As the quarter-final matches of the ongoing World Cup kick off on Friday at the different venues in Russia, concerned football fans and neutrals would be guaranteed nothing, but spectacular football.

If the Round of 16 matches were action-packed, the expected brilliance from the upcoming quarter-final pairings would without any iota of a doubt, provide fans with performances that will keep them at the edge of their seats.

Uruguay vs France

The showdown between Les Bleus of France, winners of the 1998 FIFA which they hosted — and La Celeste Olímpica of Uruguay, winners of the 1930 and 1950 editions of the World Cup  — will set the ball rolling.

Coach Didier Deschamps of France and Oscar Tabarez of Uruguay would have to go the extra mile to coax the best out of their players in the win-or-be-eliminated match that would certainly guarantee the winner a place in the semi-finals.

Uruguay’s approach in their opening match against Egypt was more on the negative side because of their ultra-defensive approach, but the South Americans have gradually shown their true colours.

France have been more dynamic, but showed vulnerability as they seemed to lack ideas on how to breakdown Denmark, after the Scandinavian country tightened their defence in the final group game which ended goalless.

The South Americans are shrewd old defenders, having conceded their first goal of the year against Portugal in the last 16. On paper, the contrast suggests this could be one of the games of the tournament.

Head-to-head, the draw has been the most common result over the years. Their previous four meetings have ended in draws, while Uruguay have won two and lost one. They have met thrice in a World Cup before with two draws and one victory for Uruguay back in 1966.

Brazil vs Belgium

Brazil, for all their flair, have not looked like they have hit full tilt at the tournament yet because of Coach Tite’s pragmatic approach.

Belgium, meanwhile, started out the tournament like a house on fire and have since simmered down a bit. In the last 16 against Japan,

Coach Roberto Martinez had to prove his worth against the Blue Samurais of Japan; when the Asian underdogs surged into a two-goal lead.

But that Belgium seared back to win 3-2 will go a long way to restoring full confidence. Brazil have been tested to this extent just once against Switzerland in the group stage, but they couldn’t engineer a way out and had to settle for a draw that ultimately changed nothing for either side en route to the quarters.

But the Samba Boys are five-time champions – and they should not be written off.

Head-to-head, Brazil have lost to Belgium just once in four meetings, in 1963. They’ve won all the others, including a 2-0 victory in the last 16 at the 2002 World Cup.

Sweden vs England

Sweden have not endeared themselves to football fans with their style of play, but they are in the quarter-finals for the first time since the USA ’94 World Cup where they won the bronze medal.

But if they can frustrate their quarter-final opponents as much as they’ve stifled all the others and keep their cool, they can fancy their chances against England looked.

England on the other hand having buried their penalty shootout jinx at the World Cup after years of disappointments have grown in confidence and look poised to pick the semi-finals ticket at the expense of the hard fighting Swedes.

Head-to-head, the two sides are well acquainted with each others style of play. England have won eight, drawn nine and lost seven.

Both their World Cup encounters (2002 and 2006) ended in scoring draws, but neither of those came in a knockout scenario.

Russia vs Croatia

The hosts are the most unlikely contenders for the quarter-finals, but it’s been that kind of World Cup.

Russia were written off before the tournament started, coming into it ranked below even Saudi Arabia.

Yet they’ve booted out 2010 champions Spain on penalties and hold the joint-largest margin of victory after their 5-0 trouncing of the Saudis in the opening match in Moscow.

Croatia are perennial dark horses, but had to battle for their spot through one of the worst penalty shootouts in recent memory against stubborn Denmark.

With a nation behind them at last, Russia have every reason to believe they are in with a chance.

Head-to-head, the sides have met three times, two of those games ended in a draw with Croatia winning the other. Their most recent meeting finished 3-1 to the Croats in a 2015 friendly.

Chris Ngwodo, a public affairs commentator described the upcoming showdown between France and Uruguay as a match that could swing either way.

Ngwodo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said that the quarter pairings would certainly live up to the bated expectations of fans.

He stressed that the likely absence of Edison Cavani due to a calf injury from the opening match on Friday would not dilute its complexion.

“Even with Cavani as an injury doubt, Uruguay will prove difficult to beat as usual in spite of France’s firepower.

“France should ultimately prevail, while Russia will seek to continue its fairytale run but will probably fall short against Croatia.

“Belgium fresh from their morale boosting win over Japan, have what it takes to halt the Brazilian juggernauts.

“Sweden are confident of overcoming England, but the Three Lions may have a trick or two up their sleeves,’’ Ngwodo said. (NAN)

Britain ‘Dumb’ If It Thinks Russia Would Stage Nerve Attack During World Cup – Diplomat

Britain is foolish if it believes Russia staged a new nerve agent attack in England in the middle of the soccer World Cup, Russia’s embassy to the Netherlands wrote on social media on Thursday.

The embassy was commenting after two Britons fell critically ill after what is thought to be a chance encounter with the poison after an attack on former Russian agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury in March.

The British authorities have not accused Russia of involvement in the new incident, saying their working assumption is that the Britons were poisoned by traces of nerve agent left over from the original attack.

“How dumb (do) they think (Russia) is to use ‘again’ so-called ‘Novichok’ in the middle of the FIFA World Cup…The show must go on?,” Russia’s embassy to the Netherlands wrote on Twitter on Thursday.

Russia denies any involvement in the original attack.

Separately, Sergei Zheleznyak, deputy speaker of the State Duma, Russia’s lower house of parliament, told state TV that the new poisoning incident in Britain looked like an attempt to spoil England soccer fans’ positive perception of Russia.

Russia is hosting the tournament, which ends on July 15, for the first time.

Zheleznyak said Britain needed to whip up an hysteria to distract attention from what its intelligence services were doing.

Health officials have urged local people who recently visited any of five sites cordoned off by police in Salisbury and Amesbury since on Tuesday to take precautions, including washing clothing and cleaning other items that could be contaminated.

Mike Wade, a regional health protection director for Public Health England, said late on Wednesday that there was “no significant health risk to the wider public’’ but officials planned to keep their advice under review as the police investigation continued. (Reuters/NAN)

Oil Prices Fall As Trump Urges OPEC To Cut Prices, Market Anticipates China-U.S. Trade Tariffs

Oil prices fell on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump sent a strident tweet demanding that OPEC cut prices for crude.

The escalating trade row between Washington and Beijing, which triggered another sell-off in Asian stocks on Thursday, was also felt in oil markets, with China warning it could introduce duties on U.S. crude imports at an as yet unspecified date.

Brent crude futures LCOc1 were at 77.70 dollars per barrel at 6.53 GMT, down 54 cents, or 0.7 percent, from their last close.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures CLc1 were down 37 cents, or 0.5 per cent, at 73.77 dollars per barrel.

Trump on Wednesday accused the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) of driving up fuel prices.

“The OPEC Monopoly must remember that gas prices are up & they are doing little to help,” Trump wrote on his personal Twitter account.

“If anything, they are driving prices higher as the United States defends many of their members for very little $’s.”

This must be a two way street,” he wrote, adding in block capitals, “REDUCE PRICING NOW!”

OPEC together with a group of non-OPEC producers led by Russia started to withhold output in 2017 to prop up prices.

Recent price rises have also been spurred by a U.S. announcement that it plans to re-introduce sanctions against Iran from November, targeting oil exports.

“A key driver of the rise in prices has been the OPEC-Russia deal to cut oil output, compounded by collapsing Venezuelan production and the U.S. decision to end the Iran deal,” National Australia Bank (NAB) said in its July outlook.

OPEC and Russia announced in June they were willing to raise output to address concerns of emerging supply shortages due to unplanned disruptions from Venezuela to Libya, and likely also to replace a potential fall in Iranian supplies due to U.S. sanctions.

In spite of  these measures to replace disrupted supplies, Goldman Sachs said in a July 4 note to clients that “the market will remain in deficit” in the second half of the year.

The U.S. bank warned that supply threats were “threatening a sharp further rise in prices and global economic growth”.

Meanwhile, China’s commerce ministry said on Thursday the United States is “opening fire on the entire world”, warning that Washington’s proposed tariffs on Chinese goods will hit international supply chains.

The comments came as Washington plans to impose tariffs on an estimated $34 billion worth of Chinese imports on Friday.

Asian stock markets on Thursday extended recent sharp losses.

China’s customs agency said on its website that Chinese tariffs on U.S. goods would immediately be implemented in retaliation.

“The decision by the U.S. administration is expected to be taken on Friday and China is expected to retaliate immediately,” said Hussein Sayed, Chief Market Strategist at futures brokerage FXTM.

However, the Chinese government has not yet specified a date on which it may introduce duties on imports of U.S. crude.

The latter have soared in the last two years to around 400,000 barrels per day in July, worth around $1 billion at current market prices.(Reuters/NAN)

Moreover, medics have provided assistance to 18 people over the past 24 hours.

The Defence Ministry noted that no settlements joined the ceasefire regime over the past 24 hours.

Nigeria 2019 : Why We Form The Reformed APC — Galadima

Nigeria map 2019

By Joseph Edegbo:

Former Secretary to the defunct Congress for Progressive Change Buhari’s former party, Buba Galadima on Wednesday announced the emergence of a faction from Nigeria’s ruling party APC. called ‘Reformed APC”  .

Galadima told journalists in Abuja, the nation’s capital that the split was because the party’s leadership had annihilated members and that those of the new group were from nPDP,  defunct CPC, ANPP and ACN

Galadima who addressed newsmen as the Chairman of the. “brand new political party” gives reasons for the formation.

”This merger was based on the strong belief that Nigeria had come of age that it was severely under-performing and incapable to meet the potentials of good governance.”

“The Nigerian people gave power to APC based on its promises and potentials. We are sad to inform that after more than three years of governance, our expectations (have been) completely dashed. The APC has run a ruthless and incompetent government that has failed to deliver good governance to the people. It has rather imposed dictatorship, impunity, abuse of power, complete application of constitutional and statutory responsibilities, impunity in the rule of law and constitutionality. It has failed to ensure the security and welfare of Nigerian and elevated nepotism to secondary height.”

Galadinma also spoke of the growing insecurity in Nigeria which he said the current APC leadership had failed to resolve.

Nigeria: “My Stay In Senate Not Illegal” -Sen. Aidoko, …Goes To Appeal Court

Sen. Atai Aidoko, Senator Representing Kogi East, NorthCentral Nigeria.
Sen. Atai Aidoko,
Senator Representing Kogi East, NorthCentral Nigeria.

The Senator representing Kogi East, NorthCentral Nigeria  Sen. Atai Aidoko, on Wednesday said he would not vacate his seat because the ruling of the Federal High Court nullifying  his election could not be enforced.

Aidoko made this known while addressing newsmen in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Sen. Isaac Alfa had taken Aidoko to an Abuja Federal High Court, challenging his election in 2015.

The court recently delivered a judgment in favour of Alfa and directed the Clerk of the Senate to swear in Alfa.

Aidoko and Alfa are both members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In the suit Alfa contended that he was the right candidate nominated by the party  to contest the seat in the 2015 election.

However, Aidoko  told newsmen that  he had already appealed against the judgment.

He said he would not go into the technicalities of the matter to avoid contempt of court as the case was before the Court of Appeal.

He added that the ruling was faulty because it was not in the capacity of the Clerk as ordered by the court to administers oath of office.

“It is a common knowledge in law that once a notice of appeal is entered,  every other thing will stay action.

“I have, therefore, appealed the judgment and motion for stay of execution entered at the Appeal Court. By this, no party ought to take any further action.

“If any institution should violate the law, not the parliament until the appeal is determined.

“Contrary to uninformed perspectives being bandied about, nobody in the Senate is doing the wrong thing.

“The Constitution does not allow the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to do otherwise,” he said.
