Gombe (Nigeria) – Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Gombe, northeast of the country has expressed delight at Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka’s prediction on Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo of  becoming Nigeria’s President come 2019.

The state chairman of the Association, Reverend Ibrahim Jodi, who gave the nod while speaking at Government House Gombe on Saturday, condemned the doubting Thomases.

Jodi said as believers in the word, they have accepted and rejoiced with Mbaka’s prediction, adding that only those who did not know the value of an anointed man of God” could denounce the prediction as false.

“God revealed His message for the federal government to Reverend Mbaka that incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari would not be re-elected in 2019 and that you (Dankwambo) are better suited to take over from him.

“Now we are reading this report of ‘someone’ who has the effrontery to denounce the message of God as conveyed by the pastor, someone that is neither a cleric or knows the value of the anointed man of God.

“We will pray earnestly against people like that who do not mean well for Gombe State,” he said.

Rev Fr. Mbaka who predicted President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in 2015 recently endorsed Dankwambo for President in 2019. The preacher also claimed that the Lord has told him to advice Buhari not to seek a second term.

“If Mr. President, Buhari will not continue, if you go to Gombe, it was a rural state, the present Governor there, Ibrahim Hassan, has turned that place into almost an ultra-modern city and that man was a former accountant general of the country. If you go to Gombe, you won’t know Gombe again; why can’t such a person come out; I don’t know the party he is in; and he is still a young man; in his early 50s, whether in PDP or APC I don’t know but whoever is doing that kind of magic in Gombe can handle Nigeria. A man who did PhD in accountancy, chartered in marketing, chartered in accountancy, a lot of things, a guru, we need somebody with such aura.

“And the Gombe people will tell you, he does not discriminate between Muslims and Christians, he is shielding even Christians there. Some pastors he gave them land, gave land for churches. I am not campaigning for him, but I am talking about somebody who can lead us forward, somebody with vision, with agenda, to change Nigeria is not difficult; wherever such a person is, let his party make him available for Nigerians to see it.

However, in a widely circulated opinion article recently published in the media, one of those doubting the prediction  Mohammed Jibrin Barde denounced Mbaka’s revelation on Dankwambo as “way off the mark” as well as a “fantasy”.

Abuja (Nigeria) – The Minister of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Muhammad Musa Bello has eulogised the outgoing President of the FCT Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Moses Bello, for the way he piloted the affairs of the apex customary court during his 26 years at the helm.

The Minister made the commendation  in a tribute to Justice Moses Bello at a  valedictory session held in his honour in Abuja, the nation’s capital

The Minister who was represented by the FCT Permanent Secretary, Mr. Chinyeaka Ohaa, stated, “in the 26 years of your presidency of this court you left indelible footprints in the judicial sands of time. Like a guiding light, all customary law practitioners would ever look at your wise judicial pronouncements as beacons as they navigate the waters of customary law and jurisprudence.”

FCT Customary Court of Appeal, the Minister noted, was established as a Superior Court of Record pursuant to Decree No. 30 of 1991 and enshrined in Section 265, Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended.

According to Musa Bello, the Court was charged with the mandate to exercise appellate and supervisory jurisdiction over issues of Customary law and Chieftaincy matters which were discharged  creditably.

The retiring Justice, he added, contributed greatly towards making the FCT Administration’s legal institution to be what it is today.

The Minister recalled that  Justice Bello, was a staff of the FCT Administration from  1981 – 85 and that during the period, the retiring  Justice  was  a legal officer and  also acted as Head of Department of Legal Services

The Minister pledged to extend the same hand of fellowship and good working relations that existed between FCTA and the outgoing president to the next leadership of the Court.

In his remarks, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Malam Abubakar Malami described the celebrant as a man who has impacted the country in a profound manner.

He therefore, called on lawyers, judges and justices to use the occasion to reflect on the life and wide range of experience of the retiring justice to the country’s jurisprudence.

He said: “This is a worthy celebrant. The celebrant has touched the country in a profound manner. His biography is that of hard work, team work and dedication”.

Responding, the retiring Justice, disclosed that one of his greatest achievements was the passage into law by the National Assembly of the Customary Court of Appeal of the FCT, jurisdiction on Chieftaincy matters which gave the FCT Customary Court of Appeal sole jurisdiction to hear and determine chieftaincy matters in the Territory.

Justice Bello explained that during his tenure as the helmsman of the Customary Court of Appeal, he contributed his best to the growth and development of the Court and also ensured that people at the grassroots in the FCT got required services.

His words: “In the years I have served as President of the Customary Court of Appeal, I make bold to say I contributed my modest efforts towards the growth and development of the Court and ultimately in bringing the services of the Court closer to those who needed it the most, the rural dwellers of the FCT.”

Thousands of people attended the first AfroPunk festival to be held on the continent. The celebration of alternative black culture was held in the South African city of Johannesburg recently.

The festival describes itself as “a blank space to freak out in, to construct a new reality, to live your life as you see fit, while making sense of the world around you”.

For years the festival has been a space for Africans in the diaspora to explore their heritage. So some described its first appearance in Africa as a homecoming.

AfroPunk was first held in New York in 2005, and was started by people who felt marginalised by both mainstream black and pop cultures. They drew heavily on the rebellious spirit of punk.

It has since become a global movement, and has been held in Atlanta, Paris and London.

The festival celebrates music and culture “born of African spirit”, as well as alternative music and fashion. It has become synonymous with eclectic, experimental outfits and style.

There was some controversy on the first day after South African DJ Cleo pulled out, claiming local artists were not being treated with the same respect as international ones. But that didn’t seem to stop music-lovers dancing to both legendary old and popular new South African musicians, including Kwaito star Thebe, below. Kwaito music developed in South Africa in the early 1990s.

International artists, including British performer Laura Mvula, below, and American Anderson .Paak kept festival-goers entertained on day two. US star Solange was meant to be the headline act but she cancelled due to sickness. Some say the AfroPunk movement has become a victim of its own popularity, and has become mainstream.

Pride in black hair, beauty and fashion were all on display, in keeping with the themes of the festival.

The festival also champions inclusion of people of all backgrounds, ethnicities and sexual orientations. Screens flashing the messages rejecting ableism, sexism, homophobia and racism were on display throughout the festival.

Art was also created – Gloria Shoki, below, urged others to join her painting a graffiti mural.

Casamance: Thirteen dead in attack in restive Senegalese region

Thirteen people have been killed in an attack in the restive southern Senegalese region of Casamance.

Hospital workers who have seen the bodies said some of the victims had been shot, others decapitated. The dead are said to be teenagers.

It is not clear yet who carried out the attack.

Casamance has seen a long-running conflict between the government and the MFDC rebel group, which wants independence. Thousands have died.

The Senegalese military said the attack may be connected to the recent release from custody of two MFDC members.

Local media suggested the youths were attacked by a group hostile to the MFDC while collecting wood.

Once home to a thriving tourist industry, Casamance is separated from the Senegalese capital, Dakar, by The Gambia.

It is home to numerous ethnic groups, including many Christians, while northern areas are dominated by three, largely Muslim communities.

Violence has largely waned since a 2014 ceasefire agreed between the government and rebels.

Migrants drown as dinghy sinks off Libya coast

Image caption Thousands of migrants were rescued from the Mediterranean in 2017

At least eight migrants have drowned and 84 have been rescued after a rubber dinghy sank off the coast of Libya, the Italian coastguard said.

Dozens of others might still be missing, the Spanish rescue charity Proactiva Open Arms said.

It is believed to be the first sinking of a migrant boat in the Mediterranean in 2018.

The sea crossing to Europe is the deadliest route in the world for migrants, the UN says.

Nearly 34,000 migrants have drowned or gone missing in the waters since 2000, according to figures from the International Organization for Migration.

The German charity Sea-Watch said at least 25 people had died but numbers were still unclear. One of its boats was on the way to the scene north of Tripoli, it added.

Proactiva Open Arms said many of those rescued had spent hours in the water.

The coastguard said the partly submerged dinghy was spotted by a surveillance aircraft engaged in the EU’s Operation Sophia, which aims to intercept boats engaged in people smuggling.

“The search continues for survivors,” it added.

In 2017 nearly 3,000 migrants were believed to have drowned while trying to cross the Mediterranean.

On Friday, the EU’s border management agency, Frontex, said the numbers of migrants travelling to Europe illegally last year dropped 60% to 204,300.

The numbers travelling to Italy was 119,000 – 34% fewer than 2016, Frontex said.

The drop was due to improved border controls, the agency added.

The EU saw record levels of asylum seekers arriving in 2016 but the numbers have fallen since a deal with Turkey stemmed the influx of those crossing into Greece.

A note on terminology: The BBC uses the term migrant to refer to all people on the move who have yet to complete the legal process of claiming asylum. This group includes people fleeing war-torn countries such as Syria, who are likely to be granted refugee status, as well as people who are seeking jobs and better lives, who governments are likely to rule are economic migrants.

Law Maker Urges Wealthy Nigerians To Create Employment Opportunities

By Peter Usman

Abuja (Nigeria) – To complement government obligations in job creation, a member of the National Assembly, Sergius Ose Ogun has urged wealthy Nigerians including the political class to create jobs for the teeming unemployed youths roaming the street .

The lawmaker represents Esan North and South East Federal Constituency of Edo State, South – South of the country.

In an interview with AFRICA PRIME NEWS at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, Ogun observed that creating jobs for the youths, especially in the rural areas, would discourage rural-urban drift .

Ose Ogun asserted that there is an urgent need to industrialize the rural areas across the country so that, youths after finishing school , could equally remain and work in the rural areas and live a comfortable life.

The law maker also spoke of the need to carry everybody along in one way or the other through job creation so as to reduce poverty in the rural areas, adding that if people are engaged in doing something, the issue of agitation here and there would be reduced.

“I use to say this that Government cannot do it alone, we need to intervene in this matter, if government come to meet you in the midway, all well and good. We have left so many people behind in this country and that is why we are having some of these agitations”, he said.

Ose Ogun who applauded the present Assembly for excellent performance, said that it has broken records, except that they have some challenges in the area of delivering constituency projects due to lack of fund to implement the budget.

“Now, 2016 budget was partially executed and as I am talking to you now, we have projects in my constituency that were of 2016 and nothing has been done about it. In 2017; there was no intervention fund for me to deliver to my constituency”.

The lawmaker, however disclosed that his 2016 intervention project was agriculture, which he said , 200 youths from his constituency have been engaged on 100 hectares of land saying that they are presently doing wonderfully well.

“As I speak to you now, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture is doing feeder road to that farm and by the grace of God, we will make solar light available to that farm. We are also trying to engage another 210 youths on fish farming and we are looking at 100 hectares of land to execute that”

Ogun, who enumerated some of the projects in his constituency, revealed that he has been providing medical assistance to the people with various health challenges using medical outreach in Utako and Ugboha villages free, saying he has been doing this consistently for over 5 years.

“My constituency has the highest number of people going to Libya, even my state in particular. So my dream is to stem that. But if you tell them not to go, what will be the alternative for them? You have to engage them back home and that is why I am throwing all these and by the grace of God, we are achieving positive results” he said.

John Young, US astronaut and pioneer, dies aged 87

US astronaut John Young, who flew to the moon twice and commanded the first ever space shuttle mission, has died aged 87, Nasa said.

“Today, Nasa and the world have lost a pioneer,” agency chief Robert Lightfoot said in a statement.

Young was the only person to have flown missions on the Gemini, Apollo and space shuttle programmes.

He also once famously smuggled a corned beef sandwich on to a space flight as a gift for a fellow astronaut.

Young retired in 2004 after a 42-year career. Nasa said he died on Friday following complications from pneumonia.

“John was one of that group of early space pioneers whose bravery and commitment sparked our nation’s first great achievements in space,” Mr Lightfoot said.

“But, not content with that, his hands-on contributions continued long after the last of his six space flights – a world record at the time of his retirement from the cockpit.”

Born in San Francisco in 1930, Young gained a degree in aeronautical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and then served in the US Navy as a test pilot.

He was picked as a Nasa astronaut in 1962 and first went into space in 1965 with the Gemini 3 mission.

It was while orbiting the Earth that he handed the smuggled sandwich to his colleague, Gus Grissom. Nasa later rebuked him for the stunt.

In May 1969 Young was part of the Apollo 10 mission that flew to the moon as a rehearsal for the Apollo 11 landing two months later. The crew tested the lander module in lunar orbit without landing it.

Young finally walked on the moon himself in 1972 as commander of the Apollo 16 mission – the ninth of 12 people to have ever set foot on the lunar surface.

He and crewmate Charles Duke gathered rock and soil samples and drove the lunar rover more than 16 miles (26km).

Image caption Young, centre, took part in the Apollo 10 mission

In an interview with the Houston Chronicle in 2004, Young recalled: “One-sixth gravity on the surface of the moon is just delightful. It’s not like being in zero gravity, you know. You can drop a pencil in zero gravity and look for it for three days. In one-sixth gravity, you just look down and there it is.”

In 1981, Young commanded the inaugural flight of Nasa’s first space shuttle, Columbia. Two years later he became the first person to fly six space missions when he commanded Columbia on the first Spacelab mission.

It was his last journey into space. Young had been due to command a space shuttle flight in 1986 but it was cancelled after the explosion of the shuttle Challenger earlier that year.
