Flea market photo shows ‘Billy the Kid and man who shot him’

A photo discovered by a US lawyer at a flea market may be a rare image of Wild West outlaw Billy the Kid and could be worth millions, experts have said.

Frank Abrams bought the tintype photo in North Carolina for $10 (£7) and put it up in the guest room of his home.

He consulted experts after watching a TV programme about the discovery of another photo of Billy the Kid.

Historians told Mr Abrams his photo may show the outlaw with his future killer.

Mr Abrams, a criminal defence lawyer, bought the tintype photo – which is an image produced on a thin sheet of metal – at a flea market near the city of Asheville in 2011.

Airbnb room photo

He told BBC News he decided to have it analysed by experts at the Billy the Kid museum in New Mexico after watching a programme in 2015 about a newly found photo of the gunslinger playing croquet.

The croquet photo had been valued at around $5m.

Mr Abrams came to suspect that one of the five men pictured in his tintype image was Patrick Floyd Garrett.

Garrett and Billy the Kid were said to have been close friends until Garrett became sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico.

Sheriff Garrett is remembered for gunning down the outlaw in 1881.

Mr Abrams said his photo – which is dated 2 August 1880 – hung for several years on the wall of a spare room in his home that he rented out through Airbnb.

“If I had known it was one of the most famous photos in history, I would have charged more for the room,” he laughed.

Forensic expert

Mr Abrams enlisted Robert Stahl, professor emeritus at Arizona State University, as well as several other forensic experts, to identify whether his image did indeed show Sheriff Garrett and Billy the Kid.

William Dunniway, a tintype expert, told the New York Times the photo was probably taken between 1875-80.

Mr Dunniway worked with Los Angeles forensic video expert Kent Gibson to investigate the picture.

Mr Gibson used facial recognition software to conclude it was most likely a photo of Billy the Kid and Sheriff Garrett.

A handwriting expert in Texas compared a signature from Sheriff Garrett on the photo with 10 documents that included his handwriting.

He found a match, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Although experts say the photo may be worth millions of dollars, Mr Abrams says he is no rush to sell it.

“I’ve never put a price on it,” he said in a telephone interview with BBC News.

“My interest is in the history,” he added.

The image that experts say shows Billy the Kid playing croquet was bought in 2010 for $2 from a junk shop in Fresno, California.

That tintype depicts the gunfighter in rumpled clothes and a hat, gazing at the camera and holding a Winchester rifle.

The outlaw – who was born Henry McCarty but later took the alias William Bonney – was reputedly born in New York.

He is thought to have moved to Colorado with his mother and brothers when his father died.

The gunslinger fell into a career of thievery and lawlessness and was hunted across the southern US states and northern Mexico.

He is widely thought to have killed 21 people, though some sources put the figure as high as 27.

Billy the Kid was captured and sentenced to hang for the 1878 murder of a county sheriff.

He escaped, only to be hunted down and killed by Sheriff Garrett on 14 July 1881.

Members of an El Salvadorian street gang stabbed a man 100 times, beheaded him and cut out his heart in a park near Washington DC, police say.

Up to 10 members of MS-13 communicated on walkie talkies as they closed in on their victim at a recreational area in Wheaton, Maryland, say officials.

The victim’s “heart had been excised from his chest and thrown into the grave”, according to court records.

US President Donald Trump has vowed to wipe out MS-13.

One of the suspects, 19-year-old Miguel Angel Lopez-Abrego, appeared in court on Wednesday, according to Montgomery Community Media.

He has been charged with first-degree murder and remanded in custody.

He was arrested in North Carolina on 11 November and extradited to Montgomery County, Maryland.

According to the Washington Post, the victim was murdered in early spring, but police only became aware of the killing after a tip-off.

The body was discovered in Wheaton Regional Park on 5 September.

The victim had been buried in a woodland grave prepared before his murder, officials said.

Investigators are still trying to identify the victim, but he is thought to be a Hispanic male.

A post-mortem examination ruled it a homicide from “sharp force injuries”, said police.

USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar pleads guilty to sex charges

Media captionJudge to Nassar: ‘Position of trust used to abuse children’

Former USA Olympic gymnastics sports doctor Larry Nassar has pleaded guilty to seven charges of sexual assault against women and girls in his care.

He was charged with molesting seven girls, many of whom are gymnasts, while working for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University.

As part of the plea deal, Nassar, 54, could face at least 25 years in prison.

The hearing comes after a third former US Olympian, Gabby Douglas, accused him of sexual abuse.

Douglas reveals abuse by team doctor

In a statement to the court on Wednesday, Nassar said he was pleading guilty to “move the community forward and stop the hurting”.

“I’m so sorry that this was like a match that turned into a forest fire, out of control,” he said.

“I want them to heal. I want this community to heal. I have no animosity toward any one. I just want healing. It’s time.”

“You used that position of trust that you had in the most vile way – to abuse children,” Ingham County Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said, noting that sex abuse is a nationwide “epidemic”.

“You violated the oath that you took, which is to do no harm, and you harmed them. Selfishly.”

Many of his accusers testified that they were abused while he was examining the young athletes, and sometimes while their parents were nearby.

He has been accused of abusing more than 130 women – including Olympic gold medalists Ms Douglas, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney – during his time as team doctor for the US women’s gymnastics team.

Ms Douglas, who was one of the so-called Fierce Five that won gold medals at the London Olympics in 2012, revealed her accusation on Instagram.

“I didn’t publicly share my experiences as well as many other things because for years we were conditioned to stay silent and some things were extremely painful,” she wrote.

During the hearing Ms Raisman, a member of the 2012 and 2016 Olympic teams, tweeted that she was “disgusted” that Nassar, who lost his licence, was referred to as a doctor.

Nassar’s case was part of a scandal which saw USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny resign last year. Mr Penny was accused by victims of failing to quickly notify authorities about abuse allegations.

In a statement after the plea deal was announced, USA Gymnastics – the organisation which determines the US Olympic team – said it is “very sorry that any athlete was harmed” by their former doctor.

They added that it was “important” that he acknowledged “his appalling and devious conduct” in court and said the deal “permits punishment without further victimisation of survivors”.

Nassar has already pleaded guilty to multiple charges of child pornography in federal court and could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Before accepting the plea, Judge Aquilina asked him to confirm that he did not wear gloves when abusing his victims between 1998 and 2015, when he was fired.

The alleged examinations were “not for any medical purposes is that right? It was for your own purpose, is that right?”, the judge asked. Nassar responded: “Yes.”

He is due to be sentenced on 12 January.

Oregon woman jailed after her meth-laced kiss kills inmate

Image caption A lawyer for Blair says she felt coerced by Powell to pass the drugs

An Oregon woman has been jailed after her inmate boyfriend died following a kiss the two shared to conceal the transfer of drugs into a prison.

Melissa Ann Blair kissed Anthony Powell last year to pass seven balloons filled with methamphetamine into his mouth.

Two balloons later ruptured in his stomach and he died of methamphetamine toxicity, prosecutors said.

A US judge said both Powell and Blair were to blame for the death.

“It was tragic and sad but he shares responsibility for what happened,” US District Judge Marco Hernandez said of Powell.

The 41-year-old inmate was serving a life sentence for aggravated murder in the death of his mother-in-law, who was stabbed, according to court records.

Blair, 46, was visiting her boyfriend at the Oregon State Penitentiary on 2 June 2016 when she passed the drugs.

A lawyer for Blair said she had felt coerced into the scheme even though Powell was behind bars.

“It was a very Svengali-type situation where he had total control over her life,” John Ransom said. “She had to do whatever he said.”

Judge Hernandez sentenced her to two years in federal prison on a drug conspiracy charge.

She must also complete three years of post-release supervision as well as seek drug and mental health treatment.

A friend of Powell, Brandy Pokovich, told the Associated Press news agency that she introduced him to Blair.

She said she helped Powell find girlfriends while he was incarcerated through her social media accounts.

Four other defendants in the case have pleaded guilty to drug conspiracy and are expected to be sentenced in the coming weeks.

Nigeria Woos Italian Businessmen To Invest

0
Yakubu Dogara
Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Speaker House of Reps. Nigeria
By Joseph Edegbo
Kaduna (Nigeria)–Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has urged Italian business community to take advantage of the ongoing reforms by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to invest in Nigeria.
Dogara spoke in Rome, Italy when he met with leaders of Nigerian community in Italy and some Italian businessmen at a meeting  organised by the Nigerian ambassador to Italy, Yusuf Jonga Hinna.
Dogara told the Italian business community and friends of Nigeria that the National Assembly has passed a number of laws seeking to promote ease of doing business in the country in addition to other Executive measures taken by the President.
“We passed a record number of bills within the shortest time to ease business condition in Nigeria.
“The whole environment is rife for foreign investors to exploit and the time is now.”
“There are other areas outside oil such as agriculture and tourism as we move to diversify our economy. I urge you all to tell this good news to others who are not here today that their investments are safe in Nigeria. That Nigeria is now rife for businesses to thrive. “
“This year, we have had significant inflow of a Foreign Direct Investment. The investment climate is very conductive and you have a partner in us as the legislature you can reach out to us for interventions in areas you find difficulties.”
Hon Dogara further disclosed that the government had also constituted a presidential committee on ease of doing business for which he is also a member; even though he is in the legislature.
On the security front, the Speaker assured the Italian business community that a lot of progress has been achieved in dislodging the terrorists especially in the north east.
“Insecurity was a greater concern of investors coming to Nigeria…you may have heard  that even though there are pockets of attacks by terrorists, they have been dislodged and decimated. If you are fighting an ideology it takes time to win. There has been upsurge in number of arrest and prosecutions.”
He noted that the present administration was committed to expanding opportunities for all citizens to have a decent life.
He charged Nigerians living in Italy, whom he described as “unofficial ambassadors” of Nigeria” to be law abiding and not do anything that will damage the reputation of the country saying, “ambassadors don’t bring dishonour to their country. “
“All of you Nigerians in Italy are our ambassadors. Nigerians in diaspora have done a lot back home. Some months ago we celebrated one of us who is in the USA on the floor of the House of Representatives. I enjoin you to exhibit the best of Nigeria and not the worst of us. No country is an aggregation of angels. In all countries of the world we have the good, the bad and the ugly. You are here as our best and try  to do your best and dedicate yourselves to the ideals that your home country promotes “
Speaking earlier, the Nigerian ambassador to Italy, Yusuf Jonga Hinna, commended the Speaker for providing purposeful leadership in the House of Representatives.

Is Climate Change Not The Same As Global Warming?

0
By Ogunjobi Oluwamuyiwa Felix
Is Climate Change not the same as Global Warming?
Sincerely, these two terminologies – Global Warming and Climate Change –  top the list of the most interchangeably used word by environmental scientists and journalists and it often leaves “laymen” confused whether the terms represent same or similar concepts. Now that awareness towards environmental issues is surging, it is only good that we all understand what we are dealing with. Lets go!

Global Warming or Climate Change?

Firstly, what do you think is the difference between these two terms? I wish I could hear your  response before moving on but I’ll pass…

It is forgivable if you are one of those that use these two terms interchangeably. Hey dear, even world renowned environmental scientists and journalists do the same but… they do so with understanding.

Ok, let’s cut to the chase…

Both global warming and climate change are terms first used by climate scientist ( you can call them climatologists ) to describe a phenomenon of warmth on the surface of the earth. To do justice to this, I have selected some reputable sources to help out… Are you ready?

According to climate reality…

“You can call it global warming or climate change, but it’s the biggest crisis humanity has ever faced”.

Yes! You read it correctly! Its collateral effect is evident on everything humanity is all about…

So what is climate change, global warming and what is the difference between them?

According to climatewatch magazine…

“Global warming refers only to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while

Climate change includes warming and the “side effects” of warming—like melting glaciers, heavier rainstorms, or more frequent drought. In other words, global warming is one symptom of the much larger problem of human-caused climate change”

Climate Reality put it this way…

“Global warming” applies to the long-term trend of rising average global temperatures.

“Climate change” is a broader term that reflects the fact that carbon pollution does more than just warm our planet. Carbon pollution is also changing rain and snow patterns and increasing the risk of intense storms and droughts.
Weather.com was brief about it…

Global warming refers to the rise in global average temperatures of the Earth over time and is considered human-caused.

Climate change includes warming and the impacts of warming.

If you have read carefully to this point, you would by now realize that climate change is somewhat broader than global warming.

In the 4.5 billion existence of the earth, it has always warmed and cooled, the difference this time is the rate at which the earth is warming which speaks volume about the actions of man!

Global warming is a phenomenon that arises as a result of increased earth temperature caused by increase in release of greenhouse gases by human action such as burning of fossil fuel while climate change encompasses every causes of warming, both human-caused and natural. This fairly explains why “climate change” is used more often than “global warming”.

The bottom line

Today’s global warming is an unprecedented type of climate change, and it is driving a cascade of side effects in our climate system. It’s these side effects, such as changes in sea level along heavily populated coastlines and the worldwide retreat of mountain glaciers that millions of people depend on for drinking water and agriculture, that are likely to have a much greater impact on society than temperature change alone.

So, what role do we play in all of this?

We shouldn’t be gullible to think climate change is a hoax, far from it!

Picture a very wealthy man who decided to kill the hen that lays the golden egg… OR a thirsty little boy in a desert who eventually found a a shallow put of water. He gulped enough and polluted the rest. If adequate understanding of our environment is lost on us, abuse will definitely linger. Despite my passion towards promoting awareness of environmental issues, one major challenge I have faced is defining what role I can play in alleviating the problem and helping others define theirs. But not anymore, there are various things we can do to curb climate change as individuals; it only requires that we raise our consciousness of how we treat the environment.

234 Killed In Third Quarter Of 2017 In Ashanti Region

0

At least  234 people died in road accidents in the Ashanti Region between January and October, 2017.

Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, Samuel Asiamah  says most of  the  tragedies were caused by tricycles, motorbikes and private cars.

Accidents involving commercial vehicles however dropped over the period compared to last year’s figures.

Mr. Asiamah attributed the development to intensified road safety education, especially, for tro-tro divers.

Meanwhile, a non-governmental road safety organization, Oli Best Road, is taking up the challenge to sensitize tricycle, motor bike riders and private car drivers, respectively.

Chief Executive, Richard Karikari says  the target is to reduce accidents by 50 percent by the year 2020 in the Ashanti region.

They are engaging stakeholders such as National Road Safety Commission, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Highways Authority and Ghana National Fire Service to reach their target.

Manhyia Divisional Police Commander, ACP Kwaku Boah, blames the current trend of accidents on drug and alcohol abuse.

According to him, some drivers have  resorted  to the use of India Hemp and locally brewed wine ‘akpeteshie’  and  Tramol which affect their judgement whilst driving.
