Gombe (Nigeria) — A Non Governmental Organisation in northeast Nigeria, Wildan Care Foundation, is seeking support of media to make case for more women in elective positions in Gombe State in the coming 2019 general election.

Executive Director of the group, Zariyatu Abubakar made the call Wednesday when officials of the organisation paid an advocacy visit to the secretariat of Nigeria Union of Journalists (Correspondents’ Chapel) in Gombe.

She said, Wildan Care Foundation was on a sensitization visit to stakeholders across the state such as the media, political parties and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) among others.

The Foundation decried the outcome of recently conducted local council election in the state where no single woman was elected, either councillor, or chairperson across the 11 local council areas.

“We want women to be part of decision making in both the formal and informal sector of the society,” she said.

She said the group apart from seeking improved participation by women in election matters, is also concerned on issues of women and children particularly those in conflict situations.

Commenting further, Jamila Suleiman, State Coordinator, Women Situation Room Nigeria, solicits men’s cooperation to allow women participate actively in election.

She recalled how during the 2015 general election, at a polling unit (in Kyari Primary School in Kwame local government area) with over 400 registered voters, no single woman came out to cast vote.

“I was monitoring the election in Kwame and I was shocked to see that no single woman came out to cast her vote in a particular polling unit. I sought to know from the women after noticing that they were actually registered as voters. They said their husbands prevented from going out to vote,” she narrated.

Mrs.  Zariyatu who is also the Northeast coordinator, Women Situation Room Nigeria said Wildan Care Foundation is also working to provide care, support children and empower women.

She said the group is collaborating with the Women Situation Room Nigeria to harness the leadership resources of women for effective participation and contribution in peace building process, economic and human development.

Responding, Chairman of the Correspondent Chapel, Abdullahi Tukur of Federal Radio Cooperation of Nigeria, assured them that media would support their mission.

Uganda Bans Civil Servants From Wearing Long Nails, Flat Shoes, Miniskirt, Other Dresses

Ugandan public servants have been banned from wearing dresses showing cleavage, skirts above the knee, and having long nails or dyed hair to work.

The country’s Ministry of Public Service on Wednesday directed all permanent secretaries and Chief Administrative Officers to enforce a strict dress code for all public officers.

A circular issued by the Ministry’s Permanent secretary, Catherine Bitarakwate Musingwiire, pointed out that all officers are required to dress decently and in the generally acceptable standards in the Ugandan society.

According to the statement, female officers, “should avoid wearing sleeves, transparent blouses or dresses to work places and also ensure that clothing covers up cleavage, navels, knees and back.”

Female officers will also not be allowed to appear for duty in open flat shoes except on a doctor’s recommendation/medical grounds, wear bright coloured hair, in form of natural hair, braids and hair extensions.

Those who choose to wear trousers may do so but the trousers must be in “form of smart lady suits with jackets, long enough to cover the bosom”.

The circular directs that male public officers are required to dress in neat trousers, long sleeved shirts, jacket and a tie. Open shoes are not allowed.

Director of Human Resource in the Ministry, Adah Muwanga, added that, the rules were meant to respond to public outcry over indecency. She said, “We got complaints that some public officers are indecent. Some female officers are pumping up their breasts, wearing mini-skirts… You are sexually harassing the male counterparts and in Uganda this is not acceptable.

“We are mindful of the perception of the public to our officers. Do you feel okay when you have nails several meters long? It is not neat and healthy and we have to care about the health of public officers,” she added.

The Botswana government on Tuesday announced that they have suspended export licenses for donkeys and donkey products such as meat and hides.

Spokesperson of Botswana Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security, Geoffrey Pheko, said the government has “noted with concern the indiscriminate and cruel slaughter of donkeys for their hides which are exported to lucrative markets in Asia. In this regard, issuance of all export licenses relating to donkeys and their products for export purposes is suspended indefinitely with immediate effect.”

The National Council of Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (NSPCA) commended the Botswana government for taking the firm stance on protecting the welfare of donkeys and their owners.

The NSPCA has been investigating the slaughter of donkeys for their skins for over a year and has six prosecution cases in this regard.

The slaughter of donkeys for their skins has led to a multitude of welfare and social problems including donkeys being butchered in horrific manners, the theft of donkeys, and the devastation this has on the people and communities who rely on them.

These problems are not restricted to South Africa but are also affecting neighboring countries such as Lesotho, Botswana and Namibia, eNCA.com reported.

In March 2017 a delegation from the Donkey Sanctuary UK and the NSPCA met with representatives from the Botswana Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security to discuss the concerns with the Donkey Skin Trade.

The head of the European Union’s election observer mission in Kenya says it’s no secret there are concerns about possible violence in next month’s (August 8th) presidential election.

Kenya a decade ago faced postelection violence that left more than 1,000 people dead and 600,000 displaced from their homes. It was arguably the worst upheaval the East African nation had experienced since independence from Britain in 1963.

Marietje Schaake with the EU observer mission warns that election violence would create a situation where everybody loses. The mission launched Monday.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is seeking re-election against a challenge by opposition leader Raila Odinga, whom he beat in the 2013 vote. Kenyatta supporters have accused Odinga of planning violence if he does not win, News24 reported.

Niger’s Regional Governor, on Tuesday said, Boko Haram terrorists have kidnapped 37 women and slit the throats of nine other people at a village in southeastern Niger.

Governor of Diffa region, Laouali Mahamane Dan Dano said the attack happened on Sunday at the village of Ngalewa, near the border with Nigeria.

He said, “Boko Haram elements… slit the throats of nine people… they took women, 37 women, and departed with them.

“The defence and security forces are already in pursuit, and we hope that in the coming days these women will be found and freed.”

The governor, who went to Ngalewa on Monday, said the village had been singled out because it was known for its resistance to the terrorist.

The village’s mayor, Abari El Hadj Daouda, told AFP by phone that the attack happened on Sunday evening, “between 22:00 and 23:00”.

The village lies a few kilometers north of the town of Kabalewa, where there was a suicide attack last Wednesday.

In April 2014, Islamist militants seized 276 schoolgirls from the remote northeast Nigerian town of Chibok, triggering global condemnation and drawing attention to the bloody Boko Haram insurgency.

Boko Haram’s eight-year of insurgency has killed at least 20,000 people and rendered many homeless.

A Zimbabwean man, Lawrence Moyo, who allegedly teamed up with his wife and brother-in-law to kill his mother-in-law – who they believed was a “witch” – has appeared in court, a report says.

Local newspaper, Chronicle, reported that, Moyo pulled out one of the teeth of the 53-year-old Inna Ncube, which he believed she used to “bewitch” people. He also stomped on her stomach a number of times.

Moyo told Gweru Magistrate Phathekile Msipa that he had been exorcising her of evil spirits.

Moyo was not asked to plead, but he confessed to have killed his mother-in-law with the assistance of his wife and brother-in-law.

According to him, his wife had told him that Ncube had a tooth that she used for witchcraft purposes. He also added that, “We also prayed for her while others were holding her throat and hands. We then retired for bed. The next morning, we discovered she was dead. I don’t know why the police haven’t arrested my wife and brother-in-law since we committed the offence together”.

Meanwhile, Moyo has been remanded in custody until July 11, pending a high court bail application.

In January 2017, a Zimbabwean man (30), allegedly struck his 75-year-old aunt with an axe in following a witchcraft row, killing her instantly, News24 reported.

Gombe (Nigeria) — Gombe, a state in Northern Nigeria, has joined other states in the country to invest in health facilities aimed at checking maternal deaths.

The northeast region, where Gombe is located accounts for the highest rate of maternal deaths in the country. The 2013 National Demographic and Health Survey shows the maternal mortality ratio for the northeast region as high as 1045 deaths per 100,000 live births.

The poor health indices has prompted the Government to spent one billion naira in the construction and equipping of an ultra-modern pregnant women and children Hospital in the state capital.

This is part of the “effort to save the lives of pregnant women and children.” says State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kennedy Ishaya at the launch of MamaYe E4A campaign in Gombe.

According to him, the hospital is equipped with modern facilities and can compete favorably with its counterpart in advanced countries, adding that Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo is passionate about maternal and child health.

Dr. Ishaya further explained that the hospital, the first of its kind in the northeast Nigeria was built at the cost of N500 million, while equipment at the facility gulped another N500 million of the State funds.

While decrying the alarming maternal and newborn deaths in the zone, the health commissioner said the Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo administration has taken appropriate steps to tackle the issue.

“Statistics have shown that the North East is losing women and children over preventable issues. The situation is not that bad in Gombe State, because of the steps taken by the government,” he said.

He disclosed that Governor Dankwambo has tremendously expanded health facilities, trained more skilled health workers, as well as created the enabling physical space towards providing quality healthcare for pregnant women and children.

Dr. Ishaya said that at the time he was appointed commissioner, he met only 177 nurses and midwives manning the 22 secondary health facilities across the state.

He said however that the state government is currently training over 1000 nurses and midwives.

He also commended Governor Dankwambo for upgrading the state owned School of Nursing in Gombe, as well as the School of Laboratory Technology Kaltungo to Colleges of Nursing and Laboratory Technology, respectively.

The commissioner disclosed that plans are underway to elevate the College of Nursing Gombe to a Monotechnic to allow for the training of more skilled workers in the health sector.

He assured Mamaye, as well as all other development partners in the state that government would provide enabling environment to succeed in the quest to better the lives of the people of the state.

Speaking at the event, Country Director for Mamaye in Nigeria, Dr. Tunde Shegun said Mamaye is currently running similar campaigns in five other African countries with a view to rising the public’s expectation of maternal and newborn survival.

Represented by Mrs. Fola Richie-Adewusi, Country Director reemphasised that the organisation uses evidence to drive advocacy, as well as drive accountability in public expenditure towards efficient use of resources.

“Mamaye is not a project, but a campaign that everyone is expected to play a role. The key issue in Mamaye is keeping MNH in the spotlight”, the country director said.

While decrying the high rate of maternal and newborn deaths in the northeast, Dr. Segun commended Gombe State government for initiating projects aimed at mitigating the issue.

He also urged the state government to put more effort in the bid to save the lives of pregnant women and children.
