent military formation, is directly telling us that it is not able to secure the three schools?

“Can the state Governor explain to us why the University of Maiduguri that has been persistently attacked and bombed remains open today, while the tertiary institutions in Southern Kaduna, that have never been attacked or bombed should be closed for close to a year?

“Is the State Governor still trying to give a wrong impression to the outside world that Southern Kaduna is still in crisis when peace has returned to the zone?

“Which is more difficult; to reopen the Kafanchan Campus of KASU and continue with normal lectures, or transfer the students to the main campus in Kaduna, as the Governor is trying to do? We say no to that.

“Isn’t it ironic that while the three tertiary schools in Kafanchan remain deliberately locked, the Governor is busy trying to increase his educational laurels at the University – Merit in the Netherlands as a part-time PhD student? Then why is he denying other young Nigerians their right to also get educated? We are sure it’s because none of his children attends any of the closed schools.

“With all these, we make bold to say that Governor Nasir El-rufai is deliberately and methodically trying to slow down the educational growth of the people of Southern Kaduna and the institutions located within. This is a serious crime against humanity that the Governor is guilty of and we make bold to say that we the students will lawfully and legally resist him.

“Consequently, we demand the immediate reopening of the tertiary schools in Kafanchan so that our members can go back and continue with their studies, because this same Governor has told the world that normalcy has returned to Southern Kaduna, then why is the Governor contradicting himself by ensuring the schools remain closed through the guise of insecurity? We say no to that!

“We call on all our members of the affected institutions never to get frustrated to the point of throwing away the garb of civility that we have been pursuing this issue.  We assure them that we will never rest until they return back to school.

“In the meantime, we are organizing educating programs to engage their minds within the idle period.”

Nigeria: Arewa Youth Forum Wants Nnamdi Kanu Re-Arrested Over Call For Election Boycott

The Umbrella Organization of Youths in northern Nigeria, Arewa Youth Forum (AYF), says it is worried with recent threats to peaceful co-existence of the nation as occasioned by calls from various groups on restructuring the nation.

AYF notes that recently, it cautioned some youth in Northern part of the country, who issued ultimatum to people of South Eastern extraction to vacate the region before October.

Its National President, Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu in a statement said their concern lies in the fact that, “we believe in the oneness of Nigeria and the strength the country is getting and can still get from its diversity as a strong entity in the African continent and the world at large.”

2019 Elections, Nnamdi Kanu’s Call and the Danger of Igbo Leaders Silence

The Arewa Youth Forum, (AYF)  the Umbrella Organization of Youths in the north is worried about the developing situation in the country and the threat to peace, unity and development of the country.

Recently AYF has cause to call for caution when some Northern Youths gave persons of South Eastern extraction in the north ultimatum to vacate the region before October.

This is because we believe in the oneness of Nigeria and the strength the country is getting and can still get from its diversity as a strong entity in the African continent and the world at large.

However truth be told, the Northern Youths were provoked by the unnecessary and persistent calls for  disintegration by the Indegenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) and MASSOB. In the same vein Nnamdi Kanu has started calling on his people to boycott the November Governorship election in Anambra and the 2019 elections in the whole of the South East.

To our consternation,  this is happening when the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is meeting with stakeholders across the country to strengthen the bond that binds us together as one a laudable effort.  But it is unfortunate that the Federal Government and even leaders of thought and politicians especially those of Igbo extraction has not deem it necessary to condemn him or call him to order.

We also amused while the call for the arrest of Northern Youths is still on, nobody is saying anything about the provocation of Nnamdi Kanu. To add salt to injury this is someone that have severally and serially violated his bail conditions with reckless abandon and he is working free.

As a Stakeholder in the Nigerian project, it is our responsibility as the umbrella Organization of Youths in the north to rein in our members and advocate peaceful coexistence as a panacea for enduring peace and development of all. But a situation where those from other regions and the Federal government is not seen to be up and doing leaves much to be desired.

It is because of this  that we are immediately calling on the Federal Government bring Nnamdi Kanu to book, because his call to disrupt the polls in the region is a threat to peace in the country.  The court to also order for his re arrest as his has serially violated his bail conditions.

AYF is also calling on leaders from the South East to immediately call Nnamdi Kanu to order just as Patriotic Northern  elders did when Igbos were given ultimatum in the north.  A situation where the leaders from the zone are seen to be indirectly given Nnamdi Kanu support will further divide the country and alienate the South East from others in Nigeria.

Remarks by Nigeria’s Acting President Osinbajo On 2017 Eid-el-Fitr

0

Excerpts from Remarks by Acting President Osinbajo when he received a delegation of Religious, Traditional and Political Leaders in Sallah Homage at his Residence — June 25, 2017

The first time that I attended Iftar, Mr President invited me. And I recall asking him, when he invited me, that are Christians allowed to attend Iftar? And he said, so long as you’re hungry, you can attend. If you’re hungry, let’s go and attend this Iftar. Since then he’s invited me to everyone. The way the President receives the Muslim Ummah for the Homage — I have attended every single one since 2015 — so I’m very experienced, having been well schooled by Mr. President.

What the Government of President Muhammadu Buhari has always emphasized is the unity of the faiths. There is every reason for us to work together as brothers and sisters despite our different faiths. And the President himself has demonstrated that in so many ways, by ensuring balance in everything. And you know that at Christmas, I’m not even around to attend the homage that is paid to him by Christians, I always tell him that that he’s going to do by himself, because I usually take off at Christmas and try and get myself a holiday if I can. So he receives the Christians by himself, and usually I just hear about what happened afterwards.

I want to say that unity of the faiths is so important; it’s very very important. And the reason why it’s important is because the best attributes of citizenship can be found in the faiths. What are those attributes? Love for one another, Integrity in our relationships, with ourselves, with government resources and funds, the desire to do good for the majority of our people; to do right by the majority of our people.

When you look at the hundreds of thousands of our people everywhere in this country — and I’ve been around this country — poverty is the same. It doesn’t wear a different face whether you’re poor in Lagos, or you’re poor in Sokoto or you’re poor in Aba, poverty is the same; hunger is the same, wherever you are. If you’re hungry you’re hungry, your religion doesn’t matter. Your ethnicity doesn’t matter.

And that is why for us, it is so important that we work together to make sure that our country is able to take care of millions of its people. And this is what God expects of us — God expects us to take care of the poor, to take care of the suffering, to ensure that we use Government resources, only in such a way as to enhance the good of the majority of our people. That is what is expected of us. And that is recognized in the Islamic faith, and it is also recognized in the Christian faith; that we must act in such a way that the majority of our people benefit and are happy.

Just yesterday I’m sure that you heard the President’s message which he sent on the occasion of the celebration of Eid El-Fitr, where he said that this country must remain united. And the reason that he gave is that there are so many countries of the world who envy what we have, our endowments as a nation, and that we must remain united because it is only in our unity that we can enjoy those endowments to the fullest.

And I want to urge every one of us that our unity as a nation is not negotiable; we should make sure that we remain united. There are people who say, oh, we’re better apart than together. That’s not true. There are so many small countries all over Africa. One of the reasons why we’re respected and in some cases revered and feared is because we’re a big nation. One out of every four black people in the world is a Nigerian. We are a geopolitical power because of our strength in numbers and our diversity. That’s why we’re a geopolitical power. Our relevance comes from our size, the size of our market, and our diversity, and the fact that anywhere you go, Nigerians are probably the smartest people you’ll ever meet anywhere.

We have a great country. I’m so happy that we’re able to sit together, Muslims and Christians to celebrate Eid El-Fitr together, and to enjoy it together. And just as I close, one thing that I would miss about this period of fasting is the Iftar.
