Nigerian Cleric Warns On Global Warming

0

By Amos Tauna

Kaduna (Nigeria) — The General Overseer, Christ Evangelical and Life Intercessory Fellowship, Yohanna Buru, said that the worsening air pollution and deforestation arising from bush burning are increasing the threat of Climate change and Global warming in Africa.

Biblically, Buru explained, that Climate change started in the Holy Bible where God created the climate, stressing that man was made to take care of the environment instead of destruction.

He added that God set them on cause, to work according to His plans, purpose and design, pointing out that the seasons produce the climatic environment. “And in regards to the issue of climate change, the Holy Bible doesn’t so much talk directly on the issue like climatologists, geologists or ecologists are talking or approaching it,” he explained.

Buru noted that almost everything about climate change was understood more from the fall of man and the eschatological perspective as a sign of end of times.

“The details on this can be seen in the book of Revelation, where Apostle John the Revelator gave a graphic picture of the sign of end of times. That there will be a drastic change from the climatic perspective, and that will affect every aspect of human life.

“In fact, that will cause famine, pestilences, excessive heat, plants, livestock, living things will be affected as they dry up or died. Because of this disaster that will befall the earth as a result of climate change, there will be earthquakes in diverse places, raging of seas or storms and other climatic problems such as geological, ecological and other environmental problems,” he said.

Buru therefore called on people of all faith to make efforts in planting trees to be able to save the environment  from all forms of climatic threats.

Gombe (Nigeria) — Over 300 people have benefited from free medical services by National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), in Rafin Kada village of Taraba State, northeast Nigeria.

The State Coordinator, Altine Japhet Akyam disclosed this said, the Corps members carried out the outreach in nine other locations across the state and hopes to reach out to even more remote and difficult terrain areas to ameliorate the plight of the people.

She regretted that most rural dwellers had no access to medical care and children were lost to common illnesses like diarrhoea and common cough.

“The NYSC is really concerned that most people at the rural areas are dying daily from avoidable causes. Its is in light of this that the NYSC has come up with this programme to reach out to as many communities as possible to provide relief to the people who have  no access to medical care. I call on the people who are well to do to partner with the NYSC so that we can reach out to as many communities as possible”, Akyam said.

Represented by Assistant Director Community Development Service, CDS Birdling John, she explained that the initiative was a way of reaching out to  host communities where Corps members are serving due to the nationwide outreach of Corps members and solicited for co- operation to enhance the success of the programme and to reach out to more villages.

In his remarks, the village head of Rafin Kada , Daniel J Agyo, said that the people were most delighted that this was happening in their domain. He said that “this is the first  of its kind. We are optimistic that it would bring the much needed relief ,our people yearn for.

One of the beneficiaries , Ayuba Ayuana, who appreciated the NYSC for the initiative prayed that God would provide the grace for the programme to be extended to other remote areas in the state.

Ayuana said that her aged grandmother had been sick for weeks without medical care since the maternity clinic in the area had no drugs and she had no money to take her to the city but has now been attended to and given a lot of drugs.

One of the Doctors who attended to the people Dr. Emmanuel Bulus said that the Corps members would hold tests for High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Malaria, Typhoid and counselling on health matters especially maternal health, environmental cleanliness, dieting and others.

Bulus said that they were excited to deploy their training to ameliorate the plight of their hosts and hope that more of such opportunities would come their way before the end of their service year.

The Corps members who attended to the people include medical Doctors, Pharmacists, Nurses, Lab technicians and others.

Earlier, the state Commissioner for Finance and Budgeting ,Jessey Ashumete, who supported the funding of the programme said that the initiative was one of the best things that the NYSC has come up with and called on other government officials and business men  to support NYSC to reach out to their people with their vast manpower.

Immunisation: a child receiving a drop of polio vaccine

Gombe (Nigeria) — Gombe State Primary Health Care Development Agency (GSPHCDA), in northeast Nigeria, has called on media organisations to sensitize public on the importance of Immunisations.

Deputy Director in charge of Immunisation, Musa Ibrahim Kuna,, made the call in Gombe at the State level sensitisation and review meeting with media organisations in the state.

He noted that in spite of campaign all over the state, there were still cases of resistance in some areas, hence the need for media involvement in the campaign.

“We do not want a situation whereby we will use force on people, what we want is to accept it willingly and we are counting on you the media, sensitize the public before the next round of immunisation scheduled for Saturday,” he said.

He said since 2013 the state did not run out of stock, it had everything available, yet people are not coming to receive it.

“We have 501 Primary Care Health facilities out of which 483 were conducting routine immunisation, but people were not coming,” he said.

He appealed to parents to change their attitude to utilise what they have while it is still available.

“These donor agencies that were providing the vaccines for us free of charge may be no more in the country with time.

“Therefore it is good to make use of every single opportunity at our door steps,” he said

Responding, the media organisations promised to do everything humanly possible to ensure that people who were resisting start to embrace the facilities.

Trump ‘insensitive’ to soldier’s widow, lawmaker says

US President Donald Trump told the widow of a soldier killed in an ambush in Niger that “he knew what he signed up for”, a lawmaker has said.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson said she heard some of the “insensitive” remarks made by phone while she was in a car with Sgt La David Johnson’s family.

Mr Trump, she said, then added: “I guess it still hurt.”

A White House official said Mr Trump’s conversations with the families of fallen servicemen were private.

Sgt Johnson, 25, was among the four US soldiers killed in 4 October in an area where Islamist militants, including al-Qaeda fighters, operate. His widow, Myeshia, is expecting the couple’s third child.

In an interview with CNN, Ms Wilson said Mr Trump’s call happened shortly before Sgt Johnson’s casket arrived in Miami: “Basically he said, ‘Well, I guess he knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurt’.”

The Democrat congresswoman said she listened to part of the conversation on speaker phone.

‘Just crying’

Talking to ABC News affiliate WPLG, Ms Wilson added: “Yeah, he said that. To me that’s something that you can say in a conversation, but you shouldn’t say that to a grieving widow.

“And everyone knows when you go to war, you could possibly not come back alive. But you don’t remind a grieving widow of that. That’s so insensitive.”

The full context of the remarks are not known. Ms Wilson said that when she asked Ms Johnson about the exchange, she said she could not remember.

“She was just crying. She couldn’t say anything. The only thing she said when it was time to hang up was thank you, bye-bye,” she said on CNN.

The alleged remarks sparked angry comments on social media, with Ms Wilson saying on Twitter that Mr Trump did “not possess the character, empathy or grace to be president of the United States”.

Mr Trump had been criticised for not contacting the families of the four soldiers killed right away. On Monday, he said he had written letters to the relatives and planned to call them soon.

The White House later said the president had spoken to the families, but did not say when.

Trump’s latest travel ban blocked by federal judge

US President Donald Trump’s latest bid to impose travel restrictions on citizens from eight countries entering the US has suffered a court defeat.

A federal judge slapped a temporary restraining order on the open-ended ban before it could take effect this week.

The policy targets Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Chad and North Korea, as well as some Venezuelan officials.

Previous iterations of the ban targeted six Muslim-majority countries, and were widely referred to as a “Muslim ban”.

The state of Hawaii sued in Honolulu to block Mr Trump’s third version, which was set to go into effect early on Wednesday.

Hawaii argued in court documents that the revised policy was fulfilling Mr Trump’s campaign promise for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States”, despite the addition of North Korea and Venezuela.

It also argued the president did not have the powers under federal immigration law to impose such restrictions.

US District Judge Derrick Watson, who blocked Mr Trump’s last travel ban in March, issued the new restraining order.

The president’s controversial travel bans have each been frustrated by the courts to some degree.

  • In January, the president signed an order banning people from seven Muslim-majority countries and suspending all refugee entry. The so-called “Muslim ban” prompted protests and legal challenges across dozens of states.
  • A revised version exempted green card holders and dual citizens. By June, the Supreme Court allowed most of it to go into effect – but granted a wide exemption for those with a “bona fide connection” to the US.
  • That was replaced by Mr Trump’s latest order, announced in late September, which changed the criteria and added non-Muslim-majority nations North Korea and Venezuela.

In Hawaii, Judge Watson decided that the new policy “suffers from precisely the same maladies as its predecessor”.

He said “it lacks sufficient findings that the entry of more than 150 million nationals from six [of the] specified countries would be ‘detrimental to the interests of the United States'”.

His decision temporarily blocks the ban on all targeted countries except North Korea and Venezuela.

The ban is also facing court challenges from Maryland, Washington state, Massachusetts, California, Oregon and New York.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement the latest order was “dangerously flawed” and “undercuts” efforts to keep Americans safe.

“These restrictions are vital to ensuring that foreign nations comply with the minimum security standards required for the integrity of our immigration system and the security of our nation,” she said.

She said the White House was confident the president’s “lawful and necessary action” would eventually be upheld by the courts.

As it stands, the Supreme Court has delayed its consideration of the case from October, asking all parties to resubmit briefs to the court accounting for the changes made between the second and third versions of the order.

“She was bleeding coupled with the delay encountered before getting medical attention, the woman died on the way,” he said.

Nigeria: Shortage Of Doctors Hits Kaduna Hospital, As Patients Abandoned Beds

0

By Mohammad Ibrahim

Kaduna (Nigeria) — Shortage of manpower, especially Doctors to look after patients at General Hospital Rigasa, a rural community in Kaduna, north west Nigeria, has forced patients on admission to abandon their beds.

Sources in the Hospital say only a female Doctor, who is also the hospital Medical Director and two other National Youth Service Corp member Doctors attend to over 150 people who visit the hospital daily.
.
According to the sources, majority of the patients that visit the hospital for treatment are poor people who can’t afford going to private hospitals.

A visit to the hospital showed how patients spend hours on queue waiting to see the doctor on duty.

Those on queue waiting for the Doctor were mostly women and children, while those in serious pains lied on benches.

A man who brought his mother, but didn’t mention his name lamented on the situation, “We came here as early as 6:am now it’s already 10: am and we are yet to see the doctor.

“The only problem with this hospital is shortage of Doctors, because people come here for treatment, but because there are no doctors to attend to them, they move elsewhere, “he said.

An elderly man too, who brought his daughter said, “The truth is Rigasa General Hospital need more doctors because we are really suffering  before we  see a doctor.

“I brought my daughter who was sick but no doctor is here to see her and you can see the crowd yourself. I think government need to urgently do something about it, “he said.

Aliyu Suleiman a resident of Rigasa who once had his wife admitted in the  hospital has this to say, “The hospital has a good structure, but lacks man power. If not for the Medical Director that is very hardworking many people would have abandoned the hospital completely.

“When my wife was admitted the MD was the only person attending to patients, going round wards to check on other  patients on admission. If not for her, I don’t know what  would have happened to people like us, ” he said.

It was also gathered that the hospital management charge only five hundred naira as bed fee, but still patients abscond because they can’t afford to pay.

A junior staff of the hospital who didn’t mentioned his name because he was not authorized to speak with  journalists said the medical director attend to over 50 patients a day.

“The other doctor that assisted her was on annual leave and the remaining two young doctors are NYSC Corp members which means there are days they don’t come to work.

“For the nurses we only have about 15 of them including those volunteers . We need more man power because the patients are increasing everyday despite the fact that others abscond on admission.

“Yes, we heard the state government is working on recruiting more doctors but we don’t know how soon the doctors will start working. As it’s now the people have to be patient pending when the government  post more doctors to us, ” he says.

Kaduna State Government has however commenced the recruitment of 1,247 health professionals to provide services in its secondary healthcare facilities across the state.

The state Commissioner for Health and Human Resources Dr Paul Dogo confirmed that the government had already recruited 100 doctors, and about 700 nurses to be posted to public hospitals across the state including rural communities.
