2018 World Cup: Egypt’s president rewards players and coach

Seven-time African champions Egypt have never won a match at the World Cup finals

Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has given a bonus of $US85,000 to each of the players who clinched a place at the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.

A 2-1 win over Congo Brazzaville saw them qualify for the global showpiece for the first time since 1990.

The president announced the reward on Monday as he met the Argentine coach Hector Cuper and the players.

“Maybe we don’t play beautiful football but we are at the World cup and that’s the most important thing,” Cuper said.

Al-Sisi had special praise for match-winner Mohamed Salah, who scored a penalty in injury time to secure the qualification.

“I am proud of all the players but especially of Mo Salah who was brave enough to take the crucial penalty,” the president said.

“Also thank you to coach Cuper who has made our dreams come true.”

Liverpool forward Salah was already looking ahead to Russia.

“We are determined to make the country and continent proud in Russia,” Salah said.

“I am very happy to lead Egypt to a World Cup after 28 years and to make a 100 million proud of us.”

The Pharaohs have won a record seven Africa Cup of Nations titles but have only been to the World Cup twice in 1934 and 1990 and are yet to win a game at the finals.

Israeli spies ‘watched Russian agents breach Kaspersky software’

Israeli spies looked on as Russian hackers breached Kaspersky cyber-security software two years ago, US media report.

The Russians were allegedly attempting to gather data on US intelligence programs, according to the New York Times and Washington Post.

Israeli agents made the discovery after breaching the software themselves.

Kaspersky has said it was neither involved in nor aware of the situation and denies collusion with authorities.

Last month, the US government decided to stop using the Russian firm’s software on its computers.

The Israelis are said to have notified the US, which led to the ban on Kaspersky programs.

The New York Times said that the situation had been described by “multiple people who have been briefed on the matter”.

Integrity ‘fundamental’

Classified documents are reported to have been stolen from the home computer of a US National Security Agency (NSA) employee who installed Kaspersky’s antivirus software.

The NSA, the White House and the Israeli embassy in Washington have not commented on the matter.

The New York Times said that the Russian embassy had not responded to a request for comment.

Kaspersky has published a statement saying that it was not involved in and does not have knowledge of the situation.

“As the integrity of our products is fundamental to our business, Kaspersky Lab patches any vulnerabilities it identifies or that are reported to the company,” the statement said.

“Kaspersky Lab reiterates its willingness to work alongside US authorities to address any concerns they may have about its products as well as its systems, and respectfully requests any relevant, verifiable information that would enable the company to begin an investigation at the earliest opportunity.”

The firm added that it has never helped, nor would help, governments in matters of cyber-espionage.

Eminem attacks Trump in freestyle rap at BET Hip Hop Awards

0

Eminem has brutally criticised US President Donald Trump in a new video.

The rapper calls him a “racist 94-year-old grandpa” and slammed fans who back the president during a four-and-half minute freestyle.

“Any fan of mine who’s a supporter of his, I’m drawing in the sand a line, you’re either for or against,” he raps in the film, shown during last night’s BET Hip Hop Awards.

Twitter users can’t wait to see whether Mr Trump will respond.

In the video for freestyle The Storm, Eminem is shown in a car park, stepping towards the camera to rap directly to viewers.

“If you can’t decide who you like more and you’re split on who you should stand beside, I’ll do it for you with this,” he says, raising a middle finger.

The 44-year-old slams Trump for focusing on NFL players who “take a knee“, and causing drama on social media.

“This is his form of distraction, plus he gets an enormous reaction when he attacks the NFL, so we focus on that instead of talking Puerto Rico or gun reform for Nevada,” he says.

“All these horrible tragedies and he’s bored and would rather cause a Twitter storm with the Packers.”

The rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, also calls the president racist.

“Racism’s the only thing he’s Fantastic 4 cause that’s how he gets his rock off, he’s orange.”

And he praises former president Barack Obama.

“We better give Obama props ’cause what we got in office now is a kamikaze that will probably cause a nuclear holocaust while the drama pops,” he says.

American footballer Colin Kaepernick, basketball player LeBron James, Snoop Dogg and J. Cole are among those tweeting their appreciation for the freestyle.

But it didn’t go down well with everyone.

This isn’t the first time the Detroit rapper has criticised Mr Trump.

Last year he released the nine-minute freestyle Campaign Speech in which he calls the president a “loose cannon” who “doesn’t have to answer to no-one”.

Cardi B was the big winner at the BET Hip Hop Awards, taking five trophies including Single of the Year for Bodak Yellow.

Kendrick Lamar took four awards, including Album of the Year and DJ Khaled, Nicki Minaj and JAY-Z were also successful.

Guinea and Niger will complete their group matches on Friday against Germany and Brazil respectively

Guinea earned their first point at the 2017 Under-17 World cup in India with a draw against Costa Rica while Niger lost 4-0 to Spain on Tuesday.

Costa Rica twice took the lead but goals from Fandje Toure and Ibrahima Soumah salvaged a point for Guinea.

After Saturday’s a 1-0 win over North Korea, Niger were brought back to earth by Spain.

Niger were 3-0 down by half-time after Abel Ruiz’s brace and one from Cesar Gelabert. Sergio Gomez added a fourth.

Guinea 2- Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s Yecxy Jarquin opened the scoring after 26 minutes but the lead lasted just five minutes as Fandje Toure scored his second of the tournament.

Midway through the second half Andres Gomez restored the advantage for Costa Rica only for Ibrahima Soumah to earn Guinea a point with nine minutes left to play.

Guinea, who lost their opening match 3-1 to Iran on Saturday, will complete their Group C campaign on Friday against Germany.

Spain 4-0 Niger

After a promising opening few minutes Niger were let down by some poor defending as Spain took control of the match in the first half.

Ruiz scored the first goal after 21 minutes with a simple tap in after Niger’s defenders inexplicably failed to clear a cross from the left.

The Barcelona youngster added a second when he reacted quickest as his own shot was charged down by the Niger defence.

On the stroke of half-time Gelabert added a third as he volleyed in from close range off a cross from Gomez.

Gomez scored himself in the 83rd minute as he fired in from the edge of the area through the legs of two Niger defenders.

Niger have a tough looking final Group D match on Friday when they play Brazil, who beat Spain 2-1 in their opening game in India.

The Spanish also complete their group campaign on Friday as they take on North Korea.

Police in the Indian capital Delhi have arrested five people after a video circulated showing what appears to be a mob severely beating a Nigerian man.

They have also detained the Nigerian, whom some residents accused of theft.

The video shows four or five men using sticks to beat a man of African appearance who has been tied to a post.

There was a spate of attacks on African nationals living in India last year, including one in which a Congolese man was beaten to death in Delhi.

Police said the latest incident happened on 24 September, and the Nigerian victim was also arrested due to a theft allegation.

A resident of the Savitri Nagar neighbourhood claimed the man broke into his house and tried to steal valuables from his room, police said.

“It is a case of attempted burglary. Those living in the house got alerted. They caught him and beat him up,” Dependra Pathak, chief spokesperson of the Delhi Police told the Press Trust of India news agency.

In March, five Nigerian students were attacked by crowds, while another was beaten by a mob inside a shopping mall living in Noida, near Delhi.

Six months ago, African ambassadors in India criticised the government for not doing enough to stop a string of alleged racist attacks on Africans in Delhi.

Image caption Kaduna will iron out discrepancies in teacher-pupil ratios, the governor says

Thousands of primary school teachers in Nigeria’s northern Kaduna state are to be sacked after failing the exams they set for their six-year-old pupils.

State governor Nasir El-Rufai said 21,780 teachers, two-thirds of the total, had failed to score 75% or higher on assessments given to pupils.

He said 25,000 new teachers would be recruited to replace them.

Mr El-Rufai made the comments at a meeting with World Bank representatives in the state capital, Kaduna.

“The hiring of teachers in the past was politicised and we intend to change that by bringing in young and qualified primary school teachers to restore the dignity of education in the state,” he was quoted as saying by Nigeria’s Daily Trust newspaper.

Mr El-Rufai said problems with pupil-teacher ratios across the state would also be addressed.

He said some areas currently had one teacher for every nine pupils while in other areas the ratio was one to 100.
