At least 31 Palestinians have been wounded in clashes in the Gaza Strip and across the occupied West Bank, during protests against US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

One person is in a critical condition.

Mr Trump’s announcement – met with worldwide dismay – reversed decades of US policy on the sensitive issue.

Israel deployed hundreds of extra troops in the West Bank as Palestinians went on strike and took to the streets.

Protesters set tyres alight and threw stones, and Israeli troops fired tear gas, rubber bullets and live bullets.

Two rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israel but fell short, Israel’s army said.

In Gaza, according to Reuters news agency, Palestinians threw stones across the border fence at Israeli soldiers who responded with live fire.

Many of Washington’s closest allies have said they disagree with the move, and both the UN Security Council and the Arab League will meet in the coming days to decide their response.

There are fears the announcement could lead to a renewed outbreak of violence. The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas has already called for a new intifada, or uprising.

Why did Trump reverse US policy?

The US president said on Wednesday that he had “determined it is time to officially recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel”.

“I’ve judged this course of action to be in the best interests of the United States of America and the pursuit of peace between Israel and the Palestinians,” he said.

He said he was directing the US state department to begin preparations to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Media captionAnalysis: Breaking down what Mr Trump said and what it means for peace

Despite warnings of regional unrest over any such move, the decision fulfils a campaign promise and appeals to Mr Trump’s right-wing base.

Recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital was “nothing more or less than a recognition of reality”, he added. “It is also the right thing to do.”

Mr Trump said the US would support a two-state solution – shorthand for a final settlement that would see the creation of an independent Palestinian state within pre-1967 ceasefire lines in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, living peacefully alongside Israel – “if agreed to by both sides”.

The president also refrained from using Israel’s description of Jerusalem as its “eternal and undivided capital”. The Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of any future Palestinian state.

What has been the reaction?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was profoundly grateful to Mr Trump, who had “bound himself forever with the history of the capital”.

He also said Israel was “in touch with other countries to follow suit. I have no doubt other embassies will move to Jerusalem – the time has come”. He did not name any of these countries, although the Philippines and the Czech Republic have been mentioned in Israeli media.

The mood has been very different on the Palestinian side.

The leader of Hamas, which dominates the Gaza Strip, has called for a “day of rage” on Friday and said it should “be the first day of the intifada against the occupier”.

“We have given instructions to all Hamas members and to all its wings to be fully ready for any new instructions or orders that may be given to confront this strategic danger,” Ismail Haniya said in a speech in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ rival Fatah movement is seeking to protest through diplomatic means, by filing a complaint to the UN Security Council and pushing for a strong stance by the Arab League.

“We are going to declare the United States disqualified as co-sponsor of any peace process or political process,” spokesman Dr Nasser Al-Kidwa said. “In our mind, it has lost its ability to do or perform any efforts in this regard.”

There has also been widespread condemnation across the Arab and wider Muslim world, with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warning Mr Trump that he was “throwing the region into a ring of fire”.

The leaders of the UK, France and Europe have all said they disagree with the US announcement. French President Emmanuel Macron said it contravened international law and UN Security Council resolutions.

The EU’s top diplomat, Federica Mogherini, said the move had “the potential to send us backwards to even darker times than the ones we are already living in”.

Why is the announcement significant?

Jerusalem is of huge importance to both Israel and the Palestinians. It contains sites sacred to the three major monotheistic faiths – Judaism, Islam and Christianity.

Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem has never been recognised internationally, and all countries maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv.

East Jerusalem, which includes the Old City, was annexed by Israel after the Six Day War of 1967, but before now it has not been internationally recognised as part of Israel.

According to the 1993 Israel-Palestinian peace accords, the final status of Jerusalem is meant to be discussed in the latter stages of peace talks.

Kaduna (Nigeria)–The head office of the Leadership Newspapers located in Utako, Abuja Nigeria’s Federal capital is under siege by security operatives over alleged 100 million Naira debt.

The operatives working under a court order has been mandated to shut down the office and claim all Leadership property including all vehicles found within the premises belonging to the Newspapers.

Already, about six vehicles have been towed away by the assigned officers.

Security operatives prior to the raid of the office, according to sources, had equally carted away important equipment.

A Plaintiff had about 7 years ago approached the court over a libellous publication against the newspapers where he won the case and was awarded 100 million Naira.

The sources said that the official vehicle of the General Editor has equally been towed away by the operatives.

Staff of the Newspapers, the souces added, are being owed more than 20 months salaries.

However, the editorial staff were recently paid quarter salary, after several months of no renumeration.

”You heard about the disclaimer on Duro Hassan. This is the same guy that brought in over N130m for 400 pages of adverts. Simply because he removed N6million commission and another N2million of his salary, the Publisher dragged him to the police, and lost.

Because he lost, he ordered that continuous publication of disclaimers on him. This is sad,” the source lamented . Another source said that he is being owed 3 million Naira salaries.

99% of the advert money, according to the source ,was allegedly milked from the  Kogi State government which in the first history of this country, published names of the entire state workforce who are also being owed salaries for several months.

SureRemit Launches Cryptocurrency For Global Non-Cash Remittances: Brings Succour To 250 Million Immigrants Worldwide

0

By Joseph Edegbo

Kaduna (Nigeria)–SureRemit, a global blockchain-based non-cash remittance service has announced a token sale event to allow investors to contribute to SureRemit and receive RMT tokens at a 40 % bonus.

A big argument for the potential of blockchain and cryptocurrencies has been about how the revolutionary technology can impact the $600bn cross-border remittance market.

Several platforms are already enabling cheaper and faster transfer of money using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin; however, a new product, SureRemit, is focusing on a particular segment: non-cash remittances.

There are over 250 million immigrants across the world. A significant volume of money sent by these immigrants is intended to serve specific needs of their friends and family at home like food, clothing, utility bills and education.

Senders utilize a myriad of formal and informal channels to move money, but while there have been improvements in recent years, the international money transfer process is far from convenient.

Cash transfers are heavily regulated in order to prevent money laundering, fraud and terrorist financing, so the systems and intermediaries involved are forced to create elaborate compliance processes that result in high fees and less-than-ideal transaction flows.

Furthermore, after sending money home, immigrants have no control or visibility over the use of funds.

A new blockchain-based remittance service is being created to address this.

Immigrants all over the world with Remit tokens can purchase digital vouchers that are redeemable for goods and services directly from local merchants at their specified destinations.

This cryptocurrency removes the cash layer, reduces the cost of transfers and provides the sender some control and visibility over how the value is spent.

“International remittance transactions can be frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be, at least for non-cash value transfers which constitute about 40% of all transfers” said ‘Laolu Samuel-Biyi, Director of Remittances at SureRemit. “In very many cases, immigrants andtravelers just want to buy food or pay a bill for someone at home. Those transactions do not have the same risk profiles as cash transactions, and they should not be subjected to the same costs, timelines and procedures.

Remit tokens are being issued in partnership with Stellar. The tokens generated will be the primary tool for accessing digital shopping vouchers, utility bill payments and mobile airtime services within the SureRemit app. SureRemit already has access to over 500 redemption points of major retail chains within the SureGifts merchant ecosystem across Africa, with partnerships to acquire thousands of ecosystem merchant partners in India and the Middle-East in the works. Expansion into other major remittance corridors are planned for next year.

Residents of Los Angeles’ wealthy Bel-Air neighbourhood have found their homes under threat after another wildfire erupted in California.

The so-called Skirball Fire destroyed several homes in the exclusive area, quickly spreading over 150 acres.

It is the latest eruption of wildfire in the state, which has already seen widespread destruction from a series of uncontrolled blazes.

The largest, named the Thomas Fire, has covered some 90,000 acres.

By Wednesday night local time, California’s fire service said it had threatened 12,000 buildings, destroyed 150, and was only “5% contained”.

Mandatory evacuation orders remained in several areas, as strong winds helped to spread the flames.

Authorities issued a purple alert – the highest level warning ever issued in the state – amid what it called “extremely critical fire weather”.

Ken Pimlott, head of California’s fire response, told reporters: “There will be no ability to fight fires in this kind of wind.”

He said evacuations would be prioritised.

The nearby University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) cancelled all classes on Thursday, despite the university campus lying outside the evacuation zone on the city’s west side. It said it had taken the decision “given the array of uncertainties”.

Many schools have also been closed.

In Bel-Air on Wednesday, firefighters were seen removing artwork from opulent homes as they attempted to contain the fire.

The neighbourhood is home to celebrities and business leaders including Beyoncé and Elon Musk.

Singer Lionel Richie cancelled a Las Vegas performance that had been scheduled for Wednesday evening, saying he was “helping family evacuate to a safer place”.

A large estate and vineyard owned by billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch was also threatened, and suffered some damage.

The Los Angeles Times said Mr Murdoch had paid $28.8m (£21.5m) for the estate four years ago – a sum 12 times the average family home price in Bel-Air of $2.45m.

The Getty Museum, which is also at risk, said it would remain closed on Thursday. It said it had not removed its artworks and that air filtration systems were protecting its collection – which includes pieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Van Gogh and Turner – from smoke damage.

The Thomas Fire in Ventura County remains the largest of the current blazes, having spread as far as the Pacific coast, with satellite images showing large areas of scorched earth.

Another blaze north of Los Angeles, named the Creek Fire, was also only 5% contained and covered some 12,600 acres. But it has only destroyed four buildings in the more sparsely populated area.

Across the entire state, more than 200,000 people have been evacuated.

One LA resident, 84-year-old Patricia Moore, was loading her belongings into her car when she told the AFP news agency: “Yesterday it was further north, but this morning we woke up and it was east of us.

“We heard the fire engines before six o’clock this morning, and we said, ‘Maybe we should start getting our stuff into the car.'”

Gombe (Nigeria)–Gombe state  government, northeast of the country has launched the Action Plan on United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, HeforShe Campaign and Peace Architecture in the State.

It is aimed at minimizing the hardships, difficulties and atrocities women go through during conflicts and disasters.

Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo represented by his Special Adviser, Dudu Manuga, said at the occasion that the Action Plan would create the much-needed opportunity for women protection and participation not only in governance but in all facets of our human endeavor

“Gombe state shall continue to align our administration policy thrust with world best practice by ensuring that women are not only protected against insecurity but have access to effective participation in peace negotiation, humanitarian planning, post-conflict peace building and governance.

Also speaking the Deputy Programme Manager Women Peace Security UN-Women, Peter Mancha, said that globally, over 1.1 million men have joined the HeForShe movement which begins online with a simple affirmation that gender equality is not only a women’s issues, but also a human right issue that requires everyone’s participation and commitment to achieve.

“HeForShe is a solidarity movement which aims to engage at 1 billion men and boys on the topic of gender equality. HeForShe is also a critical part of our efforts to promote gender equality in line with the sustainable Development Goals, which include a commitment to end discrimination and inequality, access to justice, and participation in political and economic life on the basis of gender by 2030.

“In Nigeria Gombe State inclusive, the picture appears even starker, as women comprise under 6 percent of the membership of the legislature. Among the 70 percent of the estimated people living below the poverty line in Nigeria, over 65 percent are women and even as we acknowledge the enormity of the present challenges we have many examples of bold and positive experiences and commitments by men to advance gender equality right here in Nigeria. It is these positive stories that the HeForShe movement seeks to build on”, he said.

Mancha said that one illustration was drawn from UN-Women’s own work, with funding support from European Union to promote women’s engagement in peace and security processes in Adamawa, Plateau and Gombe States, where government and traditional leaders have taken bold steps  to increase the representation of women in decision-making.

He added that in Adamawa state for instance, 49 women have been appointed as advisors to the paramount Ruler of Bachama Kingdom in Numan local government Area, and District Head of Doho in Gombe State appointed 57 women as members of his Traditional Council and Advisors,

The Deputy Programme Manager said that Mai of Kaltungo Chiefdom, Sala Mohammad has engaged over 40 women as Advisers in his Traditional Council. Plateau State has also seen the appointment of 95 women as advisers to Traditional Councils and Community Leaders in some local government areas

Kaduna (Nigeria)–The Unified Nigeria Youth Forum, UNYF, has condemned in strong terms campaigns  for the scraping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, of the Nigeria Police Force.

Abdulsalam Mohammed Kazeem, UNYF President, in a statement made available to newsmen in Kaduna, northern Nigeria Wednesday, said, “Those calling for the abolishment of SARS should book a date with history and have a critical look inward on the role Special Anti-robbery Squad is playing in reducing crime rate to the bearest minimum nationwide.

“No security agency in Nigeria today that is 100% perfect, and as such, we must bear with them on their short comings, the problem of their imperfection can be attributed to bad training and selection process.

“There is also the problem of training and re-training of personnel, lack of adequate man-power, lack of adequate logistic and better welfare package for its personnel.

https://www.africaprimenews.com/2017/12/05/crime/nigerian-police-re-organizes-its-special-anti-robbery-squad/

“The Unified Nigerian Youth Forum calls on all progressive minded citizens and Civil Society Organizations to rather pressurize the present administration to either sack all security chiefs or give them ultimatum on when to bring all these security challenges to a logical conclusion.

“It is on record that in the past administration under President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, we were confronted with severe bombing under the coordination of Boko Haram. Today the country under the leadership of General Mohammadu Buhari of all Progressive Congress, APC, is witnessing sporadic cases of continuous kidnappings of innocent citizens and herdsmen attacking communities with the sole aim of destroying lives and properties in Adamawa, Benue, Plateau, Taraba, Kaduna and Nassarawa States.

“What have the securities chiefs done to curb these series of security threat to our national unity? Population must never be seen or use as an excuse for their inability to protect the lives and properties of their citizenry.

“Holistically, what we need as a nation is a complete restructuring of our security system and as a forum, we appeal to all Nigerians to join our campaign for the agitation of a vibrant and viable security system that can find a lasting solution to the present security challenges we find ourselves as a nation not calling for the scraping of the Special Anti-robbery Squared, SARS.”it argued.

Nigeria’s House of Representatives Given a Pat On the Back

By Joseph Edegbo

Kaduna-(Nigeria)–Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has acknowledged the commitment of members of the Eight House of Representatives who have passed a record number of bills and motions.

Dogara, stated that the achievement was made possible through the contributions and cooperation of all members of the House, and thanked them for their unwavering support for his leadership.

Receiving the New Telegraph Newspapers’ Award for Public Service in 2017, which had been collected on his behalf by the House Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Speaker noted that Nigerians will celebrate the 8th Assembly after the expiration of their tenure in 2019 as more bills would be passed in 2018.

“Let me first of all thank my brother here for standing in for me while I was unavoidably absent, but as they say for a good cause. I was away in Rome and it was a good thing that he stood in for me. Knowing that he is the Leader of the House, I felt that he is the most appropriate person to do that, because when you’re talking of effective leadership in the Public Service, there’s no way it can be provided without the support of others, especially when it comes to the business of the National Assembly.”

“We all know that unlike the Executive where not all are elected into leadership, in Parliament, you didn’t bring anyone into the House, so there’s always that parity. I want to say in recognizing that the House of Representatives has been effective and item has been on account of the contribution of all of us, all Honourable Members, and as I am accepting this award, I do it on behalf of all Honourable Members.”

“I know they may have sieved through the records and seen that some of the best achievements of the House have been as a result of some of the things in the custody of the Leader. Things like the record number of Motions and Bills, these are unparalleled in the history of the Nigerian Legislature. Even today we did something very novel, it is our first time even in this Assembly, and it was under the auspices of the leadership and the Leader of the House.”

The Speaker also revealed that the House will continue to celebrate Nigerians who excell in various spheres of human life saying, “we have broken the glass ceiling in different areas of calling. We made a promise that any Nigerian that excels or sets a good record, the National Assembly – in particular, the House of Representatives – will celebrate that person. Today we celebrated 2 young people who have lived and set records in their fields and they are living testimonies to the Nigerian youth that whatever is their dream, it is achievable, and I pray that – as I said in the Chambers today – the recognition given to them on the floor of the House will spur them to greater achievements in life”, he said, referring to Aarinola Olaiya Blessing and Abdulsalam Kamaldeen, who were honoured for exceptional academic excellence during Tuesday’s sitting.

The Speaker further called on legislators to sustain their efforts and congratulated other 2017 NEW TELEGRAPH NEWSPAPER awardees.

Gbajabiamila, on his part, said being chosen to represent the Speaker was an honour and that the award had made all Members extremely proud.

“The specific award was public service award 2017. It was a very worthy, meaningful award. It takes a certain character to excel in public service in Nigeria and amongst all the public servants in Nigeria, you were chosen as the numero uno. For us in the House of Representatives, we are extremely elated and proud of you and your achievement.”
