By Oladele Igbagboyemi:

Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta has organised a free medical screening for the people of Ajebo and Ajibayo in Abeokuta, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, South West Nigeria.

Speaking on the programme, the chairman of the committee, Dr. Adekunle Adediran said the programme was aimed at meeting the needs of the underprivileged by providing free healthcare services in communities.

“The relationship that exists between FMC, Abeokuta and this community makes us decided to come up with this programme. The medical director, Professor Abdulsemiu Musa-Olumu directed us that we should carry out medical outreach program in this community.

“The aim of this program is to bring health to the people of this community rather than waiting for them to come to the centre, we have decided to mobilize both human and material resources to care for them.

“We are here to examine them, do screening for some diseases of public health importance, general health check, general health talk and counseling. At the end of  everything, they will need to go and see a senior physician for further check up”.

It would be recalled that the government of Ogun state has donated the centre about 170 hectares of land in Ajibayo village, along Ajebo road in Abeokuta for the project.

The centre organized the programme as part of activities to mark its 25th anniversary, with the theme: ‘Sustaining Effective Health Care: Our Collective Responsibility’.

In his comment, a 66-year-old beneficiary retired civil servant, Mr Sumoni Ojo, said: “This is a welcome idea by the federal medical centre. I must commend their effort, I was able to consult the doctor, who listened to my complaints, educated me on my health and gave me drugs for free.”

Another beneficiary, Mrs Seminat Ajibola, 52, said she had been having difficulty seeing objects clearly for many months, but had not been able to go to the hospital due to financial constraint. “I thank God that after the screening, I was able to secure eye glasses at affordable price,” she said.

Also speaking at the program, Bello Akiola, a teacher in St. Peter African church primary school in Ajibayo, said: “it is a welcome programme despite that this programme should have come up before now in a village like this, nevertheless, its still okay. I want to advice the federal medical centre that they should continue this programme, they should put it in their scheme, so that it will be a continuous routine”.

While commending the organiser of the programme, a 39-year-old food vendor, Mrs Desire Aminat, said: “I am so glad that this programme came up and it will be good if it continue like this. I pray that God will continue to bless them.”

South Africa’s power company, Eskom says it has welcomed McKinsey’s apology to South Africa for its role in State capture.

“Eskom welcomes the apology made by McKinsey & Company Global Managing Partner, Kevin Sneader, to the people of South Africa at the University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) forum earlier today,” said the power utility on Monday.

In a speech on Monday, Sneader said he was “very sorry personally and on behalf of McKinsey & Company for the fact that we have had anything to do with any of the issues surrounding State Capture”.

Monday’s apology followed hot on the heels of the announcement that the management consulting firm will pay back the R1 billion paid to it by Eskom under the Turnaround Programme.

On Monday, the power utility confirmed that it had received payment of R902 million.

In his apology, Sneader said State capture has had a horrible effect on South Africa, its economy and its people.

The Eskom board and management welcomed this milestone of recovering funds from McKinsey and committed to continue to deal decisively with improper and irregular contracts.

“To this end, Trillian, which was not party to the settlement, will be pursued for the recovery of the remainder of the payments through the legal review process, together with the National Directorate of Public Prosecutions (NDPP),” Eskom said.

Eskom Group Chief Executive Phakamani Hadebe thanked the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU), NDPP and McKinsey for their cooperation, saying the payment will help the utility to address its challenges.

“This payment goes a long way towards our quest to address the issues of funds lost and regaining the trust of our people.

“We commit ourselves to root out financial mismanagement and malfeasance and we will continue to work with the six regulatory bodies and law enforcement agencies in addressing corruption, which are National Treasury, Special Investigative Unit (SIU), SAPS, Hawks, NDPP and the Zondo Commission,” said Hadebe.

In May, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo announced that the first round of hearings for the State capture inquiry will be held in August. – SAnews.gov.za

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Health, Yakasai said: “We are in Zamfara as part of our tour across the states for agitation against drug abuse issues in Nigeria.

Following the implementation of the AU Institutional Reforms approved at the recent 31st Ordinary session of the African Heads of States and Government, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development NEPAD is now to be known as African Union Development Agency

The Agency will serve as a technical body of the African Union with it’s own legal entity, defined by it’s own statue.

The statue will be developed and presented for adoption at the next AU Summit in January 2019.

The Assembly commended the leadership of Senegalese President, H.E Macky Sall, current Chairperson of the NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee, for reinforcing the credibility of NEPAD that has been acknowledged in the international community, including the G20 and the G7.

The current reforms at the AU are an affirmation by member states of their commitment to the NEPAD Agency as the Union’s own instrument established to champion catalytic support to countries and regional bodies in advancing the implementation of the continent’s development vision – as articulated in the seven aspirations and 20 goals of Agenda 2063.

Dr Ibrahim Mayaki, CEO of the NEPAD Agency, stated that, “A core aspect of the current reforms is to streamline and improve effectiveness and efficiency in delivery in the implementation of AU decisions, policies and programmes across all AU organs and institutions. In this sense, as the NEPAD Agency is the technical implementation agency of the AU, one specific recommendation in the Kagame report is to transform it into the AU Development Agency. We are enthusiastic about this transformation, which will make it possible to deploy our programmes even more effectively in the service of our continent’s development.”

UNICEF has given kudos to Kaduna State, Northwest of the country for recording appreciable improvement in health, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and nutrition among other sectors in the first half of 2018 as contained in its  mid-year reports.

The UNICEF Chief of Field Officer, Kaduna, Dr Zakari Adam, made the commendation at the opening of the Mid-Year Review Meeting held on Tuesday  in Kaduna.

According to him, the state government has demonstrated commitment to its child development agenda, focusing on health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) as well as basic education among other sectors.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in health, the achievements include treatment of 28,946 children affected with diarrhoea and 7,734 affected with pneumonia.

Also, 96.2 per cent of the about 400,000 children under one year in the state were vaccinated with the third dose of pentevalent vaccine ( Penta) against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, hepatitis B, and haemophilus influenza-type B

In nutrition, 4,843 severe malnourished children were admitted in various Community Management of Acute Malnutrition centres in the state, out of which 3,245 were cured.

A total of 258,412 people are living in Open Defecation Free communities from the 120,417 targeted for the period under Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).

Similarly 377,924 people acquired basic knowledge on hand washing, safe excreta disposal and water supply which was beyond  the 200,000 target for the period under review.

He explained that the meeting was meant to deliberate on various sectors such as nutrition, health, water sanitation and hygiene, HIV/AIDS and education among  others  with a view to sharing success stories, challenges and lessons learned in the first half of the year.

“The goal was to review what our achievements are, our challenges, lessons learnt and how to improve in the remaining six months.

“And I am glad to say that Kaduna state government and other partners have been very committed in achieving results in the various sectors to ensure children’s protection, survival and development, “he said.

He, however, identified resource mobilisation as  a major challenge in achieving the targets set for 2018.

“Although UNICEF is working to mobilise more funds from donor countries and other sources, domestic resources are highly needed to help us achieve results, “Adam said.

Also, Muhammad Abdullahi, the  Commissioner in charge of  the state Planning and Budget Commission (PBC), said that UNICEF interventions in the last six months had improved the status of women and children  in  health, nutrition and hygiene in the state.

Abdullahi, who was represented by the commission’s Director, Development Aid Coordination, Mrs Phoebe Yayi, restated  the state government commitment towards ensuring steady development of  every child in the state.

“This meeting would enable us agree on priority activities for the remaining six months of 2018, map out convergence for State Engagement Plan implementation and strengthen the role of government,”Abdullahi said.

NAN reports that the meeting received reports of achievements and challenges from stakeholders while plans were mapped out for the remaining six months.

Leaders from different sectors of society have vowed to play a significant role to curb the scourge of violence against women and child abuse.

Ministers and Deputy Ministers — supported by representatives from various faith-based organisations and societal formations — took turns on stage to denounce the rampant abuse of women and children, as the #100MenMarch concluded at the Union Buildings this afternoon.

They all made a call for men to respect and protect the vulnerable in society and for women to stand up for their rights.

Police Minister Bheki Cele, who was joined by National Police Commissioner General John Sitole and hundreds of cadets from the police academy, urged police not to turn away women who seek assistance at stations.

“The [spirit of the march] should be every day. It should not just be today and you go home and do exactly what you are not supposed to do.

“Men, we have invited you here today, especially the young men training as police… When a woman says ‘no’; it must be ‘no’.

“When these women come battered, bruised [and] bloodied at the police station, don’t turn them back home to negotiate because next time she won’t come home. By the time she doesn’t come back to the police station, she’ll be dead. Let’s make sure we don’t send them back because sending her back is sending her to her death.”

Cele urged women to leave abuse men, saying: “Any man that points a finger at you, turnaround and walk away. Don’t ever stay with a man that puts his fingers in your face [because] next time he’ll put a knife in your heart. That’s not a man. That’s an animal.”

Social activist Yusuf Abramjee said the campaign against the abuse of women and children should be throughout the year and not just a once-off event. However, he saluted government for the initiative.

“Today we want to tell the perpetrators: the law is coming for you. We are appealing to our law enforcement agencies to arrest, convict and punish them,” he said.

Mbuyiselo Botha from the Commission for Gender Equality said government could not tackle the scourge on its own. To triumph over gender-based violence, he said, government and society at large need to focus on the boy child.

“It can’t be business as usual. No means no,” he said.

Faith-based organisations, various NGOs and various role-players joined in the march today to call for an end to the scourge. – SAnews.gov.za

President Ramaphosa Of South Africa Visits Nigeria

President Cyril Ramaphosa is undertaking a working visit to Nigeria where stability and continental integration will form part of talks with his counterpart President Muhammadu Buhari.

“While in Nigeria, it is expected that the two Presidents will discuss a wide range of bilateral, continental and global issues of common concern. Peace, stability and continental integration will feature prominently in their discussions,” said South African Presidency on Tuesday.

The President’s two-day visit will see him meet President Buhari and also participate in the 2018 Annual Meeting and 25th Anniversary Celebrations of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank).

As the continent’s two largest economies, South Africa and Nigeria enjoy good political, economic and social relations formally established in 1994, immediately after South Africa’s first democratic elections.

Formal relations between South Africa and Nigeria have been conducted through the Bi-National Commission (BNC), established in 1999 as a structured bilateral mechanism to promote political, economic, social, cultural, scientific and technical cooperation between the two countries.

The BNC has over the years deepened and solidified the relations between the two countries, and laid the foundation for increased bilateral political and economic cooperation.

Bilateral cooperation has been enhanced over the years with 34 bilateral agreements having been signed between South Africa and the West African state.

The agreements cover various areas such as arts and culture, education, agriculture, trade and investment, mining, defence, policing, immigration, taxation, science and technology, health, tourism, environment and energy, amongst others.

South Africa and Nigeria also enjoy strong economic cooperation demonstrated by the increasing trade and investment flows between the two sister Republics.

In 2016, South Africa exported goods worth R6.4 billion while Nigerian exports to South Africa totalled R30.4 billion.

In 2017, South African exports were valued at R5.7 billion against R22.8 billion imports from Nigeria.

“Nigeria enjoys a huge trade deficit due to the increasing South African importation of petroleum products,” said the Presidency.

Meanwhile, there are over 120 South African companies currently doing business in Nigeria in various sectors, mainly in telecommunications, banking, retail, hospitality, mining, tourism, agriculture and construction and tourism.

Some of the South African companies that have invested in Nigeria include MTN, Multichoice, Stanbic Bank, Shoprite Checkers, South African Airways, Sasol and Bon Hotels, to mention a few.

President Ramaphosa will be accompanied by Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Energy Minister Jeff Radebe, Police Minister Bheki Cele and Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Bulelani Magwanishe. – SAnews.gov.za

UN Special Rapporteur Urges North Korea to Open Dialogue on Human Rights Situation

UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in North Korea Tomas Ojea Quintana on Tuesday called on Pyongyang to open a parallel dialogue on the country’s human rights situation with the ongoing peace and demilitarisation talks.

The expert also expressed concerns that human rights terminology had not appeared in any documents issued following talks between the two Koreas, and the North Korea-U.S. Summit.

“While still in its infancy, the world is now witnessing a peace process that may bring real results.

“To date, the Government of North Korea has refused to engage with me.

“However, I am now calling for them to start a process of dialogue on human rights situation in the country.

“To begin a conversation with me as a concrete sign of their commitment, which will only serve to reinforce the ongoing process,’’ Ojea Quintana said, published by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The special rapporteur stressed that though human rights were often considered an inconvenience during delicate negotiations, experience has shown that “there can be no genuine, peaceful and sustainable transition without it.’’

The statement provided figures on the humanitarian situation in North Korea, saying that over 10 million people (40 per cent of the North Korean population) required humanitarian aid, while early childhood malnutrition and nutrition insecurity were widespread in the country.

He visited the South Korean capital of Seoul on July 2 to 10 to advance a human rights dialogue with Pyongyang.

He has repeatedly submitted requests to visit North Korea, but to no avail.

The long-standing tensions on the Korean Peninsula started to ease after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed his commitment to denuclearise the country, and held historic summits with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in April and U.S. leader Donald Trump in June. (Sputnik/NAN)
