The leadership of CAN 19 Northern States and Abuja, has condemned in strong term the latest display of lack of nationalism by some groups and individuals from some sections in Nigeria hiding under the guise of agitation.

A press statement issued by the chairman and Public Relations Officer, Rev. Yabuku Pam and Rev. Joseph John Hayab after an rmergency executive session with chairmen and secretaries of state chapters, youth wing and WOWICAN to review the state of the nation in Kaduna, northwest Nigeria said, “We recognise the right of groups and individuals to agitate for whatever rights for the growth and progress of their people but also wish to say that any agitation that goes to the extreme with the use of words and violent conduct is wrong and not good for our collective unity and progress as a nation.

“We, therefore, call on the agitators in every part of this country to consider our togetherness more expedient and productive than any sectional interests.

“We also wish to make it clear that we are stakeholders in the region called ‘North’ or ‘Arewa’. We, therefore, condemn the hasty and ill-informed display of lack of thoughtfulness by a group  by the name ‘Arewa Youths’ and their sponsors asking Igbo to leave the north of Nigeria with a timeline.

“Let the world know that we disassociate ourselves from this call, and after consultation with Christian youths across the region of northern Nigerian (Arewa) they too, have condemned the pronouncement in the strongest term and disassociate themselves from the so called group.

“We support government and all groups that have publicly condemned this act and any other divisive call by any group in this country.

“We are appealing to all the Igbo living and undertaking businesses in the North to keep calm and not be daunted, but instead, should strategize how to expand their businesses and services in the region.

“They are fellow Nigerian citizens whom we love so dearly and appeal to them to consider the utterances and actions of the so-called ‘Arewa Youths’ as an aberration, and not a Northern collective standpoint in any way.

“The government must also ensure the protection of all Nigerians wherever they choose to live in this great country.

“We call on all Nigerians to desist from threatening one another as we should be our brothers’ keepers. Without a doubt, nations are built and sustained by unity, not division.

“The government should as a matter of urgency start considering the best ways that will address issues that have led to agitations by revisiting the last National Conference’s Report and get the National Assemblies to begin legislative processes of contentious matters.

“We, CAN 19 Northern States, caution all those who are beating the drums of war to recognise that they are doing so for themselves because the equation of this country today has changed from that of 1967, and no one is ready and willing to sacrifice his/her life for an agenda that is not worth the expense such as that the agitators have contrived.

“We call on sundry to talk and walk peace for the betterment of our country.”

The Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, has approved N50 million for the digging of trenches and building of sand hills around the University of Maiduguri as a means of averting further attacks by Boko Haram, an official said.

Spokesperson of the governor, Isa Gusau, in a statement notes that the trench will go round the 27km radius of the university’s landmass.

According to Gasau, “Governor Shettima announced that he was releasing the fifty million naira not only to fund the digging exercise but also to support payment of allowances to special guards drawn from local vigilantes who are to work with the military in policing porous areas.

“The trenches are being designed to make it impossible for insurgents to drive into the university and also create difficulty for insurgents to cross on foot while the military will take advantage of being at the top to neutralize insurgents.

“Even though the University is a Federal institution, it was also part of Borno Government’s responsibility to intervene in securing lives and preventing the desire of insurgents to force the close down of the school,” the statement pointed out.

University of Maiduguri has since January this year becomes a major target of Boko Haram suicide bombers.

More than five persons including a renowned professor of veterinary medicine, were killed in the attacks.

Recently, Union Bodies in the school have called on the Federal Government to build the perimeter fence at the varsity and approve the N2.8 billion requested by the University authority to procure modern security equipment to stop Boko Haram from executing “greater attacks” on the campus.

The Kaduna state Government in northwestern Nigeria has appealed for calmness among students of the closed tertiary institutions in southern part of the state, saying schools will be reopen as soon as security clearance is gotten from the security council of the state.

The government also stated that it has no agenda to relocate the tertiary institutions or kill education in any part of the state; instead it is making all efforts to uplift the standard of education in the state.

On Tuesday, the Southern Kaduna Youth and Students Forum (SKYSFOM) threatened to pass vote of no confidence on the Kaduna state Governor, Nasir El-rufai, if he fails to reopen the closed tertiary institution for academic activities in the area after the ultimatum it gave. They also accused the state government of trying to kill the education sector in the area.

Briefing newsmen on Wednesday, the Kaduna state government through it commissioners – Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Andrew Jonathan Nok and the Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Paul Manya Dogo, said as soon as the security committee is satisfy with the security situation of the region, school activities will resume fully, noting that, security issues of the state is not determine by the government alone but by the Security Council comprising of all the security outfits in the state.

“We have not received clearance to go ahead and reopen the closed schools, but we are making frantic effort to see that they are reopened. Alternative arrangements were put in place for students of the Kafanchan campus to come down to the Kaduna campus in order to meet up and earn sufficient credits with accommodation provided for them,” the Education Commissioner, Andrew Nok said.

He added that, having known the repercussion of one students being killed in any crisis situation, the student’s security is of great concern to them, as such allowing them to come from towns is risky since there are no hostels in the campuses.

On allegations that all tertiary institutions would be relocated from the region, the commissioner explained that, construction works are still ongoing in the Kaduna state university campus to put more life into it while programs run in the campus are included in Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board Exams to admit students for 2017/2018 sessions.

“In the month of May Security Council gave its approval for final year student of the College of Nursing and Midwifery to write their final year examination, and also two weeks back, students of the preliminary training school wrote their entrance examination, with adequate security provided. That shows that there are no any bad intentions concerning the schools in the region by government,” Commissioner of Health, Paul Manya Dogo pointed out.

He however called for understanding and cooperation with government to see that security situation is improved in the state.

Corroborating what the commissioners said, Senior Special Assistance to the State Governor on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwa, added that arrangements are put in place to build a security base around the College of Education, Gidan waya campus.

The State had closed the Kafanchan campus of the Kaduna State University (KASU), Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Kafanchan and the Kaduna State College of Education Gidan-waya since December 2016, following security challenges in the area.

Says It Is A Threat To The Institution

Trade unions of the University of Maiduguri (Unimaid) in northeastern Nigeria have described Federal Government as insensitive to the security threats by Boko Haram in the varsity, alleging that the government inaction on the security situation was helping in giving boost to Boko Haram ideology.

Briefing newsmen in Maiduguri on wednesday, leader of the unions and chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Dani Mamman, noted that, “Boko Haram proclaims western education as forbidden and the University of Maiduguri is at the forefront of championing western education in the country. So for Boko Haram, sustained attacks on the university would attenuate the insurgents’ wild ideology.”

Mamman said ASUU, SSANU (Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities), NASU (Non-Academic Staff Union), NATT (National Association of Academic Technologies), and Student Union Government (SUG) of the University were compelled to bring to the public the precarious security situation and threats to life at UNIMAID.

According to him, the increasing Boko Haram attacks in the state in recent time shows that the insurgents were regrouping again, warning the government to wake up to its responsibility. He said the unions were particularly worried that neither the minister of education nor a Federal Government delegation has visited the University since January 16th when the first Boko Haram bombing on the campus that killed a professor of veterinary medicine, Prof. Aliyu Usman Mani.

He said the government action reflected its “insensitivity to the plight of the University, students and parents” that lost loved ones; adding that government inaction also tends to support Boko Haram ideology against western education making the insurgents keep the tempo of attacks on the campus, the latest being multiple explosions on June 25.

“That was the eight (8) deadly attacks within five months,” the ASUU chairman said.

He disclosed that 70 professors and other staff that fled the university in the wake of incessant attacks have started returning only to be confronted with suicide bomb attacks even while peace was gradually returning to the troubled state.

He however urged the Federal Government to build the perimeter fence at the varsity and approve the N2.8 billion requested by the University authority to procure modern security equipment to stop Boko Haram from executing “greater attacks” on the campus.

The unions threatened to disrupt academic calendar of the University should the Federal Government fails to act in time, PR Nigeria reported.
