Binniyat has been in prison custody since July 12, 2017 when he was arraigned before Justice Bashir Sukola.

The High Court had on 20th July, 2017 granted stringent bail conditions to Mr. Binniyat before Justice Sokula with two sureties were to bring their international passports with N10m each and a bank bond to that effect to the amount of money pending the duration of the case.

The case was adjourned to October 9 following an appeal for adjournment filed by the prosecuting counsel led by Kaduna State Director of Public Prosecution, Bayero Dari on Thursday at Kaduna State High Court 10.

Dari had filed an instant application for adjournment citing the change of prosecuting counsel, with the defence counsel, Barrister James Kanyip opposed, but failed to overturn the ruling.

This was the realization after his case was adjourned to October 9, following an appeal for adjournment filed by the prosecuting counsel led by Kaduna State Director of Public Prosecution, Bayero Dari on Thursday at Kaduna State High Court 10.

Dari had filed an instant application for adjournment citing the change of prosecuting counsel, with the defence counsel, Barrister James Kanyip opposed, but failed to overturn.

While speaking to newsmen outside the court, Director of Public Prosecution, Dari, said that the adjournment was not deliberate.

He explained that the instant adjournment was necessary because the case had been transferred to a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), who has been debriefed and needed time to go through the case file.

When fielding questions, lead counsel to the accused, Barrister Kanyip, said he was disappointed that the bail condition review was not done at Thursday’s sitting.

He argued that the motion for review of the bail condition was filed since August 7 and the prosecuting team had ample time to study it.

Barr. Kanyip promised to seek redress at the Court of Appeal if his motion was not treated satisfactorily.

When I conceived the thought to write about Elephants as part of efforts to mark the World Elephant Day – August 12, I got a link with a note about how an endangered species –Gorilla was killed and butchered by hunters in Sapele, Delta State, Nigeria. The images were so gory.

We habitually excuse the ignorance of such perpetrators and justify such jail-worthy offense by hunger. The truth we are yet to tell ourselves is that we deny our generation and those unborn the enormous benefits that wildlife avails us.

The murder of the Gorilla in Sapele is just one of the many unlawful killings of our priceless and irreplaceable creatures which are fast heading to extinction; all because of our unsustainable human activities.

Elephants are a wonderful part of our existence, they are the world’s biggest land animal with many unique features; long trunks, broad thick legs and large floppy ears used to emit heat from its body. I personally can’t imagine the world without Elephants, hence my decision to join my voice with a million others to mark World Elephant Day, August 12th.

Remarkably, some recent studies describe elephants as probably the smartest land animal. They are seen to be very clever and intelligent as demonstrated in their display of altruism and innovation to find solutions to their challenges; however, these solutions are largely beneficial to the survival of other animals in the wild.

An Elephant’s long trunk can spot a smell about four times as sensitive as a tracking dog (bloodhound), reports show that elephants can smell water several miles away, this has made them the kings of the wild in seasons of drought as other animals sort to move around elephants in the knowledge that it will smell and dig out water for the lot; But what then do we benefit from conserving wildlife as humans?

Most medical discovery and recent breakthrough were made possible because by the presence of animals. Some of them are majorly adopted from the life style of animals then improved for the benefit of humans as observed in equipment and machines we use. We can’t live without them. Conserving these animals could help grow our enthusiasm towards science, hence new and improved innovations could be achieved from studying animal behaviours.

Elephant, as well as other wild animals, if conserved and properly managed could help grow our nation’s economy through Eco-tourism and give our landscape some priceless aesthetic values as seen in some developed nations. Imagine how much income would be generated through group visits, tours, exhibitions and research to conservation areas, parks and nature reserves? Put an estimate to how many idle hands will be gainfully employed?

The earlier we know that it is our duty to protect and conserve our ecosystem because they are unique to us, the better for us. Folks with these understanding should wildly share this knowledge; government is encouraged to lead with policies, strategies, and enforcement to ensure that we promptly reduce poaching and illegal killings of wildlife knowing that we are all part of a web of life when one individual disappears others are the risk of disappearing as a result.

“When the last trees cut down, when all the animals are hunted, when all the waters are polluted, when the air is unsafe to breathe, Only then will we realize that one cannot eat money”. – Cree Prophecy.

iPhone 10 Years Later: The phone that almost wasn't

iPhone users awaiting the arrival of Apple’s next-generation smartphone now have a date to circle on the calendar.

Apple (AAPL, Tech30) will hold its annual product launch — where it typically shows off new iPhone models and other product updates — on Tuesday September 12.

For the first time, the event will be held at the spaceship-shaped Steve Jobs Theater on its new Cupertino, California headquarters, expected to open later this year.

This year is expected to be a big one for Apple, since 2017 marks the 10-year anniversary of the iPhone. Rumors indicate the company will introduce three new devices at the event: the iPhone 7S, iPhone 7S Plus and the so-called iPhone 8, which will be the 10th anniversary edition.

The iPhone 7S line is expected to feature incremental updates, but the anniversary phone could get a whole new look.

Apple event invite
The invitation sent to members of the press.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was recently photographed with a taller iPhone in his pocket, which lines up with rumors that it’ll come with a 5.8 inch display. To put that into perspective, the iPhone 7 is 4.7 inches and the iPhone 7 Plus is 5.5 inches.

The anniversary device is also expected to include an OLED display that has richer colors, wireless charging, a virtual home button and facial recognition technology. There’s lot of speculation about its price, too, which could start at $1,200 — twice the cost of an unlocked iPhone 7.

Apple is also expected to reveal its first cellular Apple Watch and a 4K Apple TV set-top box at the event.

Although the launch event is slated for September, it may take a while for customers to get their hands on a new iPhone. Some analysts believe the anniversary device could be in short supply, citing “constrained supplies.”

Northern Nigeria Quit Notice: Emulate Your Northern Counterparts — ACF to South East leaders

0

By Amos Tauna

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has called on South eastern governors and Ndigbo leadership to emulate their counterpart in the North by calling Biafran agitators to order.

A statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, in Kaduna Wednesday said that the grievances could be best addressed through dialogue not through violent agitations, threats and intimidation to lives and property.

The forum also urged all Nigerians to avoid hate speeches and acts that are capable of jeopardizing the peaceful coexistence of the country.

The statement reads, “The Eid-el-Adha or Eid-el-Kabir is a Muslim festival that is celebrated annually in the month of Zul-Hajj all over the world by Muslim faithful, where rams are slaughtered in obedience to Allah’s command. It is also a period of sacrifice and a reflection on the significance of the letter and the spirit of the festival.

“The Muslim Ummah are therefore enjoined to be steadfast in propagating what Islam stands for, among which are love, good neighborliness, accommodation, compassion, support for the needy and peaceful coexistence.”

The statement added, “Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, hereby, wishes to extend its felicitations and good wishes to the Muslim Ummah and other Nigerians on this special occasion of Eid-el-Kabir. May the lessons of the sacrifices translate into unity of purpose and love for Nigeria.

“We urge all Nigerians to be patient with one another, with government and continue to have hope as our current socio-economic challenges are not beyond redemption, considering government’s systematic efforts in diversifying other sectors of the economy.

“However, ACF has observed with concern the open disagreement among agencies of government over simple administrative issues that are capable of affecting unity of purpose with clear thought and morality.

“Nigeria cannot afford avoidable divided presidency, as it is not helpful to our democracy and development. ACF therefore appeals to the agencies concerned to guide against actions that can be sand bags on the path of efforts to deliver on the promise of democracy.”

It appealed to leaders at all levels of government to be God’s fearing, just, sincere and responsible in discharging their duties, while exhibit decorum and civility in words and deeds.

“We particularly appeal to our youths as leaders of tomorrow, to avail themselves to government empowerment facilities and engage in lawful productive ventures that will add value to themselves and the community, rather than be vanguard of destruction that comes with frustrations. We should make the most,” the statement explained.

Nigeria: Madamai, A Kaduna Community In Dire Need Of Water

*Residents, Animals Compete To Drink From Same Stream

 By Mohammad Ibrahim

30-year-old Deborah (not her real name), a housewife in Madamai community, in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna state, northwest Nigeria, treks a kilometre daily to fetch water from a nearby stream for her domestic chores.

Her 10-year old daughter and 8-year old son, usually wake up as early as 5 am to accompany her to the stream to fetch the water.

Deborah and her children are not the only ones in the village who wake up early to rush to the stream to fetch water, and sometimes to wash their clothes.

Esther, another resident and also a housewife, said, “any woman who wants water, must wake up as early as possible” to join other women from the community at the stream to fetch the water.

These women and their children have to go to the stream early each day in order to fetch water before animals in the community go there to drink. Once the animals start drinking, “it becomes difficult for any person to fetch again,” she said, because the water becomes contaminated.

“We drink water from the same stream with some of the animals in this community. So, in order not to drink after the animals, women wake up early to go and fetch before the goats and pigs are released by their owners”, Andrew Lekwot, also a resident Madamai village, confirmed to visiting staff of Christian Aid, an International NGO, alongside their local partners and development journalists, who visited the area.

Residents narrated to the visiting team how water always become scarce in the village, particularly during dry season, even though some say, water from the only stream near the village never dries up, as it lasts the whole year.

They described it as a clean natural water, despite the fact that it is covered with leaves without knowing where the stream flows from.

It was also observed that two boreholes provided by a member of the House of Representatives, Gideon Goni in the community were not functioning.

“The first borehole provided in the area was about ten years ago by our Lawmaker, and since it stopped functioning, we couldn’t get it repaired. This is because despite about 25,000 naira spent by people in the community to get it repaired, it still stopped functioning.

“There was another water pump provided in our church premises, which has also stopped working. This is why we are having water shortage in the community, but thank God for the stream where the women trek a kilometre to get water from. It’s same water our animals in the community drink from,” he said.

The Village Head, Galadima Bulus, equally buttressed the point by appealing to local government authorities to help them solve the water issue in the area.

“Presently, we, our women and the kids always suffer from Typhoid. We think it has to do with the water we drink. So we need help from meaningful individuals and government,” he said.

An official of a Non-Governmental Organization working in the community on Voice2People, a governance project, also called on Local and Kaduna state government to assist the people by providing a water tank beside the stream and install a machine to pump water into the tank for benefit of the community.

He/She says the gesture will help protect inhabitants from drinking the water alongside their animals, as well as preserving the water throughout the year.
