Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party Convention: Group Wants All Positions Contested

Kaduna (Nigeria) — A group in the  People’s Democratic Party (PDP), known as People’s Democratic Advocate (PDA), has called on the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the  Party, Ahmed Makarfi to ensure that transparency is the watchword in all elective positions of the party’s national convention.

The group noted that any imposition of candidates in the coming convention would not be in the interest of the party as it tries to reposition itself.

A statement by Chairman of the group in Kaduna, northwest Nigeria, Adamu Ahmed Dattijo, said it aligned itself with the Enugu Declaration whereby the eminent party’s stakeholders unanimously agreed that all political party positions must be contested for at the forthcoming National Convention, especially where there is more than one aspirant to that office.

The group indicted the PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman of trying to deny Abubakar Mustapha the opportunity to vie for a higher position as equity and justice demands.

“Because of the attempted manipulation of the Makarfi led Caretaker Committee to deny Abubakar Mustapha the opportunity to vie for a higher position as equity and justice demands, we are in total support of the Enugu Declaration, because it tallies with the universally acceptable standard definition of equity, fairness and justice.

“We are amazed with the misinformation making the rounds that the position of the National Secretary, which was never zoned has been micro- zoned and even micro-named to Katsina State on the false assertion that both Kaduna and Katsina States are under a rotational arrangement, which confers on each State the right to produce a candidate over the other alternately,” the group noted.

The group stated that it defies any logic and common sense to consider the same scenario with different panacea, adding, “What operates in the caliphate states of Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto is an attestation to our postulations.

“The last occupant of the National Treasurer was from Kebbi State, but the position of woman leader, that ought to be rotated was further micro zoned and micro named to Kebbi State thereby suggesting that the action of the conveners was anything but equitable and just.

“We are aware that the Chairman Caretaker committee in pursuit of his known trait of impunity ,which he has been exhibiting in the course of his duty and in furtherance to his presidential ambition, has decided to stand on grounds where Angels fear to tread by subsuming any person interested within the state under his threshold.

“The Enugu declaration has put paid to any attempt to foreclose any chance for a national contest. We stand resolutely and firmly with Abubakar Mustapha as our aspirant from Kaduna State, for the exalted position of the National Secretary.

“He has the requisite experience, pedigree and competence to manage such an exalted office. We hasten to add that there has ever been any such arrangement of exchange of batons between Kaduna and Katsina States.”

The group  therefore called on delegates to vote massively for Abubakar Mustapha, saying that amongst other candidates, he remains the most qualified candidate based on his antecedents.

Nigeria: Creation Of North East Development Commission a Welcome Development – PDP Chieftain

By Peter Usman

Abuja (Nigeria) – A Chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from the North Eastern part of the country ,Kudla Satumari has commended President Muhammadu Buhari Administration for creating North East Development Commission, NEDC, saying it is a welcome development for the people of the region and Nigeria in general.

in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, Satuari said the situation and condition of the people of the North East deserves a state of emergency to address infrastructure problems, resettlement and rehabilitation of the people among others.

He noted that activities of the insurgency in the region have greatly affected the people and the economy of the North East who are predominantly farmers, adding that the level of production has generally reduced to a great extent.

Satumari, who is also known as Haske, stated that diverstated infrastructures as a result of the activities of the insurgency which cut across the states in the region, such as schools, hospitals, police stations, telecommunications ,electricity and some of its installations that were destroyed by the activity of the insurgency need to be rehabilitated.

“Regarding to the signing of a bill creating North East Development Commission, it is a welcome development considering the fact that what requires for the growth and development of civil society were destroyed by the insurgency and the need for all these to be replaced is very necessary”

“We want to express our appreciations to Mr. President for creating the commission, we have seen consistently some of his policies regarding North Eastern Nigeria were to restore peace, law and order to the region and we hope that the reasons North East Development Commission is established will meet the aspirations of our people” he said.

Satumari who is also the Chief Executive Officer Aerokeys Nigeria Ltd. recommended that qualified people from the region be involved in the management team of the commission, stressing that the managers of the commission should first identify the problems as they affect the people of the region and therefore segment them into short, mid and long terms for better results.

He further advised that resettling and rebuilding the communities that were really affected by the insurgency should be the first priority of the commission before any developmental efforts are considered, maintaining that the people of the region need stability and sense of belonging to start life afresh.

On the youths who were allegedly forced into joining the group responsible for the situation in the North East, Satumari asserted that such people should be empowered into entrepreneurship and those who were traumatized by the situation should be psychologically rehabilitated.

On whether the appointment of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF was a favour to the people of the region, Satumari said the appointment of the new SGF was a replacement of the former SGF and not a favour as some people might have said.

“First of all, the position was given to the North East and there was a situation that led to the removal of the former SGF, so it is only natural that a replacement be found from that region and we are pleased to have someone who is very qualified to replace the former SGF”

“No doubt, he will provide good leadership based on his wealth of experience and I don’t see it as a favour to the North East for this position to return to the same zone, from where it was initially selected and it is also a good thing that somebody was chosen based on merit and not on sentiment or party affiliation”

“We need to come together and put our best forward so that competence will be the guiding principle for any position that is being filled. Nigerians should focus on competence of those in positions and not where they come from” he advised.

Kaduna (Nigeria) — This video has caused roar among some Gombe elders who are politically loyal to the State Governor, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, to condemn Senator Danjuma Goje. To the extent of holding a media briefing apologising to wife of President Muhammadu Buhari over what they described as embarrassment.

Senator Goje, currently representing Gombe Central District in the National Assembly, is the immediate past governor of Gombe State, who handed over power to Mr. Dankwambo.

In the video Senator Goje, speaking in Hausa language, is appreciating Aisha, wife of President Buhari for condolence visit over the loss of his wife, Yalwa.

While doing that, the bereaved expressed gratitude to Mrs Buhari, for bringing Governor Dankwambo to his residence.

Goje said, since becoming governor, Dankwambo had not visited his residence, even while the late Yalwa (the deceased) was sick.

“He used to be part of this household. My wife was his godmother. For seven months she was sick, he didn’t come. He only called after she passed on. Since we inaugurated him at Pantami he didn’t visit this house.

“I have had series of misfortunes, ill-health, with even a death recorded, but he has not seen it fit to identify with me and my family. He didn’t even call to sympathize with us,” Goje said in the video.

The story of the elders’ media briefing is already receiving backlash from residents of Gombe. Below is a reaction from a reader of the story on AFRICA PRIME NEWS.

Kaduna (Nigeria) — It was a sad moment for family, friends and neighbours of a 39-year-old teacher and mother of two, Esther Taiwo Oloriade, who was attacked and hanged by suspected assailants was laid to rest in Kaduna, northern Nigeria on Tuesday.

The unfortunate incident happened on wee hours of Thursday 9th November, after the husband, Gbenga Oloriade had left the house at Angwan Maigero, a suburb of Kaduna, with the two children, while late Esther was preparing for the day’s job.

It was after her colleagues at a private school, Goodnews Academy, where she was teaching did not see her and attempts to reach her through her mobile phone failed, that they alerted her husband, who after his findings, decided to go back to the house to check.

According to the husband, when he got to the house and the car was not on ground, he concluded that she must have gone out.

“But I later discovered that, the sound of the television was louder than necessary. Then I became apprehensive and quickly entered the house and I saw rope on her neck with bruises all over her face. I rushed her to the hospital where she was confirmed dead. It was a saddest moment for us.

“I had left the house together with the children with the plan to drop them off in school, while she was preparing for the school where she was teaching. That was how she was killed and her car taken away by yet to be identified criminals”, he managed to explain.

In recent times, crimes at Angwan Maigero, surbub of the state capital have been on the increase without commensurate security by those saddled with the responsibility of securing lives and property of the people.

Reverend Simon Adewuyi of First Baptist Church (English Assembly) Kaduna, who preached from the Book of II Samuel 12: 18-23 at the funeral of the slain teacher, told the gathering to always do good and serve God faithfully because whether short or long, death is inevitable.

“This is a trying time for all of us. God knows the best and He has a reason for what has happened. How do we continue to live after the demise of sister Taye?

“The church, the colleagues. What then do we need to learn from this? The grace of this hour is to let us know that life is shorter, but dead is certain. If Jesus tarries, who will be the next the time no one knows”, he admonished.

Late Taiwo Oloriade was born on the 16th November, 1978 in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Southwest Nigeria. She was a holder of HND in Food Technology and until her death, a teacher with Goodnews Academy, Damishi, in Chikun local government area of Kaduna State.

She is survived by her husband, two children and aged parents.

Nigeria: Christian Lawyers Fellowship Frowns At Nigeria’s Membership Of Religious Bodies

Kaduna (Nigeria) — Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON), has frowned at Nigeria’s membership of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) and other Islamic bodies.

It described Nigeria’s membership to the religious organisations as a violation of the country’s constitution.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), had asked for the withdrawal of the country from membership of all international religious bodies.

A communique issued Tuesday, by the Lawyers Fellowship President, Arome Okwori and Secretary General, Tunji Omole in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, at the end of its meeting in Abuja, said CLASFON aligns itself with the position of CAN.

It noted that as a secular nation, Nigeria should not belong to any religious association.

It explained, “We therefore lend our voice in support of CAN for the federal government to recognise the secular status of Nigeria by withdrawing the country from membership of these religious organisations.”

The communique also frowned at the scrapping of the Customary Court of Appeal in Nasarawa State by a mere executive pronouncement by Governor Tanko Almakura, saying his action “constitutes flagrant disregard of the constitution and respect for the rule of law”.

The Fellowship called on the governor to retract his pronouncement and act within the ambits of the law.

It decried the increasing insecurity in the country, occasioned by kidnapping, armed robbery and invasion of communities by killer herdsmen and called on the federal government to take urgent and definite steps to tackle these heinous crime.

It also urged the federal government to fish out the criminals, particularly the killer herdsmen that have been terrorising and unleashing mayhem on many communities with a view to bringing them to justice and compensate the victims of such brutal attacks.

CLASFON also condemned the abduction and force marriage of underage girls in some northern states, saying the nonchalant attitude of government towards such brazen abuse of the fundamental human rights of the victims, is unacceptable.

“CLASFON observes with grave concern the levity with which the government and its agencies treat the abduction of young girls in northern region of the country, where they are forced into early marriages.

“We believe this is an infringement of the fundamental human rights of the young girls, as well as a criminal offence.

“We therefore demand proper investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators of this act no matter their position in the society,” the communique said.
