The Coalition made the call in a statement signed by the chairman, Ahmed Shehu and Director Publicity, Sadiq Sadiq shortly after its Mid-year Congress in Bauchi, Northeast of the country.

The coalition says it observes with dismay what it called the diminishing free and fair  investigative journalism being practised by some media Houses in the country

“We enjoined media practitioners to respect ethical standards in the discharge of their responsibilities, any media that fails to be responsible and reporting correct news, relevant regulating agencies should take action against such media organization.”

“As we approach 2019 election we called on government, politicians, and security agencies to discharge their duties fairly and in conformity took the constitution of the country.

“We believe in unity and existence of Nigeria as one indivisible country and we advised government and relevant agencies to sanction or bring to justice any individual or group that was identified beyond reasonable doubt to be involved in the divide.

The coalition also called on the citizens, politicians, religious, traditional and communities leaders not to over heat the polity that could cause division across the country, “it  emphasised that all citizens have the right and liberty to live in any part of the country, irrespective of tribal  and religious affiliations as enshrined in the constitution”.

Zonal Campaign Coordinator to Gov. El – Rufai in the 2015 general elections, Jaafaru Abbass-Ibrahim has withdrawn his membership of the ruling All Progresives Congress (APC).

A letter to this effect to which copies were made available to newsmen in Kaduna, Northwest Nigeria, Abbas-Ibrahim described APC as a sinking ship in the state and that remaining in the party would equal to committing political suicide.

Abbas-Ibrahim who was appointed by the present administration as the Interim Management Committee Chairman of Zaria local government area from June 2015 – December 2015 said one of his reasons for withdrawing his membership from the ruling party among several others, according to him, was because the present government under the leadership of Governor el-Rufai has jettisoned and abandoned the party manifesto and set a new personal goals and objectives detrimental to the future of the party.

“Recent developments before, during and after the party Congresses in Kaduna State are further confirmation of our fears that some of us are not wanted in the party, such that our continuous stay and in-house struggles and skirmishes had not only stagnated but rendered the party comatose due to the fact that the worst elements, crooks, swindlers as well as the most selfish have taken control of both the party and the government making the furture of the APC uncertain.

“the state is mired in violence and people are being killed on a daily basis, criminality, rural banditry, cyclical atrocities between political classes, kidnapping and robbery are taking their toll on the lives and livelihood of citizens of the state rendering the constitutional provisions that the Governor as the chief security officer should provide for the security and welfare of the people an empty rhetoric.

“Moreover, the Governor has woefuly failed to address problems such as unemployment, abject poverty, hunger and housing and deliver on its promises as contained in its abandoned manifesto.

“The Kaduna State Government had since lost focus, commitment, zeal, determination, culminating in poor governance as a result of transparency, integrity, due process and accountability deficit. Our continued advise both privately and publicly for an improvement on both party administration and the state has been met with stiff opposition over which we have been called names in vituperative and unprintable languages.

“In view of the above therefore,it is obvious that APC in Kaduna state in particular is like a sinking ship, hence every discernable mind has to scamper into safety as in this circumstances. I am not ready to commit political suicide hence it is with greatest regret that I have formally announced  the withdrawal of membership from the party which we laboured to establish forthwith” he stated.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission, a UN International Food Standards-Setting Body, is set to release new guidelines on food labelling to provide simplified nutritional information to consumers to enable them make healthier food choices.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on its Twitter Handle @WHO said on Wednesday that developing this guidance was very important as it would stop increased incidence of obesity and some non-communicable diseases.

WHO said that the commission has also revised the general standard for labelling of repackaged foods and improving date marking and storage instructions.

It said that date marking whether indicating date of manufacture, packaging, best before, use by or expiration, should provide reliable information to consumers.

WHO said that it should also ensure food safety and prevent food waste.

It assured however that the commission was working to ensure that it avoided creating unnecessary obstacles to the food trade while developing and implementing the new standards.

“The commission agreed to undertake new work to develop a guidance on providing simplified nutrition information to consumers to enable them identify healthier food choices while avoiding creating unnecessary obstacles to the food trade.

“Food labelling bearing this information is an important tool to help stop the increased incidence of obesity and some chronic non-communicable diseases.

“These are part of the new International Food Safety Standards protecting consumer health and ensuring fair practices in trade,” it said.

WHO said the commission has also set new limits for contamination of the naturally occurring contaminant found in chocolate to protect consumers against high exposure to cadmium.

It said that cocoa beans used in the production of chocolate could take up high levels of cadmium from the soil and water, stating that this contaminant could remain in the human body for a long time.

According to WHO, higher intake of cadmium is linked to kidney damage, while limiting cadmium levels in chocolate can ensure exposure to the contaminant is not too high.

It said that to protect against high exposures of lead, the commission has also set new limits for contamination of heavy metal found in food as it was detrimental to human health.

“To protect against high exposures of mercury, the commission has set new limits for methylmercury found in fish. Fish that live for a long time and are higher in the food chain have raised levels of methylmercury in their bodies.

“Mercury can have toxic effects on the nervous, digestive and immune system of humans and on lungs, kidney, skin and eyes.

“To reduce exposure to methylmercury, the commission set limits for several fish species ranging from 1.2 to 1.7 mg per kilogram of fish.

“This includes no more than 1.2 mg of methylmercury per kilogram of Tuna, 1.5mg per kilogram of Alfonsino, 1.7mg per kilogram of Marlin and 1mg per kilogram of Shark.”

The commission is an intergovernmental body with over 180 members within the framework of the Joint Food Standards Programme established by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the UN.

The commission was set up to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade.

Its primary responsibility is also to promote coordination of all food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organisations.

The commission works to provide guidance on general labelling of foods and the health or nutritional claims producers make on labels.

It ensures that consumers understand what they are buying and that it is what it says it is. (NAN)
